Marc, I thought the chopper-flying was pretty much the same in both games. It felt identical to me. They probably made plane-flying easier in Arma II to prevent all the stalling that was happening in Arma. I couldn't even fly an A-10. I bought Arma II already but it's sitting on a shelf now - I'm fiddling with the demo. So far, my biggest complaint is how dark, dismal and depressing everything looks. The "darkness" of the game makes it much harder for me to acquire targets. The super-bright, washed out, tropical look in Arma was perfect for me. I'm not much in to scrub-woodlands combat.

Small arms firing from vehicles. Would you like to see it implemented?
desertjedi replied to BoxiouS's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
I'm guessing there would have to be some serious code changes to have the game calculate the trajectory of a bullet fired from a vehicle that could be going, for example, 35 mph. Think of how accurate your fire is when you're running laterally to your target. Never really hit anything? Yeah, me neither. Now decrease that accuracy by a factor of about 5 and you've probably got a good idea of the accuracy you're going to get. If the devs implemented this, I think a better name for the game would be Drunken Redneck Rampage. :D -
Thanks for the update. I never would have known.

Assuming there's nothing wrong with your system, my best guess is that your laptop simply doesn't have the performance to give good frames in Arma. I don't recognize your cpu but a Core 2 Duo running at that speed should at least get you "in the door". In other words, that's not that bad. Your "video" is extremely low-end and is most likely the problem. An HD3450 has 40 "streaming processors". An HD4870 has 800 "streaming processors" - for comparison.

My friends and I pretty much hate any kind of aimpoint (red dot) sight. Not sure about Arma 2 but in Arma it was pretty much the default sight. If I liked a mission, I would edit the default loadout or if I had to, throw a weapons crate near the initial spawn point. I greatly prefer the ACOG sight and am way more effective with it. It's interesting though to be forced to use an iron sight every now and then. You really have to pick up your game quickly when you get stuck with them upon respawn.

Tried everything but LAN server still jittery
desertjedi replied to Swartz's topic in ARMA - MULTIPLAYER
This is a known Arma dedicated server problem. According to the wiki, tweaking the MinErrorToSend variable is supposed to fix the problem. I spent quite some time on this and nothing fixed the problem - so I simply gave up on the "dedicated server" and run a hosted server. It works very well. You can see my movie of the problem here: http://www.vimeo.com/4234223 There's no way to shoot those Opfor. -
Arma Graphics Bleeding to White Screen
desertjedi replied to scrapser's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I wouldn't be so concerned about the next driver set...the 186.18s rock my world! Glad you got it sorted out. -
Was your post really meant to get help? You might want to start by posting all of your system specs.

Once again with this game performance issue
desertjedi replied to psoutrage's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Your cpu is woefully inadequate for Arma. It's an Athlon 64 X2. Your video card should be okay for Arma but TBH, a lot of peeps complain about Arma performance using the HD48xx series. -
A.I. boarding vehicles = Gayest most retarded annoying bug evaar!!
desertjedi replied to BF2_Trooper's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
ghey: a playful compliment or a derogatory description of an event, person or object. It has no homosexual connotations and its derogatory nature implies more that something is lame, stupid, unjust or just plain ‘ghey’. (from the Urban Dictionary) Bottom line..."ghey" means "lame"...not "gay". But I think Planck had the best answer. Do the AI actually get stuck? Or do they simply need to be re-ordered to get in the vehicle? I was hoping the lunacy would be ended with Arma 2...like in Arma when I order my AI mates to exit the chopper, about 50-60% of the time one or more gets stuck at the side of the chopper causing me to have to get back in, start the chopper, take off and land nearby. -
Looks like you're using the 190.38 drivers. Have you tried a different Nvidia driver, maybe the 186.18s?

Arma Graphics Bleeding to White Screen
desertjedi replied to scrapser's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Don't use the 190 series Nvidia drivers. Use 186.18. They're great - and you should be fine. -
I have two scenarios in mind (both of which have been discussed before at some point). 1. I've run into missions where, after I die and respawn as another member of the group, I'm no longer in command. I then hit the 0-1 or 1-0 key combinations and my characters says "Waiting" and I'm back in command. 2. The much more common scenario is that they're just too slow to keep up. If this is true, use the Advance command on your squad. They will keep up much better. If they get too far ahead, just hit the "fall back into formation" command. In trying out some missions I've never played before, I did run into one where my me just stood in a line and refused all commands. It was real weird - I just moved on to the next mission.
-
I would guess not - though I never actually tried. Why not do what I do and play co-op missions in Multiplayer in LAN mode if you're playing by yourself. In effect, you'll be playing SP because you're playing by yourself but with AI mates. You can play any MP co-op mission in that fashion. Some co-op missions have AI mates, some don't. The only thing I can think of that will be missing will be the TeamSwitch option where you get to choose who you respawn into.

Help getting ArmA: Gold running
desertjedi replied to <<Combatman>>'s topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Have you tried physically pulling out RAM sticks until you only have 2GB installed? Have you tried different ATI drivers? Whenever ATI comes out with a new card, I hear flakey stories that are related to drivers for the new card. But by now, the drivers should work fine with the 4890. More desperate measures that could at least get you playing: - set up a dual-boot with Win XP 32-bit - load up Win 7 RC (32-bit or 64-bit) I'm running Arma on Win 7 64-bit but am using an Nvidia card tho. - give up on XP 64-bit (but not Win 7 64-bit). It might at least get you playing. I hope someone can give you the correct solution. Others are playing Arma on XP 64-bit. It might be a combination of your card/drivers and XP 64-bit. -
Mauricio, Arma should run fine on a quad-core. 9800GT should be fine for Arma but Arma requires a very powerful cpu. I can't say for sure about Vista 64-bit but I would think it would work fine considering that Arma runs great on Win 7 64-bit. We can't answer your video card question because it's not specific enough - and we don't even know what country you're from. Also, welcome to the forums - hopefully we can convert you into another Arma addict.
-
That's totally true - if you try to launch Arma while running a quad-core cpu, your PC will immediately burst into flame! You don't need to do anything if you have a quad-core cpu to run Arma. That should be a decent card for Arma. The problem for so many peeps is that they combine that with a weak cpu and that's the kiss of death for Arma. The more posts I read, the more I think that much of Arma's poor performance on some people's PCs is more related to their cpu than their video card. I think for maximum Arma enjoyment one should use the following: Vista 64-bit 8 or 16GB of RAM Two ATI video cards in Crossfire That way, something is sure to go wrong! I'm sure there are peeps that run Arma fine in Vista 64-bit. I can't speak for Vista but Arma runs great in Windows 7 64-bit.

ARMA 2 - Seriously bad graphics for a 2009 game
desertjedi replied to chaos1986's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Honestly, because every time a PC game comes out, every forum is filled with people complaining about how bugged, how broken or simply what a POS such-and-such a game is. We see this year after year after year. The rants might have some validity if the same phenomenon didn't occur in every forum for every new PC game. Because it does, you begin to understand that this is how PC games work and expending energy whining and complaining is a complete waste. And I've been a software dev in one form or another for 22 years. So I'm sure we've both had some access and insight into the code behind Arma and have seen that it's orders of magnitude more complex than most any software developer will ever see in his/her career. And Arma 1/2 being a sim that tries to include so many aspects of military combat is far more complex than most FPSes. Once you accept the fact that this is how PC games work, you can be at peace with it. Ranting accomplishes nothing. Was that Arma or Arma 2? I ran Arma in Win 7 with 8GB of RAM and it ran flawlessly. -
Yes, it would be very cool if the "popping" stopped - especially when you look through binocs. I'm trying to put one in my business box (OCZ Vertex 30GB SSD) but it's been nothing but trouble. After only two months, it developed permanent bad sectors which effectively made it unusable - at least for various backup utilities I tried. If the replacement proves to be anything less than 100% reliable (pretty much like every other HDD I've used), I may shove it my gaming rig and see what happens with Arma and other games. A little OT but Windows 7 booting from an SSD is VERY fast.
-
For a minute, I thought you were quoting some of the reviews that have come out for Arma 2. The best way to summarize some of them is to simply use the word "broken". But that's what we've heard from many forum peeps as well about Arma 2. It will take time - just like Arma did - to fix all the problems. It's good to hear that people are playing Arma 2 in its current state and better yet that they're enjoying what BI has developed.

Need great locations for urban ops...
desertjedi replied to Kyle_K_ski's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I think the majority of buildings in Arma are "closed" though, of course, every city usually has some that are "open". I just don't think anyone's going to have that info off the top of their head. Any city is probably just as like as any other with the exception being custom maps. Since you just picked up Arma, you may not be aware but intra-building encounters is probably the weakest area of combat in Arma. I hate moving inside buildings because I constantly get stuck. Heck, sometimes I have trouble moving through a simple archway. Why are thinking of using open buildings - just curious? If you're thinking CQB, you can forget it - that gets really ugly in Arma. There is a mod out there I just read about that changes the soldier's collision model (or whatever) but it seemed to be exploitable (seeing/shooting through walls IIRC). -
So your new reticle is the 3 widespread, lt. green pips in the picture? I don't see a 4th one at the top - is there a top one? If not, I think a top pip would be good for when the bottom one is not visible (due to lack of contrast). I think your idea is excellent...it greatly reduces the effectiveness of reticle shooting but it still tells you where your gun is pointing in case you come upon an OPFOR at very short range - which is a problem if there is no reticle. When I started Arma, I fell into the bad habit of always reticle-shooting because with the default Arma tracers (every bullet is a tracer), it makes shooting moving targets WAY too easy - even distant ones. I've since moved on to scope-shooting. I waste a ton of bullets on moving targets but you get better with time and I assume it's much more realistic. I look forward to trying this in Arma. Combine your reticle with Six Sense Tracers (one tracer out of every 5?) and everyone is forced to man up!

Moviemakers - Win 7/Fraps/Arma = no audio in videos
desertjedi replied to desertjedi's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I switched to using my onboard Realtek sound and I immediately got audio in my Win7/Fraps/Arma movies. The problem would appear to be with Creative's beta drivers. Hopefully, this will be fixed in the final drivers. I've reported the problem on that specific driver's feedback thread at the Creative forums. -
Moviemakers - Win 7/Fraps/Arma = no audio in videos
desertjedi posted a topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit with Arma 1.16 with the latest Fraps (2.9.8) with the Windows 7 beta driver from Creative and get no audio in my Arma videos. I've worked on this problem till my eyes bled but nothing has worked. Has anyone else tried Fraps and Arma under Win 7 RC and did you get audio? Can someone verify for me that there are no audio problems when recording Arma movies when running Vista? I'm guessing that Vista "works" or I'd probably see posts on this forum about it considering all the Arma movie-makers out there. If this works in Vista, hopefully this will get fixed with Win 7 at some point. -
Fraps kills FPS with any setting
desertjedi replied to Halochief89's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
You guys aren't getting what he's saying. As far as I can tell, Fraps is unusable in Arma 2. My rig eats Arma for breakfast and does very well with Arma 2. When I start Fraps while playing the Arma 2 Demo, my frames go from 70-80 down to 2! Something's borked - hopefully it'll be worked out over time.
