@OP Try to spot 3 easily identifiable landmarks: towers, forests, roads, coasts, radio masts, hill tops, etc. Now find them on the map. Now read off the direction they are to you using your compass. This should give you a rough idea of your location. This can be easier or harder depending on view distance, terrain variety and other aspects. But it's a useful skill if you're ever without a GPS.

I'd stay clear of arrestor cable deaths, would only serve as one more thing to piss people off, especially if there's no respawn. Looking awesome so far JDog, can't wait. :)

Now find a real life video of a Harrier taking off vertically with six 1000lb Paveways onboard. :p Theres a reason for ski jumps (or there was, damn you coalition government...).

Realistic military task [discussion]

Just in case these help. Mind they differ from country to country. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OPORD Or a general Warning Order Some elements wont apply in Arma and can be omitted. -
tired of simplistic soldier status, this is supposed to be a simulation!

It's more of a "this isn't necessary in the core game and should be scripted when needed" thing. For an Abandoned Armies style game, yeah. Hunting for clean water and rations would add a lot to the adventure. But for the every day 1-3 hour combat mission, no thanks. Got enough to worry about dodging incoming fire and oncoming trees. :p -

That's true. But the riflemen and other soldiers wont open up until you actually land. This serves the purpose of conserving ammo and not giving away positions, but often leaves troops defenceless, when combined fire might at least have some effect.

Apologies also, misread the request. Something I tend to do a bit too often. :p Guess I was thinking terrorist=taliban, or something along those lines. You mean these guys yeah?

It's essentially a bug, yes. It would be better if the AI could judge when an aircraft is low and slow enough to become a target for combined small arms fire.

Sure it is! That's its party piece. Either crew member can take control and slave it to their eye. Hell, if this was implemented, it might persuade me to get TrackIR. :p It can be controlled via the Target Acquisition and Designation System (TADS), which is your standard view down the nose mounted optics, or via the Integrated Helmet and Display Sighting System (IHADSS), which is aligned with the helmet. I think Hellfires can also be locked and fired in this manner, not 100% certain though.

@NouberNou Gotcha, thanks for the info! @Mike That looks sweet!

Or a trench? From what i've read it seemed to give the Brits pause for thought, at least until fast jets were brought to bear and the snipers got to work.

Veering off topic slightly, I have heard of them bypassing the fuses early in the war, to allow them to use RPGs are mortars over distance.

Think of this way. You're a helicopter pilot in a hot zone, you either have to loiter to provide CAS or drop and pluck troops off the ground. Now someone starts firing big angry rocket grenades at you. You might be able to shrug off rifle fire. You might even take a 50 cal hit and live to tell the tale. But if one of those things makes contact, it will ruin your day. So while they're not accurate, they are plentiful, and they scare the shit out of pilots, making them effective suppressive AA weapons against low, slow helicopters. Obviously in most situations it'd be a waste, but i'd still like to reenact the real life scenarios where pilots have had to deal with RPG fire. So again, it comes down to Arma2 not being able to distuinguish between well disciplined, well equipped troops, and crazed militia with low-tech weapons and little regard for their own survival.

Please BIS! :p

You have to decide the nature of the forces using the RPG. And Arma2 can't do that on its own. Taliban forces have fired countless RPGs at coallition aircraft over the years, and have had hits on occasion. But it seems more often to be a suppressive tactic to deter pilots from enacting close air support. Now that might be an acceptable tactic for the insurgent and militia forces in game. But do you then want the CDF and Takistan Army forces to be doing the same? There's also the issue where RPG rounds almost always explode when fired at aircraft and almost always doing no damage. That could be an ACE problem, can't remember. Definitely needs fixing though, bit of a game breaker. EDIT: Pretty baffled by some of the earlier posts in this thread. RPGs seem to be almost the AA weapon of choice in recent conflicts. Nothing Hollywood about it.

More to the point, the JDAM is GPS guided, which the Mk82s in game are not. No stock Arma2 weapons are GPS guided, there are no JDAMs in stock Arma2. That's why they're designated as Mk82s. GPS, incidentally, has to be the most boring method of delivering a weapon I can imagine. :p

Excellent for flying fast jets around! I'd forgotten just how annoying ACE black-outs are. :)
