AI will not engage enemy

I have created a simple form of Air Support by having an empty plane (or helo, ive tried it both ways) on the runway with a pilot next to it (helo has pilot and gunner). I have waypoints set up as follows:

All Waypoints linked to pilot

0 - Move next to plane

1 - Get in (Activated by radio)

2 - Move to some loc on map

3 - Destroy (linked to enemy rifleman)

The pilot(s) don't engage the enemy at all. Once the final waypoint is reached, they seem to go off on a random course, circling around the general area. Am I doing something wrong?

Try using "Seek and Destroy" rather than "Destroy"? I usually use Destroy only for specific objectives, like a tank or something.

Destroy will order the unit to engage whatever object you attach the WP to, and only that object. If it's a rifleman it might be pretty difficult (if not impossible) for any plane to engage it.

I have used seek and destroy as well with the same results. Also, I've use the cobra helo as well as fixed wing aircraft. All do the same thing. If I have a helo grouped to the player and order an attack, it works just fine.

Try a guard waypoint in the general area if you dont use any 'Guarded by' triggers already.

You could also try making it just a regular move waypoint and using the reveal command to reveal targets to the helicopter/plane.

That could be my problem right there. If the AI are not part of my group, they don't detect the enemy automatically? I have to reveal it to them?

Also, I found it odd that the enemy units didn't fire on the helicopter either.

Generally speaking I think only AA soldiers fire on helicopters and maybe machine gunners. Also gun emplacements and vehicles tend to. If you use the guard waypoint as someone said before you shouldn't have to reveal them though.

I tried using guard and had the same results. I experimented by adding an enemy tank to the mix, and for some reason it works. The Cobra takes out the tank, then engages the men like I wanted him to. If I get rid of the tank again, it goes back to not working. My mind is boggled.

By the way, the AV8B engages men just fine this way as well. Bombs the snot out of them, lol.

Try the reveal command. (Just reveal some units which you know are still alive, or all of them to be sure)

I think that when the chopper is absolutely sure about the infantry he will engage them properly.

(My UH-1 just attacked enemy infantry by itself using a guard waypoint though)
