can addons be used in downloaded versions?

Hey guys. I just cannot find this game on US shelves, not even in Best Buy where they are supposed to have it and GameStop hasnt even head of it. So I think I am going to downloaded online. However I am concerned that Direct2Drive or Steam, or other versions that i could download off the internet would not allow me to install community addons. Addons are one of my favorite parts of this game. Anyone have any experience with this?

Yes, I have Steam version and the beta patches/mods will/do work.
