1. Sigh :

    Saddam = bad guy

    You = Good guys

Bad guys = Bad because they kill and hurt innocent people.

Good guys = Good because they fight and hurt bad guys, to protect the innocent people.

Good guys who use the same means as bad guys to fight them (more effective or not) become bad guys.

A bad guys actions get condemned so automatically it's hardly necesarry to do so. A good guy who goes bad is condemned, because people trust him to be fair and just, and well 'a good guy'.

    denoir's post with a good example :

Quote[/b] ]Of course it's not ok to behead civilians. It's horrible, barbaric etc .. In short what you would expect from a terrorist.

Let me try another approach to get you to understand. Say a cop is busted for dealing drugs. Big scandal etc

Would you buy his defense if he was complaining that there are murderers out there who have comitted far worse crimes than he did and therefor he did not deserve the attention and accusations etc

Would you be more surprised if a criminal gang kills a person than if a group of cops robs a bank?

  2. No, we didnt support the league and thats why it failed.

Oh sure ban me, what about that other asshole. I can keep it civil, but if others choose not to, im not obligated to have a civil conversation with them either.

Reconmerc, stop sucking that other guys nuts and contribute to the thread, or stfu.

    Thanks for proving my point.

If someone steals from you, you don't go around killing him, you have the authorities deal with him.

If he was flaming you the mods would intervene, if they would do so now you'd both get warned (at least).

  3. RAN, do us all a favor and go eat shit and kill yourself.

Ran happens to have actually been to Africa on several occasions, he should not need to justify himself to you.

He has been to this hell hole, the Africa you said was without much genocide (saying Saddam was worse is saying just that), it's bound to anger someone with experience there.

I have heard stories about people who went to Benin, Somalia and so forth, which I believe Ran has been to as well, they have all come back as other men, give them the respect they deserve, they deserve it just as much as an American trooper in Baghdad, if not more.

America was never a part of the League of nations, certain key global players like the Us weren't in, one of the many reasons it failed.

Quote[/b] ]Why the hell would you think im a terrorist? That just stupid.

If you justify torturing prisoners with guard dogs, and sexually assaulting them. It is exactly the same as justifying the killing of Americans by terrorists, it's not a big leap in any way.

You are supposed to be the good guys, good guys don't stoop down to the level of the bad guys.

Either you start to behave like the good guys you're making yourselves out to be, or you stop pretending to be in it for the global good.

  4. Yes, the United Nations, not the United Nations of America.

It is a cooperation, and if anyone has been uncooperative to the un it's been the Us, by veto'ing everything it didn't (as the only party that was against) like.

You cannot go on one hand go on about 'the UN not working', and then go 'There would be no UN without the US'.

You are a member, the UN's problem is your problem, don't just try to use them when it suits you, and toss them aside as 'useless' when things don't go in your favour.

    You're winning :

"Oooh, this is a fun game!"

    You're losing :

"This game sucks, I'm going home, you guys suck!"

  5. Ahem : your vision, The American Wayâ„¢

Go in, stop the evil Saddam from killing and torturing people.

You cannot do this by killing and torturing people, well you can do it that way, but you'll just be doing what you went out there to stop.

Rwanda was massive genocide, millions died or mutilated, what Saddam did in those thirty years seems like an argument on a kindergarten playground by comparison.

Do not make yourself out to be the knight in shining white armor, you're only kidding yourself, or to put it better : you're just being kidded by your governement.

After 9/11 : Massive support for the US, after Bush :

Your allies disagree with you, and more people than ever would like to see you guys bleed.

I think no further explanation is necessary.

  6. Do 3/4 of africa have wmd or kill and attack on the scale saddam did?

If you really are this whole benevolent nation. You would 'give peace to Africa, where warlords buy weapons with diamonds the people have to mine, and where genocide is a real and much, much larger problem.

But, the whole world was/is largely inactive to this phenomenon, the US is not to be blamed by any means. (no sarcasm)

But why would you then go 'liberate' Iraq?

Because you're the good guys? Hardly...

I don't need to tell you that war is great for an economy (if you win, and you don't get any damage on your own territory).

Iraq was war, the army needed supplies, arms manufacturers supplied those, now they'll supply the new iraqi army too (this the iraqi's have no say in).

Quote[/b] ]Buying is cheaper than repairing everything, security, rebuilding infrastructure and everything else.

These are private firms rebuilding and repairing etc.

They, opposed to the US governement you're depicting, don't work to return home with a good feeling, they want one thing, $$$$

Who will provide it? The Iraqi population, on a longer period, most likely in oil.

I think europeans just see the US recreate mistakes they themselves have made long ago.

  7. Imperialism would mean that we would have an empire, to have an empire we would have to colonize other countries. But come june 30 we hand over power to the iraqis

Iraqi's of american choosing, so no religious fanatics (even though that would probably be democratic), America has a long and proud history of puppet regimes. So no, not literally a new star on your flag, but nonetheless quite imperialistic.

Also : imperialism is an extended form of hyper-nationalism.

Notice : Land of the freeâ„¢, Coalition of the willingâ„¢, Bringers of democracyâ„¢, Axis of evilâ„¢ and the huge public pleaser 'With God by our side...'

This is, imho a disturbing change in American foreign policy.

Furthermore, as it has been stated many times before, Saddam was a bloody oppressor, but he was one of the most stable regimes in the region. Also one of the more 'advanced' (in our eyes) nations, which is also why he used to be such a good buddy of everyone.

Saddam has people killed, tortured and so forth to stay on his cushy throne and keep sipping his vodka martini's.

Bush sends young soldiers to war, to kill, be killed (and torture people one might say, but I won't go there) with the purpose of pleasing his corporate buddies, and thus staying in power, and maybe being able to run for a second term succesfully.

This makes them about equal in my book, Iraq became target because :

    a) After the gulf war, people already know the general area Iraq is in, and that the bad guy has a mustache and is named Saddam. Thus, with the previous run-ins it was easy to make a story stick.

    b) Iraq could be taken rather easily, little power left in Saddam after years of (succesful) containment, a weakened military and a great terrain to show some pretty pictures of LGB's blowing stuff up, and Abrams's do look pretty in desert camo. Good for giving this whole war on terrorism a visual in the media, nevermind that this has nothing to do with terrorism, but if a guy's name is Ali, Mustaffa or I don't know...Saddam? He must have some kind of terrorist connection, right?

Undeniably, there are other, more brutal dictators, in other, just as unstable regions, with definite WMD's, not just 'the potential, to maybe, after a decade or so, maybe, with some luck produce a WMD''.

Iraq was, unlucky enough for them, just a perfect posterchild to try and give Bush some credibility after the fruitless war on terrorism.

Thanks for the good luck btw, it seemed to have helped, easy exam, went pretty well, thanks smile_o.gif

  8. But be real, they arent exactly comming from canada or ohio now are they?

No, there you would have other religious fanatics.

Think of militias, and the crazy people who think that Bush raving on and on about God in his speeches as the president of a free, democratic nation is a good thing.

Moral higher ground, what's that? rock.gif

Really reaaaaaally need to go now, though. sad_o.gif

  9. Theres a difference, soudis use it for punishment, saddam uses it to terrorize. Both suck but arent the same.

If you hadn't noticed (sure you did, since you know all the big media slogans by heart) Iraq is a complex region, filled with different ethnical groups.

They are not able to make peace with eachother, not now, and not under Saddam.

What did Saddam do? He kept the country together by brutal force. To keep it together, not because he got a kick out of it, at least not mainly (his offspring or his croonies are a different matter).

You cannot justify the saudi's while condemning Saddam.

    Hypocrisy.

    Example :

Quote[/b] ]Face it, the mid east is where all these bastards are comming from, they may spread themselves out but the hornets nest is in the mid east, so thats where we need to be.

You make the Middle East out to be a breeding ground for vermin.

Arrogance like that has caused you one tragedy, but seemingly some people refuse to learn.

Oh and please for the love of everything that is pure and good in the world stop using the WW2 argument.

Quote[/b] ] Truth is neither were an immenent threat to us and if they were we could have easily let you guys fight them and just fight them here instead of sending millions of soldiers over there.

Yes and have your trade partners dead, your country in ruins (instead of just ours) and be all alone in your fight.

Europe has no so called 'debt' to repay, if you go by that logic the US repayed it's debt to France by going to help in WW2.

I'll be off now, I have a sociology exam coming up, I'll come watch your prejudiced, semi-xenophobic ass being handed back to you, kicked by people much more eloquent, informed and patient than myself, but first I have to go take that exam. smile_o.gif

    *departs*

  10. It is nothing more than mass murder and anyone who disagrees with that is either sick and should have the sense beaten into them, or are of questionable character and intentions(terrorist sympathisers) and should be watched by the government.

    What is warfare then? rock.gif

Mass murder. It's not about honor, ethics or doing what is right, it is pure murder.

Killing civilians is ugly, very ugly, but it has been an integral part of warfare for god knows how long.

Terrorism is the "new" way, just look at how terrorist attacks and the coverage they get can sway the public.

If you disagree, look at the current trend in the US military.

Tanks and fighters? Being far less emphasised on. Instead of muscle power (tanks, heavy bombers, fighters, nukes etc) we've gone to a highly mobile, highly accurate force, delivering crippling blows with surgical precision. (accurate aircraft munitions, wheeled or tracked IFV's...)

We're not there yet, but it's going that way.

Having changed the way the biggest military in the world works, I'm very tempted to say it is changing today's warfare.

  11. Sorry geeks, but I dont think that the first thing this technology is applied to will be upgrading your precious computers.

Geeks, he posts on his computer, on an internet forum, filled with people he doesn't know, about a computer game he likes...

    Hypocrit! biggrin_o.gif

Quote[/b] ]It would DEFINITELY be commited to military use.

Played command and conquer lots geek boy? tounge_o.gif

(chronoshift, allied superweapon, teleport device smile_o.gif)

Quote[/b] ]Any small weak nation(like Belgium for example) with this technology would immediately have an advantage so great as to be able to beat any other nation on the globe decisively.

That was just uncalled for... sad_o.gif

True teleportation would indeed tip the scales much like nuclear weapons did.

If I understand this correctly after 24 sleepless hours, it's 'simply' the copying of the state of one atom to another atom.

Big feat, especially if you know about the complexity of an atom, a far cry from the worms teleporter though. smile_o.gif

  12. Ah yes, the eurocrat ghetto's in Belgium. biggrin_o.gif

They do live in a world of their own, nice big villa's at the towns at the edge of Brussels.

I went to school with some sons and daughters of people who work for the eu in brussels, and they're typically wealtier than the cliched doctor's or lawyers son. smile_o.gif

Of course there is corruption and self interest, but this doesn't detract too much from the things the eu can achieve (imho).

  13. First time voting, and I'll probably vote VLD (liberal).

Why you ask? Since socialists and 'Groen!' (enviromentally conscious, 'green' party) have, in my eyes been wasting money on things that go well with the public but have a detrimental effect on economy, they are exluded. Since I don't believe in parties who list their religious beliefs in their name, and am not about to vote for our cherished right winged Vlaams Blok, those are ticked off in my list and I am left with VLD.

I'm quite excited about my first time voting (note that voting is compulsory here), especially since I take an interest to politics (even though I'm hardly an authority on the subject smile_o.gif)

Also, I helped organise a political project in our school, it involved two voting rounds. One before the actual event, then another after every class had an hours worth of chatting time with a member from each major political party, and after a debate between those representatives.

I don't have the exact results on me, but the socialist party came out on top, they advertised themselves very well, sending one of their big names (Said El Khadraoui, not quite sure about the spelling) who has already served a term in the EP. Quite interesting to see how a charismatic person can sway the votes of many indecisive people very well.

  14. Jinef's "participant in two wars taht brought great destruction to France" line (because the British ain't never done that... rock.gif )

Yeah.. I know, quoted Fspilot with little relevance actually. sad_o.gif

It was more of a late reaction to the posting of those French jokes, I just don't like how France is singled out as the target of opportunity. (Avon is probably right saying I quoted the wrong person)

A lot of other nations opposed it, a lot of other nations make jokes about the current US administration, but France is about the only country that's seemingly this hated.

What about Belgium, we opposed it too, are we of that little importance? biggrin_o.gif

Apologies FSpilot, now I unrightfully singled you out for something you most likely don't agree with yourself. Sorry sad_o.gif

  15. Brought shitloads of French freedom too.

What's with this whole 'they owed us, they should have helped us with this war on terror' attitude?

The French have no obligation to do something against their will because they somehow owe a debt to the US.

By that logic, the US was repaying France a favour (the whole help against the UK thingie back then) and then they would've been even after WW2.

It's childish to make such crude jokes about the French out of spite. Of course the reverse is america bashing and absolutely unsporting.

At least european nations take it all in good sport and retaliate with jokes of their own.

(ask Ran for some belgian jokes if you want biggrin_o.gif )

But this is just bashing the French because they wouldn't help you on your war on terror, boohoo.

Joking about the French cowards doesn't do the Resistance of old, or the modern French soldiers posted all over the world any justice.

The whole world is taking the piss on the current US with all kinds of jokes, it's unfair to just single out France imho. smile_o.gif

  16. Another intriguing aspect of Dune is the concept of the Mentat.

I always saw them as 'living computers' ( i believe they were presented as such in the book as well) in the sense that they'd calculate the succes rate of every possibility and then proceed to take the safest one/ the one with the most desireable outcome. Kind of like an AI does I think.

The Bene Gesserit manipulating people was very fun to read, IIRC Lady Jesica (sp?) used this to move about the Fremen when she hid among them with Paul.

This is a great example of how 'simple' knowledge about other beliefs and religions can greatly benefit in politics or warfare.

Something the South Korean army has somehow understood, while the US (governement of course *dodges flames*) has largely failed to in their blind fanaticism.

  17. I acknowledge that, as much as you try to see it from anothers perspective it is really really hard.

However, I do not blindly label them terrorists, their goals aren't that hard to understand and (sort of) respect a bit.

(I feel like I'm walking in a minefield while typing this tounge_o.gif )

Still, the Fremen attacked the imperial Sardaukar directly, they did not (my memory on the book is very faint after the years, you can just say I'm wrong, no need for extensive quotations) attack imperial or Harkonnen citizens.

The whole analogy sticks pretty good though. smile_o.gif

  18. I applaud Miles Teg as well, as his name implies, he's quite knowledgeable about the Dune series.

His studies of cultural antropology also help in providing such a detailed analasys.

What I personally find strange however, is the fact how I view the forces in the books and in real life very differently.

Paul Atreides : a prophet, a great leader

The Fremen : admirable people fighting for a good cause

Osama Bin Laden : a man whohas not been heard of for a while, and not exactly admirable

Al Qaeda : fighting for a cause which is just in their eyes, but using the wrong means

(Though the use of atomics by the Fremen could also be debated as right or wrong)

In the light of this I'll be sure to reread everything again, especially since now I'll understand much more.

Reading it when I was 14 was educational, but when you can't understand everything it misses the point a bit. smile_o.gif

  19. Russian hardware= baby stuff/easy

U.S. hardware= how do you turn it on?/hard

    Eh?

I would presume a Russian artillery piece or a Russian jet to be using the same complex/simple procedures to operate.

You're bound to get better deals if the companies know you have alternatives, at least that is how I would act were I an arms dealer.

"Yeah, we'll sell those F15's at the original cost, even they're just a tad old and suck compared to russian alternatives."

Wasn't this whole 'liberating' thing not applicable for a free market?

I couldn't make up from your post if you were being sarcastic or not, I just assumed you weren't

  20. Gearbox made the Expansions for HL, HL was an amazing game, so HL2 will be amasing, also from what i have seen of the game from last year from a m8 it is amazing.

Ah yes, I though this was the case for Blue Shift, wasn't sure about Opposing Force. (must learn to research)

Half Life was great, but if they dare to add such sucky levels like the Xen levels I swear to god... mad_o.gif

Btw, Darklight, try hitting an arcade and looking for one of the Silent Scope games.

You can't miss it, a cabinet with a sniper rifle, a small lcd showing a constant zoomed in view in the 'scope' and a normal arcade monitor with a non zoomed view.

Best damn sniper action ever biggrin_o.gif (even though it's arcade)

That being said, I've only played it when I was visiting the UK, Belgium doesn't have many arcades sad_o.gif (not that I know of anyway)

  21. Guess what? Half-Life 3 is also being planned! So expect another cliffhanger ending!

Yay, so they can postpone everything they can't get ready to go before the set release date and just throw it in in an addon or a sequel.

"That physics engine? Ah we couldn't get it to work the way we wanted to, expect to see it in next year in HL3, or maybe even earlier *winkwink*"

HL Fans everywhere : "OMG,there might be an expansion!"

Hey, why should you push to make a good game a masterpiece when your brand name ensures you a healthy dose of sales anyway?

Don't get me wrong, I loved HL, I liked Opposing Force too, but Blue Shift?

You don't make a game anymore, you have to start a franchise with sequels and five flimsy addons per sequel, bleh.

(great, now i feel like a whining old fart again biggrin_o.gif)

That being said : Tribes Vengeance and OFP2 on comp, too much to sum up on consoles smile_o.gif

Disclaimer : Looking forward to HL2 too, but when they announce sequels when the next one doesn't even have sales figures in yet it just seems plain arrogant to me.

  22. There's a whole generation between the G36 and the M16,it's like saying the garand with such and such improvements is a better rifle than the M16. rock.gif

The improvements the M16 has undergone are done by whom? Yes H&K, the improvements are done by them.

So a rifle designed, from the ground up by H&K is bound to be better than the alternatives in the M16 family.

Because, if you could do a better job you wouldn't need them to improve your existing designs, now would you?

    Doesn't that sound logical? smile_o.gif

  23. Belgium : a tiny speck on the map, and we would rule over the UK? lol biggrin_o.gif

Quote[/b] ]Becoming a single country, thats what i'm worried about. I don't want to get ruled by the French, Germans or Belgiums.

    How things have changed?

Collapse of League of Nations (possibly more then 60 years ago, i'm not and historian)

    WW2

    War in Balkans

    Terroism

    anything else?

League of nations was a weak organisation, the eu is a streamlined, more effective evolution of it.

WW2 : inevitable with the pressure put on germany by the WW1 victors

War in Balkans : century old ethnic pressure

Terrorism : so this is all the fault of the eu? rock.gif

ps : Belgians, we don't go off calling you Englanders either biggrin_o.gif

  24. Europe isn't all butterflies and rainbows, but imho the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

Surely, all the new members can't be completely retarded can they?

They see the huge advantages for their trade and economy, and they willingly take all the buraucratic crap and regulations with it, that tells you something.

Being geographically this close to europe, and not wanting anything to do with europe is silly, only exceptions like switzerland can survive it. (especially from a trade oriented country like the UK, not being a member would make all that much more cumbersome.)

I find it strange that there's so much nationalism left in the 21st century, I'm just as proud of being a european as I am being a belgian (maybe even more).

On the euro issue, I don't have much to say, since I'm not well informed enough, but I doubt joining up would hurt the british economy, on the contrary, the UK would probably strengthen the euro by a lot.

  25. But RAR is better than ZIP. sad_o.gif

I really hate people who go bitching like this :

Quote[/b] ]WTH is this RAR thing, can't they zip it like normal people!? *censored*

    Gah!

If you can download winzip, you can download winrar, RAR offers better compression and is thus the better choice for all of us.

Being an idiot is no excuse, if you can complain on a forum you can spend five seconds on google, find winrar and download it.

Sorry,I'm just tired of seeing this happen all over the place, I wonder where all the people who explain it time and time again get their patience. smile_o.gif
