The ServerBrowser is killing the game
Banshee replied to Hud Dorph's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - Servers & Administration
If you don't need any mods from a custom repository, try the new tool from SIX: http://play.withsix.com :) -
Linux server 1.62.96687 alpha
Banshee replied to Dwarden's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
We just played a Lingor Warfare Mission for about 3 hours straight on the latest build. After disabling Battleeye and the Gamespy stuff, it worked quite well. Alltough a server without Gamespy is not really usefull, it looks promissing. :) -
Do you still have problems or questions? If so, you can try to get help in the Skype chat (see my signature).
-
It's been tested and reported as broken like hell. Don't bullshit us by trying to tell everyone that we're just crying but not doing anything. Hell some very experienced devs even offered help.

Hello Maruk, I thought you would know about the issue, but let me explain it to you once more: BI patched the game up to 1.62 trough Steam and other sources. With an 1.62 installation the only way to play on a linux server at the moment is to use an very old beta (94700). This can be served trough a custom repository on SIX Updater for example. But this is only an option for closed communities with a regular playerbase that use this sort of mechanism. All the public servers running on Linux simply don't get any players playing on them because players are told by the game to update to 1.62 and can't join with that version. This results in the few public servers that run on windows beeing full all the time while the linux servers that are still payed for by your dedicated customers are empty. Of course you can decide to not support linux servers in the future anymore. But expect much less servers beeing hosted for your customers by your customers. This simply is the result of two main reasons: 1. Windows servers cost much more money monthly. 2. Linux servers seemed to be much more performant due to the less overhead produced by the base operating system. With all respect but delaying 1.62 for Linux Server would be the only option that's reasonable. Obviously this would mean, that you'll need to throw a little more money on the problem by maybe getting some more coding resources that have the knowledge to deal with that problem. Having no guarantee that the linux server won't be delayed for a reasonable amount of time (not talking about hours or a few days, but we are talking about several weeks now) is not good for anyone who is going to invest money into running public linux servers in the future. So please answer a simple question: Will you take the concerns raised here serious and promisse better handling of the patching situation in the future or not? For Arma2 and for Arma3 as well. Or is your official statement: We might give you some linux server if we can, but don't count on it? If so, we will shift our investments to get a Windows server and maybe even not run a public server (wich we did in the past and planned for Arma3) at all.

Linux servers are not supported currently. There is no 1.62 patch nor a 1.61 patch. We have to work with old outdated beta versions served trough a custom repository for our closed community. All the public servers are idling around, costing money (not BIS money obviously, but our money). We normally gladly pay that money. But if we can't even play, then of course we are getting angry. This simply shows that there is no focus on this topic currently. And that's the point that makes us angry. We pay a lot of money to supply BI with multiplayer servers and now can't even play on our own servers. And there is nothing that shows us that resolving this issue is to any priority for BI. Just keep on doing those DayZ servers. They're community hosted as well and they sell more copies than the normal servers. Right!
-
In all honesty W0lle, but you are not helping at all. Linux servers have been around for quite a while now. Noone ever said that they won't be supported anymore. Otherwise communities would not have rented or even bought some. Please acknowledge that BI is not running any official servers. The multiplayer part of the game is relaying on community sponsored servers. Some of the biggest servers run on linux (as allready pointed out in diffrent places). So without an official announcement of the discontinuation for Linux server support, we simply can assume that they are part of the product. In fact they have to be if BI still wants their customers happy playing on servers. We payed exactly a lot for the development of Linux Server binaries. We payed for our game, we payed hundreds of euros to run gameservers that BI doesn't run, providing BI customers with a long term game experience they expected from the game. Most of the people did buy the game for multiplayer, not for SP. SP never was Armas strong point. So please stop telling us to STFU and show some respect for all the time, effort and money WE invested into keeping us and other players happy while playing Arma and therefore keeping the playerbase happy and dedicated to the game. Without the long term multiplayer, the community made content, the community hosted servers and missions, Arma would be a singleplayer game that sucks ass for most people. This results in less sales for the next game and other games such as TOH. If it wasn't for the multiplayer I would not even have bougth ArmA 1.

Heyho, Tier1operations will be at the gamescom with around 20 people together with Sickboy and others from the SIX Updater/SIX Launcher/Play with SIX staff. We will visit the GamesCom at friday and are thinking about opening some space for other Arma players to join in for a beer in cologne in the evening. If there is enough intrest shown in this thread, I'll go ahead and organize a place in cologne depending on the numbers. Either at the lovley shore of the Rhein with some beer and maybe some barbecue or in one of the great places in cologne such as the big beergarden near the university for a community meetup. Anyone intrested? If so, please state your participation here, so we can organize something. Further information will be passed to everyone via PM (including a cellphone number to contact us).
-
We will be here gaffelamdom.de at 2030.
-
We'll be there on saturday as well, but have kind of a private day then. So friday is the best day for us, but I'll talk to the guys.
-
I think we'll do it in the evening, so around 1900-open end. Zipper, I hope you'll bring along some other people from the booth. If not we'll detach one or two fireteams to pick you up. :P Guys, please stop the off topic stuff.

Tier1 will be at Gamescom with around 20 people from all over europe together with Sickboy and some others. We are planning on having some beers with everyone who is there on friday evening in cologne. To organize it a little, I've set up this thread: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?138687-GamesCom-meet-amp-greet&p=2206410#post2206410 If you're intrested in joining forces to invade some nice beergarden or pub, please let us know and we'll make it happen.

ARMA 2: OA beta build 95248 (1.62 MP build)
Banshee replied to Dwarden's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
We totally understand that and just ask that it'll be handled better in the future. That's all what our bitching and moaning is about. At least from my side. :) -
ARMA 2: OA beta build 95248 (1.62 MP build)
Banshee replied to Dwarden's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
Seriously? Yes. But much more I'd preferr a headless dedicated server install for Linux wich will be as up to date as the windows stuff. -

Hey please tone it down. We do not know the exact insights on the process. Most likley it's possible to streamline all that a little better with the right resources. :) -

Studios who want to sell their next generation game (Arma3, TOH). :) I like how I am not the only one complaining anymore. But I fear we have to face it. BI doesn't have an update strategy that cares about all users beeing catered. Beta versions and updates are pushed ASAP to get more feedback ASAP. That's how it is. And BI has clearly stated that linux servers are not their priority. That's bad for us and bad for BI because some of their most widley used community hosted servers run linux. We had BI splitting the userbase apart with 1.60 as well. Steam users couldn't play because there was no update. Instead of waiting until 1.60 is avaible on steam they pressed it to the other clients to get bugreports. Understandable or not that's how it went. Steam users waited 1-2 weeks for 1.60 afaik. As for Windows vs. Linux servers: I have a list from 21st of june 2012 with 1787 servers in total. 195 of them are Linux DS and 984 are Windows but not DayZ and 640 are DayZ servers. If we now only collect the data from active servers this means for a playercount above: 21.06.2012 17.00 CEST: 0 = 984 Windows and 195 Linux Servers 10 = 24 Windows and 8 Linux Servers 20 = 8 Windows and 6 Linux Servers 40 = 1 Windows and 3 Linux Servers 26.07.2012 14:00 CEST: 0 = 983 Windows and 180 Linux Servers 10 = 30 Windows and 0 Linux Servers I will try to do another measuring around prime time tonight if GameSpy lets me. But yeah, this maybe allready shows that 20% of the servers ran Linux and a lot of the high playercount (actual playing) servers are linux. At least pre 1.62. :P -
Warning! - 6 updater users and latest beta patch to 1.61 - Multiplayer problems
Banshee replied to PELHAM's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Yes in SIX Launcher you can uncheck the "update beta version" box in the options. However if you update to a 1.61 beta you can simply delete the beta folder and apply a 1.60 beta patch to play on 1.60 servers again. ;) -
