  1. Thanks Bulldogs, Solid info :459: Really appreciate it. My specs: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (3.00 GHz) 3 GB RAM 8800GTX 768MB Haven't OC'd anything. Trying a new defragger today (defraggler always stopped at 65% completed). Will see what happens... Laggy
  2. Interesting observations regarding my stutter problem: Like I mentioned in the first post, the stutter problem originally went away with physX turned OFF, until my wonderful Vista updated itself. Then my problem returned again and now there is no solution. I have created a "Lag test" mission in Chernogorsk, with many groups. 1- The stutter has absolutely nothing to do with number of units on the map (within viewDistance), so it is not an "overload" lag. One single unit in the same place makes no difference. Also, it only happens when moving, like every 20 meters or so in any direction, almost like some kind of invisible grid. The stutter reoccurs with even intervals if I keep moving in the same direction. 2- While playing around with physX ON or OFF before starting the game + turning video memory to Normal or Very-High, I have noticed this: The game can all of a sudden run great with no stutter. Steady FPS between 17-23. I then turn off ArmAII and restart with the identical settings... stutter hell. Terrible FPS drops down to as low as 6... unplayable. There is obviously something with the settings that doesn't stay after turning off ArmAII. When the game runs great I have just turned physX ON or OFF, before starting up, but the good FPS status no longer last for more than that particular ArmAII session. Any ideas? Laggy
  3. The music that starts when you die and respawn in MP is great for the atmosphere. However, it goes on for too long and is too loud, it becomes very distracting. My suggestion is to shorten it to around 10 seconds, and make it slightly lower in volume. Laggy

    Military Humor

The best memory from my year in the navy, is one drill/exercise where the whole division was involved. The command ship, with the division commander on board, all of a sudden sent us the message "You are detached", which meant the drill was over and we could break formation. This message was sent by a signalist through optical morse code (using lamps), and being the signalist on our ship, it was my duty to respond. I did so with the routine "Roger". As there was apparently some misunderstanding, this "optical" communication followed: Command ship - "You are detached" Me - "Roger" Command ship - "You are detached" Me - "Roger" Command ship - "You are detached" (By this time I thought the guy on the other ship was breaking my balls, so I changed attitude) Me - "Eat shit" Command ship - "?" Me - "Eat shit" Command ship - "?" Me - "Go and die, will you" (Long pause...) Command ship - "You should collate" (This means to pass on the information to other ships, which I didn't know was routine) Me - "Roger" I did collate and naively thought everything was fine now. Two minutes later I heard an alarming message on our ships intercom. - "The signalist who optically signaled "EAT SHIT !" to the command ship, is to report to the division commander, asap, when back at base." Little did I know, that the commander himself had been holding the signaling lamp after the communication got confused, and he was trying to "straighten out" the misunderstanding. The anxiety and embarrassment was compensated by the fact that I was now the "hero of the day" on our ship. Even some officers laughed at the delicate "situation", I was in. As you might suspect, I was never really the kind of guy who loved the military in real life. In a computer game, it is much more rewarding... Laggy

    Military experiences past/present/future

I served in the navy for one year, Swedish "surface strike division" on a high-speed missile ship (Robotbåt in Swedish). Can't say I enjoyed it, no sleep, no PT, and eating 24/7 really turned you into a useless bastard. You got good at pretending to be busy though. However, it was fun watching even the captain get seasick in the storms of November. Navigating with one hand, and holding the puke-bag with the other. The newer ships had something called "vomators" (basically urinals at face height), ours didn't, it was just the fastest. Laggy
  6. There is one aspect of the AI behaviour that I and many other mission designers have longed for since OFP. To explain the idea, let's call it objective/survival priority factor. What I mean is that in real life the military leaders (and the people involved with the operations) are aware of an undeniable fact: To achieve important goals AND save lives in a greater perspective, you sometimes have to accomplish certain objectives no matter what. Even with great numbers of casualties. Example 1 - A convoy transporting wounded out of a hot-zone. They would never stop or get out of their vehicles to engage the enemy. They would haul ass out of there, if they were attacked. Example 2 - The Omaha beach assault on D-day. Those soldiers knew that their survival depended on getting past the MGs and shellings. The worst thing they could do was to stay in the line of fire. What would seem natural for soldiers to do in those situations, is not possible to achieve with the AI in ArmAII to my knowledge. I wish that BIS would look at some kind of way to solve it. I know that many share my view, and a solution to this problem would make the warfare simulation much more realistic and unpredictable. "Man those guys just won't give up, why is this hill is so important to them?" - Who knows? The enemy's agenda on a grand scale becomes very relevant. A simple factor, objective/survival (90/10, 50/50 or 10/90) depending on the situation would implement something important in this great game. A simple waypoint could have this priority factor set. Right now it seems like the AI always treats every situation like a battle that has to be fought and won on the spot, and always with the same priority, which is not always true in reality. Thoughts? Improve DISMISSED waypoint

Hmmm... Thanks for the info, I have to check this out in ArmAII.

A way to remove profanity II

Hi all, I find this thread very amusing, and I can understand/respect everyone's different point of view, sort of. However, can we not talk about something more important in the world of combat simulation? Like this: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=82536
  9. Thanks for the kind words! Well, it will be inspired by an old classic war movie called "Kelly's Heroes". You will play a group of "rotten apples" who wish to gain some personal "wealth" during the war in Chernarus. Humor and playability will be an ingredient again, I hope. Hope that gives you an idea. Improve DISMISSED waypoint

Are you sure of this? I have used "DISMISSED" WPs extensively since ArmA, and a switch trigger has always worked for me, when getting i.e - a dismissed tank team to get in their tank and "HOLD" after enemies were detected, by other units. Laggy
  11. True, but instead of having to create advanced FSM scripts (weird, difficult stuff) a simple priority factor would solve 95% of (our specific) mission editing woes.
  12. Thanks Bulldogs and MrCash! I'll try all the ideas so far, but I have little hope of solving this, maybe next patch... :banghead:

A way to remove profanity II

If you call it the ultimate combat simulator - Then, in terms of language and the horrific nature of war, it should be able to offer you exactly that, if you want. I thought of a solution, instead of having several different game options, you just have one, called "Reality Factor". Low - No swearing, no blood, no agony, Medium - Limited swearing, blood, some agony - like moaning and coughing. High - Unlimited swearing, gore and dismemberment, serious agony - wounded units crying for help as their guts are on the ground, or walking around in chock with a missing jaw. That way every kind of preference is covered. No one needs to be offended or disgusted. Everyone wins... Maybe something for ArmAIII?
  14. Why should I try going back to the 186.18 drivers? The stutter problem started again when they WERE my GPU drivers. I only upgraded to 190.38 to see if that would help, and it didn't. My PC doesn't update the GPU drivers unless I do it manually. Before the da*n Vista update, turning physX OFF was the solution, now... NO! It makes no difference if I use 186.18 OR 190.38 drivers. You really should read my post with the Harley metaphor. Laggy

    Project Aus

Looks great! Hope you put in SASR as well, since any good SAS addons are scarce, even though they are the most reputable special forces in the world. One weird note though... It might be a good idea to change the name of the mod to "Project Australia", if that works just as well for you. Good work and good luck! Laggy

  17. Well, must be quite hard to make/keep your program compatible with an OS that cloogs up on itself. No wonder, however unfortunate, that many gamers go to concole instead, at least they are not "evolving" all the time... or is that incorrect too?
  18. OK, this will be my last rant in this direction, since I/we are getting off-topic... kind of. You have two kinds of OS users: 1- Like me, I buy something and just want it to work. I don't care about the latest effects and options that are forced upon me. I have no interest in putting endless hours of work into something I shouldn't have to. The results are never satisfying or long lasting anyway and I don't have time for it. 2- Users that enjoy tweaking, customizing and spending days of finding the ultimate solution for their system. This also requires a good deal of knowledge. A good parallel is motorcycles: You have people who love Harley's and people who hate them. If you want to be a satisfied Harley owner, you have to enjoy fixing it continuously. If you don't enjoy fixing and tweaking, you most likely get another bike, or buy a new one every two years, just like in the insane computer world. I guess I wouldn't get a Harley if I was into motorcycles, but at least bikers have an option.
  19. OK, good for you, but you have a VERY high spec computer. I'm not talking about the owners of 5 year old laptops, that installed Vista on their ancient machines. I'm talking about people who bought a new computer with Vista pre-installed. Why would you make an OS that is resource hungry to the point that 75% of the users suffer from it, because they don't buy a high-end computer? This is me (dual core 2 @ 3.0 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 8800GTX) moving two windows around, nothing else. I don't think its acceptable.
  20. Well, without saying that this information is definitely true, I don't trust any information until its proven correct, but I have "overheard" that Microsoft will let all Vista users buy Windows 7 for a cheap price when it's released, simply because they know that most people are very disappointed with Vista. Why are they releasing Windows 7 only two years after Vista, it doesn't make sense if it really was a good product, does it? People telling stories of the CPU working 100%, when you just move a window on your desktop... How can that be a good thing?
  21. Textures Normal and video memory High is done, made it slightly better. Thanks! Don't get this part. You lowered view distance to 1600 and then you could for some reason put it on 3000 ??? I still don't get how the performance can be affected over night, after Vista has done one of its "fantastic" updates. Still feel sorry for BIS. Laggy
  22. Well, did a complete defrag... no difference. I kept the new 190.38 nvidia drivers and physX OFF. Vertical sync OFF makes the game look terrible when you move and I have never had to do that before anyway. To explain my problem, it is not an overload kind of lag, as in too many units or too high settings. It's the texture load stutter again. The game is smooth as soon as the textures have loaded, but as soon as I start running around, and new textures have to load my FPS drops from 23 to 9. When I start a mission in Chernogorsk or Elektrozavodsk the game also freezes for the first 10 seconds, while loading textures. I used to have this problem when 1.02 was new and I still had physX ON, turning it OFF made a huge difference. Now the physX OFF doesn't seem to do the trick anymore, and like I said, it started after a Vista update. No changes regarding ArmAII. The only thing that made a small improvement (but still with bad FPS drops) was to set video memory to very high. Any ideas?
