  1. Yeah the editor rocks.... I had OFP and ARMA for years, I plodded though Arma but after a while it got uninstalled... Then the hype came for A2. I was playing alot of Americas Army3 at the time, had been since the beginning 8 years ago. With the new release of AA3 and the fact that it was free, what was a cool game and community became a whinny brat fest of rambos even though you get more points for healingh and teamwork than for killing. Most of the old guard in Americas Army are still playing ver2.8 because of this. So I got irritated and the game play just sucked, plus they have some bugs to workout. When it wasent fun anymore I pulled out the old box-o-software and reinstalled Arma. Now I had played the campaign before and was like....eh....its ok.... I like the style of play but something was always a little desolate about Arma, I dont really like spec ops with nvg where you just crawl around. I like squad based tactics....... So i dink around with it alittle bit and then I noticed a button Ive never noticed before that sez "editor" Drop a few opfor........make some friendlies..... instant 2 hr battle...... ok...hmmm...try some new things .... how does that work?.....check the forums.....oh scripting.....ok.....arg ....... frustrated and mad!!! ....... ok wait......Kylanis post.....read read......try again..... SUCCESS:yay:....... Happy .....Happier.....Ecstatic So anyway, after making and uploading about 10 good missions of varying types I am now finishing up a mini-trailer campaign to a larger and bigger campaign I would like to release! As the others had mentioned, the campaign runs really slow for me, playble but not optimal. So the user campaigns and missions are great because they tend to run smoother....also the other islands and terrains are a huge improvment in smoothness and game play. ok so thats Single player stuff..... now throw in the whole multiplyer side and the missions to be made...... and the mods....ohhh the mods........... This game is limitless and the only bounderies are spare time and imagination. Its a powerfull tool in the right hands... What ever you do with ARMA You can have hours and hours of fun. Oh...and aircraft dont taxi well.....dont waste your time....there are some 3rd party scripts out there that remedy this. Welcome Aboard

Why are public games in ArmA II so terrible?

I have to say I am impressed by the level of maturity in the ARMA comminity. This thread would have deteriorated into flame wars on any other forum. Kudos guys Ive been frequenting 2 servers So far the most well organized is the Tactical Gamer servs...very structured and fun. TG tends to switch maps every mission and this is alot of fun. the Other one is the 3rd Marine which is a little loser in regards to comms and what not but still very team oriented. They mostly due domination. Not hyping either for any reason but fun. 3rd MD has an event a 4pm est tonight and Tactical Gamer holds events on sundays. I missed the last TG event but it looks like the had 80 people and were all well organized into units and commands.

Why are public games in ArmA II so terrible?

I think the majority of people contributing to the community and forums are team players and like minded in that sense. I mean, that why ARMA is cool becasue its slow and tactical not a run and gun game. Arma/OFP people yern for the low and slow approach and then ripping apart the enemy from good fire positions. I also do favor a no respawn game with limited revives. I think Americas Army has really implemented the medic thing well. I havent used ACE but Im sure someone with good scripting could replicate what AA3 has done. No respawn makes teamwork necessary, no one want s to peek around the corner first when you dont come back to life in 30 secs. As far as contributions...I make SP missions, others host servers... When I play, I play for the team , reviving, repairing, transporting. I may not have sent a paypal to help pay for the server but in game I will do the dirty work and make it fun for all....I think every one can contribute to the Arma community and gameplay in theyre own way.. The people who have good servers should post them here. Maybe we should all just play together on the same server :o

Why are public games in ArmA II so terrible?

But the Admins come here and read these....;) It dosent matter if your on TS or not. Ive sat for hours on TS with no one saying a thing. Same fofr VOIP. To your point though, TS does create a better teamplay platform. Having said that.......I now have to have Vent, TS, Xfire and what ever else the servermeister decided to tack on because for some reason no one seems to think the built in VOIP works, maybe needs a patch but I havent had any problems in ARMA2 with VOIP. And its not complaining, as I have provided feedback and remedies as well. Thats called constructive critism.;) And that was the point of the thread wasnt it, to discuss the problems and issues of gameplay on the multiplayer servers. So no complaining, just discussing the pros and cons and what works better or worse to better enjoy the overall gaming experience in Arma2.:)

Why are public games in ArmA II so terrible?

You post is dead on. I think the command and control is the biggest issue. Commanders need to retain control troughout the mission. I see alot of preplanning but once the bullets start flying the orders come less frequent and there is no inititive to regroup and rearm or hold positions. Everybody just charges for the target until you have a string of wounded and out or ammo infantry in the wake. You must move slow from point to point to keep control and commands need to come every minute or so to keep people on track...This is Command and Control......this will prevent Fog of War and Blue on BLue issues. It only takes one person to do this. I am happy to be the one sitting back and giving commands, Im good at it, years of practice.:) But I am thrilled when someone else does it and everyone follows and we all play as a team and I get to shoot and kill lot of stuff and not die or have to hid behind things constantly.

Why are public games in ArmA II so terrible?

I would love to play on some locked down or orginaized pub servs but I dont have time to join a squad and build rank just to drive a Hummv. I just want to play with a nice group of orginaized players without alot of required training and "yes, sir's" to a kid who isnt old enough to drive. Every once in a while you get a good group of sod's who can mash it up. Another thing, the teamspeak for Veh and Helicopters rule is lame. You have soem moron on TS drive the MHQ right into the line of fire but if you jump in to repositio it safer you get "dont drive if your not on TS ..thats the rule ...no ifs or but's" So i undertand the need to keep order and noobs will destrot all you r helos if you let them...but Im a 38yo man who fly planes for living and I think I can decide when to take Action or stick to a lame rule......In otherwords the rules sometimes create the very situation that they are trying to prevent. And while Im on this rule........ This rule only works if you have an organized command.....I am tired of sitting around HQ waiting for tranport....looking at a row of helis......and a bunch of guys standing around it saying "dont fly if your not on TS" If there is no orginized transport by command than all bets are off. If you have a rule like this you need to be resposible for facilitating transport and if not let people use theyre own resources to get to the fight. Alot of times there are more guys standing at the MHQ then the AO because of this "nodrive TS" rule. Ive been on TS for hours flying and driving and never talked to anyone and this was ok ...so Im not sure what the point of the rule is......except to exclude no TS people. If noobs are a problem...lock em down so just command can use them or crew. And squad leaders...medics.....engineers.....do your jobs Squad leaders...slow down, stop running, you scatter your squad all over when you run everywhere.....and ...command your squad ...give them a cohesive vision and they will follow you. Medics....Medicate.....DOnt go off shooting in front of the battle...you should be healing not shooting.. Engineers.....same as above but fixing stuff instead of healing. And to server admins......I dont care what problems your having just dont make em mine. If you are admining 10 servers dont get irritated at me, not my issue. Im here to have fun in your game and if its not fun I wont come back and then eventually you have no players.. Harping on the rules through voice and message spams is also tiring. I stopped playing Americas Army due to lots of this. ARMA/OFP folk are definatly better team players. Thats my rant thanks to all that play well and use teamwork! Cheers

    This is worth checking out

i use it for arma and other sims. I also use it on my old slow laptop as it free's up memory. Its not malicious at all and has a defrag for individual programs. I seem to notice arma stuff, particularly the editor modified stuff need defrag now and then.

Heres a quick one I whipped up after reading your post. Nothing fancy but does have distance markers and goes just over 900 meters. Let me know what you think, if its cool I might clean it up and upload for general release. Sorry havent figured out how to make things multiplayer yet so this is single player only. You can switch units as well. Cheers http://www.filefront.com/14719681/Missions.zip

Awsome job Just finished, had to go back a few times on steam roller cuz I had a funky mod. Wasn't anything to do with your campaign though... IF you like I could send you a PM of any details I might have seen that could be diffrent or errors... It was alot of fun and you have to be carefull everywhere you go so that made it a nice challenge. Bardosy Please check out my mission pack on Armaholics and tell me what you think, I would could possibly convert them to a campaign but I am really thinking about doing a whole new campaign myself so it was really cool to play yours and see the cool way you did things. Let me know if you need any help with American (not English;) ) dialog for an update or something.

I absolutly agree with what your saying regarding Russia and renegades. I acctually found it wierd that OFP and ARMA were based on US and Russia, Wasent that all over in the 80's? But given the location of the game designers I can see the influence. The renegade general thing doesnt do it for me either to be honest and does kinda make me feel as though I am watching a 1985 B movie with Jean Claude Van Damm. At least in the movie Red Dawn the whole of USSR was invading the US and while not very likely was more plausible than a renegade general. A renegade Leader of a country who goes off the wagon is a better scenerio circa Iraq, Iran, N Korea, Bosnia etc...... But Renegade General is to easy of a plot.....Should be more intangled kinda like the campaign which had some twists.
  15. I wasent really asking for anything in the previous post. Just a slightly offtopic opinion on designing game atmosphere.. The police shoot out example was meant to point out that humans have involuntary responses to stress, and its a challenge to recreate those same feelings. But to be the devils advocate and argue the point about fight or flight and what not...... How do you know if you are injured in video game? In ARMA you fall down and squirm around. Is this a voluntary player controlled response. No its the effect of a game action that has been programmed by the designers to influence your gameplay. Not saying the game designer should make the players characture runaway but it has to somehow indicate to you the health and state of you unit. Either way, just my take. People like what they like and everyones opinion is valid. Play Hard Have FUN:)

    Nuke!

Much confusion and disinfomation here....I dont know if wide spread media is a good thing or a bad thing anymore.... Half of you believe the Japanese tried to surrender before the war and the other half believe after.. Whats funny is we havent heard from anyone who was alive during that period..they are less and less and probably are not gamers. I think the history channel is sorta accurate but being in the aviaton field of work I never see things on TV that reflect the true nature of the incident/story. US Coast Guard rescues I have been personally involved with are rarely broadcast with any accuracy what so ever.... Comparing Trumann to Hitler is ludacris....... Hitler attacked others and murdered inocent people for the cause of genocide. Pure Evil. In case you forget...The Japanese were also aligned with the Germans and Italians and all parties are responsible for the atraucities that happened during that war... You should do some research on what Japan did to China during that time and you will see that they had the same evil thought process that Hitler did, it just didnt make as many headlines. Dropping the bomb probably saved lives on both sides in the long run and also prevented several other wars due to the fear of nuclear conflict. But Im not support nukes however at the time humanity did what it thought was neccesary to bring order to the world structure.. You have to remeber. Only a handfull of individuals had any idea what a nuke could do and no one understood the long term effects....kind like when they used to say a cigerette a day was good for you. Well we know better now and hind sight is 20/20 but dont judge a man till you walk a mile in his shoes. We will never know what the alternate ending to the non-nuclear WWII would be but I think the AXIS powers probably killed more people in the death camps then the sum total of both bombs. The U.S. suffered 418,000 death from WWII Heres some disinformation from Wikipedia: Very interesting infact: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties So 2 bombs kill 220,000 but because of the Axis actions the world lost up to 78 million people! In case you didnt get that: 78,000,000 lives lost The tiny island of IWO JIMA caused the US 6,821 deaths and 19,217 injured. The Japanese lost 18,300 dead and 216 captured. Almost 50,000 dead and injured for a rock in the water the size of Utes. If the Allies had to invade Japan that number would have been millions. SO the bomb probably did save more lives than it took. And dont go on about the U.S. is this and that, because I believe there were 13 countries or so that were part of the Allies and the decision was not made by Truman or any one man. to break it down....If a policeman shots a person who is stabbing soemone are you trying to say that the Policeman and the Criminal are one in the same...they are similar in charature because they both cause violence. Oh and btw.... I am Swiss and American

  18. From some of the responses it seems that realism is only a good thing when it benefits you. I like these ideas of varying accuracy depending on the pulse and emotion of the shooter. It is what happens in real life. Just last night I was listening to a radio show that had many current and former police officers discussing things that happened in high intensity situations. One of the callers told a story where he and his rookie partner pulled over a car and the passengers opened up on them with Tech 9 and Uzi's. He dove back into the car for cover and after a few seconds of firefight the car speed away. So the guy looks over to see if his partner is ok and she is nowhere to be seen, so he's starting to freakout and radio'd that he couldnt find his partner. In the mean time the support vehicles were arriving and he was stunned to see his partner in on of the command vehicles...how did she get there???? Well....apprently....when the shooting started she got scared and ran...the command vehicle spotted her hiding behind a dumpster 2 blocks away........ Fight or Flight! Whether you like it or not in real life we sometimes do not have control over our faculties. The challenge is to do this on a 17in monitor while you are sitting in your robe with a cup of coffee in the security of your own home. But since we dont get a shock of pain when you get shot we have things like health meters and when you are dead the game tells you so. So....since they cannot literally harm you, you will never be affected physically. (ie: adreneline makes it hard to control the mouse...and I cant see the screen because ofthe sweat in my eyes) In the case of games you are playing a characture, someone else, your in thier shoes. Im pretty sure of this because I dont own an M16 but I can seem to shoot things just fine when I am in charature. So the blood, sweat and tears has to be generated artificially to make you feel as though you are scared and injured. You need these aural and visual cues because you cant feel bullets in your back. They are telling you that something is happening and how you choose to respond will decide whether you live or die. For example: If you play a game where you are invincible and can run around and shoot things with impunity (I think theres a new CM game but I cant remeber the title :) )after the initial thrill of watching things blow up you will probably be pretty bored running and gunning,(I assume this because we are in the ARMA forum and not COD) What keeps you going in ARMA is the frustration, suprise and difficulty in trying to outwit your enemy. There is also a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment to completing a difficult task against the odds and this equals FUN. There are very few games that scared me....Resident Evil was scary, BF Vietnam was scary when the vietcong AI stabbed you several times from the bush with a bayonet acctually the BF AI in general were kinda scary whether asian or european. But ARMA AI dont have that scare factor unless you get suprised by the guy around the doorway who kills you. ARMA AI are less cinema and more milsim. So to make you feel these feelings you have to create immersion and effects and lighting and dialouge so the User (you) can understand what the Characture is going through. I like this type of play and makes you feel more human and vulnerable, rather than a blob of pixels moving around other pixles shooting pixel bullets at pixel things. I mean really...were you ever scared playing PONG. Just my 2 cents....looking forward to the completed mod.

Aw yeah I totally get off on PAWN? Here we are back at the old moral debate: Is it ok to show gore and violence and censor nudity? Sounds like Grand Theft Auto meets Chenerus Life. And yes we have Hookers and Madame as stock objects so its not too off the mark. I agree and disagree. It does seem these days that conflicts are not a show of force (ie:US vs USSR) as they are more guerilla (IED, ambush, hit and run) But conflicts such as the first Afghan war and others are ways for the US and Russia to fight thru proxy countries and not get our hands dirty. There is rampent use of civilian contractors to perform the same operations but not have to pass it through congress or the US public, kinda of like the old CIA black ops except now we hire someone else to do the work and if it goes bad we punish the company (ie:Blackwater) as if we had nothing to do with it when the truth is, the only reason the contractors are there is because we hired them to be there. Just an opinion on current world affairs....but I digress. The thing that got me to respond was the remark about renegade generals. I agree that this is an outlandish premise that would be used in a hollywood movie to create a reason to have explosions and romance. But then....a quick scan of the daily news and you realize that maybe this is not as far fetched as it sounds but not very likely from a super power. Snippets from the last month of world news. SAN JOSE, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Honduran President Manuel Zelaya said on Sunday that he was kidnapped and flown to Costa Rica against his will and he did not sign a letter of resignation. "I was kidnapped with force, violence and brutality," he told media at a joint press conference with his Costa Rican counterpart Oscar Arias. He said that between eight and 10 hooded and heavily armed soldiers had entered his home and forced him to board a plane without telling him its destination. "I was in my pajamas and did not even have socks on," he said. "This kidnap is a blow to a nation and a slap in the face for the whole world," he added. Earlier on Sunday, Zelaya thanked Costa Rica for its hospitality and said he had been kidnapped and put on a plane to Costa Rica against his will. :butbut: The Honduran army seized President Manuel Zelaya on Sunday and sent him into exile. Hours later, the country's congress swore in Congressional President Roberto Micheletti to replace Zelaya. The now ex-president-in-exile says he is the victim of a brutal coup and calls the military action illegal. Zelaya was arrested in his presidential palace and flew to Costa Rica. Honduras' congress later revealed what it claimed was a letter of resignation from Zelaya and swore in Congressional President Roberto Micheletti as interim president. But Zelaya told CNN the resignation was "totally false" and he is still president. Zelaya supporters clashed with soldiers and blocked the street outside the gates of the palace, demanding the soldiers to send back their president. Zelaya arrived in Nicaragua from Costa Rica. Soldiers ousted the elected president of Honduras on Sunday and within hours, the Congress named a successor. The Honduran Congress voted to accept what it said was Zelaya's letter of resignation, with even his former allies turning against him. Congressional leader Roberto Micheletti was sworn in to serve until January 27 when Zelaya's term was scheduled to end. Micheletti belongs to Zelaya's Liberal Party, but opposed the president in the referendum. Roberto Micheletti said, "All I want to say to you is that this is a constitutional succession. I think that no one - including Barack Obama and much less Hugo Chavez - has the right to threaten this country." Outside of Congress, a group of about 150 people opposed to Zelaya's ouster stood well back from police lines. Micheletti declared a nationwide curfew from 9pm to 6am for two days starting Sunday night. He also told a news conference he had appointed a new foreign minister: lawyer and former Ambassador to the UN, Enrique Ortez Colindres. Zelaya was asleep when the sound of gunshots and shouting abruptly roused him from his bed before dawn on Sunday. Armed troops wearing helmets and face masks dragged him out of his presidential residence. An air force plane flew Zelaya to Costa Rica as armored military vehicles with machine guns rolled through the streets of the Honduran capital and soldiers seized the national palace. The Supreme Court backed the military takeover and said it was in defense of democracy. ---------- Post added at 02:00 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:00 AM ---------- Oh and..... Sorry to be sort of off topic: I love the campaign and am in the middle of it. Very tough, you must move slow and the constant threat makes vehicles almost a hassle. Its much better to patrol on foot because they like to blow up truck and suprise you. Question: How do you make the towns secure once youve overrun them. I seem to have killed all the AI and got the info from the Political House but I am not sure that I have succesfully takin the cities as it dosent turn green in the task menus..Great campaign...Yes you couls tweak the dialouge and if you were to add voice acting and a few cutscenes it would be a very professional and polished campaign. If you are ever looking for beta testers or need help with dialouge I am happy to assist..Either way, awsome job and I am having alot of fun with it.
  21. Hey all I released a set of 7 missions I have been working on. These mission were a learning process on how to use the editor. Thanks to all who have uploaded scripts and gave assistance to me through the forums. Feed back appreciated. Download is availible at ARMAholics: http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=7613 Tractor's Arma Mission Pack by Tractorking Description: Included are a series of basic missions for the common foot soldier. I designed these scenarios based on real world events. The missions range from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Some are pretty straight forward scenerios that lead you from waypoint to waypoint while others are more open ended and offer the option to extend the mission. Content: -TA-Rickshaw You are to ride along in a convoy of two supply vehicles and deliver them to the ship yard depot. The route has been reported to have heavy insurgent activity including ambushes and IED attacks. -TA-Hinkley Radicals have kidnapped local political leaders and are holding them at the airport and demanding a pilot to fly a helicopter to safety. Your team will attack from the main south entrance while a sniper squad attacks from the north side of the airfield. Eliminate the hostiles and secure the hostages for transport. -TA-Idrang Your unit along with two other squads are being helicoptered to a forward base. Intelligence has received information of a large attack force attempting to over run the base at dawn. Defend the base from the initial attack and clear the area. -TA-Lionel Insurgents have moved into the train depot overnight and have interrupted UN supplies for the civilians of Chenerus. Meet up with the local militia and proceed into town to clear the depot. You have support available using radio callsign INDIA. (You have the option to play as leader, you start as a follower but you can switch units through the map menu. You must be the leader to call in support.) -TA-Wedge Your unit is to support an armored squad to prevent to enemy armored units from linking up. The ;arger force will be approaching from the north east while the smaller unit from the west. Let the armored units handle the initial volley's and then proceed into town and clear any left over infantry. You have the option to use the HIGH COMMAND if you like. -TA-Anvil You are a Forward Air Controller tasked with destroying two targets. Link up with the medical support squad to obtain your laser designator then proceed to the village to locate and destroy a suspected weapons cache. Proceed to the primary objective, a forward operating base supplying movement intel to the enemy. Once you have located the base call in an artillery airstrike using the SECOP support. (activate in US Support Menu 'SOM support') Your second objective is a radar tower in Devils Castle. Locate and call in artillery /airstrike and destroy the radar site. Once completed you can end the mission by returning to HQ or assist SECOP as needed. -TA-TinyTim You are a Russian spetsnaz squad. The CDF have taken Russian civilians hostage and moved them to a prison camp. Liberate the prisoners and get to the lighthouse. -TA-Mousetrap You are in the local underground militia. A double agent is picking up his mistress for a night out. You are to intercept the vehicle and eliminate the occupants. Destroy all evidence and hurry to the get away car and escape. You have no night vision but should be able to see with the full moon. Installation: Extract the .pbo file(s) to your ArmA2\Missions folder. Known issues: Unfortunately my briefings don't always load properly on my system. Most of the missions have briefings included but you may notice a discrepancy here and there and the mission Anvil has no briefing as it conflicted with the USSupport scripts. Please use the descriptions below as a basic briefing. Markers are included in mission to guide you.

You have to respond to the secops request. Once they ask if you are availible go to the communications menu and accept the mission. If you dont respond they reassign them. I have accepted missions from SECOPs and took too long to get there and they reassigned them. The tank volley was sort of the whole point of Anvil. I just wanted to see some long distance, desert style tank action. You can use the High Command to control them if you like and I belive I also made the Tank Commander playable. ---------- Post added at 10:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 PM ---------- Updated. I think for the next big mission/campaign build I will have a primary central base similar to Lionel(or manhatten campaign base) I didnt mention it in the briefing but in the Idrang mission there is a weapons cache located in one of the tents. I ussually grab an rpg from there. I will try to move it or include in the briefing. As far as the departure to Idrang. Due to the horrible AI convoy/formation flying I had to make them fly out in individual waypoints. If I make the bording and takeoff timing closer together sometimes the 2nd chopper takeoff first and collides with the first one. Also, if you board the helo too quickly you will lift off early and crash into both helos taking out the whole group. I wouldve loved to make the Idrang mission even bigger (more AI) but my PC is pretty low end. I originally started with 6 helos full of guys and narrowed it down to 3 for the most reliable insert actions by the AI. Lionel had the most immersive starting point and I tried to make each insert diffrent(helo-parachute-boat). Anvil had the best overall combination and was the closest to the ARMA2 stock missions. I love the explosion in the short, Rickshaw. This is awsome with the JTF fire and smoke addon. Love the feedback....
