Video Memory setting?

Recommended Posts

Have tried all selections and it doesn't seem to make a difference to FPS - though what I haven't fully explored is the video memory setting in combo with all the permutations of the other graphics settings.

Anyone know what it does? I've not seen this config option in any other game.

I'm running a 4870X2 (1GB RAM).

Thanks guys.

I'm running -winxp, btw, so both cores are active. Usually at about 70% load, each.

From what I can tell I believe the video memory is in relation to the texture memory. You're basically telling the system that you have a lot of video memory so it can push larger textures through it faster.

If you tried to tell the system you had very high vid memory when you didn't then put textures on very high you'd get lag spikes which is your card pausing to load the next texture as it can't store it and process it fast enough.

Thanks Bulldogs, that's what I assumed too.

I did, however, read in another thread here someone saying that the 'default' Vid Mem setting tells the game to use all available VRAM. So, then, if so - why would there be options to force higher or lower than onboard VRAM? It doesn't make sense...

I'm not exactly definite on it myself but I'm guessing it's a case of storage memory as oppose to cache or processing memory. If you look in the cfg file you'll see the vram is set to a rediculous amount (higher than any graphics card has) but I believe the ingame setting is to change the texture processing memory and not the ingame memory (think of the in game vide memory setting as 2d and the cfg file vram setting as 3d/physics)

At least that's my guess.
