Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I was playing(or trying to) a custom mission with about 20 infantry units and 5 or 6 vehicles and no cities around.

It started very VERY slow but it was still playable.

After a while tough it dropped A LOT,it was really unplayable(probably around 5 FPS).

I tried the lowest settings possible and I couldn't notice any change.

My computer settings:

Intel core 2 duo e6600 2.40 GHz

4 gb ram

nvidia 8800gtx 768mb

My pc isn't great but I don't think it's just because of that since I can play basically any game with the options maxed out(or near it) including new ones.

Can it be because of the big number of units on the mission?

A shame if it is cause it will get kind of boring having to play only "small" missions like in the campaign.

Also, while the campaign was much faster, there were some missions that were very slow too and I had the same problem with the lowest settings not improving the FPS(In this case it actually did improve but not as much as I'd have hoped).

Thanks for the help and sorry about my english.

The low fps at the start is due to your CPU being a bit slow, the drop in fps later is most likely due to a memory leak. When it gets slow, try holding left shift then hit the minus key (-) on the keypad then release both and type "endmission" (without quotes)

Other than that, try changing your video memory settings. On either high or very (try both)

No change with high very high settings and why should I use endmission?

I mean,it'll make me go back to the menu and I won't be able to finish the mission(obviously).

The menu runs way better tough.

I had this problem once in self made editor mission in ARMA 2 demo and the lag was due to a unit been placed on tree and the way some soldier was stuck in a wall. I moved them slightly and the problem went away. Don't know if this happens in retail because i have not experienced any major lag dramas in full retail

Just check all the placements incase but it may not be ur problem

Do u lag in other missions or is this the only particular one?

if it's the only one ide say something is badly placed

Also u might be able to oc ur CPU, that might help if u get it to 3ghz or even higher if u have aftermarket fan. But don't do this unless u know how to overclock

Just out of curiousity, is it 20 infantry in total in the mission, or just 20 infantry in your area?

I'm not familiar with overclocking so that won't work for me(I'm thinking of getting a better processor,I hope it makes the game more enjoyable to me :( )

This is the first mission custom mission I've tried and the only one overall that I had a problem this big(the mission in the city of the campaign and the last one were slow too,but not like this one).

Just out of curiousity, is it 20 infantry in total in the mission, or just 20 infantry in your area?

I think total.

The entire mission is in a small area(or atleast as far as I could play it).

What I found funny is that the more the vehicles got destroyed and the soldiers died, the slowest it got, shouldn't it be the other way around?

Try another mission and see what happens. Just plonk down roughly the same amount of vehicles and ai in a town. If fps goes up then something was wrong with the mission u created before because in town fps should drop more

I think it's the number of units, just tried and "small" missions run great but bigger ones are nearly unplayable :(

I'de be suspect of the cpu in that case

I have 8800GT with e8400

run fine with cpu @ 3ghz and a little better @ 3.6ghz

i'm constantly getting 20-35 fps in editor with 10 tanks, 5 apc's, 4 wheeled vehicles, 100 AI, 10 helicopters and a few machine gun nests and empty vehicles.

Other night i added a few more choppers and tanks and no change to fps either. All this running @ 3ghz too.

This is in city too

But i would try searching more info in these forums about nvidia tweaks etc anyway

Someone with cpu like yours and 8800 graphics series might be able to help or atleast u may see what they are getting

Other than that, try changing your video memory settings. On either high or very (try both)

Video memory should be set to DEFAULT if you have more than 512MB of vRAM (which you do). This will allow Arma2 to automatically detect all of your vRAM.

Also, be sure to defragment your hard drive so the texture files can load as quickly as possible. (I like Defraggler, and it's free).

I already did the defragment thing a few days ago but thanks for the tip about video memory I never knew wich one to use :D
