  1. I am not sure where to post this so here will do I guess. Yesterday I compared the Oh-6 ( from the Unsung Mod ) to the Pawnee/Humming bird. I placed them side by side and inspected them. To me they look almost the same size. My pilot figure stands the same height against both vehicles. They look the same size... BUT. When I got into the Pawnee/Hummingbird all that changes. In the Pawnee/Humming Bird the pilots eye level is WAY TOO HIGH, if you look left while bank turning hard you will be staring at the door frame. ( this is really really bad... ) In the Oh-6 the pilots eye level is lower than the door frame and consequently when looking left you can see UNDER the door frame. GOOD. You can see this problem in third person and in first. From inside the vehicle and outside. So how did this pass quality control ? In the Pawnee/Humming bird the pilot is either too BIG or the vehicle is TOO SMALL. Either way it looks and feels WRONG. In the OH-6 ( Unsung ), it feels GOOD. The pilot size and vehicle size are complimentary. ( This problem with the Pawnee/Humming bird has always made me vaguely concerned but I never had anything to compare it too in game. and I just thought I was being picky... so I just sucked it up. ) Then I then went back to ArmA 2 OA and got in the AH-6 and yes, it's OK. I can look left out the door while banking no problem. Feels good. ArmA 2 -Mod=@Still_Rocking. Also the pilots FOV : In the OH-6 the FOV is good. From standing next to the heli to sitting in it I feel that it is "real", sane, normal. In the Humming BIrd the pilots FOV is zoomed in slightly. ( ???? WTF... ) Being particular about FOV while flying I tend to take note of changes. Obviously the standing character model and the sitting in the heli character model are two separate models and have two separate FoV's. Why they would be different... ? This to me is a basic modelling consistency issue and should have been sorted out back in the very beginning. ( another example is looking down the sights of a weapon, and the FoV changes... *eye roll * ...) I shake my head. This is so dumb. Yes, a strong word, but having created the THIRD iteration of the SAME GAME. You would think that certain things would be nailed down. and no, I do not think this is trivial thing. I think it is quite stupid and should have been fixed long ago. ( let me guess it's been talked to death and I missed the party. ) It makes me sad to see such a basic problem. It's a massive step backwards in quality. The upside is the OH-6 works fine . :- ) Yey ! George.

  3. Yeah so I just thought I would see if I can post this here. ( the game does actually have a HARD CORE mode... so don't think it's some easy "eat all the crayons" type sim....) If you like flying, and like the MH-6 and you like actual in real life helicopter gunship pilots. Step this way. Go ahead and look this up " MH-Zombie " It's on steam but I am not gonna link to it directly, you have to do that for yourself. I know... such a tiresome thing to do... I have not tried it yet. That is coming soon... I hope. I'm all for flying games that have a hardcore mode... But wait: here are some pics from the DEVELOPER, real stuff ! wooo!!!! : These are NOT in game pics they are REAL pics of REAL stuff ! !! and.... hey look an MH-6 !!! ( Oh yes this is real and nom nom nom, a crayon !!!! yemmy...) Well I will report back in due course after I have tried it out. Being a Little Bird enthusiast... I have to give this a whirl. George.
  4. Hi. So. lets just, for one small time, imagine that I have some cool thing I have added to the Ah-6 ( I don't yet...) . What exactly is needed to make an addon ? What steps are needed etc. ( not the making things from scratch but using existing files...) I have looked in the .pbos of other addon helicopters ... do I just copy that? Is that all ? No I haven't looked on youtube etc etc and prefer a more direct to the point solution. If it is simply putting things into a folder and then making that into a .pbo and then making the @ mod folder structure. That seems simple enough. Or did I do it wrong ? At this juncture I only wish to make an addon that works. Not the stuff inside it. At some point I would like to modify a model etc etc but right now getting the basics organised seems more rational. A guide that explains the basics ( for this operation ) would be great but I am tired of reading overly verbose manuals that start by listing controls... Thanks ! George.

    How do I : make an AH-6 addon ...

Can I make an AH-6 Addon ( with a cool name ) from all the parts in Arma ? No making files just reuse the ones already available. That seems like common sense to me. If at some stage I wanted to modify the actual model, all I have to do is swap the old model out and the new one in. ( which means making a new .pbo but that is easy...) Do you think ? There is something weird about addon dependencies. Like is it possible to make an addon that requires files from elsewhere to make it work. If it is not "self contained". I guess that is where all those errors are ? Maybe? The system seems very ... um... untidy. Or at least has the high possibility of untidiness. Addons nested in addons that require other addons... it's quite mad really. :- )

    How do I : make an AH-6 addon ...

Yeah, I'm simply looking at the "addon" part of the mod. Like what you have to do to make the mod. Put these files in here, wrap in .pbo... make a folder called @ whatever and then create line in short cut -mod=@ whatever ... I'm not talking about making the files in the mod. For instance the LEAST stuff you need to make an "addon" mod. I see mods with huge amounts of files and then some are quite tiny. The AH-6 .p3d etc files I looked at. so could I take those and the relevant other files, and put them into a new mod folder called @GerogesMod ? Imagine a kitset mod where all the correct files are ready and I put them all together to make the mod. I need this, and this and this and do this etc etc. So no "making files" just putting together other files. Every modder must have done this at some stage to test the process. :- )
  7. Ugh. It's the stupid model makers. They probably never did basic Technical Drawing, and probably "traced" diagrams to make models etc etc If all these models etc were made using a decent CAD program in mm... with consistency across the world. Hecking darn. Which is one of the reasons why I am not keen on learning Oxygen. or whatever the "model" makers use. This is so daft. I guess the human model department and the vehicle department will not agree on a standard unit.... The more I look at People sitting in the Humming bird the more they look laughable too big... * eye roll * I am glad the Unsung Oh-6 and occupants looks acceptable. There is that small mercy. Thanks for the input. :- )
  8. Update: More pics of the hardware etc. Mods: Lowered the base and restrained the rudder controls. Next up is a "collective" that is compatible with ArmA.... ( using an analog control with no zero center is a major pain the rotor... ) https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4621327-DIY-Flight-Stick-for-SImulation-Virtual-RC-flying-etc-(-More-pics-!-) It looks rough but the actual important parts are large, industrial, hefty and smooth as. MMjoy Atmege MCU Allegro Hall effect sensors... full sized rudder bar, 22mm sealed bearings... The collective design is taking it's sweet time... It's amazing to fly with, really really makes the AH-6 shine in Arma2, it's crazy good. It's so awesome. With head tracking you just get mesmerised by it. Flying hard around buildings etc is amazing. Working out some skill in Chernogorsk. :- ) Oh look ! Pictures !!!!
  9. Ok, so this is the beginning of my ArmA 2 OA series of flying videos. Mostly in Chernogorsk. Yes it is short. I knowed that. Will get longer etc. The idea is to create a decent cinematic of flying around Chernogorsk. ( with my pal if he actually shoes up.... come on! ) All flying is done with my DIY flight controls and head tracking and I will do a video covering that in the future. The limbo is not very hard but it is a good test. Can you do it over and over ? Touching the skids is a tricky thing, I'm not really sure if I am am but yes things can go bad if you are too low. And bad if too high. The video is low res, I'm new and my PC is old. It's a feature! Why do this? I love Chernarus and I love the AH-6, I also love aerobatics. :- ) George. Gymkhana n noun 1 an event comprising competitions on horseback, typically for children. 2 Indian a public place with facilities for athletics. ORIGIN C19: from Urdu gendkanah 'racket court', from Hindi gemd 'ball' + Persian kanah 'house', altered by association with gymnastics.

    Chernarus. Mad Mikes map. Thoughts?

Hi there. No I have not tried it. I did see a bunch of Chernarus maps.... in the steam workshop thing... sigh. The trees ... I was hoping the trees etc would be better. Enterable buildings are not really a big deal as I am flying ... I don't hold out much hope. It is quite vexing. Some trees are fine, others... well they are not so fine. and the ground clutter. ArmA 2 OA does have the "wave of grass" growing as I speed a long but in Chern 2035 there is a definite hard edge and it ;looks bad. Well thanks for replying. I will try it out. :- )
  12. I recently tried out Mad Mikes Chenarus 2035. Yes it is the map. It is post apoc. Or something... The trees... look bad. I have tried everything to make them look ok but ... no. Also the grass grows as I speed along in the heli. It looks daft. I do lot of flying around, I like the trees etc to not change as I get nearer to them etc. This burns me that it's still a thing. I am picking it's a LoD thing... I go back to A2 and the map is overall very good. It has LoD issues... but hey it's old. ( every fracking thing should have the same LoD levels... darn it ! ) The map, well it's probably fine if you are ground based. and you like negotiating wrecks... but for flying... it's not stellar. If only I knew how to make these maps... ( yes I know RTFM...) ... The upside of the map is I get to fly with AFM in an OH-6 ( Unsung Mod ) . The down side is the grass is pacing me and the trees morph as I get near them, not to mention I can see the different images in the trees... the XYZ thing. sigh. It is OK for boots. Is there a better version ? I noted there were a plethora of them.... hijacked mods ? Cheers. George.
  13. ha I didn't think this was going to get any traction but... I went back to check my findings... and there is some weird stuff going on with the models. ( none of this would be a big deal if my view out of the the Humming Bird was not clipped by the door frame. ...) So yeah, just what is going on here? The Ah-9 looks too small for the characters models. and the Oh-6 looks like the characters has sunk into the seats... And this is where I get crabby about "modeling". in a "world" there should be uniform height. 1000mm is the same regardless of where you are in the world. On the ground or in a vehicle. Having two separate modelling worlds with different UNIT measurements is daft. ( Third person, first person, inside a vehicle etc... ) So either the Pilot model is too BIG or the Heli model is too SMALL, either way there is something wrong. It's just nuts. Have fun ! :- )
  14. Hi there I downloaded a Taviana Map but it say "do not use for A2 OA "... This one: http://ftp.armedassault.info.jerryhopper.com/armaholic/arma2/arma2_files_addons_islands/Taviana_Island_v1.0.rar So I did use it and it crashed Arma 2 OA. Right downto the desk top... wow. Any help ? Cheers ! George.
  15. Oh you are just talking about ArmA 2. The "standalone" bit was strange. I never paid any attention to the silly names they give "sets" of titles ( combined arms, combined operations etc..) I'm totally 100% legal. Do own both A2 and A2 OA ... gave BI my hard earned cash. I thought it was a very good from the start. Blew my tiny mind... Right then, fiddle around and things might work. neat. Cheers. George.
  16. I did read the first page of the linked thread. So you can't run this map on A2 OA, but you can. ? We played Dayz Taviana on A2 OA... regardless of how we did it this was a thing. We can still do this? What the heck is ArmA 2 Standalone ? Fun ! :- )
  17. Hiya. TLDR: OH-6 for A3? ( Just the bird by itself... ? ) Long read: So I am stuck in ArmA 2 OA trying to get rid of the Damn joystick DEADZONE ( yes it is there, trust me ...) and I have decided to throw in the khaki towel and migrate to ArmA 3 ( Chernarus map and AFM...) . I am pretty picky about my Heli's that I like flying and I am not really that cool with the "Humming Bird".... the door frame on my left is.. uh... annoying. Unlike the AH-6 in A2 OA... It's too shiny... looks too modern... a but yeah nah really. Is there a really good OH-6 addon ? ( I am not wild about the steam workshop thing. I would rather go back to ARMAHOLICS and DL stuff from there and manually add it to the core sim. Being old and crabby etc... ) ( -mod=@Oh-6_Killer_Egg ) Um, yeah. Just the Heli by itself would be cool, as I tend to just fly around Chernogorsk doing stunts etc. Occasionally trying to hose down a Tunguska with .30 for kicks. It never turns out well for me but heck and darn do you learn to MOVE your heli.... Still a bit sour about ArmA 2 and the fracking DEAD ZONE ... ( we can talk about this is you like... or not... ) George. PS I'm going to try out Chernarus 2035 for the first time... I think there are some changes from the vanilla A2 map if I am not mistaken... I do love that map.
  18. ahem. I seemed to get JoytoKey to work properly . So you can map to mouse getting rid of the dead zone and you can adjust how sensitive your pitch and roll controls are. Worth a crack mate. :- ) George.
  19. Heli FM question. ( I could bury this question in the "proper" sub but ... I'm just going to start right here. till it gets moved..) Is there a Mod that removes the @#$%@#$@#%! Dead Zone the heli Flight Model in Arma 2 OA ? >>>> Solution: Set up a secondary program that converts JOY STICK outputs to MOUSE. Then set up PITCH and ROLL to use the MOUSE outputs. I have done this with JoyToKey BUT... it has a bug / feature that nerfs the controls for some reason. Flying around Chernogosk all of a sudden in certain parts of the town the controls just disappear, sometimes they come back. It is very strange. The Dead Zone is GONE ! and aiming is much much better. To test the Dead Zone do this: Hover facing a wall. Then do very small ( I mean small ) pitch up and down, at some point you will get out of the Dead Zone and the heli will move. ( This is without JoytoKey !!! ) . The Dead Zone is small but very noticeable when you are zoomed in trying to snipe a BMP with the AH-6 from a few hundred meters. Also landing is a pain in the tail rotor if you are trying for precision. ( A long stick extension helps this a ton! ) JoyToKey has shown me the light BUT it's got a bug... so no dice. Also JoyToKey has Dead Zone built in so you have to TURN IT OFF ! >>>>>> End of solution. ( and the lack of actual visual feed back from the response to the applied curve on the sticks. ) My back ground is dabbling in Fight Sims, RC plane heli flying and tiny bit of IRL fixed wing flight. Arma2, RoF, DCS, RCDP. PicaSim etc. I fly the LB,first person, in Chernogorsk a lot, with my RC controller, and ... head tracking. ( woo! ) ( shameless plug here: https://github.com/opentrack/opentrack/releases/tag/opentrack-2023.3.0 ) The micro adjusting while trying to do roof top landings etc is painful with the DZ. ( compared with Arma 3 : I can land in my sleep in A3 ( standard FM mode ...) Why not move to Arma3? 'cos I love Arma 2 and I love Cherno... Please feel free to move this post to the right sub forum. "To fly is to life." Cheers. :- )
  20. It's WORKING ! I uninstalled JoytoKey , restarted pc, installed old Joytokey ( had bad deadzone built in... duh... ) uninstalled, then reinstalled the latest version ( the first one I installed...) and it now works. The controls do not freeze up when flying over that Church in Chernogorsk... No idea what that was all about but it seems to work now. Long range sniping with the AH-6 is a GO ! Just spent the evening hosing down the enemy tanks with the miniguns till they "cook off". Still no turrets tossed.... is that a mod yet ? Big explosions with the hydras. Boom ! and don't come back... So... bottom line: JoytoKey maps the joy stick to the mouse ( assign mouse to heli controls ) which then bypasses the deadzone built into the game. I'm using Joytokey version 7 on a windows 7 machine. AND the mouse controls in ArmA 2 control the joy to mouse effect so you can have FAST or SlOW response by fiddling the mouse controls. Even smoothing ! ha ha ha ha... happy landings ! Fun ! So far so good. Fingers crossed. Cool. No idea why it works now... magic? George. PS Oh my I'm a sergeant now... will I get commissioned ... ?
  21. Hmm... that can't be right as I was playing DayZ on ArmA 2 OA back in the day.... in Taviana. so yeah... dunno what is up there. George.
  22. hmmm.... will have a look. If I can get the old AH-6 flying in Cherno in A3... then heck. Thanks!
  23. I could try that. The problem is very very very weird. It only happens when in the game engine, when out in the UI the problem is gone. What on earth could do that ? Overlapping memory spaces ? It could be the church in Cherno... when I fly near it the controls freeze ( with Joytokey ). Churches are cool I suppose. Not my kind of thing though... And all the other programs just fail to make arma do the joystick to mouse thing... Even though it works in the UI.... Bummer man. This was supposed to be the way forwards. Will try it again in a few days... I'm a bit over it right now. George.
  24. I really am not cool about steam. I still use Win 7. Yes I know. Don't care. So. Is there anyway to run ArmA 3 on win7 without steam OR win10 without steam. I never liked steam, ever. I am annoyed I have to use this third party BS. :- ) George.
  25. George_Smiley

ArmA 3 - Is there anyway to NOT use steam ?

Darn. I am so mad. Cheers.
