    Mafia 2

as for the Mafia 2 demo - I think it succeeds in transforming you back to the time period in which it is occuring, in this case - the 50's. Driving around with "Rock around the Clock" on the radio just made me feel nostalgic about all those flicks we've all watched which also took place in the 50's. and I think that's the strongpoint of Mafia 2 (demo, but I don't think the feeling will differ in the full game) - that's what makes it a unique experience - the same formula that, IMO, also made Mafia 1 so special - the 30's feeling to it, it was unmatched. for the Obvious GTA comparisons - I have to say this: I'm sure many will agree with me that Vice City was and is still the best GTA game in the whole serie. why? there are so many reasons, but the main one for me - setting! VC is the closest thing for me in terms of going back in time to the 80's. I know R* made it while solidly "Pumping" the nostalgia factor - but there's nothing wrong with that, because it's perfect. I also have to mention OFP:CWC and its expansions. it FELT for me like it was occuring in 1985, apart from a specific song played in a certain helicopter cutscene. I played it and kept saying - this is 1985, I'm participating in the cold war, Reagan is sitting in the oval office right now, people go around with big hair. I don't know how it affected others, it might be weird, but I loved and I still do. guess I'm saying that games that somehow take you into a time machine are always good.

    1-6 Behind Enemy Lines

Started playing the Mission earlier, with a smile because of the humor. Really enjoying it so far, I got ArmA 2 a week ago after much anticipation and frustrating delays in getting it, and just today when playing this game I suddenly got this "OFP" feeling. feels like I'm back home. Thank you!

    ARMA 2 Developer´s Diary

yeah, makes me proud to have a Czech grandmother ;) looking forward to the next videos. the first one regarding basic movement actually made me bring a few new players to the game.

I'm looking at my ArmA 2 Hard-copy right now and it says on the back: "THE ULTIMATE MILITARY SIMULATOR". you really thought you will be able to jump off trees and waste five tangos with your uber-ak47, take a shot the head and go find a medikit? I must say that I was kinda lagging with the BF2 fiasco. the game was released during my army service and back then I couldn't really play any online games. after discharge, I got BF2 because I heard about PR. I got around to playing BF2 Vanilla a few times, alone on a server, and it was nice, but it wasn't nothing like every experience I ever had in PR. Tactics, Patience, Teamwork, Smart relaxed gameplay. That's something not every game offers you, bringing you to something which can be tagged as the equivalent of a real-life battlefield. few games really do that. I can think of PR, WWIIOnline, aspects of AA3, and OFP that shattered all grounds in 2001. Your question regarding "what is the logic in playing such realistic games" actually lacks basic justification. people play sims since the early 80's. there are simulators for everything, raging from trains to driving buses and transport lorries. in a world in which warfare is so "popular", you could expect that a market of realistic warfare simulations will be required. for many years, people wanted a SIM that will make them feel like they are really engaging in RL battle. then OFP came along. and now ArmA 2 comes, improved, polished, and sexier. ofcourse, most rigs can't handle its harsh requirements or lack of much needed optimization, yet, it has the power to make people fall in love with it, because it's scope is so big and its endless array of possibilties, be it the expansive mission editor or the dedicated community that creates mods and new material. Truth to be told I don't understand why you had to bring that up in the first place. yes, you're a nice guy, you didn't come here to troll, but seriously, what did you think you'll get by asking "why do realistic games exist" in an ArmA 2 forum? why does it bother you so much? I don't like hunting games, do I go on their forums and ask them "Hey, why do you play hunting games?" so they'll say "We're better off doing it in our PC's than in real life". so if you ask me why I play ArmA 2, I'll tell you that I'm better off facing the harsh gritty reality that is Combat and warfare in my PC than in RL, and this is a thing that ArmA2, despite it's flaws, Delivers.

    ArmA 2 vs. OFP 1

Right on, Brotha! that mission is burnt down in my conscience. no other game made you feel like the feeling you got in that mission. such fear and thrill. amazing how a game makes you actually feel you're behind enemy lines.

    ArmA 2 vs. OFP 1

ARMA2 is great, but it will be perfect when it goes back to the 80's. ;) that actually is the difference for me. I like playing and feeling like im back then in the cold war. OFP succeeded in capturing that 80's cold war feeling just like Vice City captured the 1986 feel of Miami.

    A big "wow" !

I actually did that lots of times already in the demo. during night time placed a few groups of BLUFOR and OPFOR, sided with tanks, a road or a big field in between, set myself as a parachutist civilian, looking down and admiring the beauty, sometimes getting caught between fire or joining the insurgents.
  9. Definitely the best game in it's genre as it stands today. however, Operation Flashpoint will always remain my sweetheart. it was a blast when it came out back in June 2001. noone knew how to swallow it. it was a virtual battlefield (unlike other games That came out in June 2001 claiming to be the "Virtual Battlefield" :P) and the setting, 1985, cold war, everything. it takes place in the eighties, and i'm a sucker for that decade, so playing the game was much better for me to think I'm back in 1985, like Vice City which took place in 1986. ArmA II is a gem. I played on a coop server two days ago and worked closely with 3 other squad mates, attacking villages together, it was quite magical, like the first time playing Project Reality (a fantastic game infront of itself).
  10. Yeah, Kreng ;) Just spent 3 hours in a coop server, found 3 teamplayers, formed a squad. great times. just wanted to share. the wait was worth it.

    ARMA 2 worth buying?

Demo has quite a few MP modes in it, COOP included. from what I've seen in the full game, squad assignment in big Coop servers (Evolution) is quite similar to Project Reality's. the game has VOIP, I haven't tried it yet but I'm pretty sure you can make it squad-specific. so you don't have to type anything at all. :)
  12. Might I add on the "Dwindling Sales" issue, that besides the fact that ArmA II is a very "crowd-specific' game, it probably also has to do with the unavailability of the Hard copy in lots of different retailers. I've encountered many people who are not interested in purchasing the Steam version and prefer the retail copy, that are having a hard time trying to purchase the game in local game stores. Some stores say it has to do with distribution issues, some are not aware of the game at all. I personally know of quite a few people who are waiting for the hard copy version for almost a month. I was lucky enough to buy an extra-copy from a friend who ordered from abroad.
  13. got my great smelling copy today from GAME.co.uk. game still hasn't showed up in my country, and I can assure you people are waiting for it. I wonder what's the hold-up.
