the campaign is dynamic depending on choices that you make during some of the missions. But probably with any given line of the story you might get about 10 missions. But you also need to understand that Manhattan mission, and to a much greater degree, the Dogs of War mission are large sandbox type missions where you literally have multiple tasks. Dogs of War alone could have possibly been split into 5 different missions.

thanks for the reply. so in terms of gameplay hours, is it comparable with the 30-some odd missions of the original OFP?

Not really. I think it took me longer to play OFP but back then I was also learning the complex command system. I didn't play ARMA I but I was able to learn ARMA II fairly easy although there are some new things to learn.

Another thing about ARMA II is that you will probably spend a good amount of time working around bugs and AI glitches. I probably could have completed the campaign in about 2/3 the amount of time it actually took me if there were no bugs. But don't let the bugs scare you. It's still fun if you're a fan of the original OFP.

Also, you shouldn't worry about the amount of content per money spent on the game. Scenario designers have already released many single player and multi-player missions as well as a few campaigns. The replay value is infinite. Also there are new maps that you can download which are very good quality IMO.
