  1. Last time i checked USA had the best Army in the world... Best trained, motivated, and ready to kick some ass.

It hasn't been tested after WW II. Japan and Germany was a real test for the U.S. military, but after that... well Vietnam was a loss for you... even if it wasn't even nearly as bad as Germany for example... also Iraq doesn't seem to go too well, except that G.W.B., oddly enough, already declared victory... and shouted "We got him!" yeah, sure you did...

okay it's politics which can make even a strong army not succeed, that's what is going wrong in Iraq, I think the U.S. military is really not the right tool to rebuild Iraq. It is doomed to fail and that's not the fault of the U.S. military, it's the fault of your country's leaders.

  2. Sure.

I suggest you try not to create the terrain heightfield in Visitor but in some other program which is more suited for the task.

You could maybe import heighfield data into Visitor. The heightfield data could have been generated from real terrain (google for DEM for starters). There are programs which can be used to generate a heightfield. Or you could have drawn a heightfield bitmap in an image editing program and create the terrain heightfield from that.

Go to http://www.ofpec.com/ and read all tutorials from that website related to island creation. There is a lot of information. OFPEC also has some tools related to heightfields.

Basically ofpec.com has the information you need to get started. Also read the Visitor 2 tutorial from the BIS Breathe website.

Oh, one more thing. WrpTool from the Operation Flashpoint section of http://tactical.nekromantix.com/ comes with a manual you want to read. It has information which can help you understand the terrain creation process. It has for example a "HOW TO CREATE TERRAIN" section which mentions some tools. Read that.

  3. Use a civilian and if it should be a soldier, then show only the head in a cutscene smile_o.gif

Probably not a good solution but it depends what you are doing. If only for a cutscene then it could work (but doesn't look good).

If that isn't enough then create an addon. Join a civilian's head into a soldier's body in 3D editing program, could be a fast way to do it if you want to go that route. But consider if you really need it, if for only one mission then I would not bother.

  4. How do people know how much bug-fixing has been done to ArmA since patch 1.08 was released? I don't know and I refuse to make guesses. People assume that BIS has stopped, or will soon stop, fixing bugs in ArmA. And then they come here and burst crying about it. Like they have a crystal ball or something to check everyday what BIS is doing and what BIS is going to do. Just stop it, it's so silly smile_o.gif I am not going to believe you have such a crystal ball, or else, show your evidence.

Also one other thing which I want to say. I have come to a conclusion that if I were a game developer, I would seriously consider dropping the whole PC scene and develop games only for consoles. There is no way any game development company in the World could promise that their product works on every single combination of hardware components you can assemble into a computer. In my opinion, which is based on spending quite a lot of time reading this forum, the biggest problems with ArmA has been caused by incompatibility problems with some hardware combinations and buggy drivers, and wrong operating system used. People who try to use ArmA on an unsupported operating system come here to complain that ArmA is not working well or even doesn't work at all. Well that's too bad for them, but shouldn't they have first understood what operating systems ArmA is meant for? I mean if you have a problem of ArmA not working on Windows Vista then that's a problem you created by yourself as you are trying to do something the developers did not promise will work.

Yeah sure there are problems caused also because ArmA itself has bugs. Those are what we can reasonably expect from BIS to do something about. But the infinite problems with hardware, I can not see how BIS could solve all your hardware, hardware driver and operating system problems.

The many problems with hardware, hardware drivers and operating system bugs & incompatibilities could be avoided if the games were made for a console. True, a console might have problems too, like any piece of hardware a man can design and manufacture, but at least the technical specifications of the console are the same for every user. That is a practical impossibility in the PC scene.

I'm not saying BIS should develop only console games, I'm saying the PC scene has a huge amount of problems and is in my opinion badly suited for entertainment products. The fact that the games BIS makes are expected to have mission editing/modding possibilities does not make the consoles shine, as they are not meant for such work in the first place. Maybe a hybrid could be developed, where the actual playing is done on a console (so the majority of the people won't have to bother with the PC and its infinite amount of problems) and if you would like to modify / create new content for the games, then you could fire up your PC and enjoy all the problems it brings as much as you want.

ArmA 2. If it will really be released for a console, I will consider buying a console and the console version of ArmA 2 instead of a PC version. Problem is there should be a possibility to do all the same mission editing / addon creation work for the console version too, as is possible in the PC version.

If you think about it, a computer game is an entertainment product as first priority. No matter if there is a word 'simulation', it is still an entertainment product and its supposed to just be thrown into a machine, press "play" and it should Just Work. There are the people who so much like to resolve PC hardware&software problems, and brag about being able to do it, but seriously, think about it, did you then give the technology a role which it doesn't deserve? I think that's what happened, when we bought an entertainment product and ended up being system administrators.

I hope BIS does some serious research on the subject of making a game for consoles but allowing users create content for it on personal computers with an easy workflow, not requiring old C-programmers who live in a small island somewhere far away, to hack the system and file formats.

  5. it will move all strangfe ways. arms and lags flapping in the air smile_o.gif would be cool

    Hehe  biggrin_o.gif  well...

Just "ragdoll" is not good enough alone. You said it yourself, "it will move all strange ways.

In a human body there are resistance, springs, dampeners. There are forces which try to prevent arms and "lags" flapping in the air. Simulating all that requires more than just putting "ragdoll" into a game.

You can try just "ragdoll" yourself with some freely available game engine components, set your character to have ragdoll physics, and see if you can get natural looking movement for the character. Then ask yourself a question: do I want that into ArmA 2?

The point is, it's much more complicated than just "ragdoll".

  6. I am not in a position to cast a vote in the U.S. Presidential elections, but I would like to say a couple of words.

If I could vote in the U.S. Presidential elections, I would vote for someone who...

    ...isn't a relative of a former U.S. President...

...isn't using religious speeches to fool people...

...isn't related to the people who wrote or helped other people to write the document "Rebuilding America's Defences: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New Century"...

...does not have strong ties to industries which would benefit greatly from the U.S. waging wars...

...does not have strong ties to the oil industry...

...is willing to reduce the U.S. military budget significantly, and divert all the money saved into; reducing debt, improving public healthcare system, improving social security system, reducing crime in the U.S.A., putting some sense to the way too liberal gun control, reducing pollution, reducing oil-based fuels usage... directing the U.S. citizens away from gas-guzzler vehicles... ...basically into making the U.S.A. a better place to live in, instead of using ridiculous amounts of money into ruining someone else's place in addition to ruining your own place...

Well the list goes on and on, I stop here. You get the idea, I want someone to be the President of the U.S. who doesn't fuck up everything all around the World but concentrates on how to make the U.S.A. a better place.

I don't know which one of the candidates could match my wishlist so I don't make a choice here.

Why do I say a word here? Because what the U.S.A. does, unfortunately affects my life. Such a big and strong country like the U.S.A. should not be allowed to be steered by someone like G.W.B., it's way too dangerous to give such men big guns.

  7. Tanks seem to sometimes also get stuck and just keep pushing against the wall instead of simply backing up a bit and driving away.

    That's what they do yes.

If you read about artificial intelligence, pathfinding and such subjects you'll notice it's a problem not only in ArmA, but in the algorithms used generally. The algorithm lets the AI unit "try" for some time, before deciding that a failier happened. Then a new course is set for the unit and a new "try" starts, hopefully with better results.

What could be done could be to reduce the time the algorithm lets the AI unit be stuck so the player has less chance of noticing it.

Or create a way to let the AI unit "see" better its surroundings (add CPU load and memory consumption).

  8. Notice people that the installer creates the environment for the administrator user who installs the programs. If you use some other user account to use the programs then the settings the installer created won't have any effect.

You should use a non-administrator user account to use your computer. A user account with administrator rights is only meant for installing programs and for doing maintenance work.

  9. You better be sure you have gone through all the material at http://www.ofpec.com/

    Read everything.

About scripting what you can do is go through a scripting command reference one command at a time, thinking what can be done with it and test it in the mission editor. Make small test missions in which you test only one aspect of mission editing, for example how do you get a boat to transport a group from island A to island B. Don't even try to put anything else to the mission. Get it working.  Then continue with another test mission and do the same with a helicopter. How do you make a helicopter pick up a group and transport them to another location? Again, don't try to do anything else in that test mission. Continue like this, divide a mission into small sub-tasks and make all of the sub-tasks work one at a time.

Over time this results in you getting the required knowledge to create missions.

By the way, Visitor 3 crashes everytime I close it

Disconnect and then close buldozer first, then close Visitor.

    Planck

Hmm... I'm quite sure it didn't matter if buldozer was running or not...

...one thing I noticed was that when I started Visitor 3 as an administrator, it didn't crash then! It actually crashed when I tried to save a file (crashed while writing the file, I checked the file in hex editor and it looked like the file wasn't written completely) or exited the program, so it turned out that it was impossible to use the program as non-administrator to create worlds.

I'll test it again when I get into Windows, but for sure it can be called a bug of Visitor 3 if it requires me to run it as administrator or otherwise the program crashes on save/exit.

Other programs (not from BIS) work fine on this computer and operating system.

  11. but i got a new problem...

how do i close or minimize the buldozer window...

when im in Buldozer my mouse arrow hiding...

and the only way to go back to Desktop or oxygen is pressing

ctrl+alt+del to open the task manager...

    can someone help me plzzzzz!!!

Hold ALT and press TAB. You can then cycle through the programs you have open. Works for me.

  12. One thing... why some people start to worry about what kind of teams BIS has, and if they are working and how they are working... it's really something we should not worry about in my opinion. I'm sure BIS has a manager who overlooks the company and arranges teams and their work? That would mean it is not for us to worry about.

Think about BIS as a black box which from time to time spits out a game which you can then buy if you want...

...and you got Flashpoint already, didn't you?

  14. The installation of the programs has to be done as administrator. The installer creates the environment for this user account (administrator). If you use the programs as some other user (probably non-administrator), then the environment is not set for you. It's a mistake by BIS I say. The programs has to be installed as administrator, and the installer creates registry keys (for example the path to external viewer, ArmA, is set up at installation stage for the admin) and sets up the mapdisk.bat thingy for the administrator, which makes the p:\ drive appear in every login, but only for the admin... That won't help one bit if you use some other user account to use the programs... you really shouldn't use an administrator account all the time so it's not your fault.

By the way, Visitor 3 crashes everytime I close it smile_o.gif

  15. Hmm, who else is with me that we need a totally different setting, it seems that BIS devs are obsessed with cold wars and communism, If you're going to have a US vs Russia why not have Russia invade the US?

So far I haven't seen a word about communism neither on armedassault.com nor on arma2.com, I have no idea why everyone here complains about ArmA2 is covering another US vs. Russia conflict.

    All it says is:

Quote[/b] ]ArmA 2  is set in the near future, year 2009, in a <span style='color:red'>fictional post soviet country</span> called Chernarus. Players will be sent as members of a United States Marine Corps Force Recon squad to this country to prevent further civilian casualties and ensure ongoing stability there.

That can mean alot, including a counter-insurgent story or fighting some dictatorship. There's no word about fighting communism.

It's really funny how so many people here can tell everything out of the blue from 6 pictures and 109 words in 3 paragraphs.

Let's see what more informations we get in the next few months and especially let's see if we'll get ArmA 2 in 2008. Until then a lot of water rushing down the river.

So c'mon, let's discuss this seriously and don't come with complaints like the above or about vehicle damage texture, not knowing if those in the screens are not just placeholders.  smile_o.gif

Yes yes smile_o.gif it's funny how people already know what kind of game ArmA2 is even when the information provided by BIS is very minimal.

If you want to get real-life examples of a post-Soviet country, then how about Estonia? For sure they are not Russians even though they belonged to the USSR! Other examples easy to find... you must differentiate what is Russian and what is not... my country was a part of Russia (note: not part of Soviet Union even though they tried to realize it) for some time, but for sure the Finnish people are not Russian, have never been and will never be, no matter how you draw the borders to the map. The same applies to Estonians as well, among others.

So basically we know nothing what nation the USA is facing in ArmA2. Except that it is "fictional", except that "post-Soviet" is not fictional.

But I agree with people who think there could be some other setting than the USA versus <insert whatever here>! Why not the Swedes against the Danes for example? "Not interesting?" How can you tell? The USA is in every wargame and to be honest, it starts to get boring. I hoped BIS could be the game developer who changes that, but it still doesn't seem to happen. I would be happier for example to see the Czech military in a game than the US military... isn't it underestimating the US customers if you think that they won't buy a wargame which doesn't have the US military in it? If the game is really good and worth buying then I think it doesn't matter much what country you picture in it.
