Does Arma 2 run faster with NVIDIA or AMD cards?
Kubicide replied to salad's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Bad info here... Something must have been wrong with your AMD setup. The 6970s CrossFired run great. Game runs perfectly smooth with absolutely no stutters or pauses. Tried some 3GB 580s and they were indeed very fast but had major micro-stutters and sometimes stalled / slowed requiring the infamous need to "shift - flush" after 30-40 minutes. Nvidia cards seem to have had this problem since the first ArmA release - I know from first hand frustration (remember the ALT-TAB thing?). AMD hasn't had this issue since around the release of their VPU feature - not sure if this is a factor or was a coincidence. AMD 6970s work very well with ArmA:OA, ArmA 2 and Armed Assault, and so does the 5870 or 6970 CrossFire setup. -
Memory Speeds Are Important?
Kubicide replied to Premises187's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
 ??? Installing the game on an SSD can make a huge difference in feeding textures to video cards faster. Net result is increased FPS. -
Plz help 6870 crossfire ARMA 2 OA Bad FPS
Kubicide replied to 4958stanton's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Crossfire working great here - no issues. Smooth, no anomolies or glitches. Using Cat 10.8's still. Have to wonder if the CPU is affecting some folks. I noticed quite a big jump in performance going from <3Ghz to >3.3Ghz... -
ARMA 2: OA beta build 73643

Yep, path is fine. But I'll try the newer/newest beta and reply... Edit: doh! had a typo in the path. Corrected and all is well. Thanks! -
ARMA 2: OA beta build 73643
Kubicide replied to tonygrunt's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
Anyone else have start-up problem running crossfire with this beta? Other betas have been fine, but when I launch this one I get the old weird texture thing with no text and just odd colored boxes. Have to use Task Manager to end or close app. -
ARMA2:OA runs a very low fps in Zargabad, and GPU usage is less then 50%
Kubicide replied to msy's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Try turning the view distance down - 2500M with (your) CPU isn't going to be smooth. -
Patch is working really well - much, much better than 71900 and the release exe. Multiplayer games are more fluid with far less stutter and desync issues. Crossfire is now making a major difference whereas it didn't help in the 71900 and release 1.52 version. System specs below... Keep it up BIS! This beta makes OA feel like Arma2 prior to 1.7!

A2 no longer benefits from 5870 crossfire
Kubicide replied to node_runner's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Hmm... I definitely see an increase with two 5870's versus one. Using 9.12HF with i7 @ 3.6GHz. ArmA2 can actually max out both GPUs at times according to GPUZ. Try using the training level for consistancy between tests. With one card ArmA2 can max out one GPU real fast; with Xfire enabled I need to crank up the AA in a thick forest for both GPUs to max out. (Oh ya, certain effects really come alive with Xfire enabled such as blasts in the distance - very realistic fast motion in the initial blast!) What I do notice is during MP at some servers I have very poor frames - decent ping ~70 or less but real lousy FPS. Yet other servers with similar ping are very fast and same FPS as running SP or training. Suspect there may be some sort of frame-lock or limit to keep MP gameplay 'even' when the server has issues or limited bandwidth, maybe? Something definately changes the FPS depending on the server... -
Ati 4870x2 not working poperly.
Kubicide replied to Breguinho's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Breguinho - It's a single 4870x2. I don't have fraps loaded but can say that I'm definately impacted by the server I choose. With some the fps is real fast like single player/training. Other servers are dog slow; ping is good but the frames are slow and the game is choppy. Is CrossFire kicking in for you? Did you turn on the CCC indicator to verify? (BTW how did you disable xFire or do you have 2x cards?) -
Ati 4870x2 not working poperly.
Kubicide replied to Breguinho's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Well, the 4870x2 (CrossFire) and Cat 9.11's works great here: Win 7 retail, i7 O/C, 6 gig ram... Game settings: all high except memory @ very high, AA @ normal and the processing on low. I'm picky about having smooth decent frame rates, and this combo is working well. One thing I noticed was a great improvement going to 3.3GHz from the stock 2.6GHz speed - eliminated all stuttering and slowness while increasing FPS. Oh ya, the SSD drive really helps solve the texture loading/drawing/popping issue. -
Blurred game and menu bars
Kubicide replied to commander jao's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
If you have an ATI card it is the CC panel setting set to performance - change to "balanced". -
Yes, I had a 280 OCX and it was fast. Much better than the 8800 Ultra it was going to replace. But, all Nvidia's I have tried crash with ArmA. Now have a 4870X2 and it is the fastest of them all - running in crossfire mode with all settings highest except post process (the effects I don't like). Oh, and absolutely no crashes! Fantastic.
-
Add another confirmation that the freeze is related to Nvidia hardware or drivers. Just changed over to a 4870X2 and no more problems. Had a 280 and 8800Ultra before that - both would randomly freeze ever since the 1.14 patch. Before that it was the annoying 8007000 or whatever crash introduced with 1.07/1.08 patch. Always suspected it was Nvidia related and this confirms it for my setup. No fanboy-ism. I could care less who has the better card. Just want to have the best ArmA experience.

My  two cents: Was running ArmA @ 1920x1200 with an 8800 Ultra most settings at high. Tried a 4870 and had lousy performance - very choppy with low fps even with normal settings. Then tried a 4870x2 and had worse performance than using the 8800. Finally, put a 280 in and it performs! Much faster than the 8800 Ultra. Haven't spent time trying to determine actual increase but it "feels" twice as fast with everything now at very high except AA (normal) and postprocess (low). And no more slow downs when staring at forests, scope sights, etc. Very happy now... Same thing happened with MS Flight Sim 9 and FSX - both apps improved alot; running 1920x1200@32bit measured 30-40% increase in fps using shift-x. The 4870's both ran poorly and far less than the 8800. But the audio had no occassional stutter when running the ATI cards - seems to be an Nvidia thing. Certain apps get along better with the Nvidia architechure, and I'd say ArmA is one that benefits more from Nvidia than ATI cards. (Hope the NV texture bug is gone. Haven't seen a crash yet.)

Head's up on the 4870x2: I just returned mine as it was dang slow and choppy compared to my 8800Ultra. We're talking about 20-25% slower frames, and choppy. Also had bad occasional interlace artifacts from the permanently enabled CrossFire on the x2. Was really hoping it would cure my woes with Nvidia and Arma but no... UPDATED: Got another 4780X2 and now have it working properly with ArmA. MultiGPU wasn't being enabled before - now it is, and it smokes! Also tried an overclocked 280 which still locked up at random times thanks to the 1.14 patch. But the 4870X2 is far better than both the Ultra and 280: no lock ups (so far), no Nvidia fog, no slow downs near trees, etc. Very happy now...

Anyone having trouble with the "...8007000" crash to desktop error and using an Nvidia 8800, try the 158.19 older BETA drivers. They can be found on the Nvidia website. I've had this CTD bad ever since the 1.08 patch, and it's now gone after installing this driver version. Fog bug also disappeared or was dramatically reduced, and no more stutter when zooming in optics. (BIS states that memory changes were made in 1.08, and I was curious about what Nvidia was doing with memory addressing or allocation in their drivers. From driver 158.22 onwards Nvidia turns their "turbocache" on which uses 64MB virtual memory along with the VRAM. Really don't know why they do this on cards with 768MB local VRAM. Couldn't find out how to turn this off with any registry switches in newer drivers to see if this was a factor with ArmA. But the 158.19 build is the last I could identify where the turbo is off for 8800's.) Interested to have others try it and report back. Remember to manually delete any of the newer drivers that remain AFTER uninstalling - I found two in the Windows folder. RK

1.05 was the last version free of the infamous 8007000 error. 1.09 still randomly crashes and LOD changes look terrible for us Nvidia users (except for the fog bug fix). Not sure why whatever was done from after 1.05 can't be "rolled back". Dev's should simply look back at the forum archives to see when this error first became an epidemic. The poll is erroneous IMO since many people probably never tried 1.05, and therefore have no idea idea whether it is or was more stable than what they have tried. (Also see this post as a bad sign that the problem will not be fixed in ArmA...)

>> Nvidia Crash To Desktop Possible Solution <<
Kubicide replied to Kubicide's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Update: haven't had ANY CTD's this week which is good news. Have played a variety of servers and missions - even the IC-ArmA match last weekend - with zero problems. The 158.19's are working very well! Suggest anyone with an 8800 and Windows XP having the 8007000 crash try these drivers out. Good luck! -

Binkster - 163.44 didn't work for my 8800. Neither did any of the other "fixes" including the -maxmem. This has been a real pain as before patch 1.08 everything was fine. And other apps did not crash with the newer Nvidia drivers. Oh well... It's working for now... RK -
>> Nvidia Crash To Desktop Possible Solution <<
Kubicide replied to Kubicide's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Chaos - yep, those are the drivers. Since reporting I was able to crash once by ALT+TAB'ing numerous times (like 10+). But that has been it. No crashes in game otherwise... Keeping fingers crossed... RK -
Another Update: The 7950 ended up CTD'd after a second day of use. Seems as though it would run longer before the first crash but still ended up unstable. Have reinstalled updated drivers once again with the 8800 and will continue to research. Tried an extension setting in the Nvidia CP but it's too early to say whether this has any effect. Reinstalled ArmA and stopped at 1.05. Interesting to note the video memory usage was much lower initially than with 1.08 (which I updated to again later). Memory would only climb to ~150 megs and stop by the time the game menu appeared. With 1.08 memory climbs >200 megs more to 350 or 450 megs! Also interesting to note that both the 7950 and 8800 were crashing when the reported (virtual?) video memory was about the same at ~700 megs. BTW patch 1.05 was stable with no CTD's; zooming the optics was also quick. Unfortunately, only 2 or 3 servers are actually running this version these days!

BIS - this game worked fine until after 1.08. Now I get constant CTD at random. Yes, it could be the Evolution missions since they are so popular but I doubt it as this happens with other missions. Specs: 6600 Intel Dual Core Intel BX2 mainboard 4 GB ram (<<< is this an issue? - I notice the /3GB switch cause ArmA to lock when used) Creative Xfi 8800 GTX (162.18 currently) This game worked absolutely fine; solid; until around 1.05 then I started to experience CTD's. Nothing has changed on this gaimg machine. Really becoming a frustrating thing as I used to have a good time when I bought the game - now it sux. Yes, I've tried all the recommendations and fixes listed in the forums. Some work for awhile then teh CTD will reappear. No AV is running; I'm not a nube at PC's; other apps are stable as a rock. It is just this game and only this game that has changed since the 1.08 patch and beyond. I can go back and load the older version and have a stable game. It is definately seomthing related to the 1.08 and memory errors. Please don't say it is Nvidia's fault as their drivers are working with other sims and games. Doubt it is an 8800 issue as IT WORKED BEFORE 1.08 just fine...

(Just an FYI this made no difference for my machine. Tried it last week and still had random CTD's.)

trying to prevent ArmAs crashes for 6 weeks now
Kubicide replied to menos's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Menos - can you try out NVTray and monitor your memory when the app CTD's? Curious to see what happens on your machine. See my thread on "BIS - Please Fix ..." as I'm struggling with CTD's with an 8800. And I notice that the app crashes BEFORE maxing out - somewhere around 700 megabytes. I had a 7950 512 meg card installed but it too crashed around 680-700 meg. Hope BIS - or Nvidia - finds a solution. Everything worked great prior to 1.08. -
How is this offensive? ArmA worked fine with the 8800 prior to patch 1.08, and I am asking for input or help from BIS and others. Isn't this the purpose of this board and forum? Geez... It would be great to have a reply from the developer since there are many of us ArmA + 8800 owners that are struggling with this problem. If BIS said it was an 8800 thing and won't be fixed then great, I'll move forward with selling the 8800 and getting something that is compatible since I enjoy the game! If BIS said it's definately going to be corrected by new drivers then I'll wait. Right now I can only point the fault to the game since IT WORKED BEFORE 1.08 just as many others have stated. (Please only reply if you have something constructive to add - thanks.)
