    ArmA or ArmA 2?

With Arma, I get anywhere from 60-120 fps on high to very high settings. With Arma 2 v1.04, I never saw anything really higher than 25fps regardless of what settings I used. I use a C2D@4.18Ghz with a GTX 260. I will give v1.05 a try but I'm not holding my breath. I gave up on Arma 2 for now because of the AI behavioral bugs and the sheer ugliness of it. I'm hoping that after all the mods and patches it will eventually resemble nothing like BIA's vision of Arma 2. I don't experience any bugs in Arma at all. But get both - both have much to offer in their own ways.

    WARMOD release

Maybe Gunter hasn't updated those downloads yet. The "full" version is "clean". Been doing a lot of experimenting with mod... Got rid of the voice mod (eva_voice?) that gives you the walkie-talkie radio sounds. Got some negative feedback on that as it makes it hard to understand what's being said. Interestingly, after I removed it, the RUG voices mod started giving errors. I tested RUG alone and I do get the occasional error message from it...."missing entries". But it does make your soldiers say some awesome things. I also had to get rid of the NWG Sight Adjustment mod as it started giving an error every time. But I wouldn't use that anyway. Probably the one mod that makes the biggest "change" is the True mod that increases engagment distance. Some effects: - enemy soldiers actually shoot at you from 800-1000m. They don't hit you but it's annoying. Not sure why they're shooting from so far away. - a UAZ with grenade launcher will treat you to "artillery barrages" from long distances - enemy vehicles and soldiers can now be extremely deadly at much longer distance (no duh!) Does anyone know the difference between TrueGamePlay-Ai-Engagment and TrueRangeAI? They're listed as separate mods at Armaholic and the page on TrueRangeAI says it has a slider the change the "engagement range". That would be a big help.

    WARMOD release

Here is a two-part gameplay movie I made using WarMod. It's just gameplay - no Hollywood choreographing - I don't know how to do that. And to be honest, I'd rather be playing than scripting. Be forewarned - there's a lot of foul language (which is awesome! ) Unfortunately, I didn't find out until afterwards that ECS defaults Terrain Detail to Low when playing MP. It's an easy fix to the settings file to change that to Very High....makes a noticeable difference. The final movies are 1280x720 with sky-high bit rates and only about 1.7GB in size. They look about exactly as what I see when I'm playing - too bad I can't upload them like that. :( As you said, WarMod is great in that it's easy to pick and choose what mods you want enabled. I'm starting from scratch enabling mods one or a few at a time and checking results. This makes it REALLY customizable. I won't recommend running WarMod with other major mods you use. I think I'm simply going to dump my old mod list, go with WarMod only, and disable any of its mods I don't want. There's a lot of great stuff in there! Will post another movie in about week with more intense action than those above.

    WARMOD release

It turns that, so far, all problems disappear if I only run the ECS and GL3 mods instead of WarMod. Also, all the missions I play work fine if none of the mods (WarMod, ECS or GL3) are used. I play MP co-op missions only. I didn't list the "content deleted" messages because they are all different depending on what mission I'm playing. But they all disappear if I'm not using WarMod. Again, using ECS and GL3, no errors at all. Sounds like I need to take a hard look at VFAI...it may not have any features that I want. Does VFAI control the AI scavenging dead bodies for weapons/mags? If so, I definitely want to turn that off. I will look into that but I've run into this problem a while ago (before WarMod) and all the AI was playable. I posted about this and there was no known reason except that hitting 0 and then 1 fixed the problem.Another odd thing...at the start of a mission using WarMod, I can't get my men to assume a Delta formation. They simply stay in a wedge formation. Simply using ECS/GL3 or no mod, they go right into a Delta formation when commanded to. Now that's odd. I will continue to do "trouble-shooting" on all this. Having a blast playing it! Battles are intense!

    WARMOD release

Well I'm not sure which mod to give credit to but the firefights are much more intense. I should have a 15-minute two-part movie up on Youtube in a couple of days. Yeah, I'm going to go thru and see what I want (or should) have enabled or disabled.

    WARMOD release

Oh, so this is something that lets you have some situational awareness? I've never seen that before. Hmm, I wonder what Gunther has to say about this. Maybe some stuff, as you say, needs to turned off. I do have some ECS stuff to shut off: - burning when close to something on fire - all the first aid and "bleeding out" stuff - and probably more I kind of like the vanilla Arma first-aid functions believe it or not! :D

    WARMOD release

I got the chance to play the WarMod for many hours yesterday and encountered many problems. Here's a list: - binoculars don't work (they come up part way and block your view) - most missions I played had a "content deleted" message - various error messages like "fuelstation or church is not an array". Errors that don't occur without the mod. - AT soldiers drop their M136s (always happens in one mission) - sometimes I can't assume command after dying. This is usually taken care of by hitting the 0 and 1 keys. - AI soldiers don't want to follow orders (maybe because these mods put them on "steroids"?) These are all things that don't occur when playing without the mod. I'll see if I can see which mod is killing the binocs. I am currently playing v1.14 Arma. Queen's Gambit is installed but I'm using the standard WarMod launch command without referencing QG. I got a lot of footage and am working on a couple of movies. The immersion using the mod is far beyond vanilla Arma.

    WARMOD release

Excellent! :bounce3: Are you going to update the download file? BTW, obviously, with the use of GL3 and maybe ECS too, the enemy is much more aggressive and from what I've read, "smarter". And then there's the increased engagement distance too. I'm getting my butt handed to me a bit trying to keep my AI mates alive and I can't put that in a movie. :D

    WARMOD release

Well, TBH, I don't think you'll be seeing much imagination in my movie. I don't choreograph - I don't even know how to!All my movies are simply gameplay movies. I do aggressively edit though. Probably about 75% of the footage gets cut out and the action sequences are kept in. But my buddies were glad that I finally was able to produce fairly long HD movies with nice transitions. I used to have to compress and shrink the living hell out of them so I could e-mail the movies to them (at 20MB or less). Now I can upload movies up to 2GB in size to Youtube. I'm actually more constrained by the 10-minute limit than the file size limit. Will post back when I have something - sometime next week. BTW, whenever I use the mod, I get the following error whenever the first bullet is fired (by anyone): You cannot play/edit this mission; it is dependent on dowloadable content that has been deleted. mbg_cartridge I've been playing at Arma v1.14. Is that okay?

    WARMOD release

Günter, I just loaded up your mod last night and it's like Arma is a whole new game. Fantastic! I think I will most likely be using your mods exclusively from now on. I constantly am making gameplay movies of my missions so, undoubtedly, I'll be posting them on Youtube as I go. I record in Fraps at 1280x800 and then edit in Corel Video Studio Pro X2 and output at 1280x720 at VERY high bit rates which I then directly upload to Youtube (as HD). When I've got a movie completed using your mod, I'll post back here. I can't wait to upload some videos using your "mod" - and yeah, I acknowledge the fact that many, many people contributed to this. One question I have...when we play WarMod, are we using the default settings that come with ECS and GL3 or are we playing with your tweaked settings for both those mods?

ArmA Crash on Win 7 x64

Gossamer, a little poking around the internets seems to point to a problem with your sound drivers even though that "texture not created" error sounded to me more like a video card driver problem. What sound card are you using? The two things suggested in this thread are to: - find and install the latest OpenAL drivers - or find newer sound drivers I don't use Windows 7 simply because Creative drivers simply aren't that good yet. @Stewy, glad you got it worked out. Yeah, anything less than v1.14 is just not ready for prime time. I have no problems at all with either 1.14 or 1.16.

    triple monitors

Yes, there's one dude who's well-known for his use of triple monitors. He posts triple-wide screenies over at Armaholic of Arma 2. He might do the same on these forums as well.I'm sure he would help you get set up - can't remember his name unfortunately.

ArmA Crash on Win 7 x64

Stewy, that B&W blocky pic has been posted on these forums countless times. I don't remember exact details but it was like running 4 or more GB of RAM with an ATI card under Windows 7. There are countless threads on the subject. As a last resort, you might want to simply try running with 2GB of RAM installed and see Arma works. If it does, at least you know it's related to the amount of RAM. I ran Arma on Win 7 with Nvidia cards with 2, 4 and 8 GB of RAM and never ran into any problems. And I run v1.14.

    Newbie Looking For Team Play

MP games are either hosted by a player or some player has set up a dedicated server. Does it really matter who's hosting? I don't think many players use the built-in voice. Most would be using TeamSpeak or Ventrilo or the like. Arma is an awesome game for teamplay but you probably won't find that on a public server. If you can hook up with an organization (I don't like using the word clan) like tacticalgamer.com or 6thsense.eu you can experience good team play. Welcome to the forums!

    Buying Arma, which version?

Get Arma Gold, install Arma and then Queen's Gambit. Patch it to v1.14. Whether you go beyond that with v1.16 is up to you. The v1.16 patch is implemented as a mod so you can play either v1.14 or v1.16 with the click of a mouse. Get an Arma Launcher utility so you can easily manage your mods setting up different profiles with different mods in them. I use ArmaLaunch v1.2 because it lets me do just that. The most important mod you'll need is a custom sound pack. Arma's vanilla sounds are simply too lame. Everyone has their favorite. My favorite is HIFIFX...this version. It makes for great battles. Beyond that, the various types of mods for Arma seem almost endless. One of my favorite mods is "AI Revive" which you can add to various missions. You'll want to snag some good co-op missions or mission packs (if you'll be playing co-op). Most missions can be considered single missions (though they may have dynamic and random elements) while some other missions (Evo, Domination) are almost like unique games within Arma. I like the SimHQ missions and am currently enjoying the RueLight mission pack - after changing the respawn to "group". The variety of missions is endless.

    What DO work??

DJ's Guide to Problem-Free Gaming (or at least very few problems) After having read gaming forums posts for years and years, here's my take on problem-free gaming. The suggestions are to minimize problems for peeps who are not PC hardware gurus and the like - not to knock certain technologies! REPEAT - not to knock certain technologies. 1. Buy the physical game - don't download it. 2. Buy the highest-performing video card you can afford. 3. Buy a single GPU video card - avoid using SLI and crossfire. 4. Buy a very high-quality power supply (as in PC Power and Cooling) 5. Don't game on a laptop. 6. Buy a NEW, recent, late-model optical drive. Some old readers can not handle certain game's copy protection. Readers only cost $20. 7. Don't run a game on an OS that didn't exist when the game came out. 8. Don't run with obscene amounts of RAM that do nothing for your gaming or even your computing experience. 9. If you're really desperate for a better gaming experience, you might even consider Nvidia over ATI...though it looks like ATI may become dominant soon. This is obviously the least important of all items in the list. Of course, all the above have been violated with complete success. They are simple suggestions for those with smaller budgets or are not "tech gurus" or are simply desperate for a good gaming experience. I've been gaming since the original Tomb Raider came out and the only significant problem I can remember running into was severe graphical anomalies and bugs in Splinter Cell 4 - simply because the game was a flaming POS and still is today - the problems were never corrected via patches.

    Arma2 - GTX295 Disaster

Your instincts are right on, Seany. And I'd take that bet any day of the week. Chances are, if your card is not getting the juice it needs, you're going to see SOME anomalous behavior - other than low performance. It's "interesting" to see so many technical solutions thrown around in many performance-related threads trying to compensate for what's plainly a problem with the game. But as stated earlier, I don't know of any other game with such ambitions view distances. Hopefully, patches will address this and so many other problems in Arma 2

    Bad things about Arma2

Actually, the most important developments in gaming relate to artificial intelligence. Maybe in 100(?) years, gamers will pay to enter a Holodeck (yes, like the one in Star Trek) and play against AI whose intelligence will, at some point, rival the human brain. Aside from that, what else is there to work on except for more realistic graphics? Yes, I'd much rather play against 13-year-olds on public servers. This whole thread is just another take on the public vs. private server situation. It's already been beaten to death. If you want to play a certain way, host your own server and play with friends who like to play the way you do. Was there ever a game that gave you more options to do that than Arma 1/2?

    Arma 1 abandoned?

At some point, I will try it, Horror. Thanks For now, I've given up playing Arma 2 and play Arma exclusively. The gameplay I experience in Arma 2 is simply...retarded - I can't find a better word. I'm not sure if the game is unbalanced or the AI is just too buggy to save their own ass. At some point in the future, I'm sure I'll get back into it and I'll be sure to load up CAA 1 as I greatly prefer the environment of Arma 1. It's a bit ironic - the concept of "abandoning" Arma 1. The gameplay is so rich I could play the game for the next five years and still be amazed at some of the stuff I'll find. For example, I just recently bumped into the Team Status Dialog script in a SimHQ mission. This has got to be one of the best mods ever released for Arma. I play alone with AI mates and it gives me the ability to manage all the soldiers on the map - not just the ones currently in my squad. And there are still countless amazing missions that will take me years to get to.

    Desert Stormers ACE

I can't find the mission after installing it in my MPMissions folder either. I checked under all the "islands".
  22. As part of my quest for better frame rates, I set Terrain Detail to very low which I read would turn off grass. I must be missing something because it didn't do anything that I could notice. And I had no change in frame rates. I average about 25 fps in most every A2 mission. I was playing the A2 mission "Cipher" and saw the option to turn Grass Off so I did it. It worked - I went from "weeds everywhere" to "billiard table" - which is what I wanted. And coincidentally, my frames jumped to the mid-60s. Am I doing something wrong? How should I be turning grass off?
  23. I first tried the setTerrainGrid 50 in the init.sqf but it did nothing. I then tried the IVD mod and using the Low setting got rid of the grass. I saw no difference between medium and high. Unfortunately, in the mission I was testing, it added only 1 to the framerate. It would seem that Arma 2 is so cpu-bound that trying to cut back on the graphics "load" is pretty much a waste of time. In the mission I mentioned above, where the frame rate increased greatly, I'm fairly sure it was a much simpler mission in terms of the number of AI. In the mission with 1 frame increase, it was a big "DEFEND BASE" style of mission.
  24. Wiper, I tried your suggestion on different enemy AI skill levels but I'm finding that in Arma 2 in general (not just your mission) that my AI mates can't find their ass with both hands. I think the problem might simply be that the don't fire enough on their own and their awareness range may be too short. You may have read a thread by Fabrizio - he is working on a mod to make the friendly AI much "smarter". It's WIP but I may simply wait until he's got something working before I take up Arma 2 again - including your excellent mission.
  25. Awesome! Thanks for all the input. I never would have guessed that. But at some point, I'm sure I would have sought out a mod that took care of this. :bounce3:
