Just in case anyone thought there were no interesting scripting opportunities for Soviet addons, theres an interesting article in this months AirForces monthly on several of the more obscure specialised Mi-8 variants. These include command posts, airborne and airmobile (i.e. ground based CPs that are built around a specially equipped and fitted helicopter which can then fly at ultra low level towards the FEBA to maintain effective command contact with highly mobile forces.Image here There were also two minelaying versions: Info here As well as several airborne jamming and ECM platforms which I feel offer tremendous potential to deepen OFP gameplay (not least very interesting destroy the jammer network to re-enable BAS/COC scripted effects such as CAS artillery and airlift support.) The JASDF is a fairly new operator, the contract was signed to license build AH-64Js after OH-1 production commenced (the OH-1 had been entered agains the apache for the attack helicopter contract, having already won the recce contract)

I concur the model is great. However after some dissimalar air combat training and a few AG exercises I found the following weaknesses. 1. In A to A combat the Falcon's Missiles are not up to the latest proximity detonation standard therefore are little better equipped than a guns only fighter. 2. The absence of any guided missiles for AG work makes the Falcon fairly useless against SAM defended areas (i.e. SA-2, Tunguska ,SA-11), it makes the addon of fairly ltd use for strike missions, unless the mission maker likes hellishly difficult odds all the time. 3. Although the lack of stability was a major critiscism of previous Vit addons the current F-16 is a bit too stable which is great for bombing lightly defended targets but the lack of inherent instability increases vulnerability to ground and air attack. 4.The Jammer isnt particularly effective. In trials I used the same bombing run with the following aircraft against an AD position feauring both missiles and heavy and light guns. I have ranked the results in descending order of merit: Speed: F/A-18C, Tornado(RAF) , F-4E (FM)+ F-16, Harrier FRS.1, A-10 Manouvreability:Harrier Frs1, A-10, F/A-18, F-4, Tornado,F-16C Survivability: F/A-18, Tornado+F-4E, Harrier (marginally ahead), F-16C, A-10 Stability and Targeting:Tornado, F-16, Frs1, A-10, Phantom Otherwise its a Sweet addon and like the great Footmunch Vits filling a gap in the market that no one else has touched. Lets face it anyone could fine tune the config and replace some of the scripts...its a good core model, and a good cpp.

I cant get the ECP, or any other mod for that matter to work from my 1.94 shortcut.

Small democracy needs assistance

I can't retexture but as I said I put it here because I'm trying to encourage someone else to, this is the place to request addons. -
Free Nogovan Journal 26/0ct/2003 Jaroslav Pirtovski Foreign affairs correspondent Nogova was abuzz with foreign security personell today as the Foreign affairs minister Piotr Kandinsky convened an emergency summit on behalf of the Embattled Indian ocean republic of Tonal. Delegates ranged from foreign diplomats and international aid organisations to military chiefs and Defense industry personnel. The aim of the four day conference is to establish a joint commitee to report to the Respective govenrments of America, France, Canada, Latvia, Poland, Everon, Nogova, Ireland and Finland on the possibility of Stabilising the chaotic republic. The small Island group is a key stepping stone to continental africa for smugglers, and rebels; a role made possible by large scale insurgency on the Tonalis themselves. Some sources estiamet that well over 40% of the Island group are unde rthe defacto control of various non government factions. Minister Kandinsky today assured Nogovans that no delegate country would act directly without direct UN authorisation, these statements were made in response to allegations of western backed mercenaries operating in the Tonalis raised to the UN by Zimbabwe. The Delegates did however discuss direct military aid to the struggling government forces. According to sources at the conference proceedings are underway to supply the Tonal defence force (TDF) with a number of light helicopters and aircraft, the models suggested are all civilian vehicles donated by commercial organisations therefore avoiding intergovernmental wrangles. One company in particular, Gastovski Aerospace of Arlington Virignia has already offered three Bell 206 jet rangers, two MD-500s (allegedly armed) and a single twin engined Piper Chieftain utility plain. Pro rebel leaders have expressed outrage at a plan to also deliver two OV-10 Bronco attack aircraft operated by an unamed European defence research company. Todays proceedings are expected to conclude with a fulll press brieifing.

At the moment I'm just fishing for ideas, the general idea was for someone to kick up a debate over it, and maybe put together all the types in a Tonal liveried pack. But basically yes I was thinking of a campaign, not sure about a few issues yet so I'm posting in the addons discussion section first. The very simple reason being the number one turnoff for missions and campaigns are addons you don't ahve and maybe otherwise wouldn't particularly want. Hence this little effort to inspire a fairly universal addon set and to just keep up the universe created by BAS when they wrote their detailed Tonal history. Long story short if enough people said hey yeah these are great addon ideas I might just use them in Tonal missions then I would spend some of my precious free time on a campaign involving them. -
Sigma: Welcome to the I want Leopard 2s for my country club The sad thing is that while a country like Ireland could afford MBTs but wont purchase them because attaining new capabilities makes the bean counters fearful of being expected to pay for more new capabilities Whereas Canada would have simply been sustaining what is still an essential warfighting and peacekeeping capability (for nexxt to nothing if the CF had acquired some of the surplus Bundeswehr 2A4s) Have just downloaded the Leopards, and am redownloading the apcs, expect to see a large canadian intervention force on Tonal soon.

Its a very good background indeed, I like the way you've worked the tie ins, it allows for a lot of other mods to be used in conjunction with the opfor pack. I wonder will the rebels ever get a powerful backer and form a better armed mini state, hmmm Mig-17 eh?

Thank you Denorc, OFP just got better

Any chance of an alternate hosting site/I cant dap from OFPinfo, ergo I cant d/l cos my connections too unreliable to d/l witout an d/l manager.

I think maybe the real life positioning should have the defining vote, presumably a combat model who's actually wearing the helmet will be included.

This pack is without doubt the single most important released for OFP, bar none. The key to this is the campaign, its not only excellently scripted but it has spawned a large number of follow up ideas in the community; essentially it has created the first universal non BIS storyline. In the past few weeks people have been asking for other addon makers to create Tonal themed addons to expand and enrich its world, I've no doubt that there will be other Tonal Campaigns released based around the addition of other addons (BAS or non BAS) but following a logical continuity of the basic Tonal background. Also as a many years FAL user I have to say the new JAM FN is amazing, as is HD, for the first time automatic weapons are reacting realistically, its been an Ironic failing of OFP mgs that they tend to be too accurate to be effective in their intended role. In fact given the flame level in this thread and the continuation of blood feuds, I suggest that a seperate thread be established for the bandying about of Tonal related, story, addon and mission ideas. GJ BAS but try not to let the power go to your heads (its hard to be adulated but not arrogant, you've managed thus far so you might as well hold on to your humility.)
-
They look very snappy indeed, I hope we'll see co-operation with BaconBomb and RHS on this, since its a high quality independent project I don't see why you couldn't provide models etc to their mods, or rather co-operate to release one universal Russian pack. This kind of co-operation between addon makers would do much to increase mission compatibility.
-
So we meet again Mr. Dermax.

With regards to the democracy campaign only one of the missions required me to endmission, in that case the parameters where too narrow for the player to find their way out once the AI evac crew get killed (hint don't let them die) THe BMP error happened as well I restarted the mission loaded and played as normal, the only thing I can say about the democracy campaign is an updated version with more addons would be wonderful.

Perhaps we will see the birth of a Footmunch Studio's? Since so many ppl are so passionately invested in ur planes.

I'm sure the kind folks at radishville will help.

FM,, the as far as I know Air to Air rockets used impact warheads and as such were treated essentially as very large fast cannon rounds, I'm unaware of proximity detonation technology being used on them, although I believe rocket based SA weapons using crude proximate detonations were developed and deployed at some stage in world war two. Could you fit proximity fuses to all future AAMs tho as it makes dogfighting so much more entertaining.

Even the poorest countries have one well equipped unit usually for internal suppression, I never said use his weapons just the models. Nogova is not a third world country, and if you look up the police and military/paramilitary forces of any second world country you'll find a small quite modern looking force.

OA-10As are indeed used for CSAR and FAC, there is no other fixed wing aircraft in the USAF inventory that is really suitable for these roles. It's loved by its pilots by the rapid reaction forces it supports and hated by procurement and development officers because its too cheap and durable therefore it puts a significant dent in the workings of the whole military industrial complex. Its like the way your family's first TV lasted 25 years but now you have to buy a new one every five, because durable consumer goods are bad for businesses centred on mass production and consumption, the same wasteful logic (lets not forget that money value is essentially a figment of our collective imaginations) is applied to the defence industry. I love it, how people can make the equation work; "I'd rather these people die than for me to have to live in only moderate luxury", is just beyond me. BTW the previous attempts to replace the A-10 with dedicated ground attack F-16s (no Avenger so only expensive missiles could be used, higher maintenance and fuel costs) have failed miserably, although they did succeed in preventing export success for the A-10 as prospective buyers were forcefully redirected toward trhe three times as expensive Falcon or Harrier.
