Thoughts on the Flight Model

Recommended Posts

It is far better than the one in ArmA, that is for sure. Only a few problems remain (and some of these are aircraft specific, there is only one broad one).

The yaw authority is still far too low across the board, especially at the speeds you fly at in ArmA 2 (the 500km/h range). 500km/h is just above the speed at which you can deploy landing gear and flaps in a fighter jet, yet in ArmA 2, at 500km/h the rudder responds as if you were flying at a supersonic speed.

It is severely dampened, and in the small map size of ArmA 2, it makes it very hard to maneuver effectively.

Helicopters have been improved greatly from ArmA 1 in all aspects of flight, but they still require a little more yaw authority across a lower speed range (50-130km/h).

Apart from that, most aircraft seem fine. I can only suggest a few other small things that would improve a few specific airplanes.

~ V-22 yaw authority while hovering needs to be increased - at the current rate of yaw, it is very difficult to maneuver it in a manner that combat situations would require. See this video to get an idea of what the yaw rate of the Osprey should look like...

~ Updated VTOL needs to be implemented for the AV-8B Harrier - it may not be able to do a vertical take off at full load, but after releasing its load and flying back to base, it sure can do a vertical landing.

This is very difficult in ArmA 2, because giving the Harrier more thrust while in auto-hover seems to point the thrust nozzles back, giving it more forward speed rather than making it ascend.

~ C-130 turning circle needs to be fixed. This isn't related to the flight model really, but it can't even turn onto a taxiway. Enough said.

~ Almost forgot about this one - the 'auto-rudder' that plagues the F-35 (it causes the plane to yaw left and right in smooth and level flight) needs to be removed.

arma2disapointed, good you read the previous posts (like the first and only in this thread) before you reply.. ..

This may be irrelivent slightly to the actual physics of the game, but I would really like for there to be suspension effects on all aircraft :D. Landings look so bad in ArmA 2 lol.

As for physics, they really aren't bad considering ArmA 2 isnt a flight simulation of any kind. It certainly beats BF2 :)

I fully agree with your post An-225. Those changes would really add a lot to the flight dynamics.
