Besides upgrading I can only think of one last thing to try http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma2:_Startup_Parameters#exThreads But that is if GPU usage goes down to zero. That means the CPU is bogged down, it doesn't have time to handle GPU-calls. Now, if you have a dualcore, -exthreads might not do much or anything for you. And it doesn't do much for my 8-core AMD either. I've never seen GPU usage go beyond 70% in MP and Total CPU usage stays at 23% pretty much constantly. 70% on 1 core and 10-20 % utilization on the rest. Arma 3 loves CPU, especially Intel-CPUs. The faster the Intel, the better (because Instructions Per Cycle, IPC, is higher on Intels than on AMDs)

Did not read all but... Menus: I have never seen a sexy menu in any game, EVAH. What I love about Arma-series is that Alt-F4 shuts down the game. Only works in a few games. And the tiny fact that when I click 'PLAY', the mouse cursor stays over 'MULTIPLAYER' next. The most common choice I assume. For me it is, 99% of the time. It's the little things. Entering or backing out of menus, not having to drag the mouse across the screen...big bonus. Menu should be useful, otherwise it is USELESS!! The scoreboard sux, I agree. Half the time I can't even see my own score. You know, like the most relevant thing I want to see in the scoreboard...I only play Coop but I still want to see how its going for me, K/D ratio. Last, if you don't like the missions, do your own. You can use the scripting language for exciting scenarios etc.

Just did a quick singleplayer-test with -exthreads=7 in commandline. Arma used mostly core 0, was 60% +. Rest of the 7 cores saw between 10-20% activity. Yes, it used all 8 of my cores. I have noctua as well, temp never goes above 42C and GPU reaches 64C (Radeon 7870) only in furmark. In games I tend to never get above 55C and the card is built to withstand 90-100C.

FPS worse after latest stable update - BIS seriously why_
mamasan8 replied to nikiforos's topic in ARMA 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING
And in the meanwhile we should be satisfied with poorer and poorer performance? Good luck with that attitude because that is exactly what you will get! That is, IF there ever will be any optimizations. I noticed none in Arma 2. I expect Arma 3 to follow the same line. Something did happen after Campaign update. I'm struggling to get over 20 FPS in MP. Before that patch I hardly ever went below 30. Usually in starting base (I&A/Domi) but towns/forest was 30+ FPS. It's starting to look like I never even upgraded my machine. Not acceptable. -
I have a problem with the UI Layout. I've had this happen twice now. Only happened to me since todays update. Once it was the 'Stance/ammocounter/grenade' UI element that got moved to near center of screen. I couldn't change that elements position in Layout mode but could move others. Same was true when I tried Default layout, the 'stance'-element would stay at middle of screen and not be movable. The other time it was the 'Squad'-element. I'm using a custom layout and this problem occurs a few minutes into the game (MP-mode). Of course it is quite intrusive to have an UI element blocking my view of the battle field. I'm wondering if anyone has found a fix for this.

What I mean with CPU-heavy in this case is that Arma 3 relies more on CPU power than GPU power. Stuff like 3Dmark11 and certain other games work the other way around. Those benefit more from OCing GPU. And Arma just using 2 cores has been true (I think) since Arma 2. Why it wasn't 'fixed', who knows. Well, I can think of 1 reason. Not everyone has quadcores. So would the devs have to write 2 different pipelines for those with 2 cores and another pipeline for the rest? How much extra work would that be?
-
Arma 3 is CPU-heavy. You turning graphics to Low means the CPU has to draw those too. If you raise to High instead, those are pushed to your GPU instead. And yes, Intel works better in Arma because it has higher IPC count. (IPC = Instructions Per Cycle/per Hz). Just for reference, I have AMD fx-8350 and ATI HD7870. I get 15-40 fps in MP. Usually around 20. Cause I fight in towns.

I have same issue. I haven't crashed as much as this last week, combined. 2-3 times per day. Everytime the same thing. A hiccup, followed by screen freeze. No error messages, no nothing. Until Windows reports that "a program has crashed". So I just pound on spacebar til that window appears. I only play multiplayer. Domination or Invade & Annex. So, I do get hiccups at other times as well, I'm guessing it is a script run on server (deleting corpses etc-script perhaps, not sure). Those hiccups last for 1 second and my framerate enters single digits and then back to normal. It does not matter how long I have been in game. The game can crash after 20-30 minutes or 2-3 hours in. Has something changed on Stable release recently?

THE AMD R9 290X is now the NEW champion for ARMA3 with @_@ performance at all res!!
mamasan8 replied to wasserkool's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Not only that. To get decent (Titan-equivalent) performance, the card needs to run at 300+ Watt and fan making 72 Dba of noise. Who in their right mind would do that? This card sounds like the AMD fx-9000-series. Way too warm, too power-hungry. A big failure in my book. -
I agree. Semi-automatic on a machinegun, whats the point? And please save those variables until we die. Then you can reset scope range/firing mode/grenade mode etc.
-
Could also be the that they would have to make skins for all the gear you can wear on the male model currently. Rename your guy to Susie, problem solved :P

Thats true, for singleplayer. In MP, nothing works except maybe draw distance. Antivirus/Firewall, I don't use them. I benched with both turned on, running 3dmark11. I lost 300 points. I then overclocked CPU from 3.2 Ghz to 3.8 Ghz and GPU memory + core was overclocked by 200 Mhz each. Those netted me 300 points extra. Now, AV+FW...thats a performance decrease I do not accept. Might not sound like a big deal but when I got 4500 points on stock clocks and no AV+FW it is kind of a big deal, to me. Would be different if I had gotten 30 000 points and lost 300. But when AV+FW looses me almost 10% performance in a benchmark, not OK. Router has FW, Antivirus never once managed to stop viruses from entering my computer. Maybe some lame scripts on a webpage but the real viruses go right thru.

gpu and cpu's allotment in configure
mamasan8 replied to kgino1045's topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Pretty sure particles and clouds are done on CPU only. -
When shooting at a enemy ,i shot like a never play this game before.
mamasan8 replied to WOLF.666.......73's topic in ARMA 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING
"But no the enemy is a superman. He brush of his mates brain of his shoes, and jump to the ground fire a round. Dead again....grrr.. " They are supermen. Next patch should introduce adjustments to AI (devbranch has them), we'll see how that turns out. "Can not play online ,just plopp back to all servers." Don't use ANY mods, not CBA, nothing. And try connecting again. "When I lie down on the ground, so it looks like the ocean when i crawl forwards. Like the ground is floating..." Happens when you use Terrain slider High or above. Use Standard/Low. Rest I have trouble understanding what you mean. -
1rst Person Breathing noises way too loud and unrealistic.
mamasan8 replied to big_t's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I still care. It is annoying. What upsets me even more is that I hear the heavy breathing when driving a Quadbike as well... Only time I'm in 3rd person is when I'm in a chopper, getting transported to AO. Please, please turn it down a notch. Running around is 90% of the infantries job. -
AI Improvements that are tangible, observeable and more enjoyable?
mamasan8 replied to steele6's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
1. AI should have same rules as we have. You run, you get fatigued, your aim sucks. AI can run, stop, remain standing and shoot me in the head in the time it takes me to enter scope-mode. Now you go try doing that. Run, stop, remain standing and try to hit anything smaller than the island. -
NVIDIA PartnerShip and Driver Status and Complain
mamasan8 replied to GranolaBar's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
HwInfo64 has an option called 'Total CPU-usage'. Can use it in conjunction with MSI afterburner via rivatunerstats. To me, that is the only relevant thing to monitor in games besides temp and fanspeed. I've heard (don't know if its true) that Arma 3 only uses 2 cores or threads. 1 for sound and 1 for the rest of the game. I have "8" cores (really only 4 full cores, AMD piledriver chip). CPU usage is around 20% when I play online. Which amounts to less than 2 cores being used 100%. I can't read the text in the youtube-video, too small. Does it say you have 12 cores? -
Two rules I have. I only play infantry. 1. Stay in cover. Hide behind rocks or anything solid like that. And shoot from there. Hiding in a bush is as useful as hiding in the open. 2. If I see enemy, I go prone, behind a rock if its at all possible. They might not have spotted me. My accuracy is much better when prone. And I'm a much smaller target.
-
Also, try without Vsync on. I get stutters in games whenever I have it on. Not in Arma tho, dont have a chance to reach 60 fps.
-
Thats how I discovered the fact. Hwmonitor, together with MSI afterburner, always on when I game so I see exactly what my comp is doing and isn't doing. Which of the powersaving features it is, I don't really care =). I turned off Aero the first thing I did when I got Win7. Together with UAC. Performance is king.

GAME CRASH (no sounds, rebellious AI)
mamasan8 replied to oryang's topic in ARMA 3 - TROUBLESHOOTING
Did you remove everything? The folder arma was installed to? The folder created in 'My documents\Arma 3'? Maybe your profile is corrupted. I would suggest moving your profile elsewhere for a minute to check that. -
Or...it would add annoyance to the game, getting stuck in every house you enter. Or worse, AI getting stuck and you searching for that AI for hours and when you find that AI you can't shoot him, through the wall of the house. Ever ended up under a house? I have, multiple times. As simple as these houses are, they still bug out constantly. Why make it worse?
-
Could we have destructible Shutters inside of houses?
mamasan8 replied to Chocolate's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
Shooting through a window distorts bullet travel path. What you aim for, you wont hit. I get that. Thats realistic. And does it take 1 shot to destroy a window? No, it takes a clip. Which isn't realistic. Shutters should go, imo. I don't think that will happen, unless someone makes a mod. -
All these new patches and we STILL can't use GPS inside the tank driver seat.
mamasan8 replied to Baleur's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
As playing infantry mostly I have one suggestion. My GPS disappears all the time, I don't know why. Maybe because I use scope or whatever. Doesn't matter. What I would suggest is that if I have GPS on and use something that turns it off, when I return to 'normal' mode, turn GPS on automatically. Running - GPS on. Scoping - GPS off. Running again, GPS on. -
Not totally true. If you go to BIOS and turn on cool & quiet, APM, C6 and all the other powersaving features. By default all those are enabled. On AMD-based motherboards (never owned Intel). Heat, especially overheating shortens the lifespan of CPUs (in other words, overclocking and poor cooling). Because of CPU-throttling (and poorer performance as a result) I only run Cool & Quiet. I don't exactly know which of the other powersaving features drops my 4 Ghz fx8350 to 1.4 Ghz when enabled. I suspect C1E or C6.
