    Local Hosting help..

lol.. i appreciate your attempt at: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting I'm not asking for your help though Gunter, i was really asking why there is no basic options regarding bandwidth configuration for hosting a local server.. Or how the settings are not tweaked when hosting a server on lan, to my knowledge. Its easy, try loading up the editor placing 2 playable characters down, saving to multiplayer.. export and then play it as a local server across lan.. You cannot configure the connection settings now ingame.. And there are no files you can edit to increase the bandwidth usage to maximun to take full advantage of the lan you are playing on. So as you can see, my post doesnt really concern computer specs.. Or what type of gamemode.. Its regarding an integral option that most FPS games allow you to change with the 'console' (Finally, i have 2 pc's and 2 copies of arma.. Im going to retest this now, but i dont see any mention of this being added/changed, so i dont expect it to be fixed. Just hoping im not alone and someone else would like to see an improvement on this front.. Also, arma is not the only game i play, these pcs perform well with all other tasks they do not have bandwidth problems with other programs. )

    How to mark targets?

[[ive highlighted the important bit of my ramble in the hope it helps someone lol ]] For some reason i had to change the controls to remove 'back' from the right mouse button to get the right-mouse targeting for AI subordinates to work properly and consistantly... But at least it works now and i dont have to use left-mouse-button which makes them 'engage' and leave formation.. and its quicker than pressing.. F2, 2, target.. etc. But that's the difference ive noted, Left mouse makes them engage, which cancels current orders and causes them to run off.. Right mouse makes them target them, but stay in position/firemode.. I never really play as squadmember but it would make sense that both the above orders would give the same red reticle on easy-mode.. Perhaps making it change colour depending on your firemode. Not important to me personally, because i dont play on easy mode.. But i can see why it would give new players problems.
  3. I just wanted to say.. Bravo, and thanks. Not only has this mission been long needed.. (for those of us who enjoy ferrying troops in) but its entertaining (kudos on the voice acting for immersion) and well designed.. (i got shot and almost run out of fuel near the last drop but someone has been clever enough to put the fuel-truck at H ;) ) and it even leads onto a second mission. Thanks a lot for the quality of not only the BAF campaign but also these small scenario missions. Just wanted to give my 2p, the BAF campaign/scenario quality is really nice, imo.
  4. Hi, I was hoping for some [help\advice\pointing me to useful scripts\anything] really regarding a mission id like to put together for a few friends.. But it'd also serve as a good muck-about for singleplayer as well i imagine.. Kind of inspired by We-were-soldiers (la drang valley, mel gibson, etc) I'd like to know if there are any missions out there too, like this.. Where you as high command have to position a few squads in strategic locations to hold off a massive attack, whilst you have reinforcements flown into an lz.. which you obviously have to hold as well... The reinforcements would then [after being flown in via helicopter] either reinforce existing squads[preferred], or simply join the highcommand you control.. What would also be good is some indicator on how well each position is doing, so you know where needs your immediate attention, and i think this is the part i really need help with.. Any scripts/advice would be appreciated.. As i could currently make something like this using waypoints only but the amount of grief that i'd get from all the various possibilities of what might happen [eg - what happens when the helicopter ferrying troops in via waypoints gets shot down en route to the lz] makes it quite a daunting task. Cheers
  5. I think i already have the VTE preview, but vietnam objects wasnt really what i was wondering about.. I'm more interested if anyone knows how, you can check the status of various groups, and have it displayed ingame in a sort of mini-UI.. and also, how you can have a reinforcement helicopter fly in, drop a group off at an LZ.. then have that group take the status info and reinforce/join the most under-strength squad.. I imagine its not very easy so if anyone has worked on something like this before and can give me a few pointers it'd go a long way... im sure i can probably bodge the rest together using my terrible scripting abilities and waypoints ;)

    What's your commander style?

..Just say you were running off to get reinforcements, or something.. Nobody will call you on it. Those mortars on that mission are epic, i ordered half my section into one of the jackels and a mortar hit it and took them all out lol. Regarding commander style. Advance in column formation with an expendable pointman upfront - I'm the leader, i dont take the first bullet. :j:
  7. Hi, i did a search or two but im pretty lame when it comes to scripting, and would appreciate if anyone could answer this quicky.. So.. Im making a helicopter landing, ive set the helicopter to careless& undamageable and so it almost always lands successfully.. but if a memeber of the squad in the cargo gets shot before landing, they squad commander doesnt seem to realise and so (sometimes) the helicopter wont fly off.. because there's still dead squaddies in the back (this is with sync'd waypoints) ..so i want to setup my choppers next waypoint, to have a condition, which checks the cargo is empty.. Can any of you code monkeys please give me the secrets :) because as i said already, im pretty crap at scripting missions... I bolded it for someone anyone who might have a -really- short attention span, id prefer not to include anyones 'preconfigured insertion scripts' for the fact its easier for my brain to do it within the editor with mainly just waypoints. cheers

    2, Advance

I just thought id drop a quick note in that i think ive found a bug... or at least, the games changed and this new 'feature' confuses me. When you've got a squad of guys.. and you're walking in column and you tell 2 to advance.. so you want him alone to run infront 50m and take point.. (so he gets shot instead of you) everyone else in the squad follows behind him and advance past you.. They keep formation, but they all advance 50m.. the result is, your are at the back of the column, whereas i personally only want 2 to advance.. Not the whole formation. If i wanted that i'd highlight everyone and tell them to advance. I'm quite sure Arma2 never used to do that, and it happens very often.. I've actually had it not happen and retain the 'original arma behaviour' but i've not idea what the slight difference was in the situation to cause it? Is this intended? if it is, how can i tell just 2.. to walk ahead? Thanks

    2, Advance

Bumpity Just making sure someone (dev) see's this.. if its a known issue, nevermind.
  10. Im just removing the question considering it all appears to be working and it was me that was making the errors ;)

OA co2 One Shot, one kill error.

I also got this error... im pretty sure i know what caused it for me though.. He was escaping into the helicopter and i killed him after he got in... But the rotors were already spinning so the helicopter took off.. and i failed. Even though he was dead.. Pretty funny i thought, but still frustrating - i didnt bother to redo the mission after that..

    exThreads

What would be the best values for a triplecore? And also, do we even need to change these values? I mean this is a sticky thread but the first post seems to be all technical lingo and not much relevant information for your 'average user' who just wants to know... What does this have to do with me/ How can i use this to improve performance.
  13. Ok, this is a feature request, of sorts.... it was definately in Arma1. In arma1 (and ofp i think) you could right click men, who you had spotted.. with troops selected, and your men would 'target' them.. (NOT engage them, current left click action) - This was great for setting up an ambush, you could then: Tilde, 3, 1 (All, open fire) and everyone you had targetted would die as they were noticing incoming fire... All worked great.. Now this has been removed in arma2.. The only way to target is by selecting your soldier and pressing '2' to bring up target menu, then choosing from the spotted-objects. But what if there are only 2 units spotted, and they are the same model/class/name.. Now you can't tell the difference from that menu? What was wrong with the old way.. :s why remove it, any chance itll get added back in? Hopefully someone knows what im talking about lol
  14. I suppose its not really valid request considering how the game handles animations in general.. I mean it would be almost impossible for them to get the guy in that video, to have the correct stances and inflections for his speech patterns because of the way the AI's constantly running awareness checks and always doing AI-stuff on the fly.. Like the automated/disconnected blinking.. head swivelling.. etc. So they cant just have him run an animation that ignores everything going on in the game world, because of armas fantastic randomness.. Whereas in the cinematic shooters.. they just turn off all the AI, turn off the player-control so hes viewing through a camera.. play well-acted well-animated animations.. Someone dies, the animations stop and then it all goes back to normal again.. But you cant have that in arma because of the 'freedom' which is harsh - Still, as im not a dev, i can suggest the improvement and hope someone works out how they can do it - not me though, im not getting paid :D
  15. So if you remove back as r.click ... that makes it work like old arma1? wow thanks if this fixes it you are a diamond sir ;)
  16. Sigh. - No its unrealistic and unwanted for them to waste money/time changing arma2. The original post was about voice acting in general, thats why i posted it in a new topic... as preperation for the new game/addon coming out.. But sadly it got moved into this topic and kind of lost the point. (hint). Still, the point being (for those who say it doesnt matter) is that your trying to trick/immerse yourself through the computer.. You can only do it with 2 senses, sight and sound.. So being that the voices are 50% of the conviction that you have a soldier standing infront of you.. Might be nice if he actually sounded like he knew what he was talking about.. ---------------------------------------------------- Ok, and i was doubting how bad it was.. Then i googled "Arma2 campaign voice acting" - one of the first results coming up. Watch that and tell me there's nothing wrong. Also, the top result was titled: "In the history of gaming, ArmA2 has the worst voice acting in any ..." - at least im not alone.
  17. Shame, because the voice acting was introduced with the game, not the patch. And again, im not talking about the automated-target-calling thats added together on-the-run.. that's not that bad. Its the pre-recorded sentences you hear in briefing rooms and when everyone takes a knee... and the god awful attempts at 'banter' in the back of the chopper. They just dont cut it.. compared to other 'cinematic' games. - They're ok.. better than some games, but kinda remind me of a cheesey 80's B-movie where the acting seems 'forced' I'm just trying to give my opinion, if your going to try and be cinematic.. step it up a notch, hire professional voice actors. Real ones. Or focus on what you do best - open-ended freedom. And avoid jumping on the.. 'we need a "CINEMATIC" campaign with lots of bad voice acting" because you really dont... just a few replayable/random missions and the ability to make your own. Personally ive played the singleplayer campaign once, and its 100x better than ofp and arma, but meh.. Perhaps im alone ;)

    Give us pink! (Direct Channel)

+1 Why not also prefix messages with who-typed them? havent noticed if arma2 does that..
  19. Wow yeh.. i had actually forgot about the in-combat voice. I was talking about in the singleplayer missions, where people are giving you objectives.. like when you're on the aircraft carrier.. etc. Personally i can put up with the MAN.. FRONT.. CLOSE stuff because thats such an improvement on Arma1 - its quite informative. (and in truth ive turned off the actual voice because im using ACE2) :D
  20. The voice acting. I was just looking in the arrowhead thread, someone made a joke about it.. It's funny, but (and i hate to compare) look at other serious "Cinematic" games, you'll find they hire profssional actors to voice their game characters, and in the end.. it makes a big difference. - Some games make you feel immersed in a believable world... Arma's voice acting on the other hand, actually makes me cringe at times.. And there are big delays inbetween the sound-bytes, which again.. breaks the immersion and helps only to remind you.. "This guy only has 3 recorded sentences." But, i've been playing since the original OFP. I know that BI was creating whole islands whilst other Devs were making box-room by box-room linear-rail shooters.. So i know the focus is on "other things" It's just, personally, i feel that this area is waaaay up there, in terms of priority, and it often gets overlooked. Its also prevalent in animation/cinematics editing.. Anyway ill stop rambling, maybe im the only person to feel this strongly about it ;) - Oh and keep up the good work, looking forward to arrowhead
  21. Hi, I am a noob when it comes to scripting.. But im attempting to do a touch-and-go landing of sorts with the littlebirds using waypoints.. ..I've found this is doable using flyinheight in the OnAct field.. and you can get the AI to do a half decent low flight in, but then id like to "reset" the flyinheight so the AI goes back to 'fully automated flying' if that makes sense.. ..what value does this for the command? or is it not possible.. I tried setting it to -1, and null. But as i say, im a noob at scripting
  22. Hi, I have recently come into some inheritance money.. and so, with it i was deciding to be sensible (not) and spend it upgrading my PC.. Firstly, im unsure what to upgrade on my PC.. as im not sure what's bottlenecking, but i suspect the graphics card could use a beefing up as i run the game in 3840*1024.. It runs SWEET when i stare into the sky, but that doesnt help me much in combat. I have an Nvidia9800GT 512MB card pushing that.. with the help of SoftTH. I was considering getting the Matrox Triplehead2GO and another card.. but as i say, im unsure whether that would improve the gameplay significantly, and its a hell of a waste of £300 if it doesnt. So my questions are, if anyone can help: How much of an improvement do you get running arma2 with SLI? - I used to run arma1 with SLI a loooonog time ago, when i had XP on my old pc.. with some 7600's.. but as those cards weren't exactly top of the line and so it was to expected to get a performance boost, and what i remember there were a lot of issues with SLI. Could anyone help me determine what would be the most viable performance improvement for my PC, considering i will be running Arma2 in 3840*1024 res? I'm quite experience with building PCs.. but im reluctant to waste this money :) i guess it would be foolish not to post my pc specs which are: - Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 Board - AM2 Athlon64 X2 BE 6400+ (3.2ghz) CPU - corsair 4gig DDR2 ram - 9800GT 512 primary gfx - 7600GT 256 secondary gfx (but doesnt need to be any good when using softTH) hopefully there's enough info in there, and sorry if i posted in the wrong forum but i assumed as im doing this pretty much for arma2 it was relevant.

    Here's a fun command bug

I've also experienced this bug playing warfare.. its very noticable when you've assigned (for example) 3,4,5 to team red... and you select them individually.. and instead of hearing what you'd expect you hear (TEAM RED), you get: "ALL, GO TO, BLaaaa bla bla" and im sitting thinking.. ..i only selected team red. It doesn't happen all the time, but ive had it happen. so +1 for this bug from me. - Also, you cant select a team by holding spacebar anymore, and give them orders.. you have to select a team by individual members, unless im doing something wrong.. this seems like a step backwards
  24. Or perhaps im just a noob.. Im running Vista64 and i have an 8800GTS, and an Athlon 64X2 which is running at 3.3ghz [at the moment] The thing is, im running the game on triplehead [3840*1024] too, and im trying to get the best performance i can, obviously.. But at the moment, the benchmark results come out kind-of dire.. Despite the fact missions and MP runs well.. I don't know where the bottleneck is, i can overclock my CPU and/or GPU further.. but im reluctant to do it without knowing for certain which would benefit from it most... (Its hardly worth overclocking my GFX card, for example, if the CPU is the bottleneck) -- [edit] - The same goes for spending money on upgrades, its hardly worth me buying a new CPU, if the gfx card is holding back my FPS.. So, anyone who can give a bit of free advice on a decent program which might be able to tell me which would benefit from the overclock most, would be appreciated.. or any sound intermediate overclocking advice ;) cheers Stilton
  25. +1 for freetrack and +1 for BIS for allowing the thread and +1 for staying on topic so far.. unless threads already got deleted, in which case +1 for moderation :D
