That's the problem right there. We (EU) think in terms of power through dialogue and economic cooperation, while Russia thinks in power through force of arms and intimidation. Whether it's to achieve short term goals like public support for Putin (nationalism and patriotism as political tools actually work in a country were most of the media is state-owned or at the very least state-controlled) or actual control over strategic territory and resources. Nationalism and patriotism are things we Europeans generally only see in football matches but more as a joke on the other side and during election campaigns of marginalized extreme right- and left wing parties. That's why making deals with Russia under the current regime is impossible, they live in a different world in terms of mentality and world views. The politicians are only fooling themselves and therefore us by telling us that Europe is more stable than before because we are no longer enemies which clearly is incorrect. Any European leader that would use a similar attitude towards countries outside the EU would be forced to resign immediately through demonstrations, made powerless by an uncooperative parliament or have their party decimated in the next elections. It's a totally different approach to diplomacy, one that is incompatible with our own. Sadly a more powerful stance towards Russia wouldn't go down well with the electorate so no politician will risk their career on it.

70% of the Russian export is comprised of oil and gas. 50% of the annual Federal budget comes from exporting these substances. We can get oil from the Middle East and temporarily increase gas production from our own sources. Would Russia be able to sell their oil and gas to another buyer like the Chinese for the same price as they sell it to us? I very much doubt it. With the winter being unusually mild we wouldn't notice the effects until at least autumn 2014. Over 6 months of vastly reduced export will cause budgetary problems for them next year. We can put on an extra sweater if we haven't got enough gas to heat our homes, but the Russians won't have the money for large parts of the operating of their government and country. Unlike the Russians, most of our export and economic cooperation with Russia consists of investments, production and sales of consumer goods. Russia is looking to seize foreign assets in case of sanctions by western countries. This will make any large company and major economy think twice about investing in Russia (like in Venezuela were the socialist government seized and/or nationalized a lot of multinationals scaring away investors and look where that got them). They'd be shooting themselves in the foot all for a bit of nationalism and the hope of electoral gain for Putin. If our leaders had the guts to implement actual heavy sanctions Putin's scheme would backfire as I doubt the Russians would thank him for their government- and public services being unavailable when they next visit a voting booth.

I've tried about two dozen links and they all work just fine. Except for a temporary error on the server (which it does occasionally) the only known non-functioning links is from years ago when we had two separate FTP servers. We ceased using "FTP #2" so those links no longer work. Use FTP #1 as guziczek101 pointed out for those files. There are thousands of pages referencing to FTP #2 and they'd all have to be changed by hand and I'm not that crazy so just telling people a few times a year not to use those links is more economical :D And as I've said before I can't fix server errors. File downloads are tested when news is posted to make sure that the file isn't corrupt and the filename is correct. If it worked at the time it was posted it should still work. If it doesn't then it is a server error and I can't do anything about it, only Jerry Hopper can.

Does Czech Repoblic for Dictatorship rather then Democracy?
JdB replied to Nachliel's topic in OFFTOPIC
A lot of good looking girls from Eastern Europe are working in brothels and/or porn in Western Europe either voluntarily or against their will (or working in hotels in Eastern Europe to service fat businessmen to pay for their education which the state used to provide), educated people doing the simplest jobs here for a 1/3 of the minimum wage, old people living in shacks with nothing to eat that freeze to death during the winter because of inadequate pensions because it was assumed the state would always provide etc. They were pushed onto the trapeze rope without a safety net. Socialism, communism and all other totalitarian regimes (which dictatorships always are) are far inferior to democracy, even with all of it's faults. -

Downloaded in Ubuntu, didn't have any of the problems described here, no pop-ups or prompts. I'm uploading a mirror for OFPr.info now. It's going to take more than three hours though ...

And besides the "national security" side of their business model they harvest and use data on a far greater level than the NSA. The NSA keeps track of metadata and use it to determine who needs their special attention, these companies use every scrap of personal info from everything everyone does to make money. I find that a lot more shameful than using data to keep the country and you allies safe and to gain the upper hand in the political, military and economical struggle with other powers which could at least be explained as somewhat beneficial to everyone in the country and not just the happy few. Ironic to see the Chinese, Russians, Germans and French (among others) crying about data-mining to their constituency when they do the exact same thing and far worse. In the US the only prisoners outside of the legal system are on Guantanamo Bay (which many Americans want to close), the Russians and Chinese have entire prison colonies in remote areas for enemies of the state. I'm a lot more concerned for the well-being of the inhabitants of those countries and the (effects of the) intelligence efforts those regimes unleash on their own people. Not much protesting going on against these dictatorships. Then again protesting against them might get you into serious trouble where protesting the US intelligence agencies' modus operandi will at the very worst get your name put on a list of potential terrorists and your phone + internet monitored which still wouldn't matter unless you try to actually hurt people. Print a poster the government for some reason doesn't like in China or Russia and you disappear or you get murdered in a "failed robbery attempt". The only people that need to be concerned about being monitored are the people that should be getting monitored for the sake of every person going about their daily lives. (Potential) terrorists, criminals etc. The one thing I am concerned about is the use of data collected by intelligence agencies being passed on to corporations to gain an edge over foreign competitors, but that is just as much the fault of the general public's attitude towards these multinationals like those mentioned by Sudayev.

Kingdom Come: a realistic RPG by the former creators of Mafia and Arma
JdB replied to sparks50's topic in OFFTOPIC - Games & Gaming
I doubt it. It's still a bit of a niche game compared to the genre that is referenced by the developers. That of the fantasy middle ages with dragons and wizards that really makes a killing in the charts. As for the game I was going to post this earlier but thought I shouldn't come off as negative too early on in the thread ... If something looks/sounds too good to be true in my experience it is likely to disappoint. They've been doing this with a team of 25-35 people and are hoping to expand to about 70. That's the same number of people that worked on ArmA2 and 3. ArmA2 took quite a while to really become good post-release imo, ArmA3 has quite some quirks and missing content as well so far. This developer has already said that a gradual release is planned which really is a good decision to let people know well in advance. But sadly stability and functionality of a game of this scope and ambition is not guaranteed by a gradual release at all. I love this type of game and so I hope for the best but I'm not quite handing out my personal "Game of the Year" award just yet ... :confused_o: -
"Finished" texturing the AA-12 (I have one or two more small bits to do that I forgot :o).

Why isn't Operation Flashpoint featured on Armaholic?
JdB replied to ko1134's topic in SQUADS AND FANPAGES
Actually some addons are released every month, but unfortunately I can't post links to downloads any more and so posting news that lost much of it's value too, in addition to having to do other things as well and the server owner (Jerry Hopper) not having been seen in many months. I've always wondered how much the total size of the files on OFP.info is. Back in 2003 Cervo told me it was around 25GB ... -
Why isn't Operation Flashpoint featured on Armaholic?
JdB replied to ko1134's topic in SQUADS AND FANPAGES
What Foxhound means is that Operation Flashpoint isn't featured on Armaholic because there is no team around to maintain that (potential) part of the site. If there is a demand + available staff that actively works on a game it might have a chance of being featured. -
Thanks for everything gents!

Not calling it a "clan". ArmA groups are generally called "squads". Presumably because "clan" was said to refer to a group of loners rather than team players. And it's got nothing to do with the military unlike "squads". Whether or not it attracts the wrong type of person remains to be seen. Stick to your own time zone (give or take an hour or two) so you can be sure that many are able to attend. Screen the people that apply. Enter their nickname in Google. I did that while handling the application process for people applying to mods and in many cases it gave some insight into their history. If someone has a peculiar nick and was caught cheating, causing fights or otherwise being a negative influence it might be better to keep them out. Clearly define what kind of squad you are. Are you full-on realism, after realism but with a good amount of fun thrown in the mix and not adhering to a strict rank and discipline system, are you fine with whatever happens as long as it's fun etc. Find people that agree with this so you don't get the squad taken away from you because most people disagree with the focus and try to lock you out, or find people you like and determine the kind of gameplay that you are after together. Make a set of rules for interacting with each other, behaviour in public (especially towards other squads), consequences of cheating etc. Determine the requirements to join. Things like age, time zone, requiring a headset (or not) etc.

The scripts themselves may be sold if you wrote them all by yourself the same as with other content that has not been edited in tools made by BIS or using technology and/or content that they have a copyright on. Having said that I don't know to what extent the community tools designed to package and compress pbo files and the content in them (models, textures etc) are based on BIS' own code that makes their tools function. So even if "you" aren't using BIS' own tools does not necessarily mean that you aren't using their technology. Only BIS can clarify what the copyright/legal stance on that is and if they consider packaging and compression to be a part of the "ANY COMMERCIAL USE IS PROHIBITED WITHOUT PERMISSION" restriction. As those specific tools are included with the rest of their tools I would say that any pbo meant for a game by BIS is subject to those restrictions regardless of the content including scripts. Only the script made in notepad++ may be sold, as textures made in Photoshop and models in 3DS may be sold as well. Basically with content for BIS's games you own the visual/audible creation/code and idea for it (unless based on BIS' samples), but not always the means in which it is packaged. https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/End_User_License_Agreement_for_BI%27s_Tools

Chernarus and Utes are the maps that come with ArmA2 so you need to contact BIS, not the BIS artists that created the islands. Maybe you have sent the e-mail to the wrong address, or they have not had time to respond yet.

Landing Craft Assault is updated to v1.05. Sadly the only difference with v1.0 is that the texture now looks better. The vehicle can be shot through most parts without taking damage and the passengers as well cannot be hit. I've copied parts from the Higgins, tried tutorials and searched forums but it just refuses to work which is why this will be my last addon requiring a geo and/or fire geo lod from me. It's just too much trial, error and frustration. [Download JdB Landing Craft Assault] (v1.05)

You mean so you can set in the mission editor which flag should be displayed?

Haven't had much time or motivation to work because of AMAR and some other issues. Only just now finished the AA12 model. I'll also try to push out the LCA 1.1 update that I had forgotten about after my technical difficulties some time this week. The differences consist of a more gritty texture (now looks more worn than 1.0) and getting the fire geo lod to work properly for the cargo area which I still need to figure out.
