If they use my work, they agreed to my license, therefore they have to provide their work in editable format and their work is freely to use, modify and rework. Once again: They have the right to lock their contents, but not if they use my work because they have agreed to my license. No, it doesn't, it's the opposite: You can use the content freely if you agree to my license or a GPL-like or similar license. You are restricted in usage of the content, if the content is locked. What my license does, is protecting my work and derivative work from being locked; I give everyone the right to freely use my work and i expect everyone who takes advantage in this right, to give everyone else the same rights. If you lock the addon, you clearly show, that you don't want the user to open it, change it and release it. All you do, is allow him to install it and play with it in the mission editor or in missions. This is called restrictive and therefore those addons are not freely to use. It's my right to say, that I want to see my work and derivative work free (as in freedom) and open source.

No, and I am not forcing him. I am not forcing him to use my work, and therefore I do not force him to leave his addon open source. He has to agree to the license to use my work, and therefore he agrees to provide his addon in an editable format. I do not remove his rights, it is his choice to agree to my license or not.
-
You got here something wrong: I am not enforcing anyone to use my GPL-like license. If someone wants to use my work in his addon/whatever he has to agree to this license, if he doesn't agree, he may not use it. So he has the choice: Use my work, release his work in an editable format, or don't use it and lock his work. That's his freedom. And if he agrees to my license, he agrees that I and anyone may use his work and modify, rework, take parts of it, and release it under the same license. (Of course every derived work has to give credits to the original author/s and must be released under different PBO-name, preferably OFPEC-tag.) This is how the GPL works, and this is how my license will work. Of course I can't and I won't enforce any recent user of my work to use this license. If someone used my work before I made the license, the license does not apply, because you have to agree to a license before you "buy" something.

@Suma Not that I want to encourage people of deassembling your game code, but there are countries where it is allowed to reverse engineer code if you can't retrieve information about file formats otherwise (I think Denmark is one of those countries). And not everything in the license agreements is valid in every country, but I guess that Kegetys and feersum are people who bought the game and just want to maximize their fun from it

@Maa and Bobby I feel sorry for you if people criticize you because your model is 1cm too short, or something like that. Your texture and model work is amazing, but what I'm aiming at, is this fair use. @Romulus I respect every addon makers right and I for sure won't release any addon that I changed personally for myself. I asked someone about his MLODs (btw, they are publicly available in a older release, so I just could've ripped those), he said I am not allowed to create them to make a new addon so he won't give them to me. I respected this, now I'm wasting my time by creating a similar addon like his. People will thank me, if they have to download this package because I require it for something special. So I hope, you see that I don't want to rip other people's addons apart without their authorization. What I want is that more people release their addons under free to use and modify conditions. Let's look at Footmunch for example. His addons are high quality lately, every released addon is MLOD. You can guess that I am improving some of them for my personal use, and probably for public release. I even asked him, just to make sure, whether I'm allowed to modify them. And this is what I like; he releases his addons free to use and free to modify. It was his choice to do it like that, but there aren't many people who choose to do the same. And that's my basic question: Why? And that's why I was so lushy with any restrictions on using my work, because it got only recently very popular (before I left the community) restricting usage and modifications. And as this trend will continue, I for sure will release my work under a GPL-like license. I am completely against "licensing" addons or code for a game (people, this is just a game!!!). But as this tendency shows clear into the restrictive direction, I am forced to release my work under a license that protects my work and derivatives from "protection". If people don't agree to my license, it's ok, they just don't have to use my work. It won't stop this behaviour, but at least it'll support those who want an open development process. @Ebud I'm sorry if I attacked or offended you personally, I can't know always the facts, therefore thanks for clearing up the "Tonal objects case".

The windmills bounce around because they are probably defined as a vehicle (ship?), not as a building. And one question: Why did you make the tractor static and not a real vehicle? I think that a non-static tractor would be better, than a static.

I quote myself, to make clear what this thread is about, but you are right, this thread has its origin in the p3dEdit-thread. I don't want you to repeat the argument you posted in the thread, as I don't want to repeat the arguments I posted. @Bobby This thread is not intended to flame CSLA, in no way, but your Mod and Inquisitor are those recently "crypting" their PBOs, and therefore you came into my mind. And because of this, there will be many people who will follow your example, because people tend to think, it is trendy to do so, because the big guys or whoever do so too. But all in all, it's just about opening a Hex Editor and deleting some bytes. Congratulations, you stopped someone for 1 minute from "ripping" your mod or addons apart. And if someone posts how to do this, you flame them, and this is actually disturbing. I don't know why you CSLA people are so emotional, when someone mentions that he opened or wants to open one of your PBOs, because he wants to use them on another unit, just for personal use!!! Please keep cool, I don't ask you and don't force you to place your MLODs on your server, so everybody could change and derive from them (but this would be really cool, and especially if everybody would do so) I know how long it takes to make a really nice model and good textures, but saying that scripts are written in some minutes, whereas addons take forever is just wrong. This isn't very kind to all those people who are working on huge scripting projects like MFCTI, CoC Command Engine and all this complex scripting stuff. And I remember some people saying (I think those were from BAS) that it's the scripting part, that takes most time of addon making. And this depends again on the complexity. And if Ebud allowed 3WX to use his models and textures, then this is a very kind gesture and I think that this should've been from the beginning like this. I think we can keep away a lot of all this stealing and ripping discussions if we turn into a more open development process, and ignore those lamers who don't credit someone.

Blurry texture after setobjecttexture?
vektorboson replied to vektorboson's topic in ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
The problem is most probably in the description.ext, better post your description.ext. -
I've forgotten the Third World Explosion team to mention as a positive example (in the first I did, but I've deleted the section mentioning you). They are doing something which is lacking in the OFP-community: A model and texture repository (here for 3rd world, as I understand). And Ebud, I don't want to flame, but that kind of attitude regarding Tonal objects is something that really disturbed me. This was a kind of restriction never seen before because you forbid the usage of an addon. I know how long it takes time to create objects, but I don't see why I would prohibit the usage of my objects in someone's island? Someone wants to make an african style island, and you say "you may not use our objects!" Well, there are two choices: He either makes his own objects, or he waits until you changed your mind. Because he has no guarantee that you change your mind, he probably makes his own objects, or he abandones it. Anyway, he has to recreate a lot of stuff, that is already available, perhaps he has to learn O2, and perhaps he makes lower quality objects, because all he wanted to do is an island and he just has not the time to learn O2 and to create those objects. I don't see any rationality in this, I don't know why people are so emotional about their creations, that even usage of those is wrong or not allowed. Also I don't deny that there is cooperation among addon makers, there is a lot of. But it could be better with a more open development method of addons. Without all this "do you give me permission"-stuff. As I said, there is no guarantee that an addon maker gives you permission and gives you necessary models. I would like to see more addons which say "here you are, make what you want of it, just give me credit." This is something I'm doing and something I'll do, create some models that may be used among many addons, just a example: Almost every US or NATO fighter plane carries Sidewinders or are able to carry Sidewinders. Well, you can make your own Sidewinder (it isn't that much work, even texturing of it isn't much work) or you there is someone who made a free available model and texture for it. This is something that the ACES-project (hardrock and me) does, but it does more than this. And I imagine that you want to do more than just a sidewinder, you want to make bombs, LGBs, ATG-missiles, whatever. Now, this actually costs a lot of time, time where you could have done something other. And then many fighter planes have the ACES-II ejection seat... I hope you get it. What I want is a model and texture repository for all kinds of models which you can reuse in your addons. Just like with scripts; we have script snippets, why shouldn't we have model snippets? And hey, all that talk about the bad guys and about those thiefs. There always will be people who only take, but don't give. You get upset for a few hours if someone used something from you without permission or without credits to you. But an open development method saves you days and weeks where you can work on your actual project, not on the things which were already done by other people.

Very sweet pack, congratulations! The Farmhouse is one of the most detailled user made addon buildings I've seen thus far (and good usage of proxies). But it has one error: The doors are opened the wrong way, the door handles are near the axis; this is on the second floor with the four rooms. Second thing: You should make transportMaxMagazines = 0; transportMaxWeapons = 0; for the windmills, since you can put weapons and stuff into it. EDIT: Question: How did you make the pool water texture transparent without the soldier disappearing? I can't work it out for myself!

Guys, I want to congratulate you. That is a great demonstration of reasonable and adult acting. Xavier Petit regrets the mistakes he made, and you forgive and allow him nevertheless to use some of your work. This is really great, it would have been better if Xavier Petit asked from the beginning and if you guys from German Airwolf Mod had contacted him before posting that news at OFP.at. AirwolfPL, you actually have my support regarding Gunship and some OFP.at fellows. I think that what they said in the news comments is very unworthy and childish behaviour, therefore I changed my signature.

@Denorc Maybe you have a very weak memory: http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....t=38410

This Mod is phantastic. I hope you guys keep using your weapons and soldiers as they are now, because better graphics != better gameplay. Some suggestions: - make the trees on the map smaller and make them more transparent. as they are now they create some map lag and they hide any structures on the map - the A-10 has a way to big turning radius on ground; hope you adjust the wheelSteeringCoef to a higher value, because even the AI can't use the Taxiway properly - the Mission Editor really could get an overhaul I hope you keep up the awesome work; I think I'll make this my "default" mod to play.

OFP 2: Better get a divorce lawyer now!

@colossus where did you get the error? If you were trying to look at old pictures from this thread, then I'm sorry, I've deleted them long time ago from my server.

Blurry texture after setobjecttexture?
vektorboson replied to vektorboson's topic in ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
You know what the really really weird thing about this is? I used it like 1 year ago, but I never was conscious about it. And recently, I somehow was dumb enough to set the paper of the OFP map, and once I switched between the map and the game, all of a sudden the texture was sharp I can't say whether yes or not, since I did not test it in a full scale battle mission, but I can say, that you really need a time gap between createDialog and closeDialog. <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE"> createDialog Blabla ctrlSetText blabla _unit setObjectTexture blabla ~0.01 closeDialog 0 This code has worked for me, too. It seems that the dialog has to be "on screen" at least to load the texture. I didn't test it yet with loading several textures with the same image control. I'll keep you updated. -
Hi, well, I made some less spectacular work on the F-117 and the pilot; the F-117 has a shadow now and it gets new cockpit textures (that are as detailed as possible with virtually no cockpit references). The pilot had some fine tuning on the O2 mask and some new helmet straps. I made all the LODs for him and I added blood textures, so the pilot is very much ready (but yet I need to texture the gloves and create better textures for his back). Another thing is, I found a way how to prevent blurry textures when using setObjectTexture. I posted the solution in another thread; I'm sad that there was almost no feedback, regarding how many people complained about the blurry textures.

Disable bas cas action for my cti map
vektorboson replied to mad rabbit's topic in OFP : MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING
Just make this animate ["switch1DAPCAS", 1] or any other value than 1, but not 0!!! The only bad thing is, I don't know which side effects this has, so use it with caution. -
I think that they live good enough from VBS1 sales and support... They recently released news about US National Guard (?) using VBS1.

Incredibly humongous jam bug
vektorboson replied to sputnik monroe's topic in ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
@Sputnik Monroe The problem here is, that you shouldn't take Desert Island as your reference, but "real" islands like Malden, Everon, Nogova, a.s.o. I made the hard experience when scripting, that some personal scripts/addons run fine on Desert Island, but the same scripts/addons need not work on any other island. And that's the same if you make some tests with AI. Better use another island, use "real mission"-situations rather than the "pure" tests on Desert island. Then you will really see, whether the units can use RPG and LAW, or not. -

It's the camouflage-value; the higher the easier an unit is seen.

This is an internal thing; I'm talking about released addons that are public to everybody, not some BETA-testers. This would be right, if everybody released their addons as ODOL. But this isn't true, there were times were everybody released their addons as MLOD, and even now some people are releasing addons as MLOD. And I don't see any thefts. And about saying that there happened some thefts, yes I admitted, but they happened in very low numbers (2 or 3 times). And this is contrary to your point that the thefts will skyrocket, even regarding that the community is steadily shrinking and thus your beloved kiddies are leaving. Well, as I began to work with O2 it was really hard to even throw two different parts together. I tried to move a ACOG from HK pack's M16 to a M4 from FlipeR. I think this was hard for a beginner. Now that I am more advanced with O2, it is very easy for me to make such changes, but for your CS kiddie it is hard. That was my point. And even if you throw different parts together, they still don't have to look like they fit together. Perhaps you want a different sound, different weapon behaviour. You have to go all the way through learning addon making - and this is a good thing. I want them to throw different parts together, because this is a first step in Modelling. How many people started addon making by modfying other people's work? No, I won't get the message. Just some examples: - scripts and resources, everybody can copy them, rip them apart, whatever - islands, everybody can rip them apart and modify them - textures, the same - sounds, the same - config.cpp, the same - config.bin, well with a hexeditor and PBO Decryptor Why is the Modeller's work more worth than all the other's? Why should his work be encrypted, but everything else not? One word: PARANOIA. I'll list you the advantages in my eyes: - rework/finish abandoned addons: Someone releases a very nice addon, which needs some final steps or update to current standards, but the addon maker left and so this addon is being forgotten. Someone can take this addon and update it; this is happening with the Hummvee-pack, which was luckily left in MLOD - Modifying for personal use: Someone thinks that he indeed needs a shotgun with a sniper rifle. If he manages to do this, he has got his fun. And with this he made his first steps with O2 or other modelling tool. - the educating effect I learned more through looking at other people's work than through tutorials. There are certainly more people like me, but anyway you need both, tutorials and addons to learn from. - the temporary bug fix Someone releases an addon, let's say a tank; when you switch to gunner view, you see a big white triangle in front of your optics and you can't play as gunner/commander. The addon maker tells you that he will release a bugfix in 2 months, when he fixed all the other bugs. Meanwhile you could have fixed it yourself in one minute... And a last thing I'm gonna tell you: I began as a scripter in the community, I made some innovative scripts, which you can see on my homepage in the download section. Guess what happened to me? Someone released one of my projects under his name, no credits to me (and this happened more recently again, but a little modified). And I hope that everybody has the balls to come over it, after all it's a game, and we're working all towards the one goal to make it better and more enjoyable. If that's not enough for you, it's OK, I respect your opinion. But it's enough for me, and that's why I won't take part anymore in this discussion.

Kind request concerning user made choppers
vektorboson replied to shrike's topic in ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I think that this is a config-problem, if I remember correctly there is insideSoundCoef or something similar. -
I think that this is a relative "small" sum for Microsoft, when you see how much money they have. I would have rather seen that Microsoft was divided as the US courts have decided. Computer buyers shouldn't pay a Microsoft tax, even if they buy a PC without MS Windows; and I think that IE and Windows Media Player should be unbundled with Windows. I really hate to see when people are using Backslashes in the Internet, because it works with IE and Windows. and anyway WMA and WMV Â But all in all, this will do nothing to Microsofts monopoly, and after all this will probably take years in the highest EU court.
