Anyone else feel a bit put off by the controls?
evil koala replied to TheUser's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
Because they wanted to make progress. It took a bit to get use to the new controls, but after a bit of playing, I find I like them more than OFP.. And for the helicopters.. ArmA is FAR better than OFP. -
I was wondering if someone could provide a ballistic chart for the various ammunition types as programmed in game. Mainly, I'd like the info for .308. I'm attempting to use the mil-dot scope on the M24 for rangefinding and holdover on targets (since adjustments arent possible ). I'm able to calculate range just fine. But I'm unable to properly compensate for bullet drop without knowing the ballistics of the round I'm firing.
-
Could a dev maybe shine some light on this? Even if the data isnt realistic. I just want to be able to make long range one shot kills. Trial and error is proving to be quite difficult since bullet holes arent left in objects.
-
I've noticed that something is definately off.. Either the people are too short, or the sight isnt calibrated.. Probably the latter is more likely.. But when you use 55" as the height of a standing man, you can accurately calculate the range using the sight. I've already setup a target range on the runway and setup targets out to 1200m. The problem is that once you get past 4-500 meters, you cant really see your hits, and for some reason, bullets leave holes in the ground, but not on objects. This is really quite disappointing.. I hope its an oversight or something and wasnt intentionally left out

I dont seem to have a problem with it.. The flight models are definately off, but its not impossible. In fact its realistic in that you can just put your lift line on the bandit and pull.. Just as in real life, you'll bleed all your airspeed. So you have to hit and run or maintain corner speed.

Heh, I dont think people do that manually. Try this. http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html

I agree.. As long as they dont cross the line, as many other companies have. Like Ubisoft when they descided to make console games and port them to PC, rather than making PC games and porting them to console. Console gaming will be the downfall of PC gaming. Console games are just too profitable compared to PC games and they're easier to make.. Just make some shit with the same old arcade gameplay with really nice graphics and maybe one new feature and it'll make game of the year.. I just hope BIS stays true to their word about making games for themselves. But I also hope they stay in business and earn the money they deserve

Cool, I'll hop on your TS server sometime

Whats amazing is that he got a sniper to shoot at him and miss! j/k.. Nice vid

I can agree, that when hitting the ground like that should pretty much destroy anything.. The same with trucks falling off a bridge should destroy them. And he's right about the night vision too. While the game is accurate, that it takes a few seconds to adjust your eyes to see in the dark, lights should still be easily visible. With that said.. The flight model in ArmA is still far superior to OFP. And to Stealth.. What part is a joke exactly?

For those of you who like to fly low, watch the wires. The collision mesh for them go from peak to peak of the towers, and dont follow the sags. After finding this out the hard way, I took a screenshot to illustrate it. http://img45.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=97887_wires_122_341lo.JPG

Are you guys in a squad or anything? I'm looking to join a structured gameplay type of air assault squad. I enjoy simply piloting the helicopters and dropping off troops to where they need to go. I'm hoping eventually there might be something like Chillamasta's C&H missions with helicopters for transport instead of that parachute script its using now. That way there'd be a need for transport pilots.

To the people who are playing ArmA, how is it?
evil koala replied to evilnate's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
I think BIS are doing a great job on ArmA. Yes, it has its bugs and there are things that can be improved.. But I'm just happy to get a new PC game that isnt a run and gun arcade shooter or a shitty, half-assed console port. As for the things most people are complaining about.. I like the new feel. It feels like my weapon has mass and that I'm holding it in my hands. And just as it does in real life, in ArmA, it takes a second or two to line up that perfect shot. It seems to me that most people complaining of the "lag", or simulated mass, have never held or fired a weapon, and are use to twitch games like CS. And for the flight models.. I'm very glad to see BIS aiming for more realism here. The current 1.02 flight models are arcade enough so that just about anyone can fly them, but realistic enough so that you wont be doing any crazy BF2 combat maneuvers. With the right kind of pilot at the controls, realistic aircraft missions are quite possible. And last.. TrackIR support is by far, the best new feature of the game. Being an avid flight sim junkie, I wasnt sure how I was going to like it in a FPS setting.. Well.. Its awesome. Total immersion. Its completely ruined all other FPS games for me. I find myself looking around in BF2 w/Project Reality, trying to peek around corners or down ally's and streets, wondering why I'm still looking at my rifle. So far, I'm loving ArmA. Thanks BIS -
I was having the exact same problem with my X1900XT.. Then I backed out and checked my temp and it was at 80*C.

I made a vid for another thread, but it illutrates some of the points given so you can see it in action. I was getting fairly poor frame rates at some points, so its not as smooth as I usually fly.. But you can see the basics of what others have discribed above. http://www.filefactory.com/file/d6876d/ WARNING: Its 220MB and 10 minutes long.

I second this post.

I just made a video for another thread, but I figured I'd post it in here in case someone was interested in seeing it. Its 10 minutes and 230MB of me just flying realistically. No tricks or loops. Just hover-taxi to take off, NOE, masking/unmasking, engaging some targets, rearm/refuel and hover-taxi to land. http://www.filefactory.com/file/d6876d/

Its 10 minutes long, 640x480 AVI DivX encoded at 3072Kbps bit rate. No sound. Its just a sample of some more realistic flying. I was having some problems at a few points as I was only getting 15-20 fps while recording, but it goes to show the current flight model is quite usable and can provide a fairly realistic experience with the right kind of pilot at the controls.

Well show me what you can do. Â Why don't you open the editor, place a few tanks on the ground, an enemy chopper in the sky, and try to take it on without the gunner. Â Try another test. Â Place 2 camel planes on the same map, one being the player and one being the AI. Â Give the AI the waypoint to fly in a straight line, and try to "dogfight it" Â See if you succeed untill your ammo runs out and get back to me with a video of what a great pilot you are. Â I doubt you guys ever saw any real videos of choppers in "action" Â Â Â The way the guy in the cobra mission flew, simulates stupidity, no offence. EDIT: Done. http://www.filefactory.com/file/d6876d/ Uploading video now. Its 230MB though, so it'll be about an hour. I'll edit this post when its done. While it is rather difficult to aim, its not impossible and its far better than it being too easy. And the flight model is NOT realistic, but it can do its job just fine if you fly it realistically. I'd love to see a simulation quality flight model, avionics and weapons systems modeled.. But its not gonna happen. At least BIS is going in the right direction in an attempt for more realism. What they've come up with isnt perfect, but it works, is usable, and is far better than our other options (BF2, Joint Ops, etc)

EDIT: Nevermind this post, I just had the same crash again. Looks like its a bug in 1.02 and not just the sprocket version. I installed the pirated copy of the Czech CD version that I played before I bought the sprocket version and used my sprocket key. I just played an hour on a mission that use to crash every time within 5-10 minutes, and 30 minutes playing C&H on a public server. So for those of you suffering from this problem, this could at least get you playing while we wait for a patch. I wont tell you where you can aquire the CD version as I'm sure its against the rules, but I will say it can be found rather easily using a popular internet search engine.

should you be able to move and shoot in ARMA?
evil koala replied to --DST-- HIGHLANDER's topic in ARMA - GENERAL
With all the complaining going on in here, I just through I'd throw in my positive 2 cents. I think the controls are an improvement and the gameplay is better because of it. Sure there are things that can be improved on, but those issues will be resolved in time. I'm happy to see BIS taking ArmA in the direction they're currently going. Thanks EDIT: In addition.. I play cooperatively with my teammates regardless of the gamemode (except DM). So I dont see the point of a lot of the arguements here. I perfer to play against human's rather than the AI, due to the AI's hit or miss performance. But I also play the game the way I feel it was intended; as a tactical simulation, with an emphesis on realism. As others have said, if you want a run and gun, dolphin diving, bunny hopping frag fest, there are plenty of other games to choose from. Please dont take anything from what little the simulation croud is given. -
I'm have the same exact problem now with the Sprocket download version after patching to 1.02. Its become completely unplayable. I cant get through even a short mission without crashing.
