  1. ..One thing that ARMA2 really needs is a manual (I just read a post elsewhere in which a new player with OA said he was thinking of buying A2 to get a manual. OFC he'll be disappointed in that regard; but he'll have a great game)..

That was me and I've decided to stick with Arrowhead and learn it as I go along with lots of keypressing and stuff.

All it takes is time, and as I'm retired i've got all the time in the world because retirement is the world's longest coffee break..:)

  2. How?

How can I make infantry fire at a position I tell them to watch?

With tanks 200mm shells or similar you can use command fire, but you cant use that with the coax (machine gun on the main cannon).

What I meant was that in a multiplayer game, you can order your all-human squad to spray a clump of trees or whatever with small-arms fire if you think invisible enemy units might be in there, it's a common real-life tactic.

But if you're commanding an AI squad, there's no order in ArmA available to make them do it.

PS- The "Suppressive Fire" order is something completely different, as guys have pointed out to me in this thread.

  3. How do you define suspected positions? You suspect enemy to be at position, therefore AI should suspect it too? ;)

Thanks guys, it seems I misinterpreted what "suppressive fire" means in AA terms.

PS- Other wargames call it something like "area fire" or "searching fire", hence my confusion here

  4. As tank commander, when I select "Suppressive fire" to hopefully shoot at suspected enemy positions, nothing happens, my gunner must be asleep.

The Arrowhead manual contains no mention of "suppressive fire" at all, so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong?

  5. The Arrowhead printed manual is very slim, isn't there a more detailed online manual anywhere?

I'm beginning to suspect I'll have to buy Arma 2 to get a full manual.

At the moment i'm stuck in Arrowhead on two things-

1- why won't my Apache stop and hover at the final waypoint instead of flying blindly on into enemy territory?

2- when I order my tanks to "suppressive fire" on suspected enemy positions, why won't they fire?

How the hell do you laze targets with the apache and fire hellfires? I lazed, but the damn hellfire won't follow everytime I change my weapon to hellfire.

Try the 'Tab' key to cycle targets, and play about with a brief right mouse button click.

You should get big white crosshairs, I think the laser locks on automatically.

    Then just fire

That's on your Action Menu if you have proper ammo I believe. Try a mouse wheel scroll.

    Sorry, won't work

  6. Gunter and Kylania thank you..:)

PS- But I'm still stuck on placing Artillery in the Editor. Here's the opening paragraph of the WIKI tutorial which looks easy at first sight-

    The Artillery Firing Interface

If you just want to play around with the Artillery as a player, you can do so by doing the following. Set up a static Artillery vehicle (empty). Put an Artillery GameLogic on the map. Syncronize the Artillery GameLogic with the static weapon you placed. If this is not done, the Artillery module features may not run properly in a multiplayer mission. Finally, start the game and get into the Artillery.

    http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Artillery_Module#Introduction

But I can't find a 'static artillery vehicle' in the Editor unit listings, what's one of them?

    And what's an 'Artillery GameLogic?'

  7. Either just hit PrintScreen and paste into Paint or use a program like Xfire or FRAPS or something.

Yeah thanks, I just downloaded free FRAPS and it works like a dream;;)

The Printscreen key is no good during multiplayer games because you have to keep leaving the game in order to save each shot individually to your hard drive, then return to the game.

But with FRAPS you can hit the Printscreen key any number of times without having to leave the game, because they're all auto-stored for you..:)

  8. Yes I've been dabbling with the editor all day, it works smooth as silk.

Just one thing- I can't for the life of me find an editor routine that allows me to place artillery and airstrikes which I can call in during battles.

Can it be done? i don't want to spend hours wading through the manuals or whatever trying to find out..:)

PS- Where can I buy the 'British Armed Forces' addon for AO?

    Is it download only?

  9. Okay thanks, I patched to OA 1.54.

Just one thing- I completed all the Boot Camp missions, but why can't I play with most of the toys in the Armoury?

Most are locked, so how on earth can I access them?

PS- I mean, I paid £25 (40 US dollars) for OA, so the last thing I want is to be denied access to most of the weaponry (sniffle)..

  10. Thanks, I WANT to like ArmA but as long as I can't do area-fire like in real-life (below) I shall sit sulking. Meantime I'll search around for a mod

    US Marines v Iraqi bus

    *Explicit Content*

1- An insurgent runs towards the white hut on right and dives into it

2- But even though the grunts can't now see him, they still spray the hut to kingdom come with area-fire, notice the dust being kicked up by the hail of fire

3- And the guy is toast, you can run bub but you can't hide..

    *Explicit content*

But we can't do area-fire like that in ArmA because the instant a target vanishes into a hut or bush or whatever, our squad just stand around like shmucks because there's no way in the game to order them to spray the hut or any other cover

  11. You've seen that youtube video where an Iraqi insurgent dives into a wooden hut thinking he'll be safe from American rifle fire because they can't see him?

Bad call, the grunts simply riddle the hut with rifle fire and shred him inside. There ya go..:)

But in ArmA you can only riddle stuff yourself while the rest of your squad watch you like dummies because there's no way in the game to make them join in.

Like I said its a standard real-world tactic, and until ArmA incorporates a 'squad area-fire' command I can't take the game seriously
