cartier90 0 Posted July 13, 2009 This has been recently mentioned in another post. I thought it deserved a thread of its own though. I am disapointed that friendly AI only begin to engage targets at 600 m or closer. At this distance snipers and machine gunners cannot hit for shit - is this an issue that has been raised with BIS ? Ben 0 Posted July 13, 2009 Do you realize how small a target is at 600m and for an unscoped weapon such as a M240b or M249 it is more of a spray and keep their headsdown. Are there really areas in Chernaraus were you can engage at that distance, ground cover and forests seem to house to much cover to ever engage at those distances. frederf 0 Posted July 13, 2009 Short engagement ranges are an annoyance. I wish my riflemen would open up at 600m+, never mind about ATGM gunners and .50cal gunners. The fact that they tend to have less than perfect accuracy at long range is not a problem. Machine gunners aiming at a squad at 600m are likely going for area fire and a suppression effect, not headshots.
cartier90 0 Posted July 13, 2009 Well Im talking about snipers as well, they are quite poor shots over 500m, if they take the shot at all...
Jimmy the Saint 10 Posted July 13, 2009 Snipers are not supposed to take out a whole group of enemy soldiers from a distance. They are mainly there to observe the area and keep the place safe or to inform his squad of the situation and or movements. I mean which sniper would give away their great spot just for shooting around? He might be dead in no time! The enemy is not dumb, or do you think those enemy soldiers are just out there picking flowers without any situational awareness?
My Fing ID 0 Posted July 13, 2009 The maximum effective range of an M16 for a point target is 500m, 800 for area. This doesn't mean accurate either. 240b is like 800 point or something like that? I can't remember but what I can remember is taking down 800m targets with 1 round. Though weapons are very accurate, its all a moot point though because you should be letting the enemy come in close to increase your accuracy. If you're doing it right they'll be out in the open, surprised, suppressed, and have taken some good loss in the first few seconds. You take control with surprise and you keep it with suppression. At 600m you have no control. You can't suppress as well and your rifles can't hit. Dunno if that's even 203 range anymore because I think they're sighted to 300m. Tldr engaging a squad at extreme range is bad.
frederf 0 Posted July 13, 2009 I don't think the game takes into account optics when the AI is aiming. If they made M40s hit first shots at 1000m then AK-101s would be doing nearly that well too.
cartier90 0 Posted July 13, 2009 Fair one My Fing, - if from your exp IRL that is the way its done, good enough for me :) - makes sense when you think about it . It would be nice though , If I order a sniper to fire from 700/800 , then thats what he does.
