Get off my lawn! Oh wait.. GOML!
-
I don't play MP at all anymore but I used to do some co-op and a few private games and that's where your problem lies, going to mainstream public servers in the first place. If I were going to play at all I would jump in on the SimHQ nights or look into playing with the Shack Tactical folks (I even remember reading about a SimHq vs ShackTac session if I remember right), and those are just the ones easily found without searching. If you can hold off a few months until another ego shooter is released, then you will have a better time.

Vegetation replacement - support needed
ebud replied to .kju's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Well since ARMAII is a highend slideshow for me (unless I drop the settings to pre-2004 levels) while ARMAI runs smooth as silk at high/very high settings, I'd be interested in trying out a replacement pack like this. -
I just reinstalled ARMA I until I can update my hardware because after toning down the settings to get good framerates that were on par with ARMA I, the settings were so low it wasn't worth it. Now back in ARMA I I get really good framerates with really high settings. I think there is really no justification for making too many people edit configs manually to get good performance, the in-game graphic settings really aren't intuitive at all. It's as if all conventions were thrown out the window.
-
Or maybe you just ruined a nice surprise?
-
You could say this for almost the entire options menu. Almost half of it could use some conventional naming descriptions and/or explanations.

He's being a dick just to be a dick. Friggin' trolls.

bump... I'd like this explained as well.

Arma 2 vs other tactical and military shooters
ebud replied to Comet's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Never played WWIIOL but have played all the Combat Mission games. Not a lot, but played them enough to know that you can almost get as much of that out of ARMA/ARMAII (hopefully) with COC's Command Engine as you can with the Combat Mission series. Two completely different animals in reality so I don't see how you really can compare basic ARMA/ARMAII with either of those as they all serve completely different purposes. WWIIOL... where is the mission editor? Where is the offline campaign? Can I mod it to Modern Combat? Like I said I never played because after my Airwarrior days I'll never pay to play. If you want to compare other games I'd say GRAW, HD2 or even the DF series may be better. I know you are talking "Milsim" well... SBPROPE is a better tanker sim, IL2 a better prop sim, Falcon series a better jet sim, Black Shark a better heli sim... now where is the better infantry sim. I'm not looking for a better CQBOMFGDELTASPECOP sim but where is the better infantry sim? Where is the "sim" that gives you a feeling of combined arms? There isn't any I know of. -
That wasn't the point. It wasn't created to be a sim or to even try to be realistic, it was created AND FUNDED by the U.S. Army as a recruitment tool for kids to play and get interested in joining the Army. It was supposed to fun so kids would enjoy it, tell their friends to play, then go see a recruiter.
-
No, it's a free, flashy, twitchy, "fun" recruitment tool.
-
I strongly disagree. It's toned down for several reasons. Please don't kick it back up, my hearing will thank you.

Snipers with Gillie-Suit better camo values than others?
ebud replied to Mike Miller's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
I think I'll make a clown addon with .25, that'll show them :p Lol, I know you know, but why can't people get it that you can make a pink elephant and give it good camo values in the config and AI will walk right by it. It's all code, nothing to do with the model/textures. -

If they would have made the snipers more "functional" for PvP they would have made sure the far lods blended in really, really well into the landscape and not just built the model for looks. Maybe it does, TBH I haven't tested it. -
I don't want to argue with you and I don't want the game "dumbed down" I've only been able to play it a little bit and I think overall it is head and shoulders over the last iterations of the engine/game. Also the situation I keep harping about only happend once so far in ARMAII. I remember busting a myth back when Res. came out and people said the AI could see through the RES bushes so I setup a box of bushes 20mx20m and sat in the middle and had ai patrol around the box. Nothing happened. I posted pics. Nobody believed it. If someone could post a link to that test scenario so others could try it and try new ways to test theories then I think this thread would slowly fade away.
-
Walker don't be so coy, you know as well as anyone that you cannot replicate situations like he mentioned because it will never ever happen the same way twice. "Move along, nothing to see here." The AI has spider sense and you know it. I've seen the AI vid where the user spawns around then then back to the AI view to "see" what they see and are being ordered to do, but that vid only addresses a portion of the issue. I'd like to see that test done again in a more cluttered environment... at night even. I've had countless situations happen the same way as "No Use For A Name" I'm not making it up or exaggerating. It's not a showstopper, but it's been there from day1. The AI may not "cheat" as much as people might think but the one shot PK headshots at 200m though a keyhole, through a hedge still happen more than you want to admit. Edit: Also I'd like to see that same vid/mission done at distances under 200 meters in less than open spaces. An AAR playback would be perfect for this :(

To me the difference between ARMA1/2 and BF2 is like the difference between an F16 and a kite.
-
You'd think there would be some more sliders for units so something like this could be configurable for each unit :( Oh well.

Does camouflage actually work against the AI?
ebud replied to BF2_Trooper's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
Sorry I didn't elaborate. It was the first single player mission. I was playing on regular difficulty with no other skill or realism edits other than default. The town was cleared and I had just crawled near some trees/bushes to see where the APC was, there were no AI left to report me, the AI should not have seen me at all or even known or guessed exactly where I would be yet he spotted me and killed me in less than 2 seconds after I poked me head over a rise. There was grass and bushes that "should" have hidden me, but again this is nothing new, just still annoying after all these years when it happens. Before that though... the firefights were the some of the best I've ever had in a game in years. Long and drawn out, slow methodical and utterly confusing. Really fun. -

I know with optics he would see me if looking right at me, I'm dumb, but not stupid :) The fact is that an apc a 1/4 mile away driving at maybe 40 mph over if I remember right, rough terrain spotted the top part of my head within 2 seconds of my peeking over a rise in the terrain through grass and other foliage. I don't see how in RL out of the entire line of site over the entire area he just spotted me with luck. Now I still call BS on this one. Maybe it was a one time thing, but I've seen this happen for years in this engine so it's nothing new or shocking. Just more wood for the fire. -

Like some of you I've also been dealing with this engine for a looooong time, (what, 8+ years now?) and spent hundreds and hundreds of hours testing sight, sound and camo values in configs, I've made hundreds upon hundreds of view geos for foliage for both ARMA, VBS, OFP and let me tell you that it sucks because once you think you know how it all works together you see the AI do something that blows holes in whatever theory you're working on. I know how it all works together if not the exact formuals and some things just don't always work the way you think it should. It's not always a bug, but just the AI being AI and not having a persons shortcomings. I remember editing the hearing values of units vs the sound units make so that you could try and keep the AI from knowing about you when you were in a field of elephant grass, once it worked and seemed realistic it totally screwed up the AI in other situations. Unless a game is scripted you just cannot guarantee anything will happen the way you think it should every single time. <edit> but I agree the AI can spot a needle in haystack 9 out of ten times. Last night I just peeked over a hill in the first single player mission and an apc a 1/4 mile away hit me JUST as I peeked over. A real person wouldn't have seen me, especially on the move in a vehicle even with optics. -
Too bad there isn't just an exe you could DL to make it run locally :(

My co-worker dubbed it "Loading: The Game" Pretty neat though. Reminded me of Autumn War.

People have been saying this going on 8/9 years, lol.
