    Linking ArmA 3 with DCS/Combat Helo/Steal Beast

    IMHO, I'd rather see BIS expand the Take On series with Take On Tanks and Take on Planes. That way BIS could improve the simulation of those areas like they have done to helicopters with TOH and possibly feed those enhancements into Arma 3. Plus, there are hardly any tank sims on the market and combat flight sims are usually extremely detailed (Strike Fighters 2 being the only one that comes to mind which hits a middle ground between realism and playability). These are gaps in the market BIS could fill like they have done with TOH by providing a tank sim and a combat flight sim that both strike a balance between realism and playability, have a mission editor, open to mods, MP/SP, support through patches etc. and DLC.

    Sorry, but I just don't see it, unless you're hinting at something different when you say 'interesting'. The show has numerous flaws in argument and methodology that I don't see how it can be taken seriously. On the other hand, there are hundreds of books, journal articles and documentaries out there on the ancient world, created by actual trained historians and archaeologists who have spent years at university, sifting through archives, on hundreds of digs and who continuously debate on their topics that will give one a more accurate and interesting analysis of ancient history.

    It's a show that's meant to be funny, amusing and entertaining - nothing more. The History Channel stopped being a channel about History years ago, now, it's just another entertainment channel.

In addition to the Dismounted Soldier order, the Army is conducting market research on video gaming technologies for a first-person shooter that can replace or improve its flagship game to train individual soldiers and small units. The service currently uses Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2), which offers the ability to operate land, sea and air vehicles in various scenarios via realistic simulations. “We will squeeze as much capability as we can out of the flagship for five years, or as resources allow, and then test the market for new technology,†she says. Thus my question is what are these millions of dollars going to get that the current system doesn't provide? So far all we have seen is that the graphics are a lot better and this isn't taking into account of what VBS2 could evolve into in several years. There's no buckets of money to throw around these days.

    I didn't say that but considering the circumstances the US fighting another major war within the next 10 years is low. After that, heck even within that time, graphics will have jumped ahead of what we have now making the graphics argument redundant. Graphics, IMHO, is not worth millions and a more sound investment would be a proven engine that is flexible and can be upgraded when necessary.

    Don't be so bloody stupid. You said it would help in countering IEDs in Afghanistan since they have been and are a big threat in Iraq and Afghanistan. I simply pointed out that the technology won't be used until 2016 and by that point US and ISAF will have pulled out of Afghanistan as per Obama's withdrawal plan. Hence why I think it is a waste. The cash would be better used, as I said earlier, to, for example, help the troops out there right now.

    What's your post got to do with anything? The article you posted earlier said they would use the current system for 5+ years before exploring other technologies. Obama announced the withdrawal from Afghanistan in the summer of this year to be complete by 2014. So how is the Crytek sim going to help those in Afghanistan identify IEDs today? By the time it's ready US and ISAF troops will be gone.

    Yes, exactly, those millions would be better spent on improving IED countermeasures and training now so there can be tangible benefits for those on the ground now. Not in several years when most ISAF troops will be withdrawn from Afghanistan.

    That has no bearing on my opinion that it is a complete waste of money. Much like how logic has no bearing on your opinion that Crytek is the be all and end all. There are frankly better things that those millions could be spent on.

    I'm not sticking my head in the sand I just find it incredibly stupid to waste millions on something new when a platform that has been proven to be flexible and can be updated to military requirements when requested exists.

    In a time of economic uncertainty can the DoD justify spending millions on a new engine and the high end rigs to run it when, let's face it, at the end of the day they don't need it. If I was looking over their finances I would be asking why they are investing in a platform when they already have one available. I just don't see that "better graphics" is going to cut it as a justifiable reason.

  19. Great little map. I set up a quick mission in the editor with ACE with a USMC squad sweeping a series of peaks featuring random enemy patrols. On one play through the squad passed through a rock cluster. I walked around one of the rocks right into an enemy (fog on almost to full). He fires and misses but my burst gets him and then all hell breaks loose. The other enemy patrols hear the contact and move up to engage us - machine gun and rifle fire everywhere and at close range. Was intense and fun. :)
  20. Thanks, I know about high command but I find that it's less intuitive than CEX and missions with it tend to progress at a fast pace. Though James McKenzie-Smith's great HC template does fix these issues a bit. +1 Great work.
  21. Great set of scripts, will work great with high command, I look forward to trying them out. :) If CEX from ArmA1 was released for Arma 2 it'd be perfect - bit like having Combat Mission from a first person perspective. :p
