    Arma 2 Worth the Online Play?

    Yes, the game is a little buggy, but thats mainly because its so flexible. Like say the Morrowind games. The best thing about this is, believe it or not, the huge amount of "types" of online experiences you can get. Wanna build and command stuff. Play CTI, Warfare or similar. Wanna do PvP. Join a PVP server ala Valhall or similar. Wanna do coop. Join a coop mission, or join a few friends and start a mission downloaded from Armaholic or similar. Wanna do the "GTA like thing". Join a "insert map name" Life server Wanna gun down a city with a minigun, try all types of armor ever made or fly a biplane vs a Euro fighter. Download mods. Sick of modern stuff? Download a World war 2 mod, Vietnam mod or similar and play them online. (The amount of servers for mods depends how new or popular it is obviously, but you get the idea.) On top of that. If you have a special play style you like and you get tired of random server issues, which all games have, there are a ton of specialized clans out there that play from light core to hard core, team oriented to drunk... "orientated..." and so on:)

    How much RAM does the typical ArmA player got?

    I have 6gb in triple channel on a X58 motherboard, but I only have access to about 3-4gb because I use a 32bit OS. Never really had any issues with Arma 2 after they fixed the memory leak like issues a long time ago.

    Like I said before. You dont really need default key bindings for the AI commands, but anyway. If the main profile is having issues completing the commands when you successfully trigger a voice command its because you probably have to low fps while playing the game. The reason in this case some of the commands dont seem to work is because VAC is pressing the buttons faster than your ingame menus, with lower fps, can react to them. I recommend you try to import one of the slow profiles from the Slow folder in the zip file. (Its this kind of issues its for.) If you import the slow mirror file of the one you already have, thats the one you have already imported but also has the _SLOW.xml at the end, you can also use a voice command to switch between the two. ------------------------ Nice to hear you like it :).
  4. Pilfius is what I would call a Windows XP only program. If you run Vista or Win7 VAC would probably be the better choice and save you allot of hassle. If you are running XP you can just as well try Pilfius yourself since its free. VAC costs less than a DVD or most DLC content. The big difference between the two programs is that VAC has way more features overall, but Pilfius has an ability VAC dosent and that is that Pilfius can understand constructed sentences out of single voice commands. In VAC you would for example need both: "One" to select F1, "do not move" to select 1-6 and "one do not move" to select F1-1-6 to use all of the three commands. In Pilfius you would only need: "One" to select F1. "do not move" to select 1-6. If you then said "One do not move" it would understand to press F1-1-6 without having the command or a pause between the words "one" and "do" to execute the contextual correct thing. For advanced key pressings etc VAC is better though. Still, it would be cool if it got that one Pilfius ability as well. I havent tried Pilfius and I dont know if that feature produces more false responses or not, but on paper it sounds cool.

    Thx :) If you have a heavy accent maybe, but they should be balanced. Over time the Windows voice software that VAC uses will understand your voice better as well. If there are English words that you have a real issue with saying. For example "two" (2), where it might sound more like "too" or whatever. There is a free program called TextCrawler. With this program you can load in the xml file and replace for example the word "two" with something that is easier for Windows voice to understand in regards to how you say it. For example the word eight (8) is easier understood by the program if its listening for "ate" instead. "ate get down" instead of "Eight get down" and so on. Just put in what you want to change, then what you want it changed to and click a button. Takes less than a min.
  6. Ok, so I take it the VAC gray mic desktop icon already has a blue P and a green O when you try the orders and that you are using v304 of the profile? If VAC test works, the program is working. Default keyboard is not needed for most of the orders, but if you for example have set map to L and say "open map" the program will press default m... Most of the AI orders however are internationally default keys like spacebar, F1-F12, 0-9 etc. All those orders should work regardless and thats like 90% of the profile orders already. For the others read the readme about the INT profile. You can also alter any of the keys you want in VAC builder. Just remember that both slow and fast profile are two separate ones.

    Steam - opinions and experiences survey

    I would vote a strong maybe... :j: I like Steam. Depending on how games are released. Automatic patching is great and you can turn it off if you need a game for a mod that only support patch X. Still, in regards to Arma I still use a third party launcher to start the game. Some times doing that excludes stats being uploaded to Steam or being able to use the ingame browser etc. The Steam launch of AO wasnt that great for people that already owned A2. I would view that as a minus running Steam. You always seem to be the second guy in the line to get whatevers new.

    Thx for the response. In regards to the tanks I was wondering more in the balance thing towards more realistic ballistics speed/arch, range scoop settings, hits and such I asked about a few weeks ago. If if was still in mind for this release or put on hold because of other stuff. More armor is always welcomed of course. :)

    A few questions: *Is the "rest" weapon function automatic, a quick menu option or...? *Are tanks being updated for this release or are they pushed back? Didnt see any tank stuff in the video so...just wondering.
  14. I dont know how to prevent them from using AA missiles toward the ground. If you dont want them to use AA missiles, but you do want them to use bombs you could try something I did for a BMP3 I only wanted to use 20mm ammo vs infantry. What I did was simple. Add the unit on the map, set the ammo bar to zero and use the, example, "this addmagazine "30Rnd_762x39_AK47" in the unit box. This way, if the ai attacked something it would only be able to attack with the weapon I wanted it too use. Link (Ctrl+F mk82) this addmagazine "3Rnd_Mk82 "; this addweapon "Mk82BombLauncher"; or if it dosent work try... this addweapon "Mk82BombLauncher"; this addmagazine "3Rnd_Mk82 "; Note: You might need to add the launcher as well first when you sett ammo to zero, it depends on the weapon on the unit. Example if you set ammo to zero on a tank you want to fire smoke you need to add the launcher as well as the ammo even when the tank has smoke launchers, but you dont with the 20mm cannon etc... test and try. Lastly if you want more than one mag you must repeat the whole addmagazine line to add more bombs. The xx bombs didnt work of me when I tried this a long time ago.

    You can overlap keybindings as long as they dont conflict in their roles. For examples there is no problem having turn in/out keys the same as kneel down or go prone because the roles, car/inf, dont conflict. However, the same dosent apply to stuff like the map, which can be used in every "role".

    Red unit after heal: Tell the unit to report status. Fx-5-5 Getting a unit to shoot sooner: Tell the unit to target something and then tell him to stop. He will then usually engage the enemy from that range, within reason of course, even if its not optimal. Note that their aim will be reduced and that if they keep missing they might waste allot of ammo. Fx-2-x, Fx-1-6 Getting troops to mount/heal faster. This cant really be done without changing the mission and adding a repeatable radio command that will set all your AI to "careless", a option not/missing (Menu 7-5) in the command menu. This will force them over to careless even if they are in "auto danger" and they will go strait to where they are told without any over watch etc, but during contact the downside is that you cant just set one unit into "careless" this way only everyone under your command. You use the normal command menu to put them back to "aware", "safe" etc.. If you are really into command AI troops you should take a look at voice commands. Makes the experience a lot less frustrating and faster to execute. See my sig for more info on one such solution.
  18. Just FYI. I dont know why, installed it two times now, but after PMC the file DSound.dll, which belongs to Acre, crashes the game during launch. Removing the file or uninstalling acre makes the game work fine again. Reinstalling Acre (1.1.0.234) didnt help, same issue.
  19. The press and hold is a great addition, but I still think they could improve it. Keep press and hold like it is. Add a single quick click for a over the wall lob with a faster animation and a double click mod for quick sideways throw into a door or similar.

    Nice mod! :D Having a few issues though, but I am guessing you are planning on adding all the features before you start ironing out the bugs... One thing I wonder though is if its possible to add the extra functions to the custom or communications area. Would probably make it easier for the average guy to use em. If stuff like that is mission dependent maybe a editor module you just place in the mission would do the trick. I just find the custom action to conflict with something after action 3... A2 is probably the only game I play where a keyboard hasnt enough keys it seems LoL.

    I have a question: Are there any plans on tweaking tank combat? -The range optics works as intended, but the actual range seems off. -The shell hits are really unrealistic, its like the Warrior all over again with huge splash damage explosions on shell hits (excluding the tank blowing up and actual HE shells of course). -Multi hit short range to kill most tanks. I know most people think the Tiger 1 is a super tank, but it wouldnt really survive even a Sherman at 50-100m. The other way around, where the 88mm Tiger shots a Sherman at 50-100m, needs several shots to kill it seems even more unrealistic. -Maybe this is a Arma issue, but the shells seems slow and arch way to much in regards to range. Maybe I notice it much more in a wwii tank because there are more simulator games to compare to... Right now I even think the standard, AP/HE shell setup in Arma. Where the AP round gives a small "20mm HE" like effect on the enemy armor before it blows..., is much more satisfying to play than the multi ammo types with seemingly HE effects on most in i44. The over use of HE like effects and unrealistic multi hits to disable etc just feels so arcady.

    Can anyone using Steam confirm that the Steam patches v1.08 etc are live? I currently have 1.07 which I am unsure if ever was released on Steam so if I turn on the autoupdate to early the client might try to force downgrade, which will probably break stuff, I reckon.

    Nvidia GTX580 benchmark ArmaII

    Looking at the specs of this card it just seems like a slightly hardware tweaked GTX480. Its probably going to be the best Dx11 card for a while since ATI sucks at Dx11, but it would be interesting to see how well this card does in the game compared to the next ATI card. Even the ATI 5970 did poorly in that game, because of allot of studdering even with higher fps, compared to the GTX480, which ran more smoothly at a lower fps, but you could still see that the card was giving it all it got, but still coming up a bit short in regards to what performance people would want.
