Well... you are basically saying that the game should be multiplayer only. There is a lot of problems in multiplayer too. According to my experiences, it is very hard to get a good multiplayer session going. I've learned that it requires a password-protected server at least, and that alone isn't enough. For me a game having only multiplayer mode would not be worth of buying. Yes there are problems in how AI works in ArmA. But there are a lot of improvements too, compared to the AI in OFP! I leave it for the reader to spot what I mean... I have played many coop missions so that I was the goup leader and all others in the group were AI. The AI soldiers can be very effective, but as a leader you must be aware of the fact that they do mostly what you tell them to do. So it takes more time to play missions that way. But it can be very effective way to play! If you organize the units well, and have enough patience to assign them targets and give them order to fire on a right moment. You can be very effective that way, but for sure it takes more effort and time from you than just playing with humans. Because the AI soldiers mostly lack their own will. If you are their leader, they will then follow your orders, maybe even too strictly?

Uuuh... the suggestion to throw AI out of the window is weird!

Well... ragdoll could fix one very ugly looking thing in OFP/ArmA... when a soldier dies, he stays in the position of the last frame of the death animation. This means that the soldier can have his feet or hands high up in the air, right after receiving a headshot. I personally don't think that a dead body will get cold and stiff so fast... it should adjust itself to the terrain. This is one thing in ArmA in which ragdoll can help. But this is not a major thing, it would only bring better eye-candy and a better feeling of realism, but wouldn't change the actual gameplay much. Fixing this particular point with ragdolls would affect more the feeling you would get, not the actual way you play. But can't ragdoll bring so much more than just this? Edit: I must add that the animations in ArmA can look very robotic... there is for example a scene which plays when you are in the main menu... a close look at a soldiers head. The head of the soldier turns in a very very robotic way, I can't see anything human in that. It looks like a mechanical robot which turns an arm from one extreme to the other. This problem with the animations certainly needs improvement. Is it micro-animations or what. Add random variation into the movement of body parts. Add damping to the joints (simulate muscles restricting the movement). Et cetera.

You can do a simple test. Open the case of your computer and use your hand to try how warm the CPU cooling block is. You can tell if it is at 20 or at 50 degrees Celcius, I am sure of that. Before you put your hand to the CPU, touch the metallic parts of the case while having the power cord of the PSU attached. As an attempt to discharge electric potential in you so that you won't destroy the sensitive parts of the computer with it. As a sidenote, heat will reduce the efficiency and stability of the electric components of a computer. But you will have to make sure no ice/water appears in your computer. Scientists have been researching how to make a computer in which there is no resistance at all. Problem is today that if we want to achieve that, we need to cool the materials into so low temperature that it isn't really practical. There is a package BI_Editing_ToolsRC3.zip which has sound tools for ArmA, WaveToLip.exe and WaveToSSS.exe. A link to that package is provided by BIS somewhere in this forum... Do you have the WaveToLip.exe from that package or from an older package? The executable file is at least different size so maybe it is a better version than the old one.

It has to be noted that I do believe in some important things which are socialistic, such as having healthcare services provided by the state. I demand it in my country, and I have it. I pay taxes and good public healthcare is something I am given back. It is a good deal I think. I do not want to have to rely on private insurance companies for my healthcare. I can see that people from the USA might not have their public healthcare arranged as well as it is arranged here. So in this light, I see why you want more socialism. Your country is probably the most capitalistic country in the World? It very much looks like it is. I definitely don't agree with people who think that the poor "deserve" to be in the position they are, and must not be helped. Such statements are too extreme to be agreed with. I believe though that an individual should have the most power regarding how his life turns out to be. I see that socialism reduces individualism. When people are completely equalled, individualism has no place. You can't step forward and say that you are in some regard better than someone else, if you want to be totally equal with everyone else. As such, the idea of everyone being equal is just unacceptable, it is impossible to achieve in reality and thus I refuse to accept it as being a realistic view of how things should be arranged. People who go into an unemployment office to get help, often say that they feel like they are treated like they are some sort of criminals. Like their word can't be trusted one bit. What happened? It happened that they got "equalled". They lost their individualism the moment they stepped into the unemployment office. That is how that system treats people. In an equal manner, ordered by the laws of this country. It may be a safe way to treat people in an unemployment office, but it is clear that many people don't like the feeling which comes as a result of getting equalled. They are equalled to the real "parasites" who are not even trying to get a job or education but just want the money from the unemployment office. That is socialism for you. Someone said that capitalists are parasites, but I think the real parasites get to blossom in a socialistic system. Both systems have parasites of course, but I see that the socialistic system is much more suitable for parasites, through the idea of people being equal. I think that a truly socialistic system is utopy, because of the nature of the human beings. Human beings are competitive by nature. Competitiveness does not fit well into the ideology of socialism, as I see it. When you have a community in which people chant "what is mine is yours, what is yours is mine" competitiveness has no place... because you would then be supposed to share everything. Competing is not sharing. Competing is good! It makes us try harder, opposed to not even trying. Competing makes us advance beyond the limits we thought we had. Innovation is drastically reduced in socialism, as I see it. A community in which you are given a job, or a profit, for just being part of the community, reduces the amount of effort from your side. This is certainly very obvious. The more we go into socialism, the more the effort from individuals reduce. As an example of this. I heard a story about what happened in a factory in the USSR. Workers of a factory broke the manufacturing machines of the factory so that they could not work. And they still kept their job and received their salary, despite of them being guilty of breaking the machines and ensuring that they can't do their job until the machines have been fixed/replaced. This story comes from quite a reliable source, from a businessman who used to do business in the USSR in the 1980's. I have absolutely no reason to think his words being lies.

The whole "theft & slavery" talk sounds like a worker is somehow tied into the company he works for, and can't ever walk away... well, I wanted the job and got it as I was well qualified for it, then I got good salary every two weeks, I got raises often as it was often appropriate, I worked very hard and enjoyed doing it, and then after learning that I could do so much more, I walked away when I wanted to. Theft and slavery just doesn't fit into that picture. I also earned most of the money needed for my first apartment by working in the so-called "slavery". If it was slavery I wouldn't have received any pay, other than the food to keep me alive. When hired CEO's get sacked, that shows that the system really works well. People who screwed something up big time lost their jobs. Somehow I don't think it works like that in socialist communities... Countries which have advertized being "socialist" countries have showed strong signs of dictatorship (USSR, Cuba, now Venezuela. Others?). So that the people who screw up at the top of their socialist systems won't ever get sacked, but can continue to rip off their people. You can argue that this doesn't happen in a "truly" socialist system... a "truly" socialist system is utopy, it won't happen. It is unrealistic, unnatural. Thus you will never find any holding evidence to back it up. Why do socialist countries end up into dictatorship? Is a question you need to answer to yourself. Not every CEO is hired, but is often also the sole owner so there things are differently. But the "reward" for screwing up comes for them too, in some form or another. Wait... did you just say that paying for the un-avoidable expenses of running a company instead of just giving all profit to the worker is equal to stealing from the worker? If you said that seriously, then I must make a conclusion that you really should do a lot of reading about what kind of costs are involved in having an employee and in running a company in general... it's not exactly free to have a company and to have employees. The profit a worker generates has to cover all sorts of costs, not just the salary of the worker, can you imagine? If you meant that the un-avoidable costs are already deducted from the profit (doesn't sound like you mean this), then how do you improve the company? How do you develop new and better products? All profit has to be given for the workers or otherwise it is theft and slavery? This idea is crazy!

When I say that the man at the drill is easy to replace compared to replacing the CEO, I actually mean it. The experience I have gathered during my working career stands behind this claim. The CEO is more important. You can easily find another man who can operate the drill as well as the previous man at the drill did, but try to find another man who can run the company as well as the previous CEO... do you seriously think you can take the man from the drill (who has max. a vocational education) to the position of the CEO and the company could then be realistically expected to keep on succeeding as it did earlier? As I said, this might be a fight against windmills. You have made your mind and refuse to revise your ideas even though people point out serious flaws. One of them being that in a factory, the CEO and the man at the drill should be equal. This is just complete rubbish! Wake up! A little bit about my background. I worked many years as a blue-collar factory worker. I enjoyed it up to the point when I realized that I was restrained too much, I could not affect my own work enough. I also reached a point in my job that I felt that there was little more to learn. I was at the top of the game, as so to speak. So I also felt that I hit the roof regarding how much I can develop myself in that job. I had to choose either to get over it or to do something about it. So I went to educate myself to do something about it. This meant that I was willing to give up lots of income during the time I spend in the educational institute. The people who are same age as me and who stayed in the factory as blue-collar workers, have actually earned a lot more money than I have to this date. Now I have also worked as a white-collar worker. So I know both sides, the side in which I take instructions as a blue-collar worker, and the side in which I give instructions to the blue-collar workers. The factory in which I worked as a blue-collar worker was founded soon after the Soviet Union had collapsed. There was an old factory in that same spot. That company went bankcrupt, partly because the sales to the Soviet Union ceased to exist. Difficult times in this country, definitely. But most people of that factory were unemployed only for a very short amount of time, max. a couple of months for most. Do you want to know why? Because there was one highly-educated and fearless person who was willing to take a huge personal risk: he founded a brand new company into the ruins of the old one! And notice that this happened in the middle of a bad economical depression! The whole country was in big financial problems and future was very uncertain. But this one man wasn't afraid. So, he put up a company, selected one good product and got the factory to produce that product. Then what? Marketing! Guess who did the marketing? That's right! This very same man! He travelled around the World and sold his product where ever he saw a possibility to do so. As he is capable of speaking many languages (unlike most of his blue-collar workers), it wasn't a problem for him to do the marketing abroad. Exporting the product was a necessity for the company's success, as our local economy was in depression, and also the demand for the product isn't high enough in our relatively small market to let such a company grow into a profitable business. So, are you saying that I should not give this man a higher status in the company than the blue-collar workers? That is absolutely ridiculous! The company would not exist today if this man had not stepped forward. In the middle of a depression it was very, very important that there are people like him, who can actually start a succesful business when things otherwise look very bad. This is the kind of people we need. To be honest with you, among those many blue-collar workers I worked with, are not a single individual who could have done the same thing. Number one reason is that they lack the education to do so. How do you run such a company without speaking languages or without knowing how to calculate all the financial calculations a CEO has to know from the top of his head? How? How do you gain the status of a world-wide leader in your product segment if all you have is uneducated people, many of them stopped studying after finishing elementary school... This might be a fight against windmills. At least I can try to make you understand... On personal level, I judge people mostly how I have seen them behave, and what have they done to my knowledge. I don't take a blue-collar worker and ridicule him just because he's a blue-collar worker. Definitely not. I appreciate such people, hey I was one of them not-so-long-ago. And I still enjoy getting my hands dirty. I know what their work is like. But for sure I am not so naive to think that the CEO of that company is not worth more than anyone of his blue-collar workers... because he is definitely worth much, much more, and there is no question about that. If he gets a better salary then I can say that he certainly deserves it. He deserved it in the beginning of the 1990's by saving lots of people from unemployment. He's a rich man today and he deserves to be rich, he has worked much much harder than anyone else in the company. I am not jealous, I have absolutely no reason to be, instead, I am proud of his achievements, and thankful for saving all the many people from financial disaster (among them my family). The bottom line is, the man at the drill can easily be replaced with another man. But the man at the CEO's room is very hard to replace so that it doesn't lead into total disaster for the whole company. Giving them an equal status is against rational, logical thinking. In front of my eyes, as human beings they get equal status as long as there is no reason to say otherwise. But as a company founder CEO (the man who made the company into very succesful business) and as a man at the drill, their status is not equal and should not be.

Not at all... I think you should consider again what I said. I think you think I mean something I know I don't mean Over-studying! Studying too much compared to what I actually need to know to accomplish some task, like play games. Get it? This is probably hard to explain to people who consider themselves to be some sort of geniouses when it comes to computers... What is the goal of your computer usage? Is it to become a know-it-all computer guru? Is it to play a game for entertainment? Is it to fulfill the formal requirements of your education? With a PC a task of trying to play a game way too often becomes unnecessarily difficult. This is why a console could be the right choice for my entertainment needs (after the girlfriend). With a console a task of trying to create a MathCad document of 6-degree-of-freedom vibration calculations becomes unnecessarily difficult. That's why I need a PC instead of a console. If you get a very good feeling when you micro-manage your computer, both hardware and software, then by all means do it (I have done quite a lot of it myself too and still do). BUT DO NOT EVEN TRY TO IMPLY THAT OTHERS ARE STUPID IF THEY DON'T DO IT TOO!!! (sorry for the yelling but I really think this point can't be stressed too much) If you do that then you have made the technology more important than it actually is. You have made the technology The Thing. Do not give a technology a status it doesn't deserve. Appreciate also other technical products in addition to your personal favourite.

This choice has a lot to do with do you want to be a Computer Mechanic & System Administrator, or do you just want to play games. For the most part of my computer-life I have been an enthusiastic Computer Mechanic & System Administrator, but the more and more I have seen and done, the more and more I have started to feel like "what am I doing?" There was a time when I had to create special boot floppy disks for different games, just to get the games to start! And in those times, I actually liked doing it, because I learnt something completely on my own. Things have evolved from those times into much better. But I wouldn't say that playing games on a PC is an ideal solution, when entertainment, and *only* entertainment, is what is asked for. I don't have a console. I have used them though, enough to see how easy and enjoying it can be to use a console instead of a PC for *entertainment* purposes. *goes off to compile some source code with g++*

For this an answer can also be found from the OFPEC Editors Depot, under functions. Even though you use ArmA, check also the OFP resources at OFPEC, they often are perfectly valid solutions for ArmA too. It's one of the first places you should check.

I think people should also notice that simulating even a somewhat-realistic damage system is extremely difficult. Go meet a Mechanical Engineer who has specialized in Strength of Materials and ask how to calculate the damage a projectile or an explosion will do to a sheet of metal... ...start by studying Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Finite Element Method (FEM) if you want to understand even a little bit of the reply you will get! It's not possible with the current technology to do such analysis run-time in a computer game. So it is very clear to us: for a game you must make serious simplifications. That means you lose most of the "realism" you would like to see. You make a lookup-table: - this kind of projectile doesn't go through this kind of steel plate - this kind of projectile goes through this kind of steel plate - this kind of projectile blows this kind of structure into little pieces - etc... Then at run-time you check that table according to what kind of objects hit each other, and use the result to show the player the effect. No matter how BIS calls their damage system and how they arrange their table, this principle is how they have to do it. And this scheme doesn't take into account the all sorts of possibilities you can get. It only takes into account some pre-determined cases. So the obvious problem is that doing damage calculations is extemely processing power expensive. Thus the situation needs to be seriously simplified. The lookup-table is what you can do. How big a lookup-table BIS creates is a question of how much time they want to dedicate for that task.

hp7130p, I should have made it clear that my comment was not aimed at your comment. I agreed with your post. Of course education rules over ignorance. We have here people who rule some technology as being not good, as being unsuitable for the purpose. I was trying to hint that maybe those people need to go further in their life, study more (by studying I mean anything in life, not just being in school and reading a book), maybe they will see differently then. Maybe they learn to appreciate other technologies too, than just their personal favourite. In my ideology, things can go seriously wrong when a technology becomes THE Thing. It opens a can of ignorance and blindness. I hope I didn't get your comment wrong

To make sure people are not mislead by your comment. Linux/Unix can handle uppercase letters too. It's the application (ArmA) which has problems, not the operating system. Also there is this: file File are two different files in a Linux/Unix file system. I think this situation has to be avoided in the ArmA folder, thus either lower- or uppercase filenames had to be enforced. It doesn't matter which one it is, BIS had to choose only one and they chose lowercase.

Hmmm... worked fine for us. You could make sure you have absolutely no firewall software running and try again. You can unplug the cable which connects you to the Internet so there won't be any threats coming in, thus a firewall would not be needed.

I wouldn't really say that USSR was doing well... One clear example I can give is to have a look at what happened to the areas that belonged to Finland before WW II, and which were taken by the USSR in the so-called peace treaty. I can tell you what happened. Economical and infrastructural progress was drastically slowed, or dare I say, even went backwards in some regard! Take a look at the Karelia in both sides of the border... you will understand what I mean. Another example is Estonia. A country which was at the same level with us before WW II. Fast-forward to the 1980's. Look at the difference! The Soviet system basically made sure that Estonia could not keep up with us in terms of economical or infrastructural development. Fortunately they have made an impressive recovery since they declared independence! The system they were having in the USSR was clearly not working for the benefit of their people. Before you get angry and accuse me of bashing the Russians... ON THE OTHER HAND, I think my country have to thank them for some of the things that happened in the 1800 century... after we got rid of the King of Sweden, our country turned into better in my opinion. The Swedish had been ripping us off, basically. But no more. The Russian Tsar gave us autonomy. Industrialization happened. Our economy developed significantly during those times. BUT do not let this fool you, this happened way BEFORE Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov and his friends took power in Russia (which was about the same time when we declared independence). Â Â Also, it is my personal belief that Finland would not be today an independent state if we had not become part of the Russian Empire for some time. I have actually studied mandatory Swedish in all the schools I have been. Think about how it would have been if we were still part of Sweden... I have to say something about the "one toothpaste" thing you are arguing about. Don't you think that when you take away competition, progress is drastically slowed or even stopped? That is how it goes in reality. The "capitalist" part in our societies ensures that competition is hard, and that in turn means you MUST develop, you MUST bring better products to the markets or you WILL fail. THAT is working for the benefit of the people. If you dream that there some day will be the one toothpaste which has reached the level of being the ultimate toothpaste, you are WRONG. It's never going to happen. The human race LEARNS over time, then goes on and re-iterates over the toothpaste design documents with new ideas. This learning happens mostly because the competitive setting in our economies forces people to find something better to be able to say, "my product is better than yours".

I know about OpenAL that when I updated it to the latest version, sounds in ArmA started cracking... I got WinXP 32-bit and Sound Blaster 128 card. Creative and OpenAL are closely related as I have understood, so maybe the problem has same roots.
