What's the diference: Dsync & ping(ms)

I don't understand what's the diference between dsync and ping (ms). Many times i had a low ping, but a high dsync. Why and how does it affect my game?

Ping is how good your connection to the server is, I think desync is when the game world lags or bugs out and stops updating. What's interesting is this doesn't seem to affect chat because you can still talk to people.

AIUI, ping is simply the time it takes the server to respond to you. Desync indirectly equates to packetloss and causes the stop-motion shootouts you see on highly populated servers.

Think of it as if you're pinging the server and it's a constant 60, then it spikes to 400, then back to 60, during that spike you lost synchronization with the server.

On thing to try to help avoid this if using a Wireless network. If you are using XP make sure that you've installed the software that comes with your Wireless card and allow that software to control it, not windows. If you're using Vista then there's nothing you can do about it except work on a wired network connection.

To explain further... Windows Zero Configuration Utility (the util used for wireless networking) attempts to update network information and search for new networks every 30-60 seconds (even if you tell it not to). When this happens your ping to your wireless access point or router jumps from <1ms to a much higher amount (usually around 1600-3000). Unfortunately there's no way to disable it and Microsoft believe it serves more good than bad so they won't allow you to change it.

That said, there are some 3rd party utilities that work in some cases, but each util only works for several wireless cards, and none are definite to work. The one I can remember the name of is VistaNoLag, there's another but I've forgotten the name of it.

I believe if "your" connection starts crapping out, the server fights to keep you in, which may cause everyone else to also get Dsync during those moment/s.

i found desynch equates to being able to wonder around the world shooting people who dont move or are running on the spot, and who dont die despite blood spurting out of their face, only to eventually find yourself dead or in some seemingly random part of the map.

Dysnc, in my experience has always been two things...

A) When first joining a game, you can show as having high desync until your connection things settle into a place. IIRC, this is a known problem with joining MP games in Arma2 at the moment and not only affects the joining player but also affects all others (depending on how full the game is)

and

B) When the server is simply overworked, normally with AI. If it can't keep up with the processing, everything grinds to a massive, horrible desync'd halt. Server restarts normally fix this...for a while, until it happens again.
