Army chief: British troops must pull out of Iraq soon

General attacks government policy that has 'exacerbated' security risks

    Richard Norton-Taylor and Tania Branigan

    Friday October 13, 2006

    The Guardian

General Sir Richard Dannatt, the head of the army, dropped a political bombshell last night by saying that Britain must withdraw from Iraq "soon" or risk serious consequences for Iraqi and British society.

In a blistering attack on Tony Blair's foreign policy, Gen Dannatt said the continuing military presence in Iraq was jeopardising British security and interests around the world.

"I don't say that the difficulties we are experiencing round the world are caused by our presence in Iraq, but undoubtedly our presence in Iraq exacerbates them," he said in comments that met with admiration from anti-war campaigners and disbelief in some parts of Westminster.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Gen Dannatt, who became chief of the general staff in August, said we should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems".

    Well, this is awkward.

  3. I think theres a simillar law that u will be jailed if you go to the street and say "jewish holocust never happend", or something like this.

    Unfortunately, yes.

    Quote[/b] ]

I think this is a good bill but jailing people is stupid. I mean sure, give them fines and take money, but jailing ? maybe for a couple of weeks but I heard in the Israeli news that they could jail you for a year . .wtf ?  huh.gif

Like most european nations, getting the maximum penalty usually requires rather extraordinaire circumstances. Personally, all the fees, fines etc. that result from a decent trial are a hell lot worse than spending a little time in some white collar summer camp. Of course the worst part here is that the goverment is setting an extremely dangerous precedent that essentially says that they are allowed to regulate thoughts of their citizens.

When I see this mentality prop up I wish we had something akin to the first amendment and a judicidial branch capable of enforcing it.

  4. Trying to hack high school advanced mathematics was pretty much impossible for me with a good teacher and many hours, some online course would seem even more far-fetched for me at least. crazy_o.gif

  5. BUZZARD @ Oct. 13 2006,00:09)]

Think of North Korea as Poland in the cold war. Poland was a "satellite" of the USSR, as is NK being China's.

I'd rather look at North Korea as being Poland in WW2... It's a possibility that China could invade North Korea thus "settle the North Korea Issue" for the whole world... But I bet China would use it just as a stepping-stone and invade South Korea next... thus incurring in hostility with the U.N. ... and paving the way for WW3...  crazy_o.gif

please, you been reading too much tom clancy, why the hell would China want to invade south korea?  there would be little benefit, China is against North Korea in this inident, well its definatly not supporting it anyway.

More like paying lip service in order not to look like total douchebags.

  6. Guess the french politicians found their own version of gay flag burners - turks. yay.gif

I am principally opposed to making idiocy illegal so I can't say that I support this.

    Quote[/b] ]

Like the Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, France is gonna turn into a country where you can be jailed for expressing their views.

There is no greater irony than a turkish official saying that.

  7. Does anyone have any official word on the languages of the localised versions ie does the czech version have the option to switch to english somewhere along the line?

I think it was stated somewhere in the release date thread that the Czech version does not feature english.

  8. granted they'd sell alot if they did ship worldwide, but I'd expect that they would have a clause restricting their ability to do so, as 505 gaming would be less than pleased if one of their 'partners' in selling armed assault were to cut into their share.

Last time I checked the publishers do not sell the games themselves. wink_o.gif

It is of note that Argentina invaded Great Britain in 1982, so having nukes is not a 100% detterent against conventional invasion.

Not if the attacker has no realistic chance of threatening the existence of the state being attacked.

    Quote[/b] ]

South Korea has a U.S. colony. It has nukes protecting it.

So I suppose chinese nukes are protecting North Korea then as well? yay.gif

    Quote[/b] ]

North Korea does not have a big history of foriegn interventions. It is surrounded by Superpowers, the U.S., China and Russia control it's borders. There is no one it can invade.

Are you kidding me? For a country of that size and economy it has been quite active, they were sponsoring the japanese red army, tried to assasinate the south korean officials numerous times (even in Burma), hijacked USS pueblo over 20km off their coast and even blew up an Korean Air airliner killing over 100 people for no real good reason.

    Quote[/b] ]

They are in a state of war and the U.S. refuses to declare peace. The U.S. was the last enemy to invade and maintains a military force on their border and regularly practises marine landings in the area.

One invasion in 1955, (or attempted liberation if you prefer), does not in anyway compare with the amount of U.S. foreign interventions.

Do you honestly think if that North Korea decided to give up this bullshit US would invade?

    Quote[/b] ]

They have every reason to be scared of U.S. military action.

They sure do for a good reason.

  10. This thread should have existed long before the Iraq thread. I laugh at the general public here (US) that are suddenly so adament at proclaiming action all the while the Iraq war it was "not important" and excuses were handed out left and right.

Actually there has been more than one North Korea thread before this one; time for an asian politics thread? yay.gif

  11. I guess everything is labeling, and there is no wrong or right, but merely how it is labeled right? I guess attacking and engaging in 3 year long war makes a country "labeled" as bad.

Or being generally a psycho bitch of a neighbor for the last 50 years:

    http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/dmz-list.htm

This list of course does not include their little terrorist activities, counterfeiting, drug smuggling, arms dealing or any other wacky sheningans.

  12. Militarily, the United States has the capability to strike nearly any target it'd like, within reason.  There's a reason we bought all of those B-2's, outfitted our submarines with cruise missiles, and still fund carrier battle groups.

but IMO the US lacks convincing infantry, they've had only one REAL test after WWII and failed it. invading NK would most probably result in a clean sweep by the Koreans

I'd say the performed reasonably well in Korean war. wink_o.gif

but I meant 'Nam wink_o.gif or do you mean that things haven't developed after the Korean war?

Thankfully enough they did not have any "real" wars after that.

  14. Quote[/b] ]

anyway, WHO exactly "agreed" they did the test? it's like the majority picking some guy they don't know off the street and say "we just decided that you suck", and everyone else buys it.

More like the neighborhood psycho getting a truck full of petrol and threatening to set the whole neighborhood in fire if they dont do as he wishes.

    Quote[/b] ]

and of course NK admits they did it. ever heard of those mid east terrorist groups competing of who actually did the latest bombing? they all claim they did it. it's just provocation.

Claiming to have the bomb and not have it would seem extremely counterintuitive to me.

  15. I thought that N Korea was sanctioned to the full already!

I recall that was considered in 1994 (North Korea said they would think that as an act of war back then) but they didnt after Carter brokered that infamous deal.

  16. k umm, ya i know what the Iraqis use that fires those rounds,

BMP-2/ BMP-1. plain and simple,i think the BMP-1 uses 30mm tho, not sure

I recommend you start reading more books and play less silly videogames if you plan on making more statements like..

    Quote[/b] ]

so close the book man, caus im right,

  17. Quote[/b] ]The Jihad against Dutch and Belgians (2003 onwards)

This one doesnt exist. Show me a war that was started by muslims against the Dutch or Belgians.

I suppose she is referring to Theo van Gogh's murder, though I still find it rather questionable calling couple of killings/dumb shit posted on the net a holy war.
