    ArmA Progress Updates

Are you trying to tell us that Flashpoint didn't have bullet drop over distance? You're saying that all Flashpoint weapons fired like lasers, with no drop whatsoever, no matter how far you were shooting/ If that's what you're saying, I question whether you've ever played Flashpoint before. The game clearly models such ballistics.

    ArmA Progress Updates

Looks like a placeholder icon to me. Uh, ok. Why don't you withhold judgement until you've actually learned what they're for, how they work, and what they add to the experience? If they're useful, and I'm sure they are, I hope they're in the final release. Uh, no. It's an improved interface. Flashpoint desperately needs an improved interface, and ArmA seems to be doing just that. You seem to be deathly afraid of change, and quite critical and negative about ArmA.

What do you *HOPE* will be in ArmA?

Here is a post I made in the RO forum that explains why "magic eye zoom" is actually a realistic feature of games like Operation Flashpoint.

    Scope VIEW (improved)

The BAS dots were enormous, it shouldn't be like that. The Aimpoint dot is 4MOA, typically, so that shouldn't be hard for someone to scale properly in the game. The way it is right now looks fine to me - reflex optics aren't typically meant for long-range precision shooting. For what they are meant for, however, they're fantastic pieces of equipment. There's much more to be said on this topic, but the important stuff is what has already been mentioned.
  5. Fantastic. This mod has completely taken over our group since we first discovered it a few months ago. It easily has the best gameplay of any mod we've tried, and I cannot wait to see the inevitable Armed Assault version of it. I'm really looking forward to giving this a good run-through in our next big session. The changelist certainly looks impressive.

    Scope VIEW (improved)

ACOG's are typically 4x in military use. They're magnified optics, not red dot sights. Aimpoints, EOTechs, and the Trijicon reflex sight are ALL unmagnified reflex optics. edit: Here's what my EOTech HWS looks like, for reference sake. Where the red reticule is is where the bullet will go. This is not really modeled in games yet, I hope a future BIS game does it.. perhaps Game2. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6171484737767746207
  7. I've written a followup article to my Tactical Gaming Done Right piece, this one being focused on Infiltration, a superb mod that I was unaware of prior to writing the previous article. You can find the new article here. It's chock-full of screens and videos illustrating many of the fantastic features present in the mod. Many of these features will hopefully are either already in Armed Assault or will find their way into future BIS games, if we're lucky.

I'm not speaking to "him" directly, thus there being no name attached to the post. Whoever took the shots is at fault, obviously.

    Latest screenshots available

If you truly care about the game, why would you release a bunch of screens that are taken in the poorest possible fashion? It amazes me that anyone who is an ArmA fan would ever do something like what was done with that vehicle list. If you can't take good screens, leave it to those who can. People will complain enough about the visuals on their own, you don't need to go out of your way to make bad shots to fuel their fire.

    ArmA Progress Updates

Yes! There has never in the history of PC gaming been a date published for a game that was missed! Why do you people get so worked up over this stuff? It'll be out when it's out, no sooner. Don't trust any release dates until BIS themselves tell you them.

    Breath Holding?

Having glasses does not automatically mean that you cannot shoot. I'm not sure where you got that impression from. There are things to take into account if you're shooting with glasses, yes, but they play a relatively small factor compared to the actual fundamentals of marksmanship. I became a coach in the last year of my four years of service. I also ran an Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer (ISMT, I referenced it earlier) that we used to train people on various weapon systems. I spent a great deal of time in it firing (simulated) machineguns, anti-tank weapons, shotguns, submachineguns, rifles, pistols, etc, and I was able to improve my pistol shooting in particular by a great amount. If you're interesting in seeing a few pictures from the ISMT, you can find them here: http://dslyecxi.com/images/ismt/ I know where you're coming from, and I'll go ahead and ask a few of them for your sake, but I can guarantee they'll echo my thoughts. Shooting in combat requires a compression of the fundamentals of marksmanship - the same things you do on the range still apply, you just have to do them more quickly. As to your earlier link about the "improved" USMC qualificaition course, when I was serving we did field fire, it just wasn't part of the score. It was limited-exposure, moving targets, with you doing transitions from stance to stance and such. There was also an Unknown Distance course-of-fire that we did in bootcamp. Think of it as controlling your breathing, not merely "holding your breath". If I sprinted across the street and was breathing heavy, I'd still try to control my breathing if I were trying to take an accurate aimed shot at someone. As far as I'm concerned, any "hold breath" feature should be known as a "Shot Concentration" feature instead, so that it more clearly represents the various factors it takes into account. America's Army's system was frustrating beyond belief, since you had no control over the breathing. I hated that. I would likewise hate to see that in ArmA. Have a little more faith in BIS than that.

    Breath Holding?

It's nice to have someone else tell me what my intent is, and then sit there and brush off my personal experiences (which you aren't even fully aware of) as somehow not totally relevant here. If you somehow think that my shooting experience (to include live-fire, MOUT, and a robust ISMT simulator that includes 3D training with low-exposure, moving targets out to 500+ meter ranges) is completely invalidated because I haven't done it in an actual life-or-death situation, by all means, believe that. I could easily go and talk to any number of Army and Marine friends who have "been there, done that" that would back up what I have to say. This is not mere theory on my part, but thank you kindly for brushing it off as that. Thank you, Cpt. Obvious. The "rifle range" is the least relevant of my shooting training, however it is great for the emphasis of fundamentals, which is what this discussion is about. Breath control is a fundamental part of marksmanship; to say otherwise is folly. It should be included in any tactical realism game worth its salt. Again, thank you again for discounting my experience as if it is not relevant. As a former USMC pistol/rifle coach, that means a lot to me. Do I have to sit down and write a very detailed post explaining the concepts of this? You're being quite closeminded (as are others), if you took a bit of time to think about the situation you'd understand that a "hold breath/concentrate" key would still have a purpose even if your virtual soldier were tired at the time. But hey, if you'd like to think that it's a silly thought to try to control your breathing when you're exhausted, that's fine by me. Fortunately for those of us who enjoy that crazy thing called "realism", you're not the one calling the shots on the game's features.
  13. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

Do you have any shooting experience to back that up? As an experienced real-world shooter with credentials, I can tell you without question that breath control plays a very large part in accurate marksmanship. The 'natural respiritory pause' is a major element of shooting. To say otherwise, as I've mentioned previously in this topic, only shows that you are not familiar with real world shooting, or are a poor shot.

    Breath Holding?

Haha. I see. You're a Reservist who thinks he's hot shit because he was active for four months. You're a disgrace to the Army, buddy. Your conduct in this forum is not what I would expect from an Army servicemember, Reserve or not. As to "Who's the racist bastard here", I think the answer is clear. Enjoy your last few posts on the forum, buddy. You're not going to be here long.
  15. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

Was that a racial slur you slipped in there at the end? Brilliant! As to proof, well.. how about this? That's me, in 2005, on Okinawa. Note how I'm an actual former military member, not some kiddie who's claiming to have been one in some mystery past life.
  16. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

Prove it. Post some kind of proof that you've served. I seriously, seriously doubt it. And yes, you did make a mistake. We don't put up with your kind of bullshit here. Have fun back at the AAZone forums. We certainly won't miss you. edit: I've yet to see this. Both of the USM members who have posted here have shown a total lack of maturity. I somehow doubt the rest of you are any different. If by some odd chance they are, man... they should be ashamed that you are the one that ended up making the USM's impression on these boards.
  17. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

I hope to see you banned from these forums. It's going to happen if you continue this behavior. Also, like others have said, I seriously doubt that you've ever been enlisted in the US Armed Forces. Your total lack of maturity would have never survived through basic training. edit: Haha, he threw in a personal attack against me. Good job, buddy.
  18. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

Quoting so he doesn't get out of this one, either. I present you a golden example of what I am talking about. What you see above is precisely why I have issues with the USM clan. That complete lack of maturity is disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. It's a shame you're a part of our community.
  19. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

My god. You USM guys amaze and disgust me. You guys simply do not have the ability to debate things on this forum in a civil manner. If you cannot refrain from calling people "idiots" because they were taught something different than you in their military service, please find some other place to post. Your elitist "Hurr, I'm too good for CoD2, it's not realistic enough!" attitude is likewise disgusting. Your remark about the "World's real Army (US)" is also extremely inflamatory considering that the Flashpoint community is a multi-national one. There are plenty of current and former servicemembers in here who hail from a wide variety of countries. The fact that you are in the US Armed Forces does not make you "better" than them. Your attitude sure as shit does not make you better than them. What GranQ said is called a "mnemonic", in his case it was intended to help recruits and soldiers remember the basic shooting steps. It is not an exhaustive list of all the things one must take into account when shooting, and the fact that you took it to be that and then harshly critiqued him is, again, disgusting. Highspeed, you may think you're hot shit because you're in - what, the US Army, I'm guessing? That does not make you better than anyone else here. What counts here is knowledge, attitude, and the ability to communicate in a civil fashion. You may have some knowledge, but your attitude SUCKS and your tact is absolutely atrocious. Cut your elitist bullshit out, please. It's getting old. As a former US Marine myself, you're making the military that I am oh-so-proud of look like ass by your piss-poor behavior. If you would like me to jump in here and tear into your "aiming techniques" and call you an idiot, let me know. I served as a rifle/pistol coach during my service and was a multiple-award EXPERT shooter for both weapons, I'm sure I could do a fine job of making you feel like a dunce based upon the little writeup you did right there. I'll take the higher ground and refrain from doing that now, perhaps you can learn from my example? Perhaps not. In any case, you have done a fine job of once again reinforcing in my mind that the USM "squad" is something to be avoided at all costs. Pool all the maturity that you guys apparently have, combined, and we'd be lucky to fill a thimble. edit: Gee, color me surprised. He edited his post. Pity I quoted his original inflammatory post in mine, eh?

    Breath Holding?

Features that are unrealistic. IMO Every one that has fired with a assault rifle or any weapon with iron sights will know what i mean. When sights are adjusted (maybe 1 time in a year) you don't need to touch them. You just look down your sights and find target, BANG. Hit. So if you implement some silly buttons that you have to every time you shoot adjust it's just WRONG. But i don't think BIS would even consider that. So nothing to worry about. Potatomasher, thank you kindly for jumping to the totally incorrect conclusions. There are significant features that are IMPOSSIBLE on a 2D sight system that would be made possible via 3D sights, and I'm NOT talking about "zeroing" your weapon. Try reading anything linked in my signature. You might learn something. Maybe then you'll have a clue as to the kind of features I'm talking about? Try the Infiltration article first, as it showcases all kinds of great things that can be done with 3D sights.
  22. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

I agree, that is how the sights should look. Infact that is exactly how they look, I don't know who came up with that other bull. Thats a step back IMO. FIX IT BIS. It's not a step back. The benefits to having a 3d ironsight system should be obvious. Whether you like how the overall effect looks is a distant second to the kind of functionality that a 3d sighting system brings. I would be utterly horrified if ArmA ended up having 2D sights. Those of you advocating them simply do not understand the kind of features that are completely impossible to implement with a 2D sight setup.

    Breath Holding?

Have you ever watched professional biathletes? The top biathletes are absolutely amazing with the precision shooting while exhausted. That is completely and totally beyond the point. What professional biathletes do has no relevance to ArmA. In the context of this, what I said holds true.
  24. dslyecxi

    Breath Holding?

I'll chime in here as well. Being an ex-Marine myself, and one of those ones who always, always qualified Expert on the range, the 'natural respiritory pause' (which can be extended by holding your breath) is a CRITICAL element of marksmanship. Saying anything other than that is quite simply proof that a person has never before fired a real-world weapon. There is no actual trained shooter on these forums, or anywhere for that matter, that would argue the point otherwise. Breath holding is an important feature for a number of reasons that I won't go into right now. If you want to know more, go ahead and read through the articles linked in my sig. edit: Some people just don't get it.

    Interiors?

I would be highly disappointed to see ArmA not have full 3D interiors for all vehicles and all positions of said vehicles. One of my favorite things about RO: Ostfront was how smooth the vehicle interiors were - it would be a damn shame if ArmA didn't at least match OFP in this respect, but the thought of them matching Ostfront is very appealing as well. The thought of it not having full 3D interiors, on the other hand, is horrible to consider.
