Error: The display driver NVLDDMKM has stopped responding
-)rStrangelove replied to psychoul's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I'm on XP SP3 and get the "nv4disp.dll" Problem as well. It always happens after i run ArmA for abou 1 hour (doesnt matter if i'm playing or in the menu). After i took out my Audigy4 and uninstalled the creative drivers ArmA ran straight for several hours (no sound though). Haven't tested it with onboard sound yet because onboard sound is NOT an option for me. Imo it could be down to: - soundcard in a slot where its shared resources interfere with the gfxcard - MB slot is broken on that spot - soundcard is not seated fully (i noticed after i unscrewed it i could take it out very easily) - soundcard is broken (i want an X-Fi anyway) Hope this info helps somebody. This problem has bugged me since i got my new pc mid january. -
I'm with Manzilla. I have 100+ Mission concepts and test missions on my HD, only 1 or 2 were totally finished, tested and uploaded somewhere. I guess one thing that turned me off is the tedious testing of my own mission scripts. If you played a scenario 50 times and still get bugs with things not happening or triggers not firing it's very easy to give up. As Manzilla said, you get mission ideas faster than you can actually finish those missions. Although without finishing a mission you might never get enough knowledge how to get better with planning & testing a mission. It's a Catch22! :P

Avgani 1.5 & Afghan village 1.0
-)rStrangelove replied to opteryx's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Hey Opteryx thx for releasing these great islands. Just wanted to tell you i didn't have any slowdowns in the heart of the city, whether on foot or in a vehicle. Even flying over it in a LBird is pretty smooth. Got a strong PC (Quad@3.3Ghz, 4GB ram) though. Only thing that catched my eye was the fact that while driving on the main road i could pass over the little sidewalk between both roads on foot, but my Hummveh got stuck. Apart from that, excellent work - keep it up! :)- 61 replies

TALIBAN! TALIBAN! TALIBAN!!!
-)rStrangelove replied to miles teg's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
I'm working on a custom config with Taliban right now. I'll release single config pbos for Blue, Red and Independant side so ppl can mix units as they like. However, i have big problems lately finding servers which don't kick me for playing with custom units. Now i understand that servers don't crash that much when ppl use the vanilla version, but imo it kills the online fun for me. All these great addons just for single player? CMON! :p -
BI press release Re: OFP title and development
-)rStrangelove replied to M.Andersson(SWE)'s topic in BOHEMIA INTERACTIVE - GENERAL
Wait a second... ... so if BIS would've announced they need money / donations sent to them and a lot of fans here would've responded we would be playing ArmA2 right now? Damn. I mean, it's not a bad idea is it? If you already know you def WILL buy a new game when it comes out eventually why not send the full prize to the developers beforehand? You get a code via mail, go to a pc games shop, show the code and get the original game without paying another time. Oh come on, it's soooo easy! -
You sure you don't use a custom sound mod with ArmA? In the mod i use some awesome cracking sounds when bullets fly by make me deaf for almost a minute, but that's normal (i guess). Same goes for grenades.
-
Exactly what i think too, but on a more general level. Imo 99% of all games today are far too simple. Even Rockstar planned to reuse an arcadish steering for their vehicles in GTA4 when they finally found out ppl enjoyed a more realistic and difficult approach. Me and my brother use GTA4 as a NFS-clone now because the racing experience is really rewarding after you get the hang of all the high speed sliding.

True. But a letter isn't the right way to mobilize gamers, an awesome video on YouTube/ a playable demo is. That would make everyone shut up. Â -
"Arma" brand impeding on Arma2's success?
-)rStrangelove replied to BLSmith2112's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Operation Flashpoint isn't an issue-free name to ppl who didn't play ArmA tbh. I know lots of ppl who said something like: "Operation Flashpoint? Yeah, i remember. Wasn't that the mil simulation with the shitty bitmap bushes, where you walked 10mins to the frontline only to be shot by something you didn't even see?" Go figure. -

I gotta say i have mixed feelings about Maruk's letter. What matters is the game, not the name - absolutely true! But: why oh why protesting at all? Why not just leave them sell the game and see how it goes? Why do you care? I think it's a sign of weakness to react in such a way, i mean (i guess) CM can legally do with the name whatever they want. This letter shows you guys think OpF2 could be a threat to your ArmA sales. The purpose of the letter can't be to 'wake up' some players, and make them switching over to ArmA2, can it? Cause it shouldn't really matter for us as gamers what we play as long as it's great fun. I played many many other games besides OpF, like BF, BF2, Cod4 etc etc. All good warfare games but still different from OpF/ArmA. And guess what? If both ArmA2 and OpF2 will be great games, i'll buy them both. I'd see to it my next game is really kicking *ss than to write letters tbh. -
Anyone else still playing old/retro games?
-)rStrangelove replied to berghoff's topic in OFFTOPIC - Games & Gaming
Good one - although I actually like the first one more. I think it's a pity the series was discontinued (or at least no similar funny games released in a long, long time). Little off topic here, but Sony's The Agency will come very close to the style of the NOLF games. And no, no monthly costs. -
... or just follow the link in my sig. ARRRR!

Yup, i'm a gameplay guy. I don't need HQ gfx to have fun with a game. Still playing: 1. Covert Action (on DOS Box) 2. No One Lives Forever 2 3. Xwing Alliance (+ HQ models) 4. Diablo 2 & LoD 5. Blade Runner (runs in Win98 Comp.mode) 6. JediKnight 2 7. Ghost Recon Advanced War Fighter I & II 8. Aliens vs Predator 2 9. Return to Castle Wolfenstein -
Show me a 20Eur BF2 mod which offers 3 maps with a couple of ww2 vehicles and i show you the finger. As easy as that.

Why not a medieval theme game from BIS?
-)rStrangelove replied to laggy's topic in BOHEMIA INTERACTIVE - GENERAL
I agree the fights we saw in Mel Gibson's Pioneer would be pretty pointless to be played in 1st person. Switch the scenario over to the Roman Empire period (what we saw in Gladiator) and you have a winner i guess. About animations: The way the LoD system works in ArmA could also be used for a LoA system (Level of Animation) i guess. If you see 100 fighters around you you won't notice the 30 ppl in the distance don't play HQ animations, a simpler attack & parry loop would work because you're mostly paying attention to your closest enemies. God, i'd love to race across a battlefield with a horse lol -

Still enjoying Evo almost every day since 1st version came out. What puts me off a bit is how many servers run the 'n00b' versions. Imo scripts like MHQ and flag teleport destroy the original coop atmosphere of the mission. Ppl don't care about stranded vehicles or about helping other ppl out, they only rush back to the frontline to get high scores. Now i'm not the guy to tell these ppl how to play Evo, but let me tell you you're missing something i call 'coop consience' - the moment where all players are in deep trouble around a town and then suddenly start working together organizing repair convoys and coordinating artillery strikes with bomb runners. I remember we had a huge repair convoy (2 trucks, 2 Vulcans) driving up high into the mountains because the BH FFAR was lost. Sheer fun. That said, i hope we see more Evolution versions for ARMED ASSAULT 2

Got the same mainboard, same soundcard, same winxp, same ram. Game runs perfectly. Differences on my side: - Nvidia Gtx260 - BeQuiet Powerunit 550W You sure 500W are enough and your powerunit isn't unstable / of low quality? Maybe google whether other ppl have problems with it. I had serious problems getting my system to run stable in the past. That was before i found ppl had problems with a BeQuiet 550 & gigabyte board & NV 9850. Changed to another NVidia (8800 GTS back then) and everything was fine.

Just my 2 cents. If you have AI groups defending, patrolling and fighting each city / base all over North and South Sahrani at once you'll end up with a 5fps screensaver. Ask yourself if you really need to do this although you already gave the answer: you only need to give the impression of a big battle. So i guess what you need first is a system that calculates battle outcomes between cities even if there's no AI group spawned. If i would need to do this, i'd use a script calculating win/loose chances by simple rules: Calculation for each city: 1. How many enemy cities are near me and how many troops / troop types are there ? 2. How many friendly cities are near me and how many troops / troop types are there ? Then compare both chances and add a little random amount to each side and you may have what you wanted. After this works, you need a script to track the positions of all online players and only spawn AI groups in those areas where players can see / hear them (1000m ?). That way each player might have the impression there's a big war going on everywhere they go. Cities that are out of sight are sometimes lost to the enemy, so they need to check the map often when making decisions where to go. Friendly cities could have changed their status during the last minutes. Just my opinion of course...

I had less lags and crashes after i started using -maxmem 512 again. (with 1.14) Might be worth a try, it surely doesnt break anything.
-
Thx for clearing that up - it just sounds soo weird. Abrams is not floating and Hummve is, only because the server doesnt have the addons? Makes no sense at all! Guess a desert vehicle replacement is a NO GO in MP. -sigh- :P
-
I'm sorry but this is not possible. Only the replacement Humvees, Strykers and the Motorbike are floating, all other replacements are perfectly ok. So it's def not server related. (i think)

The most important features ARMA 2 needs to have
-)rStrangelove replied to Stryder's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Most important feature i'd like to see is DISAPPEARING TREES I'm talking about trees that are run over by a large vehicle or are hit by a large explosion. In ArmA they fall to the ground and totally block the line of sight of human players. However, the AI can see & shoot through them. This totally freaks me out everytime i die. (happens on Evo a lot)
