Flying

Recommended Posts

At the time I was not registered* so I couldn't comment.

How about this 'coz I noticed that nobody mentioned it there...

*(pain-in-the-ass-procedure)

Instead of going 3rd person, which is good an' all, get in using cockpit view and then use freelook which I think by default is '*' key. That way when flying u can control where u fly with direction keys as well as look where U WANT TO instead of these problems I read about regarding having to fly where u look and jerkiness of the aircraft and crashing into things when trying to target etc. It is GREAT being able to fly straight and yet pick up targets visually at 3 or 9 o'clock epecially when in steep turns.

Another bonus I find is if when flying...use your standard strafe keys to bank the chopper and then have keys handy (this is for all u who dont have joysticks 'n shit) to use as rudder. The rudder doesn't respond when flying at speed but, if the heli is banked hard, pulled back a little to reduce speed, the rudder movements work brilliantly-ideal for fine tuning those movements to target using FFAR.Also, during air-air combat, the rudder is awesome combined with rolling to turn around and get on the opponents ass quickly!

I would agree that 3rd person has its advantages...but I find that this is best when hovering along scanning for that one infantryman slinking off or hiding in the trees or for refueling and rearming while hovering. But hovering is dangerous...'specially if the lad was sporting an AA launcher...ouch.

AA launchers are harmless unless 75% of their squad has one strapped on their back. LAW/RPG is your biggest threat when hovering. they'll knock you out in one hit

Right U are Lord, and that makes me wonder...is that correct or jus' a bit of a fuggup? I mean what the hell is the point if u cant down the S.O.B. using one shot...seeing as u can only carry one AA anyways. Hmm summing tells me it be a bug. Am I wrong? do tell all u military hardware techies and Power Houses of Knowledge of all things warlike? tounge.gif

i guess it's a "balance" issue so the n00bs flying around feel safe

i've seen a video of a stinger hitting a hind. it pretty much ripped it to shreads.

I've often wondered about the inability of AA missiles to take down some of the choppers with one hit.

I know Hind's are tough and all, but come on!

I agree with you on that one, but only when Im on the ground tounge.gif

When Im in the air, I would be extremely upset if one puny grunt could blow my beautiful chopper out of the sky smile.gif

Although in fairness, those missiles have a nasty habit of causing a chopper to go inverted, which is a condition that is not easily corrected at low altitudes, especially for a Hind smile.gif

I think there should be a random factor for each individual aircraft which determines a likelyhood of it surviving a missile hit, but most of the time it would go down. For example, both the A-10 and Su-25 are known for having survived SAM hits.

In that case however, BIS should also implement countermeasures, such as flares, and Missile Launch Warning System (No this is NOT an RWS, and yes I am aware that all the AA missiles in OFP are IR guided). A MLWS actually detects the heat signature of an incoming missile when it is close to the aircraft, giving the pilot a last-second chance to take evasive action.

Then again the whole handling of aircraft should me made less arcadish.

A beeping-warning should be implemented for all choppers so that you know if someone is tracking you. This might not be reallistic for the Hip, Chinook and Blackhawk. But it would improve gameplay I think smile.gif

The Newer versions of the Hip has RWS, not sure about the Chinook and Blackhawk but I would guess they do too. However, it would not be realistic since all the missiles are IR guided. The only unit in the game which should set off an RWS is the Shilka (The Vulcan's radar is only a rangefinder).

A Missile Launch Warning System, like I mentioned above, should help though.

here's what i'm thinking could be easily implemented

make them take out or cripple a chopper in planes in one hit

but "what about countermeasures that would be unfair" you say? read on

you calculate the probability for the missile to hit IF they are using countermeasures, then simply put that in the accuracy/probability for the missile to hit. that would give you the power to take them down in one shot, but the simulation of the countermeasures to fool the weapon. that make any sense? biggrin.gif

I think that if they increase the damage of AA-launchers people start using them as AT-launchers since you can lock the target. But indeed it should be one shot one down. Cobra and OH58 are only choppers that can fired down with one missile. But there's a tactic, when the chopper is flying low with high speed and you hit it with AA-launcher the chopper looses its controls for a while and usually crashes. This is quite good tactic in MP but also in SP.

seems like it would be easy enough to make it ineffective against armored targets which is true in real life because (i believe) AA warheads send out shrapnel which is not effective against tanks, thus there is no AA/AT missile system. a PK won't damage an M1-A1 but it will damage a AH-1.

Perhaps this is old news.....but...

I can't keep them thar planes in the air. How the fiddle feck do you set the throttle to 100%?

I have pressed "Q" and have also pressed the UP Cursor but the planes (inclusing Gimbals) eventally loose RPMs and fall from the sky.

Now, I think I have to keep pressing the UP Cursor to stay in the air but this is cumbersome as I have a joystick, and I need 2 hands to hold it.

In most flight simulators, you can press a key once to set the throttle to 100%. Can you do that in OPF?

the throttle on my joystick works, also when you're not holding down a key by default it moves the same as pressing the w key. if you keep stalling out stop putting the nose up so high

I am not stalling the plane(s). It seems that they have no umph.

My joystick has 4 buttons: one is fire, one toggles targets, one zooms in, and one toggles weapons. There is no throttle on me joystick.

So, do you push the UP Cursor and that's it? Do I or do I not have to keep pushing UP to stay in the air?

the thing about having an RWR on the helo's...just isnt realistic. i know some helo's have them, but Stingers and other man-portable SAM's are almost always Passive IR guided, making them impossible to be detected when they are traking something, Scince they emit no energy waves themselves, they only look for other sources to home in on.

Oh, and BTW, i have a Saitek X45 FCS....eat it
