While I have no problem with the car wrecks as such, maybe there shouldn't be that many on actual parking lots? Yes, there's war and all that fun stuff, but I'd still guess that the municipality would get rid of them... Maybe add some wrecked agricultural machine near the fields? Anyway, I like the little details that have been put into Altis. Like the bullet holes on the solar panels (at least at the main airfield). As for people complaining about the topography and vegetation... You do realise that this is an actual island based on actual topographic satellite data? Yes, BIS has taken liberties with it like they've stated. But... you expect lush, continental forests just because Arma2 had them? On a Mediterranean island where pretty much all land that can be used for agriculture has been tilled? Some of you say that there's lack of environmental variation, while there's actually everything from rocky hills to green fields, salt lakes and even a bloody desert?

@antoineflemming: I wonder why I had missed that completely... I always though that China tried to lessen its reliability on others. @MistyRonin: That's exactly what I meant. Why do all the European countries seem so passive in this scenario, barring (maybe) small UK presence?

You're unlikely to find urban apartment buildings on a sub-urban island community. Comparing this aspect to past games is unnecessary.

Iran and China have somewhat close ties currently because of the latter's oil dependency. Also, Russia uses Iran to vent its own anti-American/anti-west sentiments. Iran and these countries having a fictional alliance doesn't bother me since it's quite credible. However, China and Russia being allies I find harder to believe (if that is so), considering that they are rivals in terms of economic and military power. It has been stated previously that by the 2030s many smaller European/Eurasian countries have been looking to Russia for support. I don't really want to start an argument about this, but having NATO as the protagonist faction is more silly than the CSAT. It has been stated that NATO has been growing weaker and unstable, as have many European countries... And exactly what are the main NATO countries again? Does USA alone have the resources to operate a battlegroup in the Mediterranean, considering its (proxy-)wars in the Pacific? What of the EU? Was it struck a death blow when Altis receded from it?

Overhauling Air Power in the Arma 3
Thanath replied to CaptainAzimuth's topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
It has been stated that at least initially, the game will focus on slower, subsonic ground attack aircraft. While I know for sure that other kinds of jets will be implemented to the game one way or another, I feel that with the scale of the world and the current targeting system supersonic aircraft (air superiority, interceptor etc.) seem impractical. The speed would be just too much to handle, the effective altitude would be ridiculously low and you could zoom over Altis in a few dozen seconds... I don't know if a new flare system for jets was introduced in the launch sneak preview. -
I find it somewhat unlikely that they would make a long leap backwards in time, considering that so far their fictional world has only moved forwards. I wonder whether they would return to an era that they've dealth with already (you can only rewrite stuff so many times...). Also, you just have to love this unargumented future-whining.

Arma 3 full analysis - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Thanath replied to Polygon's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
What I meant was that I think that the current sprinting animation makes more sense than the Arma2 one where infantry seem to hold their weapons almost horizontally in front of them while galloping, swinging them from side to side. -

Maybe it wouldn't make much sense in long distances or extremely difficult terrain, but wouldn't the transition to a combat stance be much more fluent if one keeps the upper body more still and forward oriented, even when moving? -
Arma 3 full analysis - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Thanath replied to Polygon's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
I can understand why some people would think that the skip in the level of technology or armament series is too much considering that it's been only 20 years. No doubt in our reality M16/M4 and AK/AN-series rifles and such will still be widely used in the 2030s. But I don't think that it's too far fetched to think that the US military would adopt a multipurpose design for its main assault rifle. Also, I hear that the production of the Kalashnikov-series rifles has ceased. As for the movement, hopping and swinging your gun from side to side when running might look natural (and even cool from an action movie point of view...) but wouldn't it be a little... amateurish? The Arma2 sprint animation looks simply comical to me. As for the designations, this might be the result of the ongoing hyper-correctness in naming things. They do sound a little awkward, but then again, most military stuff does... -
Arma 3 full analysis - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Thanath replied to Polygon's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Don't SAWs in practice fill the role of LMGs? Granted, Zafir uses larger caliber ammo, but still... In the end, doesn't all this go down to the ambiguous weapons classifying system? -
Personally I like the setting. Like it has been said, it's futuristic, but still familiar enough. I especially like how the campaign was most likely inspired by the Persian Wars of antiquity (or was, at least, I don't know what the heck it's about now...). Also I'm looking forward to making scenarios about the conflict in the Pacific. Russophobic scenarios and terrorist hunting have been done to death in modern warfare games and also this series (including OFP), it's time to move on.

I'm not sure about the Mi-48, but at least in the case of the AH-99 the rockets are guided by a laser designator in the turret, so the rockets will go where ever the gunner is aiming at.

I really don't see either of these happening, at least not in the vanilla... Safety would be pointless in the end, and when it comes to jamming, finding a good occurrence ratio and balance would be tedious. Besides, the weapons using caseless ammunition would have an obvious advantage, and to counterbalance this, they would have to have an increased chance of overheating or even premature explosion of the ammunition.

Possible to have fun without microphone?
Thanath replied to BorisLozac's topic in ARMA 3 - BETA DISCUSSION
Personally with MP games I tend to go with the mentality that I really do not wish to hear other people making gurgling sounds in their mics. That being said, in a game like this and with the right kind of people, it might work. And like someone already put it, this game is not always that fast paced and text chat is a good way to communicate. I hope no one will be looked down on just because they are not using a mic. <.< -
In the mission editor Iran is mentioned in some places, also the markers list has the Iranian flag. As for the setting of the game, personally I feel that the devs drew much of the inspiration from the Persian Wars of 6th-5th centuries BCE. Trying to force this on a futuristic setting... *shrugs*
