    Development Blog & Reveals

I'm not sure this is the right place to pose this question, but I was just wondering: who makes up BIS's research staff? Do they have combat veterans on the payroll to test things out make suggestions? Do they want one? :p
  2. Traditionally, the K designation denotes a command variant in the realm of Russian armored vehicles. I'm not saying that has to be the answer here. I'm just saying that's traditionally what it means.

That's the one! I'd really like to see them both, but vehicles like these may be a bit too specialized and therefore not be part of the original content. They'd make a great addon in that case. *hint hint*

That's badass. Don't the Swedes have a 120mm mortar vehicle that can do MRSI as well? I seem to remember playing with something like that years ago in OFP. I think it had two barrels and some insanely high rate of fire.

BIS at the GC: Very kind!

Maybe a side SAPI? It was a little strange.

BIS at the GC: Very kind!

I kinda thought the same thing about the death effect there. However, people sometimes look rather unnatural when they get shot in real life. The "headshot chicken dance" is an example of that. High velocity rifle rounds hitting the body can cause some strange effects on the nervous system. The other situations looked natural, so I guess you could chalk it up to "weird shit happens". edit I see what you mean now.

I agree, Rawr. I went through SOI back in '07, a few years after the Marine Corps had fully adopted the RCO. By that time, both eyes open was the ONLY way to use your RCO. The instructors had some pretty clever methods of stressing the importance of peripheral vision, like smacking you on the left side of the head if they saw your eye closed haha. That said, I know some of our snipers shot with both eyes open, and others closed their non-firing eye with the higher powered optics. They're not a real good example, though, because most of our snipers couldn't hit shit.

Vehicle Cargo Bays and Passenger Realism

Yea, I know, man. I never was the best swimmer either. Hated that shit.
  11. Not be nit-picky, Carl, but green/yellow/red/black are actually the colors we use in an ACE report (Ammo, Casualties, Equipment). I just think this would add a tiny little touch of immersion, especially when controlling AI or when reporting your team's status to your squad/platoon leader in multiplayer. Everything else sounds pretty much on point to me.

Vehicle Cargo Bays and Passenger Realism

^^Escaping a ditched helicopter isn't easy, but its certainly doable with some training. After you do a couple rounds in the dunk trainer (forget the acronym right now) you get past the "automatic freak-out" response and start thinking about how to survive. Finding the escape hatch in the dark, upside down can still be kind of a bitch, though.

  14. Perhaps the Iranians still aren't that industrialized, so they set out with kind of the inverse of the German plan in the Battle of the Bulge. The Germans had plenty of tanks, but not enough fuel, so they planned to capture the Allies fuel supplies and use it to drive their attack. Maybe the Iranians don't have a whole lot of vehicles (especially as NATO exhausted their supplies of the anti-armor JSOW on them), but have plenty of fuel. So, they set out with a plan to capture vehicles as they go. The political climate could mean that NATO wouldn't come to the aid of Israel in a "regional conflict". Even now, isolationism is becoming a pretty popular idea in America. The Iranians could whip up quite a bit of support in the region, I'm sure. The current president of Iran has been making moves to try and secularize much of their society in order to facilitate the emergence of Persia as a major player in the world once again. That would mean major gains in science and technology, as can be seen from what has been released about the game thus far. So, the Iranians et al. could very possibly overrun Israel with their numbers and similar technology. I know the last part kind of contradicts the first part. Lets just call it complex rather than paradoxical.

Indirect fire and a decent AI reaction to it would be pretty cool to have out of the box.

    Stealth Kills?

Knives are most effective in a combat environment for: Opening MREs Cutting 550 cord Adjusting your RCO Cleaning fingernails Opening mail Not so much for slicing and dicing terrorists

    Stealth Kills?

Its probably over five pounds when you have the NVG mounts on it. If you could get on top of your opponent and bring that kevlar down on his face with both hands, it would be pretty devastating. That's what we call a "weapon of opportunity". We used to grapple with our gear on. Its a real pain in the ass, but its doable. And the E-tool kill was like a coveted, holy grail-type accomplishment. We used to joke around about it. There are running cadences centered on it. If anyone ever got one, he'd have my never-ending respect.

    Stealth Kills?

The only really quiet way to kill someone with a knife is stabbing through the back of the head right at the base of the skull. It requires a very precise strike, a lot of force, and extremely close proximity. Cutting the neck tends to make a loud gurgling noise as the air escaping the severed windpipe passes through the blood of the severed arteries. Stabbing the chest presents much the same problem, plus you need a blade long enough to damage vitals and a precise strike between the targets ribs. If he's wearing gear, you can pretty much forget about any kind of body strike. Some helmets would also prevent or hinder the aforementioned strike to the head. I always planned that if I ended up in a hand-to-hand struggle, I'd just pull my helmet off and beat him in the face with it. Knife-wise, I only carried a little 3" folding knife. Knives require the kind of fine finger dexterity that you just don't have when your adrenaline is pumping, your heart is pounding, and you're fighting for your life. Your helmet, on the other hand, is right there on your head. No fumbling around for the little handle. You could take your helmet off and smash someone with it even if you didn't HAVE fingers.
  19. Stop hating on the rail gun so much. Don't you guys ever watch future weapons? In a few years, they'll be testing them on ships. Tanks and mortars are right behind that. If we get some kind of major breakthrough in capacitor technology, which they're working very hard at, we could see it even sooner.
  20. What's your 3rd safety rule? Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you're ready to fire. Even in combat. Lets make that especially in combat since you tend to do a lot of running around with the weapon on fire.

    ACE for OA 1.11

That's called hand-held, sonny. You attach the cannon to the M8 assault plate, and you can fire HE on charge 0 or 1. There's a little range indicator on the trigger guard with a floating bubble to help you adjust your elevation. As for deflection, you use a precise method we call "eye fucking". You do all this on trigger-fire of course. You orient the weapon downrange, drop the round in (getting your hand out of the way of course in case the firing pin didn't get the memo that its trigger fire), fine tune your aim, and squeeze the trigger.

    ArmA3 Wishlist and Ideas

There are quite a few games in which the AI will fire and maneuver on your last known position. Something like that would be quite acceptable in my opinion.

    They better have female soldiers...

Seriously, most women get so scared in combat that they become a giant burden rather than any kind of asset. I've seen female Marines shoot at other Marines 50 meters away because they were too scared and confused to identify their targets.

Nested Server Farms. HLA for games?

Could that be done with one game, or would it have to be several modules like the army system? Would you dumb it down a little to make it more gamey and fun, or would you make it strictly a simulation? I think its a great idea.

    Medics from "Out-of-Team" Healing

Combat medicine isn't all stop the bleeding, start the breathing, protect the wound, treat for shock. Medical providers have to keep everyone in good health so they can stay in the fight. As far as allergies go, you get a red dog tag in your right boot listing your allergies so the trauma unit knows what they can give you. People with severe allergies have their own prescription stuff to fight it. And don't forget that the same corpsmen/medics that treat your wounds in combat also see you at sick call when you're back in the states. They know the full spectrum of medicine. You get your own little combat pill pack when you get in country with an anti-inflammatory, painkiller, and antibiotic. I never asked what all was in it since I don't have any allergies, but I'm pretty sure its all hypo-allergenic. It wouldn't do for someone to have an allergic reaction to the medicine that is supposed to keep them from going into shock. I'm not suggesting that sick call should be added to the game. I'm just clarifying for those who didn't know how it works.
