Reusing existing models

Hi, I'm new to arma 2 modding, I would like to know if it's possible to modify existing models. I've tried to open a p3d file extracted from a pbo but O2 says that it's in binary format and it can't be opened

Here are the Arma 1 models released by B.I, they open fine and this is where I am starting from. Hope that helps.
