ARMA 2? huh?

Recommended Posts

I get the same kind of mixed reviews, but I think it's a case of when you create a mission it's in a small chunk area, but when you play the open game you can move across the whole map. I think this is because they use complex scripts to spawn enemies in the open game (unlike Arma 2 where everything is spawned at the start of the mission).

OFPDR does seem to have a very good terrain streaming system, but it can only show its full potential in single player. Multiplayer scenarios have to be strictly limited due to engine constraints - adversarial MP is played in 2x2km² boxes and in coop the team is tethered together. This is likely due to the unit number limitations the game has - since the engine can only have 63 entities active at any one time, is has to keep spawning and destroying other units to keep the action centered around the player team.

Allowing the players to split up and explore different places at the same time would not work, because they would have to activate more entities than the engine can handle.

Adversarial MP is obviously limited for the same reasons. Game modes covering the entire map (like Evolution, Domination or CTI) will be absolutely impossible in DR because the engine simply can't handle the large unit numbers.

probably didnt know about the OF: DR thread stashed away in off topic!

Its much less "stashed away" than the equivalent ArmA thread on the codemasters forum... ;)

As for "cut from the same cloth" that may have been true 2 years ago, but now dragon rising is more in the same vein as CoD, BF and the other shooters - given the massive limitations which have been introduced.

The only reason people continue to make comparisons, is because of the 2 words "operation" and "flashpoint"

If the game had been named something else: dragon rising. then comparisons between it and ArmA would be few and far between...

I bought the OFP DR last night but so far I only have demo of Arma2.

I can say these:

DR is optimized very well. It runs 60-70 FPS on highest settings with AA and AF. I get about half of that in Arma and there is not much to justify that.

The game is quite polished, I did not find any noticeable bugs during about my 2 hours session.

DR is also more accessible. There is no need to addons, mods etc. Just start and play.

I am having hard time getting used to the graphics in DR. In Arma everything seems to be more clear. DR is just full of tall grass and trees, it is hard to see much. The presentation is very good, just different.

the control system in DR is at first strange, but I quickly got used to it. I dont like that you have to stop to give orders, but when you get used to it, it goes fairly quickly.

The AI seems to be very good and it follows commands well. It also seems to be more independent. At least in Arma1 my AI comrades were in most cases more of a problem than help.

Arma2 has larger scope, more details and I prefer the settings better. DR is much more polished, less frustrating yet still a lot of fun to play. I am yet to try the multiplayer, if it works well, I will be super happy.

For sure, DR is somewhat simplified compared to Arma, but I think for most people this is the right balance of hardcore sim and fun.

I really wish BIS and CM could combine the resources and make the uber OFP-ARMA game. One that is polished, user friendly, bug-free and fun. For now, I will be playing DR tonight, and maybe will buy Arma2 when the price drops to $30 or so.

Right, because DR supports 63 entities at the same time, in ArmA2 there is probably no occasion where you will ever go below that number. :p

This is not the thread, or even forum to discuss OFPDR. Frankly, it serves no purpose to compare it even, and it just degenerates to a primative mud throwing match.

I only drove a small 4by4 in DR, I kept hitting trees and, in my opinion the vehicle did not react to turns enough. So no, steering is not that great. Simply the vehicle should be more sensitive to steering, thats it.

Since the original questions have now been answered and we really don't want to see anymore DR discussion here, until the dedicated DR discussion thread at the off-topic section has been opened, this thread shall be now closed.
