Scissor jump? I kinda see it as a crotch step, makes me cringe at the notion of performing it over a splintery old fence :D
-
Very insightful there Lauri. But I would really like a side by side comparison of the T-90 vs the latest Abrams tank. T-90 is a pretty recent development in this post-cold war era, wonder how anyone can know of its capabilities. Would be greatful if someone could dig up some good info/resources.

Well the thing is I'm just not seeing how jumping (at rational distances even for lightly loaded soldiers) would serve any purpose other than to encourage jackassery in multiplayer modes. I cannot recall of any building layouts where jumping from one rooftop to another is feasible without MAXIMUM STRENGTH. Sure there are plenty of opportunities in the industrial areas to fall from a rooftop to a lower rooftop or pipes or whatever(and subsequently break your legs), you dont need a jump button for that, you just run off the edge. Any other reasonable obstacle can be walked over or "crotch stepped over". Oh, just thought of something, you could jump onto the hood of a car or humvee and thus increase the passenger capacity by two. Yes that would surely legitimize the notion of ARMA 2 as a realistic game, seeing a hummer drive by at 50 mph with two people standing on the hood. Seriously though, maybe the evasive dive to prone or baseball slide to cover. Hell maybe climbing walls and fences too tall to step over (though really do we want BIS to add features when some existing features are still broken). But jumping? Why? Jumping is the bane of online play and just looks stupid. Why did Left4Dead have soo many exploits that have just been ironed out in the past couple of months? A very liberal application of jumping. Whats a common complaint (and a real suspension of any feeling of realism) in all military-themed shooters? Jackalobs jumping around in close quarters. I'm just not seeing where jumping has any merit for ARMA 2, if you want to ride a cow, they could make that a selection on the middle mouse button action menu. You can already fall to a lower rooftop and break your legs, you dont have to add a button for that.

Sound engine (sound physics)
JackandBlood replied to #1Consumer's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Don't bullets make a really cool supersonic hiss when they pass close. Awesome snapping and the sound of dirt kicking up, kinda serves like a regenerative health system, you know you gotta kill something fast or find some cover when you start hearing that. I dont think any game does that (because you would have to model individual bullets as objects for that to work wouldnt you?). I love it. Still get the weird static and changes in volume in large firefights tho. -
oh roger that, ID Software pioneered that tech in netQuake didnt they? That was a ways back.

How to fix Arma 2 in 11 easy steps...
JackandBlood replied to Redfist's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
Er dude, very few things on that list are "easy". Just the improving the AI given the scope and depth of the game is a daunting prospect. Voice work, well thats money money, so spread the word, get ppl to buy. Maybe BIS will convert good sales to better voices in patches, maybe they'll use it to take a week vacation :D. -
I think it would be really neat if the player smoothing you're referring to(i never heard that term before but I think I get the gist of it) depended on the length and heft of the weapon you're using. Weapon handability(not a real word) for CQB vs open spaces is a consideration I feel is sorely neglected in military shooters. I mean IRL its a HUGE consideration, (do i take the m4 or take the 16, design in bullpup or conventional layout, the whole notion of PDWs, etc). I dont think such a thing has been implemented in a shooter before. The notion is basically like this: moving through interior space wielding a DMR would be kind of clumsy like it is now, but switching to pistol raises the player smoothness value, or if you going to be doing alot of CQB work you loadout with a carbine or SMG and get a smoothness advantage in interior spaces. Would add depth and a new dimension to determining loadouts. And further render BIS the genre king :moto:

At the risk of being banned for an inappropriate threads. I propose a toast. To SFOD-D (Delta), Marine Force Recon, SEAL Team 6. Even though they don't exist. Further Toasts: All our people fighting to rid the world of extremism and terrorism :All branches of the US, UK, German, Austrailian, EU personnel. Special shout outs to: 101st and 82nd Airborne, 101st Rakkassan Battlion, 10th Mountain, the brave civilians in Iran whom contested an obviously rigged election under plenty of imprisonment and violence, British SAS, Austrailian SAS, German units(I dont know their designation). Add more if you know of them. Ya I'm a bit drunk. So what. Like Harvest Red, this never happened. ---------- Post added at 02:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:03 AM ---------- Cant believe I left out the Rangers. SOAR. Grey Fox. Cheers Heros

They will inevitably lag behind you, maybe so much as 300m, putting you in mortal harm. Set them to Safe mode (yes it sounds silly). They will still engage and be an effective unit, and they will move at your pace. You can then set their stance to whatever (of course in prone mode they will be slow). In any other mode than safe they tend to lag behind and you may find yourself alone in the woods. Safe mode + go crouch is a good balance of stealth, awareness, and marksmenship. Yes its counter-intuitive to set your men to safe in a combat zone but it does actually work quite well.
-
Ah its nothing dude, im just being drunk and belligerent. Fact is im not too sure what we're arguing about:D. I still do believe an equivalent Abrams HC will defeat a T-90 but I dunno if the TC was even arguing that point!
-
Woops I was off by a year. Latch onto that, by all means, it illustrates your point.
-
I hear say the Grease gun (0.45) was made in numbers. Lets use them tactically, and defeat T-72s and IFVs.
-
Probably could of. Not sure what 1992 Iraq was using, but the munitions didnt do much. Now, a matter of engineering... was the DU armor at all moved along the stress-strain curve by the Iraqi rounds? Thats probably something we'll never know (until they declassify it). I'm going to take an edjucated guess and say there was no change in elasticity at all in DU armor and thusly the tank could have taken many more shots. Yep, i do believe an Abrams heavy commons could have taken on quite a few (>10) Iraqi T-72s. Oh ya this was about tactics. Of course there was no tactical consideration in using extensive technology (superior airpower, superior armor, stealth tech, guided munitions, fuck i could go on, but I'd consider it a mercy if you didnt make me) to win the war, exacting a clear defeat for Saddam and with the most minimal of casualties on our side. No that was all tactics, hell we could'va done it with tactics and Sherman MBTs and bolt action rifles. We are just that good tactically...Yes?

Dogz, tell me about your Aussie mates if you care too. I like stories, especially about infantry. Hope they're doing well and kicking ass. ---------- Post added at 03:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:51 AM ---------- There's an off-topic forum? I swear I woulda put it there if I knew of one. Rubbish? A game that makes light infantry seem more real to me than anything i've (and many others) ever experienced. Im just a gamer that realized the extent of the drama that happens when a soldier under my command gets hit, I send a corpman to patch him up, the corpman is likewise hit and dies doing his duty. I have to leave them, take the threat out. They maybe AI, but they mean something to me. Imagine an actual squad leader, his men, their lives depend on his decisions. Wow fuck if the Finlandia isn't hitting. But Rubbish? I suppose when you can respawn my sentiments mean little. Shame.
-
fair enough, a few shots of Finlandia and I get a bit sentimental. You're obviously a tough guy so you'll get your space. Course you came to mine, cant do anything about that bro.

Evidense of Console version of ArmA II?
JackandBlood replied to walker's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
hey i've been saying, the ARMA 2 works quite nicely in infantry mode in 3rd person while #1 didnt... Complex up the terrain and geometry a bit more, add more fog (of war...) and you're got engagements less than 300m, doable with a gamepad and some autoaim (though i proposed a much more complex system, unlikely to be implemented http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?p=1386934#post1386934 ). And that a 7.62 NATO feels just a tad bit more kick than a 5.56 NATO? Hell I love the game. But cant shake the feeling that we PC gamer's (though still valued by BIS, i have no disillusions about that) are paving the way for a more profitable console version. -
Did you know you can talk to your team mates?
JackandBlood replied to BeerHunter's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
"Yes, i saw a western sniper and a western car" Private, you referring to me standing right next to you and my fucking humvee sitting 10 meters from us. SLAP. -
Why dont you use the ingame voice chat ?
JackandBlood replied to The_Angry_Canadian's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Cuz I play single player exclusively, and Robo, Scarlet (gay nickname wtf), and the DMR guy dont really give a shit whatever I say vocally. Course I fear MP cuz I fear douches seeing my ghillie suit in bright pink, this isn't exactly VAC 2 we're talking here. -
well sure we all knew when we signed on (eg purchased) ARMA 2 we were going to have a bit of a sit before it reaches its zenith. But hey i'm loving, the armory stuff (try mountain bike manuever course). All this raw stuff, feels like GTA 4 but in the beauty of nature, and helluva better combat.

Ummmhmm. That's how famously that Abrams heavy commons got himself into the path of 3 T-72s. And it was a tactical ...decision to let the tank get into a position in solo contact with 3 enemy MBT, hit once by all 3 t-72s. And it was not the technological advantage of DU armor among other Abrams tank advantages that allowed the tank to survive; then destroy all 3 T-72s... I can smell a kneebiter (or asskisser) a mile away. Maybe you should re-evaluate your position. Perhaps BIS simply isn't allowed the access to classified details of each recent MBT's capabilities and has to make concessions hmmm? Course in your defense (cuz i'm not here to ridicule your ideas completely just to tone down this popular but ludicris thread), Afganistan has shown. On foot intelligence gathering in this particular state is far superior to UAVs and satelite photos.
-
Damn straight. Someone famous said something to the ends of like "My favorite weapon is the one I got ammo for". That said the DMR feels an awful bit like any of the 5.56 NATO guns, and has the stopping power to boot.

Dave Chapelle has forever ruined skeet shooting

that is all. -
I kinda of feel like ARMA 2 PC was already vetted (HOT NEW TERM FROM ELECTION!) for consoles. Examples: 1. 3rd person works very well(much better than ARMA 1 which i played exclusively in 1st person when infantry) 2. Complex terrain and level layout seems to cater to sub 300 m engagements (more gamepad friendly), 3. Less recoil overall. (7.62 NATO feels easier than ARMA 1's 5.56 NATO) Just musings..
