I'm looking back & laughing, to when myself & many others were upset about the franchise going to be a "steam only game". And how we kept telling people here on the forums it was a bad sign of things to come. Not necessarily that steam itself was bad, but that it was the first sign of the game going to be dumbed down for the mainstream. Generic content, BF/COD "movement", achievements etc etc. That said, it's not dumbed down that bad. It's still a very nice sandbox game, with 95% of the old still intact.

Ahh. Well every thread I see is about "I get 17fps (it's always 17 for some reason) on my 6000$ alienware. How come I can't run the game on ultra with 10k vd? My computer should be able to handle the 1200, non cached, Ai running amuck on this poorly optimized map & this bad server". Not utilizing all of the hardware is nothing new in this franchise..

Dang. It worked for me, thought I'd share. I noticed a large boost in overall FPS.

Will the grass render distance ever be customizable?
David77 replied to Gabardine's topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
It depends. TerrainGrid 3.125 (full grass - maximum draw distance) will be far more taxing than terraingrid 48 (minimum draw distance) or 50 (off) for example. Full grass is actually pretty demanding. -

How many things are going to break with tomorrows release?
David77 replied to sturmfalkerda's topic in ARMA 3 - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
We'll all know soon what's broke or not. -
You're still playing the beta. I think there will be plenty of things to relate to once the game goes live.
-
No the problem is all of the complaint threads, mostly complaining about the same thing. Most with no actual feedback, but ranting, complaining, & other Tom Foolery.

Some things you guys could try is unparking your cores, setting the game to "high" priority with the -high startup parameter & using -nosplash, -maxmem & -cpucount startup parameters. One more thing, it's a given, but.. make sure your pc is in top shape. startup parameters example: -noSplash -cpuCount=8 -high -maxMem=6144 Below is a startup parameter guide to help you with these things. 1. Go to Steam Library 2. Go to "Arma 3" Right Click then select "Properties" 3. Select "Set Launch Options" For AMD CPU users: AMD Dual Core with 4GB System Ram: "-noSplash -cpuCount=2 -high" AMD Quad Core with 4GB Ram: "-noSplash -cpuCount=4 -high" AMD Six Core with 4GB Ram: "-noSplash -cpuCount=6 -high" AMD Eight Core with 4GB Ram: "-noSplash -cpuCount=8 -high" ______________________________________________ If your running more than 8GB Ram then apply this to the end of the launch line: "-maxMem=8192" This will allow your game to utilize 8GB system Ram instead of 4GB. ______________________________________________ Intel CPU: For Hyperthreaded CPU's such as a Quad Core you will apply this: -cpuCount=8 This will enable your Hyperthreads on your CPU so your CPU will act as an eight core when running Arma 3. If you are running a Hyperthreaded Six Core then: -cpuCount=12 If you are running a Hyperthreaded Eight Core or Eight Core Xeon then apply this: -cpuCount=16 If you are running just a non Hyperthreaded CPU such as a Quad Core then select "4" instead of "8" same for a Dual Core you will select "2" instead of "4". All AMD CPU's are NOT Hyperthreaded so Hyperthreaded options is highly not recommended as this can cause system failure or damage. I will not be responible for system failure and damage if you choose to select more cores then you have on your command line! -high: makes your operating system prioritize services and processes to run your game better but this can cause system failure and instability if you dont have a good running system. If you Overclock this can cause system instability. -noSplash: disables startup videos and advertisements. -cpuCount=#: enables extra CPU cores and Hyperthreads. -maxMem=#: when set to "6144" (6GB) and up lets your game use more system Ram then 4GB. Do not set to higher than 4GB if you dont have at least 8GB. You can set to "8192" (8GB) if you have 12GB+ Ram.

Not saying the game is super optimized, but, alot of people join unoptimized missions. That combined with a packed server & having to run their settings on ultra + 10k VD. Then they come here & essentially complain to BIS about someone elses bad code or because there were 900 Ai on the map, none ofe'm cached... things like that. The series has always been demanding. And people will always stuff the envelope & then complain about it. Also, comparing BF3 on ultra to Arma is comparing apples to oranges... in a major way. You don't need a new rig. No he's just saying the majority of the original community prefer realism & that alot of the new comers are coming here and voting to dumb the game down via balancing the game (unknowingly). That's why most played this franchise to begin with, was the sense of realism. Large scale, realistic war. Not that the game is realistic in every aspect, but there's not exactly alot of large scale military sandboxes around either.
-
Alot will. Alot of mission designers / scripters like to make things as realistic as possible. Removing FAKs will just be another routine for the init.sqf... Lol.

Smoothly. As in no lag. You're right, the editor on a clean map is very smooth. It's also up to the persons hosting the servers and making maps to make sure things are optimized. I can play with 50+ people in MP just fine if the missions scripts, the mission itself, is optimized & the server is good. Too many people go to packed servers (good & bad servers) and play unoptimized missions & then come here and complain at BIS. Just because they can't run their game on Ultra + 10k VD, on a shit server that's packed to the brim, playing a cluster fuck of a mission. Yeah there's going to be lag. I'm not saying the game's optimized to what it should be, I'm just saying some people are placing the blame in the wrong place. The game has always been taxing yes. The game has always been a huge sandbox aswell.
-
I love when people complain about the bad performance & make threads about it everyday. I wish every person that runs the game smoothly would make a thread about it, so we could all see just how "bad" the game performs for the overall player base. Is the game demanding? yes. Is the game optimized to the maximum potential? No. Does it run smoothly on many peoples machines? Yes. Does it run poorly for others? Yes. Has this always been the case with this franchise? yes. Pound for pound, does Arma3 run more smoothly than any previous Beta/release? Imo... Yes. The game technically is in beta. Regardless how you see it, early release form then... w/e. With every patch the game will get more optimized. It's pointless to complain about a beta's optimization.

I'm making a SP mission soon & I've limited time atm to do the needed research. In any case, what's the best way to return all of the opfor units on the map, infantry & manned vehicles? I basically need all of the opfor units on the map to move to the players position once a condition is met. Thanks. Regards, David
-
Thank you, this works nicely. One more thing; These opfor units have set waypoints initially. However they keep their "limited" patrol speed (from the set waypoints) when they start to move to the players position. How can I set the units speed to normal when they start to move to the players position? I've noticed setwaypointspeed, but the units are moving to the player now & not any specific waypoint. I've managed to take them off of safe mode (from the initial Wps)and put them into "aware" & also set their ROE to engage at will. I just need them to move a little faster =). Here's what I've so far: onMapSingleClick "player setpos _pos"; Alerted=False; Detected=false; While {!Alerted} Do { If (Detected) Then { Alerted=True; { if (side _x == opfor) then { _x setBehaviour "AWARE"; _x setCombatMode "RED"; }; } forEach allUnits; While {True} Do { { if (side _x == opfor) then { _x doMove (GetPosATL player); }; } forEach allUnits; Sleep 10; Hint "Phase #2"; }; }; Hint "Phase #1"; Sleep 2; };

Give modders the tools to identify and avoid/solve performance bottlenecks
David77 replied to .kju's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
If you're going to make good MP missions, then you really do have to know your stuff. "Good" as in, JIP / MP compatible. -
I used to frequently play with well over 100 players in TvT campaigns. That was in Arma1 and Arma2 had a few servers go well over 100 participants. It all depends on who's making the scenarios. They can make it for 10 people only or 150 if they wish. It's just up to the server to handle that many =)
-
People always complain about this franchise being so demanding and unoptimized. It's just to bad no other full scale war sand box game exists...

Why to people play so much Life and Wasteland?
David77 replied to copper2010's topic in ARMA 3 - MULTIPLAYER
Though there are also Arma vets who enjoy those game modes, for the most part, new & ignorant players play DayZ, Wasteland & Life. I don't mean that in a bad way, but rather in a literal way. Some people simply just don't realize the magnitude of the game as a whole. All's they know is they're going to play this DayZ/Wasteland/rpglife "game". It's okay though, because if that crowd weren't playing DayZ/Wasteland or rpg life, they'd be playing COD or BF. So now atleast they're here and will eventually get to experience the "Milsim" side of the game. Though technically it's not a milsim, you get what I mean. ---------- Post added at 09:53 ---------- Previous post was at 09:49 ---------- I fixed your exaggeration to be more inline with how things really are. -
I couldn't agree more.

Will A3 full release need new install or benefit from new install
David77 replied to ricogs400's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
The game should update without any need to uninstall. It will just replace &/or add the needed files. To update the game to the beta you'll need to go into your steam library, right click on A3, click on properties, select the beta tab, then select the development build. That will update your game to the most current beta build. Once it updates you can play & check out the beta content. -
Here's a reality check; There will be a huge patch on the 12th, but please do not further such blind nonsense mbbird.
-
Oh do you have the release version? The one I have is in Beta & will receive a large update in two days.

Arma 3 is in beta.
