Last I heard it's based in the Doom universe but not following the events of the game. In my opinion its a good idea since you wont piss off the fans for getting the storyline wrong.

By combine commander do you mean the Combine Elites, since they lead squads of the normal Combines? Since if they were, couldn't you just take those for reference?
