+1 The story should put you in situations where there's no "good choice" just the lesser of two evils. I hope Cpt Scott Miller isn't another cookie-cutter BLUFOR white knight. He's ex-SBS so surely he's been through some rough times and had to do things that have changed him as a person, and not necessarily for the better. I'm sure BIS are going to make him pretty badass, but I'd like to see a character that's not an archetype perfect, professional career soldier with no mistakes under his belt. Blur the lines between right and wrong please BIS:)

Yeah I'd say It's pretty important, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice a difference between the performance of Chernarus compared to Hazar-Kot or Proving Ground. I think view distance is the most important part, but once you go past a certain point on smaller maps your pretty much at the edge of the map anyway where there aren't any extra objects to be loaded. On top of that smaller maps have less objects over all and I always find they run smoother. I'm no expert on the inner-workings of the RV engine, this is just what I've personally experienced.

Infection (light zombie addon)
Clarkey1 replied to Einherj's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
If you want to play as any unit on the same side as the Zombies you can just add a group leader from the opposing side and set his probability of presence to 0%. -
You're right, that doesn't sound simple at all. I still have to totally agree with Takluzza here though. Devs, it's a milsim! Do all the things!:D

Awesome units Stagler. I've only noticed a small bug (well two I guess, they both involve the same object). Their is a weird glitch with the FSB Backpack's shadow. When in first person when using freelook and turning your head past about 90 degrees to the right and below 270 degrees to the left the shadow of this backpack appears to follow the center of the players screen and sort of 'floats' around on the ground, instead of being in place with the rest of the players shadow. This doesn't occur in third person view. Also when dropped on the ground it appears the backpack can't be picked back up. Pick up/Drop seems to function normally in the inventory. The FSB Patrol Pack seems to be fine though, it's just the Backpack. This was while using ACE2 so it's possibly just an issue somewhere with the ACE ruck system (I'll admit I haven't checked it without ACE yet). Anyway thought I'd let you know in case you hadn't seen this yet. Apart from that fairly small issue this is a pretty solid mod, having alot of fun with it. Thanks again for another cool Spetsnaz mod:)

Hahahah! "It's nothing serious, but I am bleeding badly".

These look awesome Colonel Stagler. As soon as they DL I'm off to crush some guerrilla's for Putin. I hope he doesn't get there first!:p Congrats on the release I'll keep an eye on this thread for updates and new units. Thanks mate.

Yeah I actually forgot about this little mention about facial animations at GC, which sort of makes my rant invalid because not having played the original OFP I would just love to see any sort of emotion in a firefight from the characters. Even if like you said they grinned half way through a firefight I don't see it being that unrealistic and it's still better than nothing. I've seen soldiers laughing and smiling while taking fire taped on helmet cams. Mind they're usually at relatively safe distances with good cover and I'm not sure how common it is when they know they're not being filmed. Anything would be better than the 'dead-eyed drones' as you put it which pretty much sums up ArmA2 faces perfectly. Ok so a little bit of a rant but at least we know BIS is working on facial expressions which is a detail I'm really happy about.:)

Thanks for the answer PuFu, sounds pretty reasonable, I hadn't actually thought about the rtt aspect or whether or not it would be in the Alpha. If the current screenshots (the majority of which are pre-alpha I think) are anything to go by I think my current rig might have trouble running it on anything above low-medium. The view distance of objects and terrain and the actual vd look huge (but honestly I can't run A2 maxed out so they might not look that big to users who can). If I remember correctly though, it was stated by Ivan (maybe someone else from BIS) at Gamescom that the data streaming would be improved by up to 4 or 6 times the speed of Arma2? Does this mean the speed at which the game grabs info from the hard drive? Or is there more to it than that, as in does this effect other pieces of hardware or just the hard drive? I'm thinking about getting an SSD anyway but will this mean the possiblity of having larger view distances and terrain/object detail without needing to get an SSD? The view distance and shadow distance increase just in the ToH community preview looked pretty amazing to me. Well I was actually more amazed by the fact that I had basically no noticeable performance hit from having a 10km vd which if I try at the moment in A2, kills my PC. I'm hoping to see similar tech for A3, it's very impressive and I might be able to run the Alpha at a decent frame rate for the time being without having to upgrade anything straight away.

Is the front left rifleman in screen 4 using that IFV as cover?! Maybe it's wishful thinking but I hope this is a sign that vehicles are getting cover/move to positions like buildings. It's hard to tell from a screen though, we need video's BIS! :)
-
Oh cool, looks like the one in the screen has one of those transparent magazines, they look great in OA with the G36. That Scorpion is one attractive weapon. Nice find on the screens btw. That view distance/grass draw distance *drools*.
-
Is that a G36 that the US tank crewman is holding in the fourth pic?
-
I think bullet holes in buildings would be kind of novel. I can't see it adding too much if your engaging from 400 500 meters out. As long as bullets still kick up dust and debris I'm pretty happy. That said if they did add it in you wouldn't hear me complaining. But the Humvee becoming suddenly bullet riddled after reaching a certain level of damage always looked pretty weird same goes for the instant change between normal texture to burnt-out texture (sometimes before a fire or explosion even begins:p). I'm more interested in the details for vehicle destruction. I think it could add a lot to have a door fly off after sliding into a tree, or a tyre bursting after a hard impact with a rock instead of just deflating. I guess when you think about it it's still more novel than it is useful but IMHO it would add more immersion than bullet holes. I think this kind of destruction this is in VBS already judging by a video that was on here a while back. Speaking of vehicles, does anyone feel like some of the vehicle interiors feel a little bit sterile? I mean they're isn't a scrap of evidence inside a Humvee that would point towards the fact that the guys driving it have probably been living in it for the last 48 hours. Not even a water bottle on the dashboard? These guys must be like camels!:p Just simple stuff like an open ruck on the backseat with some magazines/MREs in it when it's not occupied by a soldier or a playboy center page taped to the roof or inside of a door to make interiors feel a little bit more lived in. Even more if it's a WW3 scenario, these guys have probably been in their vehicles either driving or waiting around for orders for days on end. The soldiers uniforms have already gone down this path with OA with dirt on the knees and elbows to make it look as though they've been out on patrol for a while. I think theirs a saying that goes something like "An inspection ready soldier isn't ready for battle and a battle ready soldier isn't ready for inspection." And I can't help but think some of the vehicles in ArmA 2 were straight off the production line. I'm sure I can think of plenty more details I think my next rant will be about facial expressions or lack there of. Thanks for keeping this thread opened Max!:D

Is it worth me buying?
Clarkey1 replied to TheJumpMaster's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
It's worth every penny. :) -
How demanding is OA compared to Arma2 graphics wise?
Clarkey1 replied to paecmaker's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
OA has FXAA now and that has made the biggest difference between A2 and OA for me. I have AA disabled in the in-game options and have FXAA set to about 10 in the .cfg file. Massive improvement as far as I'm concerned, huge fps increase with a similar level of AA. Also disable threaded optimization on your GPU if you have a threaded CPU. I know OA is supposed to be compatible with it now but personally I still get better FPS with it disabled. -
Buying vehicles in Warfare that I can drive
Clarkey1 replied to Maglur's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Click the steering wheel to grey it out. Your vehicle will spawn empty. Same goes for commander and gunner icons on other vehicles and the padlock is just if you want the vehicle to spawn locked or unlocked. You can unlock via the action menu when near the vehicle. -
Something that puzzles me is why groups like this are trying to convince everyone that something as convoluted as this can be solved by taking out one man. Why don't they tell people that the $30 they spent on this bracelet kit they're selling could go towards eye surgery or similar procedures that could drastically improve someones quality of life or go towards a project to bring clean running water to a rural area rather than running around trying to tell everyone that this civil war that they apparently have no clue about can be stopped by keeping one hundred US military advisers in country for a few more years. Sure clean water and education and proper medical facilities might not stop a war overnight, but if you have a few generations of educated and healthy kids they're going to be less likely to grow up like Kony. Kony should be stopped but he isn't the root of the problem. EDIT: I know their are foundations focusing on these things which is good and does more towards the long term than Invisible Children will.

So when Joseph Kony was still a young man a rebel group calling themselves the NRA overthrew his government and as retaliation he ran off and joined another rebel group which he eventually became the leader of and renamed it the LRA. When his ranks grew thin he started abducting children and forcing them to fight for him to beef up his forces. Meanwhile the Ugandan Army now partially the NRA as they made an agreement that would see NRA forces join the Ugandan defense force. Needless to say some of the high ranking commanders of the former NRA were quite pissed about this as they sought to overthrow the Ugandan army and now their leaders had caved in to promises of wealth and a clean slate with the Ugandan Army because of their agreement with them. So these unhappy former commanders in the NRA left and went off to join other rebel groups in the area. One such commander, Odong Latek, was instrumental in convincing Kony to use standard military tactics over his "Cross formation". Now it's 2008, and apparently US advisers have been in Uganda for some time now. The Ugandan army has obviously been trying to stop Kony but now they have US logistics and US support in the planning phase of an operation that is to be conducted by the Ugandan Army, the Sudanese Liberation Army and the DR Congo defense force. It's interesting to note that Kony isn't actually in Uganda when this Operation takes place nor has he been for some time now. This coalition strikes and fights it's way into Kony's suspected stronghold, they find his camp and burn it down, no sign of Kony. So now it's 2012 and a man who has known a boy named Jacob (who was formerly one of Kony's child soldiers) for 10 years to whom he made a promise that he would stop Kony and stop the LRA has gotten together with his hipster buddies to try and rally support for this cause. Fair enough, this Joseph Kony is clearly a terrible person and he shouldn't be allowed to continue his activities in central Africa. Here are a few of my problems with his methods though and I'm not saying it's not a good cause, I'm just trying to see the reality of the situation and not just take the video at it's word (because we all know that would just be retarded). So point one. Kony has been calling peace talks and agreeing to Ugandan peace talks for years now. Only thing is, Kony just uses these to give himself some breathing room to rearm and regroup. Now if Kony has gone into hiding in the DR Congo or wherever because he knows the US are aiding the Ugandan army, what do think he's doing? He's probably rearming and regrouping. I'm not saying that this is Invisible Children's fault, no matter how big their part was in getting the US advisers sent to Uganda the fact is that the US went there. Now Kony is laying low and probably regrouping and biding his time until this blows over. So now if he isn't caught he will probably come back even stronger than he was before. Now onto the Kony captured scenario. If this guy is captured, and I hope he is, I'm guessing the LRA won't just disperse. You could argue that Kony is a religious fanatic and his followers are all brainwashed into believing that god is speaking through him, so if you take out Kony the groups divine leadership will be gone and they will most likely fall apart. Although it's not as though Kony doesn't have commanders and it isn't as though those commanders wouldn't want to do what he's doing, you just know there is a commander waiting for his chance to take power and lead the LRA himself. Now this could cause a power stuggle equally as damaging as if Kony had no one below him that wasn't just a brainwashed thug but there's always the chance that some of his commanders actually have a pretty good idea of how to continue running the LRA in Kony's absence and won't let his death or capture affect that. Another scenario. The US gets so much public pressure that they have to send in more military intervention and really try to stabilize Uganda instead of just sending in 100 advisers and hoping people just forget about the whole thing in a few years (which is apparently happening now, hence the video and the December 31'st deadline). Even if Kony is captured but the public realizes stopping Kony is not the same as stopping the entire LRA insurgency this could pressure the US into another Afghanistan. I'm not saying the LRA is anything like the Taliban I simply don't know. All I mean is the US probably doesn't need another prolonged counter-insurgency focused on training the local forces to stabilizing a country that has been ravaged by civil wars and foreign intervention (and it's own Army at leas in part comprised of former rebels) for many years. So to me these Invisible Children hipsters, no matter how noble their cause, are basically supporting one rebel group versus another because of a naive promise one man made to a Ugandan boy 10 years ago and they're trying to achieve it by the only means hipsters know. Posters and Public assemblies. If they do succeed good for them, it could be the first step down a road to the stabilization of Central Africa. But probably their will just be one less warlord, a big warlord, but just another warlord none the less. And those big boots will eventually get filled by someone else. Am I in the ballpark?

I guess this thread is for ArmA 3 as in the final product but I can't see the point of creating a new thread for a question that most likely can't be answered in depth just yet. Do you think a system that can run the Alpha would be able to run the final product? Now this is only assuming we get the full map of Limnos with just a few small bits of content to drill for bugs with more gradually added over time. Does anyone have any sort of insight though? Could it maybe even be possible with this scenario that it would actually run even better leading up the final release as it will be better optimized? I'm nowhere near an expert on game development but I thought maybe some of you guys that make mods or happen to be computer hardware guru's might have an idea (or even a BI dev?;)). I guess that if we just get a small flat terrain to test vehicles and weapons on the performance will be drastically reduced when running the actual Limnos map. tl;dr If I can get the A3 community Aplha running smoothly (or not) on my computer do you think this is any indication of how the final product will run or will it be too soon to tell? Note: to be more specific when I say 'run' I mean a decent frame rate anywhere from 30-40 with whatever graphics settings are necessary to achieve this.

Ahh Red Dead Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Redemption! Woo! But in all seriousness I'm actually interested in this, I'm pretty much sick of Ezio. I agree that Conor looks really out of place in this reveal trailer but I guess customization will still be in and you'll end up with more native American attire throughout the game than the trailer shows e.g "You've unlocked the 'Mohawk Scout' outfit or w/e". As for it not making sense that an Italian family ending up in America... Umm what? Ok so the main period of immigration for Italians to America only began in the 1800's but that's not saying that Ezio's rich ass family couldn't have moved there beforehand to get the Assassin's up and running in the new world. The thing is though, that this new ancestor is the son of an English man and a native American woman, so at some point Desmond's bloodline went to Britain (which would have made an equally good setting for the game IMHO) and then moved to the American colonies for whatever reason. Possibly because the assassins needed a cell in the colonies to keep the Templar's in check in the new world. Which would have probably happened well before the revolution unless the assassin's had their heads up their asses. The main point though is that Desmond is American, so one way or another, if we like it or not, Desmond's Assassin bloodline reached the shores of America at some point in history. As for "The evil british controlled by the templars fight against the brave US protected by the Assassins." you might have a point here which would truly be a disappointment as I'd rather have a good story that tries to keep the whole good and evil thing ambiguous enough so that I don't feel as though I'm playing an American revolutionary with some cool slow-mo finishing moves but rather just a man who has to make some tough decisions and whether they're perceived as good or evil are up to each player without being nudged in any particular direction by the writers... with some cool slow-mo finishing moves. Ubisoft has said that their will be just as many bad guys and good guys on each side though so we should find ourselves killing either side indiscriminately with all the tech of the times which is the most important thing:).

If this uniform thing works anywhere near as well as the system in Hitman I'd be happy. I'm sure there will be some cool uses for it in the campaign and mod makers could probably have a field day with it. Also you could make some pretty awesome Tier One style missions with a hitman type of system. e.g Blending in with the locals, trying not to come into contact with enemy patrols lest they work out your not very Greek looking close up and decide to arrest/shoot you on the spot. That brings up more questions, could it be possible to actually conceal weapons? Or will there be an in depth POW system: Get arrested and steal and enemy uniform to help you escape...? And have the ability to capture enemy troops and put them in your own POW camp? :omg:

EDIT: Deleted, way off topic..:o

I almost forgot about that one! Ok so, Scenario 6 is global nuclear exchange and now Scenario 7 is Zombie Apocalypse. Well I'm going to have to change my guess to Scenario 7 here, it's only a matter of time before some pharmaceutical company or some biological weapons research branch of the military comes up with the "Z strain" and it gets released into civilization. Time to stock up on ammo and MRE's, it looks like we'll be inna woods for a while after this one.:p
