In game rifle accuracy - why is it done like this?
TAW_RiEvEr posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
With a real 7.62mm rifle I never miss at 300yds and, in calm winds, can put 5 shots in a grouping that will be covered by a cigarette packet. That was the standard they trained us to in the British Army in the 1980s. In ArmA2 the accuracy seems to suffer drastically at anything over 150yds with standard rifles (no sniper scopes). Why is it this bad? I even tried re-assigning the fire key in case the mouse was moving when I clicked to shoot and it made no difference, the shot will still miss far too often. No I haven't been running, just lying prone and calm waiting for a target... I've had similar comments from other serving and ex-serving forces members in TAW. As a 'simulation', shouldn't the game simulate real life rifle accuracy too? -

Okay - some interesting points there about sight-centering, body position and aiming. I'll experiment a bit. (I was briefly using the 'pause breathing' key before each shot. I tried it without that and the results did seem less accurate.) On the whole the in-game shooting does feel much less accurate than real life weaponry though, unless being a 'Marksman' means I shoot better than 99% of the population, which I doubt. I could teach anyone, who was willing to listen, to shoot with the same accuracy I do - in fact that was part of my job in the forces for a while. ;) -

Hmm.. possible, but it has put a couple of the guys off playing it as it feels artificial to us. Yes - same group - I used to be in the ET:QW team at TAW :) -
As an ex-forces marksman I can assure everyone I never 'held my breath' to take a shot - what we actually did was to relax, breath out and delay taking the inbreath while aiming and firing. A small point, but it's been driving me mad that people actually think 'holding your breath' would increase accuracy. All it does it make you tense and more likely to jerk the trigger and spoil the shot if you retain a lungful of air... *grins*

Is the real Editor not available in the game yet?
TAW_RiEvEr posted a topic in ARMA 2 & OA : BI TOOLS - TROUBLESHOOTING
I read the manual and it says that the Editor should be on the Play menu in game, but it is not there. I have found the Scenarios/My Missions area, and the Wizards for co-op missions, but I wanted to use the full editor so I can make bespoke missions for our squad(s) in TAW. In the manual it says the full editor can load/save/export your missions for co-op, which is what I want to do with them obviously. :D Am I missing it somewhere, or did it get left out of the game for some reason? (I have the 505 English version patched to 1.2.[big number] if that makes a difference.) -

Ah - found it! I was looking for the Editor on the Main Menu (the one the game starts in) and the one I was using was the one in the Scenarios/My Mission - I somehow completely missed the button on the bottom of the single player section - sheesh :) Thank you for pointing out where it should be found *grins* I blame Chernobyl, obviously the radiation blew over here and fried my brain for years... -

Hmm.. I'm not finding it the way the manual says. I load up the game I get options for Single Player, Multiplayer, Options, Armoury, etc. , but nothing mentions the Editor. Page 0.13 of the manual says: "When you select the Editor from the Play menu, you will first be asked for the island ..." Page 0.19: "Mission Management Loading... Merging... Saving... ... Do this by pressing Save. There are several exporting options: ..." I am not getting a SAVE option, or an EXPORTING option, just "Preview" in the scenario missions editor, or the MP Wizard. There is no save button anywhere :) hence my confusion. Does anyone know why I can't find this editor that has a 'Save' option that exports missions? -
Patch plus steam=i cant play
TAW_RiEvEr replied to Mercenary2112's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Usually, to fix the Steam version all you have to do is go to Arma2 in your games list, right click it, select properties and find on the Local Files tab the option to Verify the Integrity of the file cache. Steam will checksum the files and automatically re-download the ones you broke. -
When I was trained in the forces (real guns and everything - oh my) we had to walk through a wooded valley, targets popped up and we fired one 'snapped' round at the target, then immediately dropped to a knee in cover to kill the target when it came back up. We always HIT the target with that first round, even though the aim was to get its head down ready for the second killing shot. Admittedly, I was a marksman, as were those I trained with, but that first shot was over in a couple of tenths of a second and we were heading to cover (with some poor corporal gripping the back of our webbing for dear life so we couldn't accidentally turn round and shoot him *coughs*) I suppose with an automatic weapon a short burst might be applicable, but even with automatic weapons we always fired two or three round bursts - not long staccato ones which tend to push the barrel off target as you continue to fire. I adopt a similar policy in Arma2 and it seems to work for me. I'll have a play with the walking-aimed idea though, game mechanics are always worth exploring.

Now THAT is a proper reply, imho... :D

Using an Eyetracker to control FOV in Arma
TAW_RiEvEr replied to daedalos86's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Eye tracking seems a strange system to use, since this means your eyes will have to look away from the centre of the screen which seems counter-intuitive to me. Head tracking enable you to keep your viewpoint at the screen centre while the view shifts in line with your minimal head movements (usually 30 degrees or less). Freetrack does work with Arma2 if you install PPJoy, btw. That's what I use. -
ARMA2 forces my machine to shutdown
TAW_RiEvEr replied to nekraks's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
A friend of mine has this problem too - he installed Arma2 and all his games started shutting the PC down after 10 minutes or so. He uninstalled Arma2 and his games started working properly again. Wonder how many others have seen this but don't use these forums? -
I hated Arma2 on day one, then by day two it was growing on me. Now I love it and am finally configuring it to suit myself. (Nostromo n52 + FreeTrack :icon_hug: ) The keypresses can ALL be re-assigned, obviously. Also, are you maybe confusing the 'motion blur' effects with lag? The game won't be for everyone as it really needs HOURS of play when you're new to this series it seems, before you start to get the hang of it. I'm now firmly in the 'best FPS I ever played' opinion camp and, as an ex squaddie, suddenly find my RL skills and knowledge give me an advantage for the first time ever in a game :D

Most of the USA mirror site guys will still be in bed :) I'm guessing the EU ones just haven't noticed the file yet.

I noticed people claiming that their downloaded archives were 'corrupt' zip files and posting windows error messages to that effect. Just a heads-up: Windows built in Zip utility (compressed folders) is not that up to date. Download something like the free 7-zip utility (integrates fully with Windows right click menu) and you'll find those zips opening up just fine. http://www.7-zip.org/ Hopefully this will help most people having 'corruption' problems... -

TAW_RiEvEr replied to Placebo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
The archive is not corrupt - you need to use a better zip utility such as 7-zip to open it. I get the same problem if I try to open the archives with Windows built in zip, but 7-zip works fine (and is free). -
You can bail out if he's over 10m up iirc, and your chute opens, at least that way you get to the ground in one piece. Don't know if that helps in your particular situation?

The greatest ARMA 2 experience I have ever had.
TAW_RiEvEr replied to Sky999's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
I loved that same scenario. My take on it: We were dropped off on the beach and our leader tore off up the hill. I spotted a couple of civilians by a car nearby and approached them for intel, but they knew nothing it seems, so I ran up the hill after my SL. At the top of the hill all hell broke loose, the SL started barking out orders to take out an enemy machine gunner to our front so I jinked to the right and came around a derelict building to get a bead on him. The SL kept him busy while I took a few shots and nailed him. A further group of enemy up the main street had pinned down two of our squad members in the old church, and one of them was wounded, so I worked my way forward to their right and put down suppressing fire as the air support arrived and the enemy went into retreat. Their empty position made an ideal machine gun point for me to give support to our sniper when he moved up to attack the retreating forces and this left the way open to the camp ahead, where I was sure we'd meet more resistance. We regrouped briefly near the church where a rescued prisoner gave us some information about what lay ahead and off we went. I won't spoil the rest of the mission for anyone, but it's a great scenario and does feel like you're really part of a team in a firefight. -
I heartily approve of this message - sign me up!

Well, I just spent an hour loading and re-loading Arma2 wondering why I couldn't get my FreeTrack to work with it like Arma1, then I came here and did a forum search or two and eventually found this thread. The question remains then - is there any way to get Freetrack to work in Arma2, pretty please? I'd pay the devs for a patch that fixed it *grins*
