Takeoff trim suicide skid flip
TAW_RiEvEr replied to coolts's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - GENERAL
I don't trim for take-off and only had this 'flipping' problem when my joystick was not being read correctly. I chose a different joystick profile (think I went with the Cyborg) and suddenly the control was perfect. The actual drivers for my own joystick 'break' FSX for some reason so I can't use them :) -
Question About Resolution and FSAA
TAW_RiEvEr replied to Xptical's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - GENERAL
AA = Anti-Aliasing It smooths out 'jaggy' edges on the in-game models. -
I believe you are wrong - I have been informed that if you press ScrollLock+X in game (with XFire running in background) that there is an option to start an FPS meter. QUOTE: If you've got the latest version there is now a taskbar type interface and it has an edit interface mode near the bottom left. I find the new default fps counter and clock to be too big by default but you can resize them I don't normally run XFire (I use Raptr) but I'll go install it now to check. EDIT: Okay - seems like XFire support is not working in ArmA2 and ToH, but it runs fine in other games (LotRO for example, FPS meter works there). If XFire and BI ever manage to support eachother, then it'll be useful but currently no good.

I had a similar issue with my Speedlink Black Widow USB flightstick. The standard windows drivers have it recognised as a 'standard usb joystick' or something like that. Unfortunately, the official drivers for it make FSX unplayable for some reason (constant vibration that can't be turned off and low frame rate) so I can't keep them installed. The fix I found for ToH was to configure the stick in-game as a Saitek Cyborg, now works perfectly with no 'flipping' on take-off. Don't know if this is relevant to your exact issue, but thought I'd mention it.

I believe XFire also has a built in dynamic framerate display, don't know about other gaming clients.

I agree, wipe out the deadzones! (Great video btw MD!) ;)

I have had stutters in games before and almost every time the problem has been solved by installing the very latest drivers for my video card (one time it turned out to be something to do with my wireless mouse/kb combo as it stopped once I removed them!). There was one other case (I believe it was ArmA2 ages ago) where I had to roll back two versions of the video drivers to stop stuttering, but once they patched it I was able to go back to the newest drivers again. I knew it was some sort of game/driver issue in every case as, once in LotRO for example, I was getting 106fps and it was still unplayable owing to stutter :D

I could never find an auto-hover in FSX and it STILL takes me ages to land there! I love auto-hover :D

This is what happens when your Gfx card doesn't meet requirements.
TAW_RiEvEr replied to nightsta1ker's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - GENERAL
I would give the guy a break, simply because most real human beings are incapable of telling how powerful a graphics card is any more as all the manufacturers basically re-badged their crappy old cards for DX11 without saying "Hey, this is an old 7600 with a new number." If we really want to help those less techy users out, someone needs to add the minimum and recommended card numbers from the NEW numbering systems. Honestly guys, I see this all the time. Most end-users think stuff like "My NVidia card is way newer than an old 8800GT, it'll work really well" Perhaps someone could do a link to a chart showing the lack of performance of some of these 'new' cards, particularly the 'S' versions! :) EDIT: took so long over replying that Froggy linked one - great chart, now get someone to add that chart link to the system specs post/page and maybe some newer users will buy the right cards ;) EDIT2: noticed that chart is already linked in the official 'Video Settings' thread, right at the bottom http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=126178 -

Just how hard is this to fly? - thinking of buying it.
TAW_RiEvEr replied to TAW_RiEvEr's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - GENERAL
I, for one, totally appreciate the inclusion of AutoHover in the game/sim :) It got me out of the poop a few times in the beta - great feature. I am finding it to be a very useful 'crutch' as I learn to fly choppers after years of fixed wing experience. When I realise that I have fouled things up badly and the chopper's attitude is about to spin out of control, being able to tap that spacebar and sit back to figure out what I did wrong is terrific! Looking forward to live launch tomorrow. -

BUT I tried the R44(?) chopper in FSX and just crashed it again and again in the tutorial, it seemed too twitchy and the throttle didn't work right. I'd love to learn to fly a chopper but if that first tutorial in FSX is representative of this game too, I won't bother :D I already have ArmA2 and expansions, so realise BI normally do a good job of things, but like I said - if it really is that hard to make a helicopter fly where you want it to, I will give it a miss. Game looks brilliant, but dead weight on my HD wouldn't impress me. :) NoCents is the chopper king at TAW so I've never needed to be able to fly one, just target the weapons -
Central European Summer Time maybe? :D

Mine is pre-loading right now off Steam, expect I'll have to wait until tomorrow afternoon for them to unlock it for play though :)

How to take screenshots?
TAW_RiEvEr replied to xman1's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - PRE ORDER BETA
Steam's built in screenshot facility seems to work, took one by accident yesterday when poking the F keys to see if I could make the game do anything unusual. -
Can I bind keys to my x-box controller
TAW_RiEvEr replied to lucasdigital's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - PRE ORDER BETA
I found the same problem when I attempted to play using my Xbox Controller. There seemed to be no way to get the Collective onto the controller and I had to use the keyboard for that function. If someone does know how to operate it from the controller, hopefully they will post. (I just switched to my flightstick, but the controller would be more convenient for casual play in the sitting room ;) ) -
The Art of Warfare [TAW] EU/USA
TAW_RiEvEr replied to Jyden's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SQUADS AND FANPAGES
Our AM division (ArmA games) has started a Mission making team (We held a team Spin Up meeting on SUNDAY OCTOBER 16th). We have about ten members for that right now, but more are welcome! We still have over 100 members playing ArmA:CO regularly. Looking for more people interested in helping to create missions and then playing them with our teams in mainly US and EU timezones. Our website has undergone a major change/upgrade so don't worry about asking for help on our forum if you get confused - I am permanently... *chuckles* -
Fligtstick recommendations....
TAW_RiEvEr replied to Tacklebait's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - PRE ORDER BETA
You could use a Saitek Throttle Quadrant along with just about any stick and pedals. I know it won't feel exactly the same as a Collective, but it will give the same control by using two of the levers in your left hand. :) -

TAW_RiEvEr replied to TAW_RiEvEr's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - GENERAL
Well, just did the first tutorial after figuring out how to set my controller up properly and it's harder than flying a plane. I can land a Cessna almost anywhere - crashed on landing with this chopper though and got it down on the retry. I found it very tricky getting it over the top of the Helipad for the landing. I am struggling to get my head round how I make it stop going forward where I need it to be. Pull back on the cyclic and I start going backwards - hehe. I'll get to grips with it. I remember struggling this much learning to land small planes, and even more so on the virtual flights with IL-2 (Thanks, Joint Ops Flight School for sorting me out!) and similarly on Rise of Flight. I find virtual flying and driving much harder than the real thing because I don't feel anything in my inner ear or the seat of my pants! -

Take On Video Settings! - Discuss
TAW_RiEvEr replied to royaltyinexile's topic in TAKE ON HELICOPTERS - GENERAL
Forgive my stupidity, but how do I get Take On to show me the framerate? In Arma I always just ran the Benchmarks to test my settings, but I cannot find a similar facility in the Steam Beta version of TOH. It 'looks' okay, but without any numbers to look at, adjusting options is tricky for me :) -
The last comment I saw from him on his site guestbook (translated roughly) said "Editing Guide 2 will not come before OA". I'm still using the original guide too - brilliant piece of work and a TAW member very kindly printed and bound it for me. Hard copy is so much easier to work with. :)

Specs to run Arma 2 falsely advertised?
TAW_RiEvEr replied to Sniperdoc's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
*yawns* XFire doesn't reliably detect ArmA2 unless you have the Steam Version - and not many of us bought it there... I play ArmA2 a lot, but unless I remember to manually start it from the XFire menu, it doesn't register the hours played. Bit lame trying to use a broken piece of cack like XFire for your stats, isn't it? -
Why list all those translations? Just put up the Hebrew Interlinear (http://www.scripture4all.org/OnlineInterlinear/OTpdf/exo20.pdf) and the discussion is over - off topic now anyway since this is an ArmA2 forum not a "How to mistranslate Hebrew" workshop... *grins*

Armies exist for WAR - that's it. There is no point having an army if you're not planning on fighting *grins* A peacekeeping force, or a deterrent, both mean you are willing to go to war if necessary. The modern army tries to sell itself as a 'career move' which is understandable, since the truth of what happens in Helmand Province doesn't make for a good recruiting video. :) I served 6 years in the British Army and enjoyed most of it. Nobody enjoys polishing things, painting things or stupid 'morale building exercises' (like running 5 miles in groups of four carying telegraph poles - sheesh) or tinpot NCOs who just like yelling at you a lot because they're on a power trip, but I did enjoy the ACTIVE service I saw. It takes a certain mentality to enjoy the army. I still miss it and prefer it to civilian life, but circumstances were against me staying in any longer. To those 'christians' quoting the 10 commandments - a couple of points: 1) There are way more than 10 - that was an arbitrary list extracted by the church from the old testament - picking out the bits they liked and dropping the tricky stuff like not having menstruating women around you, or how you treat donkeys *chuckles* (Check Exodus 34 for example) 2) It does not say "Thou shalt not kill" - that is a mistranslation. It says "Thou shalt not MURDER". (Exodus 20:13, Deut. 5:17) Murder, by definition, is not the same as killing. If ArmA2 puts some people off being in the army, good. They were not cut out for the job and would have got themselves or their comrades killed. If it doesn't put you off, then maybe it's time to investigate doing it for real if you feel that way inclined :D
