  1. "that binds with the xvid codec from the game". Woah, hold on there buddy - codec? game? A game does not use a codec to display video information. CoDec stands for CompressionDecompression - A codec specifies a compression method. What goes on on the screen is uncompressed. A game cannot use a codec to display video - it could take a video encoded with a codec (such as xvid), decompress it and display the frames (ie a video cutscene) but it cannot output to the screen using a codec. When you run software such as FRAPS, it grabs the raw data from the framebuffer (memory) and runs it through a codec to generate a compressed file. There would be no reason to have settings such as this in a config file unless the game feature(s/d) video capture. It is quite possible that it is just something they had for development (To record testing runs) but removed for release. Removal could be due to licensing issues.
  2. Yeah I am getting much better speeds from the CA one, despite being in the UK. Also, if you change download location, it seems to restart the download. Gotta do better.
  3. Yes but my point is that all these aircraft are only VTOL for landing and takeoff - fuel requirements for a hover preclude using it at other times. In fact, the new F-35 (The STOVL 'B' variant) has 23% less fuel capacity than the conventional F-35A, further compounding the issue. Also, as you pointed out, the F-35B is not even a VTOL, it is STOVL. The british Harrier is pretty much the only true VTOL jet in service, and it is not supersonic. So here we are talking about a VTOL aircraft that is in VTOL mode 100% of the time, and can even VTOL itself and another vehicle. Of course, this is all real world contemporary, whereas we are talking about a futuristic fantasy setting - but carrying these facts of life over to a game lend depth and credibility - there is "game" in these limitations. As it stands, planning a drop of a walrus holds little or no consequences in terms of fuel consumption - you could easily drop off a walrus then proceed on to a more conventional mission afterwards. The changes I am proposing would force you to plan around these issues more - a manta would probably need to refuel straight after dropping off a walrus, so you need to plan ahead accordingly.
  4. Maybe if and when they sort the controls out, I may agree. But in the current state, I cannot fly with a mouse - as you either have to put up with non-inverted y for flight, or inverted y for tanks (Plus the mouse acceleration makes me sick) and flying with a proper stick is not possible (Cannot remap). I love playing the game with an XBOX controller (I am a hardcore mouse and key purist, so that is a surprise!) but this BS where you have to hold the left trigger to make the left stick control alt is just driving me nuts.
  5. Air to Air combat just plain sucks - there's no dogfighting, just sitting in position strafing and taking pot-shots. Air-to-ground is worse - the concept of having bombs on something which is essentially a helicopter is just plain silly - bombing runs should be all about timing the speed and lob of the bomb drop.
  6. Reproduced from http://www.carriercommand.com/feedback/view.php?id=409 Whilst I applaud the idea of hooks etc, I feel that the manta is just plain wrong. The VTOL capabilities of the manta should be similar to contemporary VTOL jets - VTOL is only used when absolutely needed and chews through fuel at an alarming rate. I am not sure if it already does, but flying with a hooked walrus should also cause extra drag and therefore more fuel use. Thus a manta required to airlift a walrus would probably need an extra fuel tank (an item similar to an ammo box) in order to have enough fuel to be able to VTOL take off from the carrier, VTOL pick up the walrus, fly with the walrus hooked, VTOL drop the walrus, fly back to base and VTOL land at the carrier. Maybe mantas should be allowed to take off with a walrus already hooked - such a mission could maybe be just about doable without extra fuel as you are doing one less VTOL maneuver. This would also aid in control simplification. Most sticks will only have 4 axis analogue control, which does not leave enough axes for VTOL height control. For example when using an XBOX controller, you need to hold left trigger to make the left stick change from speed to alt, but it is not much use when you need it in a hurry. Surely the solution is that VTOL is a separate mode - you normally fly like a jet (As in the original), then slow down - as you slow to below a speed threshold, an indicator lights up indicating VTOL mode is available. When you click a button, VTOL mode is engaged and controls change from jet style to helicopter style (speed control becomes alt, yaw remains same, pitch now controls forward/back motion, roll now controls left/right slip). You pick up your load, gain a little forwards momentum in VTOL mode, and as you go back above the transition threshold, the VTOL light indicates that sufficient lift is available for normal flight - you hit the button and transition back to jet mode.
  7. Hmm, your TS server appears down tonight...
  8. Cheers walker, the Google DNS let me see the manual at least. I can't see the rest of your domain though. I set up TS and configured the Zeus server. I also used YAS to update from the kelly's heroes server and managed to successfully join it once. However it was then back to my original issue of "No messages received for 10 secs" messages and orange / red link symbols. I tried joining it again, and couldn't even get in-game, it just sat at "Receiving..." once the sound effects kicked in at the point you pick squad. Oh well, I will probably be about tonight and jump on TS to see if I can get this sorted. Thanks once again.
  9. Well my my, it seems I have started quite the conversation here... For the record, I would consider myself a pretty hardcore PvPer. I prefer reality over run-n-gun. Previously my fave FPS was BF2 Project Reality mod. I am looking to play A2 instead as I have TrackIR and want to use that because, well, you know if you have one ;) Games that don't support it = FAIL. I don't see why A2 would not be good for PvP - it is what you make it. BF2 was not hugely my thing, but PR was a different story simply through modding. With A2 having native support for base building and such, the start point already sounds better than PR ever was. Besides, can't A2 handle hundreds of AIs scattered across the map vs a few players? That would be an acceptable alternative to PvP for me. I kind of like L4D, so I guess that could grow on me if PvP doesn't pan out. Tried that each time. I could get into servers pre 1.05, even if they were running domination, but still suffered from desynch. With 1.05, I get this new "Deleted content" message with modded servers (Which is a step in the right direction I suppose). With all versions to date, if it was a modded server, my client would start downloading, tick along smoothly, then freeze around 300 or 700K. Problem is I like the sound of ACE, its the main mod I want to try. Always had a legit copy, always been properly installed with right key. Nice one, I had a quick look whilst in a lecture today and it seemed like more what I was looking for. Unfortunately, my home ISP has not got the DNS update yet, so I will have to look tomorrow as all of the zeus-community.net domain seems down for me. I noticed the poster, Terox is Zeus too and in the UK like me, so I guess you have euro players? If so then if I can get this thing working it would be nice to have a frag with ya. Cheers for all the input peeps, hope to see you on the battlefield soon.
  10. SIX seems to work insofar as it downloads data. I set it to all of the "configs" and hit execute and it downloaded about 2GB of data. However, still no dice when trying to join servers, same message and I cannot work out what I am missing. Yuma's app seems to be nonfunctional. I worked out that if you added a server as a favorite, you could go into a mods tab and click a button that seemed to indicate that it would download the mods that server was using, but it resulted in a "Could not connect to server" error no matter which server I tried. I have seen mod lists, but to be honest they are often of little use as the error message or server description is often so cryptic and acronym ridden that an outsider has no chance of working out what is going on. It staggers me that there is any community for this game at all if the barrier to entry is so high. I am a geek with years of experience with this kind of thing, your average layman must have no chance.
  11. I bought Arma2 pretty much when it came out. In early versions, when I connected to an MP server, I would get the disconnecting chain and desync messages. I tried all versions up to 1.04 as they came out, same issue. So the game got shelved. I was bored again, and noticed a new patch (1.05) was out, so I decided to try again. I am currently unable to even find a server I can connect to. Every server seems to be running mods, and I get an error like "This mission depends on downloadable content that has been deleted". I found the SIX updater for ACE and a program called Yoma Addon Synchroniser, but did not have any luck with those. Any ideas?
  12. Am in the UK, cannot do this without a DSL modem in my PC. We use PPPoA here, not PPPoE.
  13. Hmm, we are maybe talking at cross terms here... Surely, when using private IPs NATed behind one public IP, if you set DMZ on the router, you forward all incoming ports to the router's IP to one of the internal private IPs. How is that different to forwarding the ports or using static NAT? Many. But mainly the [RIP] one running Domination. The server is often full of people playing, so I guess it is just something it doesn't like about my router or connection.
  14. I am at my wits end here. I really want to like this game, I really do, it has such great potential. But I just can't play multiplayer. When connecting to a server, it's fine when I choose squad etc, it downloads the mission file if it needs it (Albeit in pauses) but once you click OK it all goes wrong. After a brief downloading static image, I get a "Receiving..." overlay pop up. Then I start to get the chains. Yellow and red, broken or not broken. Sometimes I get in. It can take literally 3 minutes to get in-game and playing. But then, usually I get high desync / low bandwidth figures and chains. Even if my desync is OK I normally see players pinging around all over the place. This has happened all versions, I have not been able to play properly since launch. I have had some occaisional success with setting my router (A draytek vigor 2800) to "DMZ Host" - thereby forwarding all traffic to my PC. Though obviously as I am posting this it doesn't seem to cure it 100%. Sometimes it seems to make no difference at all. I have another PC here as well and have tried that, same deal - so I doubt it is the PC. It could be my connection I suppose, but I doubt it - I can download at 6meg fine and I get sub 20ms pings to servers. I am not using wifi, it's all wired. Many other games are fine. Since 1.03, I have had many CTDs once I am in so this has made testing even harder. If I had to make a guess, I would say there is still an issue with NAT. I have sunk many hours into trying to play this game so far, and I am about ready to quit. Are many other people getting stuff like this?
  15. I never use WiFi, my whole house is wired. Nothing else downloading. The bandwidth figure is nothing like my available bandwidth, I can have 6meg available but the bandwidth figure never goes past 100.
