  1. Yeah actually I'm wondering about that line of questioning too. I made a mission where a lone sniper hides in the Bystrica forest and fires on enemy forces in a town from a distance. The idea of the mission was to keep moving through the woods, inflicting damage, then moving off through the cover again, taking advantage of a scope and range... but when I tried to hit a checkpoint, the guy on the 50cal (RHS) picked me off quicker than I could even get my aim straight on him. I'd fire, miss (because of the range), then get chopped in half my a hail of 50cal. And that's prone on the ground, as close to the corner of a tree as possible to aim without the gun barrel being obstructed! I mean IRL, I don't even know if someone without a scope could even spot a target like that- let alone drill it with only 3 rounds fired. I haven't even revised that mission yet, because the laser aim really defeated the whole concept behind being a lone gunmen against a town full of defenders. I think at the time I figured everyone was laser aiming equally (so didn't bother just taking the HMG out), but now Lukio mentions it, it really was only the 50cal hitting me every time.
  2. You know what, it's not nearly as easy as you say it is. Last time I looked at all this, I spent over an hour trying to set up a mission, because every single tutorial or video I found was out of date. Even the website tutorials had gaps! I had to come on here and ask if there was even a function to have tasks auto added (how I learned about c2istar.. or what ever it's called). That wasn't on the website, but some obsolete things were. The worst part about it was going through all the steps of a video or what not, then getting instructions on a module which doesn't even exist anymore! So yeah, it might be easy if you get the right instructions, but if you land on one of the other far more numerous out-of-date tutorials or video's- you'll just wind up confused and frustrated about spending free time on nothing. By the way, I do want to make my own missions. All I do when I play ARMA is make my own single player missions. That's why I asked for templates and not just plain missions. With a template I can start off just quickly tweaking things, but the more I use it, the more I will be familiar with the modules required... without having to alt-tab 100 times to go back and forward from a tutorial to add each piece in one at a time. I'm off to go look at the wiki now.
  3. Can anyone please point me towards (up-to-date) templates for Alive? I barely have time to play ARMA lately, so don't really want to spend all my free time reading (out-of-date) tutorials or watching (out-of-date) video's, featuring modules that aren't even used anymore. I seen there is a Kunduz insurgency template, and I fired it up, but I'm not sure what I'm even meant to be doing. I just drove around (I didn't get any mission updates... maybe I broke that while trying to change factions?) I found the 'Sample Missions' part of the Alive website, but when I tried the Zagrabad mission, It had modules marked 'Depreciated' and said not to use them. When I pressed Preview (in editor), it started with a bunch of errors, so I just closed it and assume it's not going to work because of all that. Anyhow, has anyone collected a bunch of (still working) templates for basic Alive scenarios? EDIT: Ok a different search phrase has found this kind of topic (started May 7) on the Alivemod.com Forum. http://alivemod.com/forum/1059-mission-templates There's a couple templates there, maybe more soon.

Thanks for the new update :292: I've waited a little while to bring this up again, since I know you have a lots to do already with core content, buuut- what's the chances of having some suicide bombing features added in? :ok: Ok well, download finished, I'm off to give the new version a go.
  5. Holy Cow! This is one of those things where I didn't notice it at the time, but now you have pointed it out it's impossible to miss! I can't believe I never really noticed how grey the game is! I mean I did notice I thought rainy weather made the graphics look crap, but I didn't put much thought into why. Now using this reshade thingie, I'm pressing the Scroll Lock key to toggle the changes on and off and I'm finding it hard to believe the game usually looks so dull. I mean seriously, it's made me wonder if pressing the key really is 'turning it off' and showing me how it was... There is no way I will be able to play again without Reshade. Thanks for the preset, it saves me the hassle of tweaking for ages to get it right like you have.

    Iraqi-Syrian Conflict

Sorry mate, you don't know what you are talking about. You follow the Syrian civil war on reddit? I have personally typed 15,235 words of notes following the Syrian and Iraq conflicts for post 2011. I have wrote/edited many of the pages on Wikipedia in regards to to the war and related groups. You talk about the difference between the groups being a terrorist label, but that isn't a relevant difference (especially not for this mod). Did you know that Jabhat al-Nusra was formed by al-Qaeda's official branch in Iraq, and led by veteran al-Qaeda operatives, yet it took a year before the US designated them as a terrorist group? Would you tell me that al-Nusra and al-Qaeda were 'different' in that year, but with a click of the US's designating finger, they were suddenly the same? The exact same set up with al-Nusra being formed by ISI/al-Qaeda has occurred with the YPG being formed by the PKK. The only reason why the YPG hasn't had the official label is because they aren't a threat to the US and no attacks against Turkey have been claimed in that name- yet individuals who are members of the PKK and have fought/killed Turkish forces serve in the YPG ranks and are in the leadership. Beyond the technicality of who has 'officially' declared who- there are 'unofficial' accusations against the YPG as being a terrorist group and wholly a subsidiary of the PKK (and thus attributed to all the acts of the PKK). For example, here is one random news article titled "A U.S.-designated terrorist group [YPG] is saving Yazidis and battling the Islamic State".. It calls the YPG "an offshoot of the PKK", and also states; "Portraits of Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed founder of the PKK and a hero to many Kurdish nationalists, are ubiquitous in YPG camps". Here is another link where a Turkish presidential spokesman called them the "terrorist YPG". I can't engage in a lengthy debate or continue giving more references, as that would be getting off topic from the mod this thread is about. I have said as much about I did though, because I want the mod to be an accurate reflection of the conflict. There is no point making a separate YPG faction from the PKK- unless you really really care about small cosmetic things like arm patches. Also to repeat another point, which you didn't mention but is also in the same basket for misunderstandings, the YPG/PKK must be separate from the Peshmerga, as they are ideologically different, manned by different people, and have different allies (hence why the West and even Turkey are pouring aid into the KRG, but they barely did anything to directly help the YPG in Kobane).
  7. Thanks for the update... Anyone else caught in the news how the real Kunduz province is kicking off crazy right now? Apparently about 2/3 of the province is back under Taliban control... a bit of inspiration for mission makers?

    Iraqi-Syrian Conflict

Ok to begin with, I'm pretty sure anyone can join the PKK... you interested? (keep in mind they are a terrorist listed organisation :p). And as I already said, the YPG are PKK- the former is a sister group which was formed by the latter. So in that way, any foreign fighters joining the YPG are actually joining the PKK... which is why there has been so much debate about any Western support in battles such as Kobane. Many have been asking (and Turkey has been crying about) the legality of arming the YPG when they are part of a terrorist listed organisation. It's why the US instantly threw themselves behind the Peshmerga, but only at the last minute bailed Kobane out with air-strikes and very very few ammunition drops. As I already said, the only difference between the PKK and YPG is where the fighter is standing. When the PKK fighters cross from Turkey into Syria to fight there, they 'join' the YPG... and by join I mean change the patch on their jacket, but continue to fight for the same overall ideology (marxism/Kurdish nationalism) and organisation. In fact there is actually tension between the groups over several issues- one being the PKK/YPG over-staying their welcome in Shingar and raising their own local militias there from the Yazidi's. The KRG is worried about this encroachment on their territory and the potential for it to be anexed by the PKK/YPG. Bringing it all back to the mod and your final point, the PKK/YPG should not be mixed in with the Peshmerga. They are 2 totally separate organisations with different authorities and ideologies (the Peshmerga are not Marxist) Also if both the PKK and YPG are added, I think they can (probably should be) be added with one faction, with sub-factions to alter any flag on uniforms, etc.

YPG are PKK. When the PKK operate in Rojava, they go under the banner of the YPG. There is little difference between the forces bar the spelling of their names and where the soil under their boots is. However just for some clarification, and possibly better understanding, the Peshmerga are not PKK. And not just because of spelling or area of operation, but by leadership, ideology, and practically every other factor (other than that they are both Kurdish).
  10. It's the stupid game loader's fault. Steam used to ask if you want to open the game or open the launcher. Now as of late it just chooses the loader. I hate the loader, it's stupid. And yes, is does mess with BCombat, Fab mentioned something about it wiping stuff not long ago. Anyway there is a way to avoid the stupid loader and not have to manually add parameters. Simply go to (your relevant drive letter here -->) c:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Arma 3\ find your arma3.exe file, right click hold and drag it to the desktop. Let go on the desktop and choose the option create shortcut here. You will need to have steam open first, but just load the game from that shortcut. In the game's main menu you go to Configure and then Expansions and simply load the mods there with a check box. Although you need to reboot for any enabling/disabling takes effect, it's way easier to do that adding text commands.
  11. You mean this thang? http://www.ausisland.com
  12. In case you still needed to know, here are 2 links to pictures which show on the map 2 locations the AI ghosted through the walls (before your 1.05 update). This one is the one near the weed: http://goo.gl/zAtnYL Here is the other area, but I can't remember the very exact spot it happened. Within a couple meters from here: http://goo.gl/WM3bgh
  13. BUGS: While playing yesterday in the town Ka Shek I saw AI walk through mud walls in 2 different locations. Sorry I don't have the waypoints but I have some photo's. If the photo's are no help, i'll try to find the spot in the editor (where no one is shooting at me). Here you can see a limb hanging through the wall. The AI just walked straight through that spot. Here is the same location but looking back the other direction. The point is in the corner of the walls near the weed. Hm ok it appears I didn't save the other picture/location to steam. I will find the spot I remember it happening and send a picture of the map with a player icon on the spot. I didn't think at the time to check if a player can walk through the same places the AI did.
  14. There already is weed in this map :P
  15. Ok I'm still having problems loading too. At first I thought it was Helvantis, because that map loaded from saves, but now it's going to SMD Sahrani when I load.
  16. This map is excellent, but I've had a couple issues: 1) Helvantis map conflict? I made a mission and saved it to the single player scenario. After playing for maybe 20 minutes (reloading to the start lots, cause I made it real hard with no saves) I suddenly had FPS drop to literally less than 5 FPS. Since all the time playing prior was decent speed, I figured I should probably restart A3. When I went back to the scenario and clicked Resume, it ended up loading the map Helvantis. I restarted the mission and at another random time period I had the FPS die again... and again when I quit and come back to resume it loaded Helvantis. I have no idea if it's something from my end or if there is some kind of conflict with these 2 maps? Anyway I just disable Helvantis. I don't know if it was related or not, but since playing the same scenario again, I haven't had the FPS die (though I haven't played it again heaps since then). 2) Can briefly see through compound walls on certain angles. I don't know if it's just A3 or if it's something you can fix, but when you get real close to brown compound walls, you can sometimes see through them on certain angles. It's happened to me a few times while creeping along a wall and then looking towards it, for a second it's like the camera clips right through. This maps is seriously good though. I mean I even like how the ground isn't all flat. You can close in on open ground, but still hit the dirt and find a little bit of cover behind the lumpy ground.

I've kept trying to load up DEV here and there since before this mod was released, and i'm getting CTD too. I don't even know which mod is causing it (cause I run about 4 million..), but it's an error with DEV- not the mods. There is nothing this mod maker can do to fix dev's CTD's. ---------- Post added at 06:38 ---------- Previous post was at 06:29 ---------- Hm use better equipment? Like what? Are we talking rifles or vehicles? As far as I know (...though i'm not an expert), there are no vehicles or weapons especially reserved for one section of the Syrian armed forces... just maybe better stocking of the same equipment (as in same T-72 or BMP, just more likely to be present with the battalion). So basically, if you wanted to simulate a Republican Guard company... just give them a BMP or two.. and that's it. Want them to be regs? Well, give them a BTR instead. ETC. As far as arm patches though, I'm not the mod maker but I hardly see that as warranting a whole new faction to include it. As a mission maker, it would be a pain to have the factions list chocked full of 'different' factions who simply have different arm patches. ---------- Post added at 06:49 ---------- Previous post was at 06:38 ---------- @AccuracyThruVolume , I made a list of bugs/issue's with the mod... erm then I lost it (kids probably ripped it up), but here is what I can remember off the top of my head: 1) Units sometimes start with no gun. I have seen this with both SAA and IS. 2) Nusra don't have enough ammo. They only have 2 mags each or something like that. 3) Nusra machine-gunners (or what ever they are called) start with no ammo at all. 4) IS have no AA units. Although I don't think they would have heaps, there should be a random chance of a MANPAD being spawned with a squad, or at the very least, there should be an AA unit in the individual unit list.

Can you briefly sum up how the Syrian Republican Guard are different than the Syrian Arab Army? That may help his decision.
  19. Man nearly all the tutorial video's our out of date and talk about modules that don't exist anymore :936: I think i've cobbled most of it all together to make an insurgency style mission, but I have 2 problems: 1) Where the heck is the function that used to be called 'Military Sector Display'?? I don't know how to make the map show where friendly and enemy occupied territory is. 2) Is the mod meant to set tasks? I saw something like that at the end of and (old) video. If I don't get a task, how do I know where the fighting is going on or what my team is doing? Sorry if this is basic knowledge but there are no good current guides that I can find. Even on the actual ALIVE website, they have OLD video's with module names that aren't there anymore X_X. Edit: wait, stand by, I just found a note on one of the video's talking about some c2istar...

I don't know anything at all about Canadian internet, but 'fast as it gets' there may not be fast enough to play someone on the other side of the world. That's the case for Australia at least.... but we do rank lower in speed than Kazakstan.. so yeah :j: Ok I know a little bit more about Canadian internet now, here is a ranking page which says your internet is twice as fast as Australia: http://www.netindex.com/download/allcountries/ KOTH is King Of The Hill. It's a 3 way team battle to control a zone by having the most players in it, scoring points for time intervals they are the dominate team until 1 team reaches the winning score. You can not mix mods with KOTH servers. For example, if you use JFyre sound mod, you will have to disable it to join a KOTH server... even though only yourself will hear the sound difference and it wont give you any edge. That sucks but there is nothing that can be done from the joining players end. Even more incompatible would be trying to mix weapons or factions mods into it. In KOTH you purchase and unlock weapons, so even if the server loaded up with your mod weapons, it won't have them in the menu to choose because they weren't put there by the mod maker. So basically, the only way you will be able to play this mod (or any) online is if the server has it enabled and the scenario or what not actually using the modded stuff. That's why I say your best chance of playing it online is if you find a circle of friends to start a server and a scenario to play together. ---------- Post added at 06:16 ---------- Previous post was at 06:11 ---------- Islamic Front is a coalition of many rebel groups. You can't add a coalition as a single faction, as they are all unique and may split from each other at any moment. For example, a group called Suqour al-Sham was in the IF coalition until they were routed by IS, and now they have defected to the latter as part of their surrender.

Hey for a start dude, what country are you in? Unless you have a crazy good connection, you will likely need to find other players from the same region. Beyond that, I think if people are playing it online then it will probably be on a private server with a known circle of friends. They will also probably have made a scenario to play as co-op. The mod hasn't actually been released for very long so I don't think you will find any dedicated and public servers running it... pretty much all I ever see on my server list (in Australia) is King Of The Hill, Epoch, and vanilla anyway. I think your best bet for getting a game going online would be to rope as many of your friends together to play a scenario one of you makes. Maybe there is a section of this forum where you can meet some people in your region to play online with? Personally, I only use this mod for single player scenario making and only ever venture online to play a little bit of KOTH, but not for over a month now. I wouldn't mind playing some co-op missions, but I don't have a circle of friends who play ARMA... plus I have terrorists (young children), which make playing a game without a pause button very difficult.
  22. I've only ever used this for single player scenario making. Edit: Oh do you mean the single player missions released by BI? Well i'm hardly an expert opinion on this, but I would say "not really". I mean for a start you would have to open the MCC menu and then go and set all the AI to gaia during the mission. You would also have to create zones for them to be gaia in relation to. All of that is possible, but the missions weren't designed to be used that way. While you may get some to go right, others will be thrown out of wack when AI doesn't do the things they were set up to do by the mission makers. So yeah, kinda maybe for some, but in general, not really.
  23. lol I wouldn't call $3k "quite a bit of money". But really, even if it were $3 million, what's there to be curious about? They can spend it all on coke if they want and not even need a cent for the map production... people willingly gave that money away, so yeah, nothing left to wonder about there. Is it Saturday yet? What, Thursday? God if only you guys weren't so darn cheap (only giving $3k) it would have been done by now  :D
