  1. Got MOST settings on highest/Ultra and the game looks stunning in my opinion. During mid-day when the sun is brightest the vegetation looks great. Character models look nice too. I am pretty sure it looks much better than Arma 2.

Also, in terms of performance, this Alpha runs smoother for me than Arma 2 did at release. Again, it's alpha and feedback is welcome, but to judge the game so early is silly.

  2. ^^ LOL

Like to add my congrats to the thread, i've played 6 hours thus far and i was seriously expecting a much more crashy/buggy game with it being Alpha. I have everything set to ultra except for shadows PIP&PP, the game looks stunning during the bright day, the trees, grass the characters look great.

The game is smooth i get around 30-45 fps with FRAPS on and anything from 40-60 without recording, it can dip below 30 when in dense lush woods or towns packed with a.i. Very impressed so far and cannot wait as more features and content are added. The final product will be a game we will all play for years. Well done BI.

  3. Had a lot of fun so far, was spoiled a bit by a few idiots online, but the admins finally took care of them allowing for a very enjoyable couple hours online.

I noticed that when viewing drivers from 3rd person they all have the dead animation whilst driving, not sure if that was just me or if everyone was seeing this.

Graphics look great, details of the characters and the landscape looks very nice. Sounds effects are okay, but i'm pretty sure i'll be checking all sound mods out again once created.

Missing my tank action though, looking forward to the addition of tanks very much.

  4. yeah because you agree when steam dies, all your game dies.

Actually Steam has said that in the case of this ever happening (very unlikely) they would release a patch removing the requirement for Steam. You can find many discussions on this with a simple Google search.

But lets be realistic, Steam isn't going bust when it controls the majority of the PC market. In fact UK game retailers have even said in the past that Steam's dominance is killing competition. Steam is dominating for a reason, they quite simply offer fantastic deals during their sales and bring together many PC gamers as well as putting all of our games in one simple place. Despite all the Steam hate on this site, the majority of PC gamers that i know my self included consider Steam a blessing for PC gaming. Where i live shops such as GAME used to have an entire section dedicated to PC games, yet in the last 7 years they have a tiny little corner with about 15 games while the rest of the shop is full of Console games. Yet they wonder why PC gamers are turning to Steam? :j:

  5. A couple of these I asked on another Steam related thread, but I may get a little more idea from this thread too.

1/ I buy the disc version (I like hard copy rather than digital download). The key that comes with the disc, will the disc take me directly to Steam, if I am internet connected, as I believe its going to be a Steam activated key, or will the key be in the box (so as to speak, old way) and simply do it as usual ?

You install the game as normal, pop the Disc in, this will prompt you to download and install Steam, once that is done the game will install as normal. You'll have a leaflet with the box which will contain the key, you will be asked by steam to enter the key during or before instillation.

2/ I have the game loaded and ready, once that happens and I want to look around the game, I assume I can be off line in SP, will Steam run anywhere in the background, or will the game run o.k. with Steam turned off in SP. If Steam has to run for some reason in the background in SP, what, if any, is the likely performance hit ?

Steam is always running, whether you are playing in online or offline mode, the Steam app it's self will be running on your computer. I have been using it since 2005, i have never noticed any performance issues when using Steam.

3/ Further down the line some mod/addons are made for A3, I would want to download some interesting ones. I download these from the Steam Workshop area, are these then kept in a Steam library on my pc, or can they be moved over or a separate back up copy of the mod/addon stored on a separate HDD drive ?

When you find a mod you like from the Steam Workshop, you hit a subscribe button, this then downloads and installs the mod for you, if you load up steam on another computer and install Arma 3 on that machine via Steam, it will automatically download the mods you subbed to. (I use this for both Civ 5 and Skyrim, works brilliantly) The mods are downloaded into a mod folder inside the game's main folder on your machine

4/ MP, I join in a group that has been formed, does the server have to be Steam run, or can any server be used. I assume here that Steam will be running in the background, how much of a hit to performance will this be, or is there virtually no performance loss ?

I can't answer this 100% as i don't really know, but i own games on Steam such as Warband that clans have their own dedicated servers. Yes Steam has to be running, and no, i do not notice any performance issues at all.

5/ Is Steam subscription based or free to use for everything A3 based, i.e. the game (once purchased) and the mod/addons ?

Steam it's self is free, you will buy Arma 3 only, there are no monthly fees using Steam. All user created content via the Steam workshop is free.

Thanks, sorry for being a ‘noob’ at Steam, but really I haven’t dealt with Steam at all in the past.

No problem, i had very similar questions back in 2005, and i was quite negative towards having to use Steam. Since then i personally think it is one of the best things to happen to PC gaming.

  6. In my opinion, Steam is one of the best things that has happened to PC gaming, I've been using it since 2005, i remeber the first retail game i bought that required me to use Steam, i was annoyed that i had to download a program and run it just to play a game.

After a couple of months it soon changed my opinion, never having to search the net for updates, having all of my friends and games in one place and being able to chat with them through steam even if we were playing different games.

I would love Steam integration, make it optional for the paranoid, but if i am to buy a retail version allow me to enter my code into Steam so that i can link it to my Steam account. This would be great for me as i still love to buy the hard copy of these games as well as use Steam.

  7. Copy/paste everything, Im talking about the playable/no playable status

is not funny when you have to make a 40+ people coop mission ¬¬

This as well for me... i love to make huge co-op missions with plenty of playable options and the finger ache after 50+ units just becomes unbearable. :D

  8. I make a lot of missions with friends that involve special forces using choppers, planes being dropped behind enemy lines etc.. The big maps make these missions limitless so i would have to disagree.

In Arma, size really does matter and i would say bigger is most definitely better. :)

  9. One of the most important things to me besides gameplay is sound effects. Graphics i care little for as long as the game is great but sound effects are very important for me and i always use sound mods in most games. I hope arma3 will improve on the sounds a bit if not i'm sure somebody from the community will take care of it. :D
