Will-my-pc-run-Arma3? What cpu/gpu to get? What settings? What system specifications?
Groove_C replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
@Smart Games my build is from 2014 and with DDR3, so I don't want to wait anymore until Zen 3 with V-Cache in winter-spring 2022 or even Raptor Lake. I'm playing now. Your build is much newer and you have a very good DDR4. So waiting with it at least until Zen 3 with V-Cache isn't a problem at all. -

Yes. Zen 3 with V-Cache will have similar to Alder Lake performance, most probably for less money + you can keep your RAM. Should be available by winter-spring 2022. So you save $$$ on the CPU, with most probably same performance. And your DDR4 is top, compared to first DDR5, that you will have to buy, unlike your top DDR4 you already have. This expense or rather investment can at least be justified very very well. Much much better price/performance ratio. And on this you will have no problems to stay for years, until DDR5 frequency vs. timings vs. price mature and also big/little architecture and Windows scheduler. -

@Smart Games with what you have as CPU and RAM, you can easily skip Alder Lake and buy a badass Raptor Lake later, with more cache, higher frequency, with higher frequency and lower timings DDR5 and that the CPU memory controller will have no problems to support, price/performance ratio will be better and Windows scheduler will have improved a lot by then as well. -

I will see whether 16 threads will give higher FPS and/or more calm/stable frametime, in Arma. If FPS and frametime will be same as with just 8 cores, or lower, I will disable Hyper-Threading, for lower voltage/temperature/power consumption. -

Because the performance is not 20% better, but only up to 20% better. But for the new one you don't pay 20% of what your current PC cost you back then. You pay the full price of CPU + motherboard + DDR5, which is way way more than up to 20% better perf, in some scenarios only. So think twice. -

Almost nobody upgraded back then from 22 nm 4770K/4790K with top DDR3 to 6700K with slow and expensive DDR4. Most people simply skipped it. Only people with a 2600K upgraded and even then there were not many that did that. Now it's same. If you have 8-11th gen CPU, upgrading to 12th gen is just stupid. -

Most of i7-6700K couldn't even approach 5.0 GHz and most of them topped out at 3600/3733 MHz DDR4. i7-7700K had no problems with 5.0 GHz and higher and 4000 MHz RAM and higher. -

Like i7-6700K back in 2016, that supported DDR4 and DDR3. But DDR3 only on few low end motherboards. All the good motherboards were DDR4 only. And no need for reviews of Alder Lake. It will be faster and not thanks to DDR5, but thanks to better architecture of cores, that will compensate for slow and expensive DDR5. So it will be better than anything currently available, but prices will be very high and not corresponding to the added performance you receive. Better wait for Raptor Lake with more cache and support faster DDR5. Because even if you buy Alder Lake and later there will be better DDR5, you won't even be able to upgrade to better DDR5, because first CPUs and motherboards don't support as high RAM frequency, like always. It's similar to i7-6700K and later i7-7700K. 7700K supported higher frequency and lower latency DDR4 and Z270 motherboards, unlike 6700K and Z170 motherboards. -

Raptor Lake, after Alder Lake, will have bigger cache, higher frequency, will support faster DDR5 and by then, there will already be higher frequency and lower timings DDR5 for sale. Not like the first gen of DDR5, expensive, low frequency and high timings. No, thanks. -

Don't want 1st gen on new architecture with small cache, not so good performance and price + very expensive and slow DDR5. -

@Fabian Ihli better replace this slow G.Skill Ripjaws 3200 MHz by Ballistix 3600 MHz. It gives more FPS. -

@Fabian Ihli runs perfectly fine on Ryzen 5000. Just make sure NOT to buy RAM slower than 3600 MHz! Best performance/price is provided by these RAM kits: Crucial Ballistix 16GB 3600 MHz 16-18-18-38 (BL2K8G36C16U4B) Crucial Ballistix RGB 16GB 3600 MHz 16-18-18-38 (BL2K8G36C16U4BL) Crucial Ballistix 32GB 3600 MHz 16-18-18-38 (BL2K16G36C16U4B) Crucial Ballistix RGB 32GB 3600 MHz 16-18-18-38 (BL2K16G36C16U4BL) Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro motherboard is all you would need. Pro AC comes with integrated Wi-Fi. -

Simply changing random timings to random values won't help you much. Performance might be even worse or system unstable/crash. Need to google this. There are dozens of guides. You need to understand what works how and the dependencies and only then you start to OC RAM. It's science, not easy like GPU/CPU OC. -

All your timings are super mega ultra high. An exemple is tRFC 631! It could be 300 or even lower. TWR is at least 2 higher than it could have been, or even 3 times higher, if not 4 times higher. tREFI is 14029, but should be 65535. Etc. A lot of work and a lot can be optimised. -

Cinebench doesn't care about RAM at all. And again, no tuned secondary and tertiary timings but yet such conclusions. Just tune the RAM you already have as much as it's possible and that's it. Geekbench is really sensitive to RAM. -

Yes, there is a big variance in quality of Ryzen 5000 CPUs, which can result in noticeable performance difference in different applications. -

And the fact that you will try the RAM of your friend with slightly better but again only primary timings, will only confirm your suspicions that gains are only marginal. But it's completely wrong, since it's only primary timings, which are less important than secondary and tertiary timings and there are only 4 timings out of dozens of them in total. -

Groove_C replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
And again, increasing only RAM frequency and/or maybe lower only few primary timings won't give you much FPS. Dozens and no just few secondary and tertiary timings are all on auto and are very high and this is where additional FPS is lost. Leaving 3600 MHz XMP timings and simply going with same timings but 3800 MHz is useless. XMP profile only determines primary timings, RAM voltage and frequency and doesn't touch any of dozens of secondary and tertiary timings. So when you go from 3600 MHz to 3800 MHz and you think your timings are still same - they're not. It's only 4 first timings that don't change, but they also don't influence FPS much. Dozens of secondary and tertiary timings that are already very high on auto at 3600 MHz, when switching to 3800 MHz are even much much higher after frequency change. Because the motherboard tries to keep the system stable and makes secondary and tertiary timings too high rather than not let the system boot or crash. -

Leaving secondary and tertiary timings on auto at which they are very high, yes, gains will be marginal. -

@opus132 simply tune the one you have already. Changing only primary timings won't give you much. It's secondary and teritary timings that count.
