I'm running a 1.5GHz P4, 256mb RAM, GeForce2 64MB, on a fiber-optic DSL line. I think she's "good enough" to use in an online OFP game. Â However, I don't know the difference between online play and a dead snail. Â Anyone know where I can get a walkthrough on how to jump into an online OFP game that's so incredibly simple and basic that my 8 year old could read it and teach me? Can you please pass the jelly?

Just yesterday I was trying a few missions, and decided to equip myself with the M-60, for the sake of trying something new (I usually go with the M-21 or the M16/M203 combo). I ran around the mission with him, took some cheap-shots at some enemy troops, and overall played him out. What I found to be unusual was when I went prone with him. I know I'm probably SERIOUSLY behind in that everyone ELSE in the world may have already noticed, but... the bipod in the M-60 doesn't fold out. Now, I don't know if this wasn't made so because of restrictions in the game, or because BIS chose to eat jelly doughnuts instead of work on the programming. The point is, running around with a heavy chunk of metal like the M-60, that clearly shows the bipod just "hanging around", then hitting the deck, only to keep the bipod up, just... doesn't seem right. It's like I'm breaking some cardinal military law. Anyone else with me on this, or has this topic been discussed to death well before I thought about posting?

Oh? ::raises a curious brow:: Did you say a flamethrower exists for v1.46? VERY interesting... as I don't have Resistance just yet, this could be a truly interesting detail. Say.... where could a pyromaniac such as myself find such a glorified cigarette lighter such as this? ... hmmm?

If we're going for the ridiculous, I'd love to get the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine in my TOW sights... ... but... If we're going for the serious and the practical, I think a civilian Armored Truck would be a nice touch. Â The kind that Wells Fargo and Brinks use. Â I would imagine that the Resistance wouldn't be above "commandeering" such a vehicle to help with the "war effort". Â When the going gets tough, the tough get armor! Also, another interesting addition would be a semi, or tractor-rig. Â A full-speed Kenworth or Peterbuilt charging down on you could be rather intimidating...

The problem with full mods is..............
Demagor replied to tactical's topic in ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
A couple of tidbits to throw into the water... 1. How does the release of new game versions affect their development? Â For example... if they've been working with v1.46 for 6 months... and they're 5% complete... and all of a sudden, Resistance (v1.75) comes out! Â Now what?! Â Back to the drawing board? Tedious backtracking to update/fix/modify/recode/improve something previously done that can now benefit from Resistance's changes? Â How do upgrades and/or official expansions (include Red Hammer here, please) affect MOD creation? 2. Another factor... to THEIR benefit is in fact related to time. Let's consider how long it took Codemasters/BIS to make OFP in the first place. It SEEMS to us like the MOD-makers are taking their sweet time, because we already have a finished and fully functional version of OFP to compare it to. Though the MOD-makers aren't exactly "working from scratch" (since the game essentially already exists and they're creating modifications of an existing product), their MOD creations (which are clearly several) in a way ARE from scratch. Â It's easy to re-skin the M16, but it's a different story to completely create an MP43! Â If the MOD-makers would have "theoretically/somehow" began their MOD at the same time the Codemasters/BIS team began creating OFP, then as of today, the MOD folks would be seriously lagging (since OFP has been out for nearly a year if not so already). Â However, that's not the case. In my opinion, the MOD-makers should be praised. If someone had told Michaelangelo to paint the chapel in 20-mins, it wouldn't have been as incredible as it is. Â Granted it's a wait... it's a wait and a half... but... credit and kudos to them for committing THAT much time to the project in the first place. Â Yes, many of them will die out and join the ranks of "Great Things That Never Were", but those that do not... I personally assure you... will make you say "WOW. That was worth the wait!". Please do not take this as a rant, or as a complaint. It's FAR from it. I can't design a straight line, much less an OFP add-on. I'm not even worthy to stand in a puddle of their own piss, much less bicker about the time they're taking. Work on, great fellows... work until your brows are singed by the candlelight... work on, and work well. "A round of Red Stripe for the gents!" -

WOW. You guys rock. Â That's a wealth of information. I really appreciate all of this. Â Now, not that I wanna push my luck, but allow me a few questions, and a paraphrase or two, to be certain I've taken this all in accurately. 1. TK = Team Kills? Â i.e. Friendly Fire? 2. I'm currently in EST. Â My normal playing hours would be weekdays from 7pm-1am (not consistently on at that times, mind you... just my most likely available hours). Â Any suggestions as to what good servers are available then? Hopefully those with friendly and understanding fellow players. 3. I've had OFP since 11/01, so I've played it enough to know the differences between appearances. Â I've also noticed that the Resistance camoflauge resembles that of the West, but it has a little more red/brown in it. Their backpacks also seem to stick out more. 4. Do servers usually run custom maps and .pbos? Â In other words, are there any additional files that I should have just in case? I've downloaded countless already (weapons, infantry, vehicles, aircraft, islands, etc.) so I'm comfortable that I would have the more common AddOns. Â I only ask because I've played more than my share of QuakeIII and have been disappointed when a custom weapon that I use and have installed is not seen by the other player because they don't have it themselves. 5. OK on the ASAP sorry. I'll make sure to blurt out petty grovelling words of forgiveness and mercy for each friendly kill I "score". 6. ASE all the way, I've only heard good things about it. 7. Tex, you mentioned something about joining Squads. Are there any that you recommend for an Online OFP newbie, or should I really get my feet wet before I consider joining any? (Probably because even if I wanted to, I wouldn't know HOW to join a squad! 8. I'm good at field combat (overt and covert) and a decent vehicle driver and gunner. I can't fly a paper airplane, so I won't even go there. Â I'm good with maps; God bless the compass. 9. FPS = Frames Per Second? Thanks gang...

Mr. Frag : Thanks for the feedback/leads. Â I'll look into them and post what I find out. Â I appreciate your help. Lemme ask you, though... would you happen to know if those Norinco rounds are still attainable? Â They seemed to function well and were satisfactorably accurate. Â They were a tad costly, but that's compared to my BrowningHP (9mm) ammo, which has more versions of inexpensive shoot-away rounds than Pamela Anderson has had boob-jobs! Harnu : I've tried several gun shops near me, and no one stocks it. I purchased the gun at a local Gun Convention nearly 10 years ago, and the handful of conventions I've visited since have turned up no results. The original gun shop that I bought it from (that had a booth at the convention) is no longer in business.

GOOD POINT! Â Well, I see bullet casings flying out... where do THEY land? Perhaps in that same mythical pocket-universe where all the empty magazines go... ... either that, or perhaps there's some courageous, noble citizen, and community patriot that secretly follows the player around with a pooper-scooper. Â Or would it be a clip-scooper? ...or a casing-scooper... or...

I'm currently running OFP straight, v1.46. I'm looking into getting Resistance, but I don't have it just yet. I'm waiting for the wifey to look the other way so I can hide it in the shopping cart, under all the soy-this and tofu-that crap. Ugh.

I too think that tracers should be optional. Perhaps an optional ammunition type or magazine type. Â Though M16s aren't the most accurate weapons at long ranges, I'll be the first to admit that I've taken my far shots at targets with one. Tracers, in such a situation, have done nothing but hurt me. Really, I personally find them hard to follow (i.e. they do nothing to help my aim in the game). When I'm usually shooting, I shoot from the "just behind the weapon, but not necessarily the sights" view (or whatever it's technically called). The tracers are too much of a blur for me, as I'm looking at the dust cloud or bullet holes from the rounds (depending what's around my target) to guide my aim. Granted, that statement probably hints at my aiming skills, but... ah well. When shooting from medium or long range with a tracer-equipped weapon, I've found that a 3rd party (not near the shooter and not near the target, but near the "action") can easily spot the shooter (a bad thing for the shooter). Â Where otherwise this 3rd party would have to hear the gunshots, or happen to be looking in the vicinity of the shooter (where they can see the muzzle flash), now they've got a pretty little "landing strip" to guide them to the gunman. I've been taken out many times this way. When the "other guy" either wouldn't have known, or would have been less-likely to know, where I was, my chances would have been better. Damn these tracers... pass me the M-21.

I am a BIG fan of solo missions. Â I like it when it's me, backed up by me, giving orders to me. The time it takes to give orders, as few seconds as it takes, is time I could have spent popping four of five infantry. I'm not a big fan of "Get in, get out, don't let them know you were there" missions. Â I find it difficult to play an entire mission without letting a little bit of lead fly. Â My fingers twitch. Â My neck jolts. Â I jump into convulsions. Â My mouth begins to foam. Ack... ... wait... I accidentally shut down my Pacemaker... ... okay... it's on now. Ahhh.... much better.

Though I've been a player and DM for the last 13 years, I'd have to say that the worst movie I have ever seen (and I have seen some serious crap) was "Dungeons & Dragons". There was something about the henchman's blue lipstick that didn't let me concentrate on the movie. Â It was like a bad accident! That movie was so bad that I watched the first 10 minutes, then pulled it out of the DVD, and returned it to the video rental store that same night. I didn't want it lying around, polluting my house! Ack!

I was really hoping for a fully functional bipod that you can initiate it's setup. Perhaps from the Action menu? Even if it doesn't "technically" improve aim, stability, or anything of that nature, it would really give it a much more realistic look. I dunno, perhaps I'm being picky. Next thing I'll ask for, is a stick-shift Willys Jeep! Hmmm....

Think of this too... tracers may give a general idea of where the person that's shooting at you is located, but if they have a half-decent aim, you probably won't have the luxury of getting a chance to look at them! On another point, tracers were used extensively during WWII for AAA guns. Nearly every image of naval warfare shows a barrage of flak shooting up into the sky, lit up by a row of tracer. In this case, it was used to help in aiming. Since many of these guns had nothing more than iron sights, gunners needed everything they could get their hands on to hit the target. Especially when dealing at such extreme ranges, since you can't see your shots, you don't know if you're firing ahead or behind the target. Tracers helped them see where their bullets were going... then aim left, aim right, or whatever was necessary to blow that bi*ch out of the sky!

Yes, I know it's embarassing and yes, I'll wear the DUNCE hat if I have to. Â I just want to find the thread where I posted a reply so I can read up on it. The problem is, I can't find it! Â I made my reply post just this week. Â I have an idea of what it's called, but I did a search and it didn't appear. Â I don't remember the name of the person who started the thread, and I've made keyword searches using my name, and using terms that I know I included in my post, but all without any results. Anyone know how else I can find it? Â Â

I tried, Ralphie! No Luck! Oh, and this post was sometime earlier this week, so I don't think the data corruption is an issue.

Greetings, fellow warmongers. This post is simple and to-the-point. Some friends and I are playing a certain CTF map that we're very fond of. Â I recently introduced them to some custom .pbo weapon files that they're very interested in. Â However, in all honesty, we're too lazy to make our own new map with the new soldier-types (based on the new weapons). What we're trying to do, is open up the existing CTF map, add the custom soldier types, then run it like that. Â However, the CTF map in question has a .PBO extention while maps that you create with the Mission Editor save as .SQM files. Anyone know a quick and simple way around this? Â If it's easier to just make a new CTF map versus opening an existing file and modifing it as such, then so be it. But if there's a way to receive maximum results with minimal efforts, I gotta find it! Regards,

Correction to the Topic: It's NEW MISSIONS. Drat. Anyway... does anyone know where I can find some new single-player missions? Â Sniper and Seek-n-Destroy themes are best, but beggars can't be choosers! Thanks! (Edited by Demagor at 8:59 pm on Nov. 23, 2001)
