The authors capable of creating high-quality maps/missions usually document these requirements well and provide links to where the add-ons can be found. If you are talking about problems with official maps, you may have a corrupt installation. The installation can get damaged during a bad patch, or due to hardware/software problems like the infamous VIA 686B southbridge data-corruption bug.
